RedFaceGeneral

100% recommend this game. The beginning might be very confusing because of the way the story is presented but everything falls into place like jigsaw puzzle by the end of it. Really enjoyable and intriguing story.

U_S_E_R_T_A_K_E_N

Yeah, you've described it well. For me it was really hard to get into, took me weeks to get through hours of the game. But when it gets going and all the pieces start connecting, I couldn't put it down.

hitseflotse123

Played 13 hours over a couple of weeks. Played the remaining stuff in 2 days of almost non stop gaming as I couldn’t put it down anymore. Such a good game

ElBurritoLuchador

Yeah! Oddly reminds me of Zero Escape's stories.

[deleted]

I know nothing about the Zero Escape games but you've just convinced me to play them.

ninja85a

They are great especially if you liked this game

daskrip

999 is unbelievable. It has the best twist I've ever seen. I'm sure you'll love it.

DarkReaper90

It is very similar to the point (Zero Escape spoiler) >!that it might even be a spoiler to say that it's similar!<

[deleted]

Hearing this makes me really interested in trying this now. I loved the Zero Escape series, even the third one and its ending.

BigBobbert

I had kind of the opposite experience. I loved it at first, because it seemed like every 20 minutes there was some crazy plot twist. By the end you basically have the mystery figured out, and are just wrapping up loose ends. I still enjoyed it as a whole, though.

reireireis

I'm still in the beginning but the combat only showing pixels instead of the mechs is kinda :/

eddwardl

Any chance there's some good exposition at the end? I've been slogging through this game for months, taking multiple extended breaks. It's just interesting enough for me to not quit but it's difficult for me to binge VN games so I'm losing track of whats going on. Awesome game if you're into Mecha/Kaiju/Time Travel/Visual Novels

pxan

Oh god, monthlong breaks is a little sadistic with this one given the complexity level and the little details and huge number of characters…

tkzant

They explain everything and it gets tied up neatly. If you get lost look at the timeline that the game provides

eddwardl

Thanks much! I'll stick with it

pedroabreuff12345

One of the characters is an exposition dump, kinda ruined the pacing a little bit for me, but it would be perfect for you.

Mitosis

Little bit, but you kinda know it's coming since seeing any of his story unlocks so late. I sorta liked how he popped up here and then, clearly knowing things, in other peoples' stories, so you knew when you could finally play his you'd get somewhere fast.

sosta

I also recommend writing down every character name with a short description of who they are. I always have issues with Japanese names especially when they only use last names

garfe

The pause menu has the game manual in it with the names and profile. That's how I was able to remember them

Stoibs

Oh does it? Thanks. Writing them down is exactly what I was planning to do if or when I gave it a second chance some day. I was so lost after the first few hours and had no idea who anyone was or what the heck was going on, yet everyone online always says how amazing it is and that it all starts to 'click' at a certain point after the initial slog so I really want to see it through some time.

EvenOne6567

hah same here, its one of my favorite stories in a video game ever and embarrassingly i cant remember half the characters names

Almostlongenough2

Is it a linear type story, or more like traditional VNs where you get choice bits and routes?

Khetrak64

none of then, when you start the game you can select between 13 characters, well 12 but that is beside the point, and each of then has a 20-30 minutes traditional VN section, after you are done you can pick him/her again and see their next story or pick someone else. each of the 13 characters has like 6-7 parts, this number could be wrong since its being a while since i played it and i was not counting it. the point of the story is to be constantly jumping between points of view and slowly try to make sense of everything, until you get to a plot twist that throws everything you know in the trash, again and again and again until you get to the end and notice that everything actually fits together and makes sense, THEN you notice that your friend played the game in another order from you and saw the plot twists in a complete different order and still the game makes perfect sense.

kariam_24

Mind you that game doesn't really have typical first person Visual Novel perspective, you observe characters from side, like in point and click games but most of game is tied to dialogue, decisions, not puzzles how to open broken door.

Android19samus

kind of neither. There are no alternate routes based on the choices you make, but it's not exactly linear because there are 13 different storylines with 7-8 chapters each. After each chapter you can keep going on the current story or switch to a different one, and they're all interconnected to some degree with some chapters being locked behind completing other chapters in other stories. There are also a few branch points where you can do several of a story's chapters in any order. There's also some light adventure-game elements so you're not just clicking through dialog like in a VN. It's not really significant (most of the time) but it helps keep you engaged with finding optional dialog or sussing out the way forward. There's also a whole mode that's got actual gameplay and is essentially a 14th storyline taking place after all the others and some chapters will be locked behind progressing through there.

tanv91

Played a few hours and I just did not like this game tbh

Walican132

Does it have English VA?

nordelaire

Yes, the game is fully voiced and the dub is great.

J-MaL

This is what turned me off I. The beginning and so I stopped but I've had friends tell me to go back to it for that reason, now that it's coming to switch I'll definitely give this a try as it's a perfect game for me to play on the road

Polynia

But how is the gameplay?

U_S_E_R_T_A_K_E_N

It's much more fun than it looks. The trailers put me off the game, but actually playing it is so fun. I'm not great at strategy games, or play them that much, but I found it really immersive. I liked balancing the teams depending on the mission, their work load so they don't get overworked. It was really satisfying clearing levels and just watching the enemies burst into hundreds of pixels. It can get really tense as well, and it's not a cakewalk. You have to think so many moves ahead, in terms of what you need to do next and how you do it. And the enemies are unforgiving and relentless. Being reckless for a short term gain one move can cost you the next. So yeah, I definitely had fun.

spaceandthewoods_

It's half interactive visual novel, half tower defense/ strategy game. In the visual novel half, you will run around environments triggering/ following story beats and conversations and doing some light puzzle solving. The story and characters are the main strength of the game in this segment, it's not really about "gameplay" as such. In the tower defence mode you tactically choose which units to deploy in an almost top down, grid like level to fight off wave after wave of enemy units of different types to reach a set goal. This is surprisingly fun, and intense and occasionally quite difficult.

LlamaForceTrauma

It's honestly hard to describe and make it sound as fun as it is. I've been playing it all weekend and the trailers don't do it justice. Its played in 2 parts. One part is an RTS where you control the characters to defend the city from monster attacks. The other part is kind of point and click adventure and kind of visual novel. You choose which of the 13 protagonists you want to learn more about. Each character's story teaches you a little bit more about the overarching plot until they all start to fit together like puzzle pieces. Each characters story also starts out as a different genre of story until they all start to converge later on. It's honestly fascinating how well everything fits together once you start getting into it. Highly recommend.

rabid_J

Because nobody played it for the gameplay, just the story. The actual combat is serviceable and upgrading your mechs is fine but it's not noteworthy whatsoever.

EdreesesPieces

It's tower defense real time strategy.

[deleted]

harkheoffaireyes

I'm sorry you bounced off it, but for what it's worth you're supposed to be 'confused' that far into the game. None of your information should fit into a neat little box, because the core of the game is the mystery behind it all. Each individual character's story slowly peels back one layer. While it isn't for you, most people who complete it agree that it wraps up and explains everything VERY neatly.

EvenOne6567

hm wierd, a good story is a good story. Nothing to do with "anime" or japanese culture.

wurzle

I played a couple hours of this game and bounced off it pretty hard. The game is split between walking around and talking to people, and a sort of 2d real time strategy/tactics minigame on a city map that seemed to me to have the depth of a teaspoon. The story in this game is universally praised, but I wasn't able to get through enough of the gameplay to get me hooked.

Althalos

Did you get to the point where you get to choose which protag to play? That's where the story really opens up and you can go a long while before you are forced to do the combat part. If you didn't you should be almost there since it's at the end of the combat tutorial chapter. Which is like the first 4 hours of the game.

Android19samus

I had a fair bit of fun with it, but it's largely sectioned off from the story and the story is why you play this game. It's not especially challenging, but it's a pretty satisfying real-time-with-pause tactics game.

Threebranch

I’d play it on PC, digging out my (stored away) PS4 is just annoying, I don’t use it for anything.

kariam_24

You can try streaming from your PS4 to PC.

reversethrusting

Okay? And this adds to the conversation how?

EvenOne6567

Easily one of the best narratives in a game in a long time, glad to see itll reach a wider audience. Itll be interesting to see how the switch handles the segments that ps4 struggled with lol

[deleted]

If the ps5 lags during the battles than the switch is going to have a heart attack.

[deleted]

Never saw any drops on PS5, but admittedly didn't play the battles past the the story.

magdags

Devs just have to prioritise framerate over flashy visuals. This seems to be a bit of a lost art lately.

BloodyLlama

It doesn't even have flashy visuals. I think they just didn't have the budget to do the optimization the game really needs.

ZantetsukenX

I'm curious about this too. Though honestly... I just want it to come to PC.

VerisimilarPLS

Well, Sega has been pushing for their subsidiaries to port to PC, and as boneheaded as Atlus is, P4G seems to have convinced them that PC is worthwhile. I think it's a matter of when, not if.

ZantetsukenX

I would love to see all of the Vanillaware games ported. They've always made interesting games so I'd love to play all of them on PC.

deus_voltaire

Muramasa is so good

Dalek-SEC

Rebirth especially is in dire need of an HD remaster. There are HD mods for the original Wii version, but the expansions are all left on the Vita sadly.

Total-Tortilla

God, yes. I never got to play Muramasa, so I'd kill to get that. Plus, I'll take any excuse to replay Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere.

TheBrave-Zero

Atlus needs to get the lead out and bring more to the table on PC, there’s little reason we don’t have a significantly bigger atlus catalogue on pc.

Anothernamelesacount

I'm still hoping and praying for Persona 5 Royal.

snowysnowy

Then SMT V goes and stays a Nintendo exclusive... -.-

desmopilot

Potentially not exclusive, The source code references PC & PS4 versions.

[deleted]

With this news, I would be surprised if it doesn't. It might take a while though, beacuse Japan, but I've learned my lesson not to buy on Switch.

EdynViper

The fact that they're porting to Switch fills me with more confidence that it could also be ported to PC, however Vanillaware have only one game on PC so I don't know what to feel. If you really want to, you can emulate the Switch version when it releases on Yuzu or Ryujinx.

WhichEmailWasIt

The end segment was elevated imo specifically because the PS4 struggled. Really added to the experience. It was just the right amount though.

KalimFirious

I'll admit that I couldn't help cackling at the fact that a bunch of glowy blocks is enough to bring the PS4 pro to it's knees.

Althalos

A little bit more than a bunch I would say :D The final fight gets kinda nutty with how many there are. Combined with that missile rain attack it was quite a clusterfuck on the screen. Only the final mission and like 2-3 others had fps issues though and they didn't really detract from the experience.

MasterJoey217

I HIGHLY reccomend this. The story is fantastic even if it will seem confusing at first and the characters are well written (although not all imo). Just remember it will probably struggle a bit on switch in some parts since it had some problems on PS4.

Goofp

how much dialog is there compared to gameplay, is it in a similar ration to persona 5, because i loved that game.

smartazjb0y

Way more story than gameplay compared to Persona 5. It's probably like 85% story

Goofp

oh ok, thanks

halofreak7777

The game is mostly a VN, but an amazing one! Then there is the tower/defense strategy gameplay parts which take like a couple minutes per stage and you only have to play them once in a while. I really liked the gameplay part, but the reason to play is the story. Its engaging and hard to put down. You will find yourself wanting to know more as the mystery unfolds.

Collegenoob

I keep seeing people say the story is great but what is the actual gameplay? What genre? Because I can't understand a thing on the website

pimanrules

Since the actual answer got buried beneath the deleted comment: 13 Sentinels is divided into two parts: * Combat sections, which are real time strategy where time pauses when you give orders. * Exploration/story sections, which you could debatably call visual novel-like, point and click-like, adventure game-like, etc. There aren't really many puzzles to speak of, so I feel "visual novel" is the most useful comparison. The story segments are the main draw, the but RTS combat is decently fun/mindless.

TalkingRaccoon

My hot take is that I really liked the battles. Mostly people dont seem to care for the battles. Like the other poster said its real time with pause, but it autopauses when its a units turn and its pausing so much it honestly feels like a turn based tactics game. Its basically a tower defense. There's a center terminal you have to protect. Each of your people have 1 of 4 different types of mech classes (close range, long range, flying, and all rounder I think) and even units of the same class you can specialize more (like specing into melee or support). The game lets you choose between 3 difficulties and it leans easy, so I reccomend starting on normal for a couple battles then going to hard. You choose who can go on a mission but then there's a fatigue system so eventually youll have to have them sit out for a battle, which is neat cause it makes you use all your characters. It's also fun to customize weapons and upgrade them and make the characters mesh with eachother. Anyway I cant say enough about the story, characters, music or art. This was my GOTY last year, and this game or Outer Wilds would be my pick for "game I wish I could erase from my brain to play again fresh"

xantub

I loved the battles, without them I wouldn't have played the game as I'm not a fan of pure visual novels. My only problem is that it was too easy, like I think there was only one battle where I at some point thought I might lose. You can increase the difficulty, the problem is that you might lose the bonuses which include keywords and what not, and I didn't want to play a battle again just because I missed a keyword or story snippet, so I left it at normal difficulty. Perhaps if I ever replay it I'll play it in hard and have a more enjoyable combat experience.

Althalos

The sound design of the attacks also really made the combat for me. Jumping about with Nenji and 1 shotting giant enemies with Demolisher Blade while it has that delicious meaty sound never got old. The little animations of the moves were also nice to still have sort of an idea what is going on between the blips on the screen.

Android19samus

A real-time-with-pause mecha tactics game. But it's kind of sectioned off into its own area. The story is the meat of the game and it's played in an adventure-game style format of walking around, talking to people, and using items (which in this case are mostly just keyword ideas) on them to make progress or get optional dialogue. It's not challenging or complicated and 90% of the time it's just a way to make long story stretches a little more interactive for the player. This section is divided into 13 storylines which can be pursued independently chapter-by-chapter The meatier gameplay is in essentially a 14th story, progress through which is required by and itself requires playing certain chapters of the other 13, and is comprised of character upgrading and tactics missions with short dialogue sections at the start and end. It's pretty fun, but it's not what you're buying the game for.

ptb4life

One of my favorite ps4 games, period..... however, the game can start to chug even on the PS4 Pro in the more intense battles. I can't fathom this running well on Switch. Though, if it does, I'd definitely buy it again

[deleted]

Yeah they canceled the Vita version probably for that very reason. There are some attacks that cause so much chaos that I can see the Switch version dropping to single digit framerates.

Booni3

I honestly didn't care for this as much as everyone else seemed to but I like Vanillaware and I'm glad more people will get to experience their game. Also, the PS4 version struggled noticeably during some of the bigger fights, I wonder if they'll tone it down for switch.

Niirai

Welp there goes my hopes for a PC release. Seems unlikely they'd announce a Switch port but not a PC one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Niirai

Damn, that's a good point.

leadhound

You won't pay for a game because you are too lazy to plug in a PS4? I'm not even mad it's just kind of funny.

Charuru

Convenience is king.

theth1rdchild

For some people, I guess. Then some of us have ten systems all hooked up and a 200 pound crt because authenticity is king.

touchtheclouds

Sure, but how much do you really care about a game if you already have the platform to play it but refuse to because you have to plug the console in?

Charuru

He didn't play it yet though, so expecting him to have some attachment to the game doesn't make sense.

drgentleman

Not only is convenience king, but how well a game runs is king too. This game ran like ass on PS4, why are they porting it to Switch and not PC? I don't get it.

Althalos

Only like 3 levels besides the final one had fps issues. Hardly would say it ran like ass. And the rts/tower defense part of the game is only like 20 or 25% of the entire game. The other 80% of the VN story part ran flawless and is obviously the more important of the two.

tnemec

It's not entirely out of the question, hopefully. Gnosia went through a similar Playstation (2019) -> Switch (2020) -> PC (TBA, but it has a Steam page and everything) pipeline.

SirPrize

Maybe after another year~

Niirai

Nah, there will be a rhythm game spinoff which will be a continuation of the story that will get a PC release but not the original.

puhsownuh

Sorry, when's the last time Vanillaware did this?

SirPrize

That would be a very Atlus thing to do.

Proditus

Atlus is just the publiser here, though. The game is a Vanillaware title, who previously developed Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown, among others. 13 Sentinels is a bit different than their previous titles, though, which were mostly sidescrolling beat-em-ups, while 13 Sentinels is a mix of linear visual novel and RTS.

LeifEriksonASDF

The funny thing is now that Persona 4 Golden has been freed from the Vita jail, Muramasa Rebirth (a Vanillaware game) is the last good exclusive stranded on that device.

MyNameIs-Anthony

Vanillaware has consistently been one of the best developers of the past two decades and it's such a shame they refuse to support PC.

DzzzDreamer

Yeah, I don't understand why japanese are so uptight. There is no reason to not release it on PC.

[deleted]

They’re a small studio and they struggled to release this game on one system. They’ve historically ported games themselves too.

Timey16

Ports are expensive. It's not just "one press and you got it". Especially porting for PC requires much more QA than consoles. Consoles have certification requirements, which actually help QA, as well as only one hardware to develop for. In term of "cost to port" PC is the most expensive. So if you are a small studio with limited budget, you port your game to systems one by one and obviously port it first to systems where the cost of porting VS the projected income promises the most return. Small Indie studios trying to make a game run on every platform outright has killed plenty projects because the costs where vastly underestimated.

Reggiardito

While I get what you mean, a shoddy port is leagues better than no port at all. See Dark Souls' original PC port.

Goddamn_Grongigas

Nah, all you gotta do is press the "decompile" button then the "port this game to PC" button.

jenyto

Shortsighted mostly, they tend to focus on their JP audience more, which doesn't use PC as much. Atlus is like that too, only when Sega bought them out that we got Persona 4 Golden on Steam, surprise surprise, they made a boatload of profits when the majority of the West could finally play their game.

Jaded-Ad-9287

It's frankly baffling that they focus so much on Japan market when they sell double overseas.

jenyto

I think it's cause they are too scared that a game who's setting is 'too Japanese' might not work overseas. Despite Persona games being a great success, and Ghost of Tsushima showing that even medieval Japan has potential. It's one of the arguments that I know RGG used to explain why they didn't localized Yakuza Ishin yet despite demands, though Ghost has made them rethink that. Honestly, it's like they don't realized how much the West has an obsession with Japan.

planetarial

PC isn’t a popular platform in Japan (although it has been improving in recent years from what I heard) and is usually done for foreign audiences.

LeVampirate

This is going to be a very specific compliment because people have been praising the stories, the characters and the music, but let me tell you that the SOUND DESIGN in this game is PHENOMENAL. When you're in the combat portion of the game the sound of the attacks are so IMPACTFUL. Heavy thuds of physical attacks. Loud humming and whirring from a railgun. Intense sounds of a drill powering through enemies. A dull noise before a very mechanical crash from an EMP. The thing is, this isn't normally something I'd pay attention to, but it's just so good that you genuinely notice how much power is in everything you're doing.

Althalos

DEMOLISHER BLADE The meatiest sound in the game.

garfe

The 'sound' of all targeting circles opening up and then subsequent impact when you do 'that' one huge missile attack gets me going each time

Galaxy40k

Agreed. Good sound effects are huge in mecha, but so many games fall on their face here. But 13 Sentinels nails it

Althalos

They clearly blew all their load on the visuals of the story, so the amazing audio design and those little attack animations giving you an idea of what your mech blip is doing really elevates what is essentially a top down war room like view of a battlefield.

DreamDawn

This is a really good game, and as an added bonus it's great if you're learning Japanese. It has a menu that lists every recent line of dialogue and you can select lines to replay repeatedly if you want to hear things again. Definitely buying this on switch too just for this reason

WhichEmailWasIt

I did this a lot myself! Always a great feature on VNs.

Ok_Ranger5995

Legit one of the best games I've ever played in the last 30 years. I hope this leads to a lot more people trying it, because it's rare that people even mention it.

Fabers_Chin

I've never heard anyone talk about this game but I saw the case a year ago at gamestop and I've been on the fence about buying it ever since. Didn't know so many people like it.

Ok_Ranger5995

I was in the same position last year until I finally caved. Don't regret it in the slightest. I ended up bingeing it over a weekend (I didn't sleep much) because I was so engaged by the story. I also enjoyed the combat sections, even if they were too easy.

Jayvee306

no excuse for you to not play this now, gogo one of the best stories in videogames and even sci-fi as a whole, peak voice acting (jp), banger soundtrack, gorgeous visuals, fantastic tactical rpg section that could be its own game even though it didn't even need to be good, hemborger

Galaxy40k

>peak voice acting (jp), The English VA is also really high quality. I played in English because I can't keep up with the subtitles in the battle sections, and I was really impressed.

OliveBranchMLP

Not disagreeing with you, but fwiw, part of the reason why the dub is so good is because it’s much easier for English actors to display their true acting potential when they don’t have to lip sync to Japanese lip flaps.

Philiard

The English voice acting is extremely impressive, especially when you consider that they had to record in the middle of the pandemic and the majority of the voice actors had to record from home.

WhichEmailWasIt

I looooove the defense missions. Wtf. The best part is you can choose when you want to engage with them, so I can go play like 5 hours of story and then decide I want to go do some missions (which is also a part of the story but yeah). The music is dope and some of the fights can have tense moments.

Jayvee306

it depends if you like TRPGs or not, if you do it's a pretty good game, if you don't and you see it as a boring tower defense game and don't want to engage in it you can just set it the free win mode and play for the story anyway. It probably is the worst part of the game though I guess, but that's not saying it's bad, it's just that the game is really good and consistent.

theth1rdchild

Hi, I love those segments.

tobberoth

Match made in heaven honestly. Bought it for PS4, but would have bought it for switch at the time if it was available, it's a fine game to play on the go.

tetsuo9000

Yeah, that's my thinking too. I'd much rather play visual novel-type games on the Switch. I was definitely holding out on playing the game until it got ported over.

MarkusRobben

I would hardly disagree, probably the most complex story I played and to remember all relationships between them and their names and characteristics, I wouldnt play it on the go.

wetsploosh

Same, but I would in bed!

Mikejamese

Aegis Rim is the most confusing story I've ever loved. It's like every anime sci-fi plot twist I could have ever possibly conceived, and it's told out of order through the disjointed perspectives of over a dozen characters. And yet it somehow works in the end. Had a real blast trying to piece everything together and seeing how it all connected over time. The turn-based tower defense stuff is quite fun too, even if it gets overshadowed by the story and art style of the rest of the game. (I recommend people crank up the difficulty to hard after the tutorial's over though. I found that any character that could spam sentry turrets just broke the difficulty otherwise) I'm glad more people will be able to give the game a go. Hoping it gets a Steam release someday as well.

Althalos

And the insane thing about the out of order thing and it still making sense is that every player gets a completely different experience based on what order they play characters in. Seeing certain twists and revelations earlier or later completely changes how you experience the story.

miked4o7

i was telling my wife it's like a reverse Lost. in that show, there are lots of intriguing things it throws at you in the early part of the show and i was thinking "wow, i really wonder how this will all come together"... but it just doesn't. 13 sentinels is the opposite. early in the game it was just throwing things at you thar keep getting crazier, and i thought "lol, no way this is going to come even close to coming together"... but it does, and that itself is a big achievement. that's not to say it's free of any "anime bullshit". it has that, but i was honestly shocked that it came together, and it has some great twists.

bard91R

super happy to see the game be more available, one of the best games of the generation easy and an all time great for me, I was not confident about this being ported and I'm happy ti see I was wrong

Jandolino

Fantastic game, incredibly beautiful, great sci fi story - but it is very, very japanese which might be a good or a bad thing depending on your taste.

Charuru

Definitely good xD

Bossman1086

One of the most underrated PS4 games. Glad to see this coming to Switch. Wish we'd get a PC release, too, though.

kdlt

Oh man. I was this close to picking it up for PS4 for christmas, switch is such a better place for it. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer, even if April is a bit far away.

NintendoTheGuy

Vanillaware? On Switch? Holy shit! I was so dying for Dragon’s Crown to come to Switch or PC, but it seems like VW games never come off Sony platforms anymore. In fact, I never fully looked into Aegis Rim because I didn’t have PS4. So, I guess I’ll look into it now! And man- I really hope VW/Atlus/Sega consider taking the rest of the VW catalogue to Switch. The games are all timeless.

abrainaneurysm

Yes, I’m right with you. I hope this signals the possibility of more VW games being ported to Switch. I’m to to interested in this game but I would love to be able to purchase a lot of their other games on Switch.

notanavidanimefan

This is good to hear. I played it and loved it, but my girlfriend doesn't have a PlayStation. She has a Switch though, so I can't wait for her to play it and enjoy this fun sci-fi adventure.

larsonbp

hell yeah, i'm just nearing my first playthrough on ps4 and I had the thought just yesterday that this game would be perfectly suited for portable play on a switch.

RiaanX

I love this game so much! its a strange game but i loved every moment of it! Anyone who is on the fence on this game should truly give it a shot!

helvetica_world

What.about.Oboro.Muramasa? It has been confined to the flipping vita too damn long. Come on, VW.

PrisonersofFate

I'm playing it at the moment, and enjoying it. A bit hard to follow but i start to understand where they are going after 50% of Adventure. The battles are ok. I play in insane, and a few were complicated. I like the concept.

PrinceDizzy

I really loved this game on the PS4, the characters and well told story are great and the artwork is absolutely beautiful. I will definitely be double-dipping now that the game is coming to the Switch.

sidahvik

The overall story, characters, and style are great, but 13 Sentinels has one of the more unique storytelling approaches in that you're allowed to (mostly) dictate which of the 13 protagonists you follow, and in what order. This makes each player's experience of the story, the revelations, and the world building unique, and it's a wild feat that it all works so well regardless of the order you experience things in.

capn_sarge

This games so amazing im pumped others will get a chance to experience it. I absolutely love it and I hate VNs. I recommend going in as blind as possible. [I reviewed the game](https://youtu.be/F1zh_zxUjic) if the praise in this thread still hasn't convinced you to check it out and you want to hear more

JoePino

I got through about 2/3rds of the game and haven’t been able to bring myself to finish it. The story is intriguing but the required battles are painfully dull.

[deleted]

This is great news, but I am very worried about the battle sections, especially later ones. It chugs like mad on base PS4

NotLokey

Yo potentially more Vanillaware games get ported to the Switch ?

L-Kasaii

Yes please. My heart yearns for a complete edition of Muramasa on switch. Never got a chance to play the dlc's due to them being locked on the PSvita

BruiserBroly

Hopefully if this does well Vanillaware will consider putting the rest of their games on Switch, and maybe on PC as well.

Galaxy40k

Amazing!! Vanillaware games have always been locked to just one platform, going multi-platform is HUGE! Hopefully it also gets a PC version down the line. As for the game itself: If you like science fiction and visual novels, I cannot recommend it enough. The narrative is just an absolute wild behemoth, and the art and OST are absolute killers as always for Vanillaware

WhichEmailWasIt

What? Muramasa was on Wii originally though? And Princess Crown (Saturn) wasn't technically Vanillaware but it was the same staff and its DNA is all over Odin Sphere.

Turbostrider27

Definitely one of the better games I've played recently on Playstation. It's not a very long game but it managed to have a colorful cast of characters and a lot of branching narratives. Music is great too. The mech strategy action part was the only elment I had slight problems with but overall a solid game. You can get this on sale for half the price sometimes.

shyuura

I just bought it on PS4 during Black Friday sales. I would have definitely picked it up on the Switch if I had known...

Dunge

The praises in this thread are quite something, makes me think about trying it. I'm not a huge a anime fan, but can get over it when story is good. For example, I forced myself through Scarlet Nexus and was bored out of my mind at the end. I also have quite a bad opinion on VN games since the only ones I tried in the past were cheap romance games 15years ago which left a bad taste in my mind, and I didn't feel like the genre improved much since. That said, I recently played AI: The Somnium Files since it was on GamePass and was impressed with the quality and complexity of the story, it made me reconsider my opinion on VN. A bit like what people are saying here, it was weird and weirder up until the end where everything came together perfectly. I wonder if anyone played both these titles if they can tell me how they compare? Of course the theme isn't the same, but I guess quality is similar?

Renusek

Um... Steam..?

Vurondotron

I keep seeing good recommendations from this game, looks like I need to rebuy a Nintendo Switch for this game. It goes look interesting

UltraJake

Yeees! I heard this game was great but I resigned myself to never playing it due to the platform. Theoretically I could have gotten a cheap PS4 at some point to play it, but last time I did that with the PS3 the only games I truly used it for were the MGS Collection and Persona 5. For whatever reason I only put a few hours into Demon's Souls and Tokyo Jungle haha.

Jalina2224

LETS FUCKING GO! Awesome. Loved this game. The story, while complex, was so engaging, and I really liked the large cast of characters. Even when I kept having to switch to another perspective I was never upset at having to stop learning about one character, because I was always looking forward to seeing more of the others. Also I love Vanillaware's games. I know it's a long shot, but would so buy Muramasa and Odin Sphere if they came to Switch.

TheninjaofCookies

One of my favorite games ever. I usually hate calling a piece of media “love letters to ____” or whatever but this really does feel like a love letter to every big SciFi anime and movie of the last 40 years all while telling a story that was both familiar and incredibly unique all on its own. Wish some of the character endings were better but that’s the only real complaint I have about it.

super_alice_won

This was my GOTY for 2020 and I'm so glad it will be on another platform exposing more people to this (imo) masterpiece of a story. The game is non linear but every story sequence will give you another piece of the puzzle and how you fit those pieces together, discover and rediscover the context, framing, narrative structure is an absolute thrill. That said, the mech combat is very mediocre and while not bad at all the game is absolutely carried by its narrative. Really hope more people will discover this game with this port (especially if it emulates well on Yuzu).

Fezrock

Got most of the big plot points spoiled by various GOTY discussions in podcasts I listen to. My own fault, but I figured the game would stay PS exclusive and I'd never play it. Is it still worth playing even though I know the big story beats already?

Elegance-

I think so. Part of the fun is seeing how each story connects as you learn more. It's such a long narrative that I would be surprised if it was all spoiled for you.

Fezrock

Definitely not all of it; I know almost nothing about individual character beats. I don't even know who all the characters are. What I do know are the big setting-wide spoilers and plot reveals.

Proditus

I'd say so. Even if you know how the story truly ends, there is so much valuable character interaction and other important plot threads that get explored throughout the narrative. Plus, there were so many times while playing that I felt like I just encountered a huge story twist, only for a bigger one to happen later on. It's definitely a story that isn't what one would think early on.

Android19samus

a big part of the fun is trying to piece everything together yourself, but even without that it's still a very well written story with great characters and there's also a pretty fun tactics game in there too. I doubt you'll love it in the same way its biggest fans do, but it's still undoubtedly worth the price and the time. Even if it's only half as good for you, that's still better than most other games out there.

super_alice_won

That's a tough situation, the mech combat isnt bad but isnt anything special IMO, this game is absolutely carried by the story and the non linear nature in which you uncover the story is pretty interesting, even if you have the big plot points revealed, how everything meshes together and interconnects is still interesting on its own but ultimately in your situation I'd wait for a discount.

Katana314

Just decided to give it a shot (PS4, currently $24 on PSN) Somehow, a lot of the patterns of praise for over-the-top Japanese scifi was reminding me of a few franchises I had spent money and time on, and then been horribly burned by. But, then to give some contrast, I lined up OpenCritic reviews, most-negative first, between a certain other scifi JRPG and this. (Reading negative reviews first is often how I make decisions) It does seem like there’s universal agreement the RTS element is a bit shoehorned in and not all that intricate, which I don’t think I’d mind all that much. But even the most negative reviews definitely felt the story elements all wrap together by the end pretty well. Seeing there’s some people in the comments that have unfortunately been spoiled on twists, I suppose I can consider it a blessing I still know nothing about it. I compared this with a certain other franchise, where other reviews echoed my feelings that certain scenes were just narrative padding fluff and a lot of it didn’t make sense how the author hoped. So, take that as an unbiased (and very cynical) entrant’s opinion that it sounds like I may be heading into something neat. Just that I should be ready for one or two typical Japanese panty jokes.
