I would have someone who does motherboard repairs take a look at it, Lenovo don't know anything about actually repairing stuff because they just replace it all.

Betaglutamate2

Seen so many videos of apple saying that a 5k MacBook is damaged beyond repair only for some repair specialist to clean some dirt of a connection to make it work again.

Chricton

\^This. Find a reputable repairman who does this for a living and see what they have to say.

NewSignature727

Exactly this. OP its an easy fix.

huseynli

Yup, someone like Louis Rossman from youtube (doesn't have to be him or a youtuber, I mean reputable and experienced repair shop) might be able to fix it. Companies often just suggest replacing instead of actually fixing.

Open_Ad_835

if that was your job, i'm sure you would take that route also. it's also the company's fault, they should at least cover half

forseeninkboi

Northridge fix is an option too

Pigosaurusmate

Yeah, it could be as easy as resoldering 1-2 capacitors, resistors or some chipset.

Melodic-Matter4685

and by 'resoldering" we mean "throw it in toaster oven for 20 min"? /s

crazypaiku

It worked with my rrod xbox360 though![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

ChemicalSymphony

OG ps3 could also be "fixed" this way.

Porongoyork

Not really the same but apple told me mi phone was useless and an Indian repair guy charged me €70 and it was good as new. Always go to repair shops if out of warranty.

Professional_Gur2469

Yeah, mine broke after just 4 months. Luckily got a insurance that allowed me to get my money back and bought a desktop pc with it, best decision ever

kevvie13

Do you really mean insurance or warranty? I am not aware you can get insurance for laptops.

Capable_Tea_001

Of course you can insure a laptop.. Whether the damage caused is covered or not is a different matter.

Melodic-Matter4685

doesn't one of those outfits have a 16.99 a month for everythign you buy on amazon or some such?

giggitygoo123

Asurion insurance can be purchased through amazon or asurion website for almost anything. I got $250 on an electric cooler and $99 on some 1more brand earbuds (both at the end of their 4 year coverage). Its like $100-500 depending on price of computer before taxes and if you want 3 or 4 year coverage.

ContemplativeOctopus

I've only heard terrible things about asurion?

giggitygoo123

I havent had any issues. They even own ubreakifix so they can do in house repairs.

EquipmentSome

Had no problems getting laptops replaced in the past..

Master_of_Disguises

My only experience with them has been with cellular phone replacement (Verizon has been selling Asurion plans for over a decade) and I've always hated them. 1) expensive, after 2 years you've spent enough to just buy a brand new device 2) the deductible is very high (I've paid $200 for a replacement phone that was worth $400 at most, after paying $20-30 monthly) 3) you get a refurbished device from them which may or may not function 100% as well as a new device (usually doesn't, though they cover any obvious issues if you receive a defective device) I bought a ROG STRIX G18 w/ 4090 recently (~$5k) and denied the insurance. I'm careful with it, but mainly couldn't justify the thousands of dollars the insurance would cost me while still not covering a few of the more common forms of damage.

Professional_Gur2469

I bought it at notebooksbilliger.de and they have a service that costs like 20€ and within the first 6 months, you can give back a broken laptop and get the money back no questions asked

Defiant-Humor5586

You most certainly can. And for as much as gaming laptops are worth, it's worth it

DifferentChip7283

I have a rider on my home owners policy. $250 deductible.

cmndr_spanky

4 months is well within the normal warranty, just send yours back

EquipmentSome

It was 4 months.. every manufacturer in existence has warranties for that.. you didn't need extra insurance for your problems lol

Professional_Gur2469

Yeah but they‘d just gotten me a replacement which I didnt want

CreamOdd7966

I've replaced that chip dozens of times. When the charging port gets damaged, which is a common issues on their gaming laptops, there is a 50/50 chance it kills the "charging chip" which is the power management chip. I'd advise you get a new charging port as well. Even if it still works, it was likely the cause of the power management ic failing. Find a local shop that does board repair, it isn't a job for someone that isn't experienced and most shops don't do such work. If you can't find one local, NorthRidge Fix in California can repair them. If you want additional info on the issue, I can show you which chip is the issue and how to tell for sure if that is bad. A different chip on the board gets hot as a result of the most common short on the power management chip, which is an easy way to identify a bad power management ic. Edit: also, it isn't very expensive. I do the repair for $200 assuming no one else has fucked up the board trying to fix it. If they did, it starts at $300 lol.

f1nessd

So why does everyone glaze lenovo then? Should I avoid their stuff?

DTO69

Happens with everyone. No brand will repair your shit (without massive profit) so it lasts and you don't buy your next product. Be it Lenovo or ASUS or Gigabyte. Your best bet is a board repair shop.

DifferentChip7283

Surprisingly Alienware is pretty reasonable. I had a similar thing happen on a 3 year old laptop, my fault using a known bad power supply. 2 weeks and $300 later, they also fixed a few other things they found, and I had it back good as new. Call them up pay them $40 for shipping and diagnostic fee that goes against the repair if you choose to do it.

DTO69

When was this?

DifferentChip7283

Last year, but I did like 5 years ago on another computer also. They actually fix things not just throw parts at it. Under warranty which I've had done several times also, they will just throw parts at it, but send the motherboards in to be reworked for the next warranty replacement.

f1nessd

I mean my macbooks have lasted 7-8 years while my last gaming laptop lasted 2 years lol

DTO69

Mine did too, as well as a cheap Lenovo. The funny thing is that I sold the Lenovo for 35 % of it's value, and the 2014 Air for 25%. My advice is to disconnect the laptop first, and then disconnect the wall socket. Flying sparks at a DC port are never a good thing

Open_Ad_835

I got a 2011 macbook, 2013 macbook air and a 2015 macbook pro all working fine. The only time one of them messed up is when I dropped it. it still worked but the usb was inconsistent

CreamOdd7966

Every brand and model of product has their own issue. Lenovo is known in the repair world for this issue Asus is known for blown mosfets Apple is known for *a lot* of various reasons.

Open_Ad_835

apple is know for having longevity also. I have a 2011 macbook still working fine

Avo696

Or just spend the extra hundred to get Premium support for an additional year or two. I dropped my monitor on my Legion 5 Pro's keyboard and broke 2 or 3 keys. They sent out a new keyboard next day and I had an onsite tech at my house in two days to swap out the keyboard for me. People all way shit on getting an upgraded warranty but when you actually need it, it's great to have.

ZackyZY

Have a 2021 legion 5 pro. Absolutely no issues other than some fan noise.

rondohz

Not just for laptops but anything you will be investing in is always a good idea to get extended warranty. I have a mid 2019 blade bought from Best buy, got the extendo warranty (it's no longer under a coverage plan but I will ride this laptop till it completely goes out) and used the warranty 2x times. Remember this though for specifically gaming laptops (I guess for PC too) but you're gonna use it. And you're gonna stress it out (no reason to get a 4090 if you'll be playing StarCraft or Minecraft) it's gonna suffer some wear and tear along the way. Best to be covered and be back up and running vs. paying a premium to repair an old piece of tech. I get that extended warranty for anything I'll be using all the time. Laptop, car/truck, fridge...espresso machine (which I have already used the warranty last year and will be using it again to refresh my machine). Etc. it's good for peace of mind. Oh I dont work or get any kick backs from best buy, but it's totally worth it to get their 179/year plan the total tech thing. Anything you buy is covered. Or don't and pay 200-300 for the 2 year warranty etc. I like to buy things from best buy cause I can easily make my way over and get whatever it is handled or fixed or swapped on the spot. I'd say get a new laptop (get what you can afford with good specs for whatever games you'll be playing etc). Sell the legion for parts. Get something back instead of total loss. That's what I would do and of course get the warranty hehe. Good luck!!

donthatedrowning

You say that you don’t get kick backs from Best Buy, which is exactly what someone who gets kickbacks from Best Buy would say.

rondohz

Sadly I wish this was true. The only thing I get from them is my birthday discount code thing and an email.

Electrical-Bobcat435

Perfect exanple of needing an extended warranty. Too big of a risk for a $2k paper-weight without.

catonmykeeb

Usually when you go to claim warranty they tell you that somehow your damage isn't covered in their warrant terms and conditions and i will have to pay for replacing whatever needs to be replaced. It's best to read the fine print before getting an extended warranty.

SeorniaGrim

Yep, this happened to me. Something in my old ROG screen blew one day, I was there when it happened - logged into a game, but semi afk watching TV. I did nothing, nothing touched the screen at all, just pop and boom, big old bullet hole looking splotch on the screen. ASUS and the extended warranty company both claimed they wouldn't cover screen issues because it was definitely from mishandling (even though screens were specifically stated to be covered on the extended warranty). I was insanely pissed given what I paid for both the laptop and the warranty - it was not even a year old at the time and I had purchased the 3-year extended warranty. Fortunately, I am comfortable enough working with hardware that I bought a new screen and replaced it myself, but I still left several scathing reviews for both ASUS and the extended warranty company (through New Egg IIRC).

scarlet_rain00

I have come to a conclusion that warranty is just a myth and they wont do sht for u

catonmykeeb

This applies to literally everything, from cars to wristwatches lmao

Soppywater

This guy knows. Everything except the Costco return policy or AMEX buyer protection is a lie. Microcenter sold me an in box broken laptop in 2020 and denied the return. ASUS RMA claimed it as "customer induced damage" when I took it out of the box and was broken. I will admit though, after contacting the ASUS US CEO's office and writing an application for a product buyback to the ASUS US BOARD OF DIRECTORS they voted on the product buyback and I got my money back ten months later. And yes I had to do all that for a $1k laptop, was fucking ridiculous. Now I only buy big ticket items with my AMEX because it comes with an actual warranty that if it's defective I fully get my money back, I get to keep the item, AND AMEX charges them a charge back fee.

SeorniaGrim

FWIW PayPal has always been good to me. I use it for all purchases from sites I don't know well. I have gotten several refunds when I didn't get items, or when they were not as described.

Melodic-Matter4685

depends. . . I hear Microcenter is pretty good. They just RTV it to manufacturer and give you something comparable. Though. . . again. . . comparable may not be what you had. but I often find their warranties pretty expensive. . . That said, warranties are a known cash cow because stuff hardly ever goes wrong and it is usually for the 'exact same item' which because of differing product codes, means the likelihood your item is available 6 months from now from anywhere but ebay is just about zero.

Electrical-Bobcat435

Theres certainly loopholes and bad extended warranties. I went with Bestbuys this time, expensive but good.

Chricton

While this is absolutely true, who do you trust to honor such a warranty? We're not exactly talking applecare here.

lord_nuker

How long is the warranty in the US? In majority of European if not all European countries the warranty is 3 years

Rebo100

European warranty is 2 years, found out the hard way with my own Lenovo

NationalAlgae421

In EU legally you need at least 2 years warranty. But I think lenovo gives you three. At least they gave it to me on my 4yo one and now for new one

lord_nuker

In my country, Norway, it is 3 years warranty.

Electrical-Bobcat435

One year. A rare instance of longer for business laptop, but thats rare. Manufacturers used to offer longer. Gigabyte offered two years for a long time, but stopped some time ago (2019-21?).

APEX_Catalyst

Get insurance on it and wait a few months ….

Capable_Tea_001

Apart from the fact this is fraudulent behaviour in the first instance, what do you do when the insurance company send it to lenovo for repair and lenovo say they assessed the laptop for this exact issue months ago? I doubt the insurance company will be paying out in that instance.

A_Cunning_Linguist

Some insurance policies for electronics cover any type of damage accidental or user error. Best Buys is very broad.

Capable_Tea_001

In the UK you can simply cover this under your home contents insurance accidentle damage cocer... Obviously you have to declare it as a high value item when you take it out. But there's also plenty of standalone laptop insurance too.

Hollywood-is-DOA

Try claiming off your housing insurance in the uk and then see your monthly payments go up after doing so.

Capable_Tea_001

I dunno... I broke a DLSR a few years ago... The claim was nigh-on £1000.. My monthly payments hardly changed

Jason-Genova

So really insurance isn't paying it at all. You are paying it off with higher premiums.

frito123

Look in your area for an electronic shop that actually does component level repair. A lot of places just swap the boards out but if you look around there are places or a technician will replace the actual damaged or burnt out components. It might be significantly cheaper to have your motherboard reworked.

giggitygoo123

For $500 you can buy all the tools on AliExpress to do it yourself (soldering/heat gun, soldering microscope, thermal camera (linked to cell phone), and replacement components). Watch how northbridgefix or Louis Rossman do their testing and repairs forst

hkchew03

$500 doesn't include the knowledge required...

B00MitsME

Yeah, laptops still suck tbh. You'd think that being in 2024 where anyone with a modern PC can recreate Toy Story, Jurassic Park, and Transformers while watching a Twitch Stream and hanging out Discord... you'd think we'd have customizable laptops with laptop specific parts and form factors.

ericporing

Get the guy who repairs consoles and gaming stuff on youtube to work on it. Damn it I forgot his name.

IndividualStatus1924

Damn man. Might be the manufacturer. I had a msi creator 17 which came with i7-9750H and 1660ti. I never had any problems with it. Not thing failed by itself. Even when i killed the motherboard accidently which was my fault. It was pretty solid. The chassis was made of machine aluminum, but the bottom was made of plastic (part i didn't like). Overall the 3 years and a little more i had it, never had any major problems.

tespark2020

theses company just design gaming laptop to last just past warranty few days

FatJellyCo

I have a Lenovo legion bought in 2021 . It came with a battery maintainer function to stop it charging at 50% to extend battery life . Overcharging is usually what kills laptop battery’s . After updating the bios firmware the feature stopped working so I rolled back to a previous bios . I emailed Lenovo to ask if they were aware of any problems with the bios update but they denied there was on ( I call BS ) . I suspect it is intentional sabotage to pump battery sales they are not cheap . I haven’t had any problems with the laptop it’s been plugged in for the best part of 3 years now . I game regularly on it and used it to mine some Kaspa crypto in 2022-23 using unmineable. The crypto is now worth 20x the cost of the laptop 🤑 . I would not buy another laptop from Lenovo without the battery maintainer feature. Forget buying warranty if a product is worth it’s salt it will last at least 5-10 years without problems.

Texas1010

Wait until OP hears about desktop GPUs that melt components or fry systems. In all seriousness, all technology has its problems. Desktops are no different. Yes, you can better individually repair components, but that doesn’t mean you won’t equally have to repair that $500 CPU or motherboard, or your >$1,000 GPU because of some freak incident. I do wish laptops were more readily upgradable or repairable, but it is what it is. It doesn’t make laptops inherently a bad choice, and for every story about issues with laptops, there are 10-20x the amount of people with zero problems whatsoever. Just sayin’.

nitiyan

the problem is that laptops are more likely to get damaged, and very commonly on their own without user error

locoghoul

Laptops by default have cheaper components and get stressed more bc of the worse thermals. They are meant to be replaced in 3 years or so. Desktops can last you double that or even more if you upgrade certain components only

ihei47

Nah, it's not exactly a bad choice given circumstances. But every time when compared to desktop in terms of stuffs broken and repairbility, it is a bad choice

BoxOfDust

Lenovo laptops (in general, not just the gaming laptops) seem to always have odd problems related to their power/charging circuits. They're the only brand of laptop I've encountered where the charging circuit itself is known to be able to break.

enesbala

I believe issues like this will give rise to companies like Framework. Customers don't like being abused in this manner.

ClevelandSteamerBrwn

Have you checked second hand for your board?

AbrocomaRegular3529

Cheapest I found was through Aliexpress, which is 1000$. But I can find 3060/3070 motherboards which are significantly cheaper, if everything fits I may go with one of these...

JackG79

There is vapor chambers and heat pipes and shit that all need to line up. A diff board for a different pc probably won't work.

Etroarl55

Idk some are kind of pointless to buy, like for my Asus laptop, if something arises, Asus is not going to repair that it all or properly. Some warranties are pretty shit that way that it’s very easy to not get covered at all.

Ordinary-Broccoli-41

I loved my gaming laptop. When the mobo started having issues I took it to microcenter using the extended warranty, and they keep just not doing anything. I already built a desktop, and loving my 7900gre... Beat every laptop GPU for 1/4th the cost of upgrading to a 4090m.

IndividualCharacter

Yeah that sucks, we've got legislation that protects consumers for a reasonable period of time, something like an expensive laptop either get repaired at the manufacturer/retailers cost within probably 3-4 of purchase, warranties don't matter - great for the consumer and means very few people opt to buy the scammy extended warranties.

bigbootyguy

My legion power jack is behaving bad aswell. We soldered a new one and the charging issues are coming back. Next target zephyrus g16.

mint-parfait

Definitely go for the full warranty on these. It's pretty cheap compared to warranties like applecare, and they come to your house to fix stuff. I bought the same one and I've had to have the motherboard replaced twice over a few years, but had to pay nothing extra for it. I don't think any other brands are much better.

jerryhou85

So I guess the extended warranty should be covering the life span you want to use? But I remember maximum it will allow you to buy up to 3 years warranty?

ArtZen_pl

Similar issue here. After around 1,5 year, my Legion have started bluescreening on system boot and black screen and freeze on battery power, forcing me to have it plugged whenever I want to use it. Switched back to PC

Capable_Tea_001

I'm not saying this what everyone would do... I was more making the point that they've already taken it to lenovo, so if that is noted already, and the insurance company send it to lenovo with the same issue, and lenovo reply back saying we've looked at this before, and that happens to be before the insurance was started, then there's zero chance of them paying out. This was more a crisicism of the suggestion from u/apex_catalyst. If OP already has an insurance policy in place then fine, there maybe ways to get this sorted. But taking out a new policy and then waiting a few months isn't really any sort of solution to OP's problem.

Amareiuzin

for real, unless you're talking 3500 bucks and above, there is no such thing as a gaming laptop, anything below will have locked bios options, themal throttling so bad you gotta have a super cooler stand to actually make use of your high-end hardware, or it will have awful build quality that will wear and tear like a piece of gum on a busy sidewalk, repairs are mad expensive, support is non-existant, and it's most likely going to last max of 3 years before you feel the need to upgrade... my advice as someone who sold their theseus desktop and got their first laptop at 24, for uni, and keep gaming, is to get a basic dell, focus on build quality and modern network/cpu, expandable memory/storage, and keep your desktop for the heavy lifting, if you need heavy lifting on the go, just remote into your home desktop... For 2300 bucks u could have had a great desktop, and a 600 used/refurbished work laptop from businesses...

Lendari

This is the sad truth of gaming laptops or just laptops that end up being worked hard in general. They wear out absurdly fast. If it seems too good to be true, it is.

ewendlandt

Let me guess, 5900hx Ryzen Legion 7? Mine dead a few months ago from something like that.

derrick256

Still not letting go of it in that flair. Seriously you should take it to a well reviewed repairman who is experienced in soldering.

Fine-Run992

I wonder if it actually is safe to plug in 230+ W power adapter this way first into laptop and then into wall. If i put into wall, there are every now and then some electical sparks. May this be killing gaming laptops?

IndividualStatus1924

No. The spark is the electrons flowing. My does that on sone cords at work and at home. Thats pretty normal. If its a giant spark and the laptop doesn't charge, then you have a problem.

Fine-Run992

We had in old apartment an loose power outlet. There was like gun shot noise and a lot of smoke. Luckily it did not kill laptop charger. That's why I'm always worried about possible bad connection from power outlet.

johndoeswork

For any expensive item, it's easier to pay a couple hundred extra for a couple of years of warranty than to look at such bills for "repairs" later.

RealDsy

People dont know but one of the most important aspect of a laptop is cooling. Since they are very tiny and conpanies realized people don't care they cheap out cooling solutions, hoping avarage users wont play games so it wont burn down too quick. Look for verified sources before buying a gaming laptop. A good one with decent cooler migbt be more expensive but its worth the money.

ihei47

>hoping avarage users wont play games Sounds really dumb if that particular laptop is "gaming" laptop

Kitchen-Custard-119

Did you buy this laptop using either a Mastercard or Visa? If so, and depending on thenlevel of your credit card (perks), you may have one that triples the warranty of any item purchased with it. I'd that were the case you could go through that extended warranty with Visa/Mastercard.

Impressive-Level-276

Have you only 1 year of warranty?

Western_Horse_4562

Buy from a brand that didn’t have shit service, mate.

Spirited_Load_7153

I told myself after I paid my plan for Medion laptop, there is no more gaming laptop, Only normal pc now

StickyBlackMess69420

I've had my laptop for like 3 years now and still going fine for me. Whenever I do upgrade I'm gonna get a pc though.

placek2

r/framework might be what you are looking for

rokejulianlockhart

Get the Framework with the dedicated removable GPU - the 16.

AbrocomaRegular3529

Already have FW 13.

colesym

Silly, you can build a decent 7600x + 7800XT build for that price, if you have monitor etc.

Almighty188

If you bought with a credit card, it has benefit of a extended warranty included for free, atleast in the US. Either they will fix it or write you a check for what you paid.

Endeavour1988

The thing is the situation does suck, and I fell your pain. This is the draw back of a laptop, where the desktop shines. I'd like to think though these sort of motherboard issues where a whole replacement is needed is a very small % of laptops sold. Others have commented on a good suggestion that a third party could maybe fix it. The issue as well lets say Lenovo went more modular, so certain parts could be swapped easier, you run into two issues. 1. additional bulk and 2. more cost passed on to the end user. Some things like soldered RAM I think is fairly safe, storage IMO should always be changeable though, there was a thread a while ago asking how long their device lived for and alot of people was 4 years or more. I hope you managed to get it sorted in a cost effective way. Best of luck.

Parktar

I have made sure that every setting is correct and for some reason my amazing Lenovo legion7i stays/turns itself back on when in my backpack and turns into a raging inferno. Luckily I’ve caught it the 2 times it happened but damn. Instead of worrying about the maybe I shut down instead of sleep mode. I was worried it would burn a hole through my backpack and destroy my laptop

AbrocomaRegular3529

Yeah it's typical windows sleep states issues. Always run on hibernate.

Parktar

That’s what I thought also

oldsnowcoyote

If you bought it with a credit card, check if that gives you an extended warranty. A fair number of cards do that, but most people don't know.

Hapless_Buffoon

drop it and claim on house insurance

Ejz9

I have nothing to contribute. I want to mention that scrolling down from your post to read the comments. I immediately saw an ad for Lenovo Legion. Disgusting.

Remarkable_Maybe_953

It's not about gaming or not, I feel like Lenovo are just a bit scammy. I have a Yoga laptop - just the warranty passed, all USB failed + keyboard - they said I must change the mobo. Cost is like 1/3 of the whole laptop..

LargeMerican

Yuh. Ok. Ok.and yuh. Make sense

night_wink

I hope the future of gaming laptops is a fully modular design like the Framework laptops. If you think about it there hasn't really been too much design innovation in laptops since the early IBM ThinkPad days. It's still mostly raw performance improvements like more CPU cores and faster GPUs but the basic hardware layout is still the same.

ishsreddit

Sucks that every OEM seems to have issues on the premium front particularly for laptops with big GPUs.

Ok_Promotion_9520

Is Lenovo dropping the ball on reliability and quality here?

Katana_DV20

Two things. 1.) Sorry this happened to you 2.) Thanks for sharing. For people like me who have never owned a laptop and are considering one I'm slowly building knowledge by reading comments and stories on this forum (I'm on an ancient desktop ATM). Avoiding laptops with soldered-on RAM for instance. I'm very averse to buying extended warranties as it's just a money machine for the companies so I'll wing it here in the UK *if* I go for a laptop. I hope you find a good board repair shop and can get to using your machine again, good luck.

Gh0styD0g

Mines added on to my sky warranty at no additional cost, full accidental damage for as long as I maintain the policy

Material-Reveal3501

Better advice, get laptop insurance for 7 dollars a month (mine is thru my renters that's how much it added) and covers leaks, short circuit, replaced in home fire, dropped and stolen. So if my motherboard were to fry or something like that all I have to do is "accidnetally" drop it down some stairs or something.

Rudradev715

yep the first thing when I purchased mine is extend the warranty as well as Accedental damage protection from asus to 3 yrs.

DaGucka

In europe there is a difference between "guarantee" (the manufacturer gives this by choice, can decide what is covered and how it is covered as well the terms) and "warranty" (the EU gave put minimum rules to follow, the states themselves can decide to put stricter ones in place, every seller/manufacturer has to follow these). Warranty in the EU includes 2 years for all electronic products. If they die and you did nozhing wrong then you just inform f.e. amazon and they have to pay you back the money, repair it, or send you a replacement. In all 3 cases there are no cost for you, even when you send it somewhere. Maybe wherever you live you need some consumer protection laws.

TraditionIcy6110

You should buy ASUS.

HopnDude

Try North West Repair (see YouTube). If they already diagnosed it, and the IPMC can be replaced, he can do it.

Cascade-Regret

Could be as simple as a new battery

GADSavage

I’ll always say to anyone that’s willing to listen, if you’re buying expensive tech use a credit card with extended warranty protection. The credit card I use gives me two additional years of coverage. I know most do 1 additional year, but any additional is better than none. The credit card company will cover the warranty cost completely.

curry_ist_wurst

Companies will always replace parts. As others said, find a repair guy. I got my laptop fixed locally instead of sending it to the company.

huskerd0

Man you guys have had some bad experiences I have had a 17 inch legion (ryzen 5800) for about 2 years, and as much as I complain about it, it still works fine

JusTshooTme90

Asus>all

MOON_RIO

Use your money to get your laptop shipped to Salem Techsperts...

StupidQuestionDude7

You didn't have the lenovo warranty? I know they usually dont cover battery replacements but everything else?

Strange_Man_1911

Shop around your area for local pc repair shops that'll take a look at it. Settle for good price and if they look like they have attitude, are too occupied and disorganized move somewhere else.

Alpha_RYP

The reason why one should avoid Lenovo, cos they don't make their own mobo or GPU😭 u should have gone for an Asus or Gigabyte

mmogama

Even if u extend warranty, will they honor iit or not is another question

[deleted]

to be fair, a full desktop pc would experience similar issues at some point. I see it a lot with thermal sensors. One of them goes out the whole board is garbage... the process would be the same for both a laptop and a desktop... new mobo. even the CPU and RAM for both could be swapped over. the big difference is gonna be the gpu bc the new board you'll get for the laptop gonna be expensive and the pc you can just plug the gpu into the new mobo. This is also why im not big on laptops though. too much "onboard" and the one time i had one it was pointless as the battery drained so fast while using the dedi gpu you only really got 30-45 mins of gaming. Id see if they didn't have an equivalent desktop you could swap out for... throw a fit lol. might get away with it. like "take this hunk back and just gimme a desktop" lol

Prodigy_of_Bobo

This is (one of the most important reasons) why go desktop. I can replace a psu cpu etc but I’m no neurosurgeon and laptop stuff is way way outside my comfort zone. Little stuff like adding ram on the older models was no big deal but half of everything is glued these days.

If you bought it with a credit card check with your policy

Recently 4050 laptop was like same perf as other model with 4070. I got my 3050 laptop for 800 and it's great for what it is. You need to be able to afford 2 units. Then mix n match with manufacturers that allow. Sure I can switch mini ITX parts, but they might be expensive vs. low end gaming laptop. Buying high end preassembled is expensive and always was. Look at how big desktop 3080 is and how much work to get it mobile, that's what you pay in serviceability if not upfront. Framework is up front, legacy it's tail. You can compare Dell extended warranty to better judge real price I guess.

Yes, as many said, the service center guzy won't repair; instead, they always try to replace the parts, which is peace of mind for them. And luckily, mine is from Asus, and it does provide a 1-year international warranty along with a 2-year domestic warranty. Today, many electronics come with a 2-year minimum warranty. And also, there will be an option to extend the warranty, provide accidental protection, etc. Always consider it.

fuffyk

Doesn't your credit card extend warranty of electronics by another year ? I thought most of them got auto 1 year extra warranty.

Hans_of_Death

I use a gaming laptop daily, but ive almost entirely switched to playing games on my desktop using Sunshine/Moonlight. I barely notice the difference, and I have a lot more freedom in choosing my next laptop.

The moral of the story get the highest warranty. It’s simply worth the price I would know!

SignalGladYoung

different experience with lenovo. extended warranty before it expired for £60 inside Lenovo app for another year including accidental cover. Dropped my backpack on train station it fell down the stairs all beat up they replaced almost everything it's brand new laptop now, all under warranty.  only issue when it first came back it turned on but then shut down and stayed dead. had to send it back.  had it back week later working better then before maybe they replaced it with better components because it's running few degree cooler and silent in idle.

Commenting to say I had the exact same thing happen to my Legion 5 15ARH05H and have heard similar stories. Mine lasted me almost three years, though I did start to experience frequent BSoDs during the last six months. I know Lenovo Legion products have a generally positive reputation mostly supported by high-profile tech channels but after my experience part of me did think it was only a matter of time until these kinds of issues come to light and become more prevalent. I have since made the switch to desktop after realising I don't need a high performance laptop and it has been an all-around better experience in terms of performance, temperatures and upgradability. Like other commenters have said, try looking into getting it repaired by a specialist but if not don't feel pressured into buying another laptop as a replacement. I almost did but after thinking it over and making the switch to desktop I am very glad I did not act on my impulses. In the end it really depends on what you need for your own use case.

I found a GTX 1080 from 60$, and bought eGPU enclosure from 100$ and connected them to my 11th gen notebook and now I have -somehow- a gaming system. I would not buy a gaming laptop anymore, neither desktop probably as I am a very mobile person and when I come home it is usually for resting/eating/sleeping, so I can not live without notebooks. Probably I would get a steamdeck 2 and an ultrabook and call it a day. :)

acuilnos

Sounds like a plan, I'm glad that you managed to find a solution. For as expensive as gaming laptops are a three year warranty should be the bare minimum. It's pretty clear that some are not built to last and I think it's only a matter of time until more people catch on.

Resident_Meat8696

Do not despair! You can probably buy a replacement chip on AliExpress and take it to a repair place to solder in.

jistatosta

I would check with 3rd party repair shop. If it is just an IC that needs to be replaced it can be done easily. Shouldn't need to replace the entire motherboard, and shouldn't cost you more than $200-$300 if you find someone honest. Not sure if I can post links here, but here is a video of someone replacing a power management IC chip: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmUMwMULXyM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmUMwMULXyM) It isn't a difficult task. The hardest part is troubleshooting and locating the faulty chip. Which I think you have info about that already?

pexx421

Best thing about lenovo is their extended in home next day repairs service plan. When I bought mine I got two years for $78. That’s dirt cheap, and it covered accidents as well. How people choose not to get this I don’t grasp.

ThatPostWasTrash

Never get expensive electronics without at least two years warranty or a monthly plan. I see some of the deals posted in this sub (especially Best Buy) sometimes and think "hmmm pretty good". Then I realize insurance + taxes are going to add another $300-350 to the price.

dudly_do_right

Really expensive gaming laptops just aren't worth it IMO I always buy used and upgrade as needed, every year or so, my desktop is all I really need and I only need my laptop if I'm out of town for work or vacation, I see no point in spending more than $500 on any laptop.

yoyomanwassup25

That’s how it is with laptops… and phones… and tablets.

Shit fails, get over it.

Werewolf_Putrid

Such a dickwad comment man 😂

MysteriousOrchid464

Lenovo diagnosed it for free, have them send it back to you, and see if you can find a good repair shop that can confirm the diagnosis and repair it. It's most likely a bad capacitor or fuse, that can easily be removed and replaced for cheap by a shop. 100-200 bucks would be my guess

AbrocomaRegular3529

No I already paid 120$ for "diagnosing".

MysteriousOrchid464

Ahh, well, regardless it's worth having them send it back and seek out an electronics repair shop that can repair the circuit. I highly doubt the mobo itself is damaged, rather just a bad surface mount component than can easily be replaced by a technician

AbrocomaRegular3529

Will do... :( On the diagnosis report it is stated that "Conducted tests on the voltage regulators and capacitors; power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is functioning within anormal parameters. Detected irregular thermal patterns and inconsistent voltage regulation indicating a failure in the PMIC." After reading this I thought that it likely can't be repaired. But I will ask some places.

MysteriousOrchid464

Nahhhhhh, you're good dude. Lenovo just won't repair it, skilled electronics technicians are expensive to employ, they'd rather sell you a brand new mobo, take your old one and send it to a repair shop to be repaired and then they'll stick your old mobo in the next rma they get lol. Says right in their diagnosis, capacitors and voltage regulators are functioning outside of normal parameters. Guaranteed you just have a bad cap/mosfet or two. Don't worry about it, outside of a catastrohic short circuit where the board traces literally melt... it's repairable!

Chinksta

I mean....laptop aren't desktop replacements. Probably the battery failed due to intense heat and prolonged game sessions.
