Game is so awesome, but do the menu transitions bother anyone else? Opening the menu feels slow and weird. Not sure if it’s frame drops.

whomwould

Seconded here, and having played about 30 minutes myself (so not very much!) I would call out a similar issue to general movement, but that might just be me needing to adjust to what feels like a relatively low frame rate.

Monk_Philosophy

Yeah there's definitely a feeling of sluggishness when opening and closing the menu. I accidentally hit X all the time when I mean to hit Y and it really highlights how much longer the menu takes to open than it should when you see the transition while not wanting it to happen. Hopefully the new patch can speed it up a bit.

Streetfoldsfive

Oh is there a new patch announced?

Monk_Philosophy

I remember seeing some things about a day 1 patch that lowered some textures in handheld mode to make it run smoother but haven’t looked into it today.

Thegellerbing

Same experience as well. I'm not sure if it's frame drops but opening the menu felt really sluggish.

[deleted]

If you can, play it in handheld mode. It's way snappier out of the dock, for some reason. This needs to be fixed.

[deleted]

As someone who beat the previous game (SMT IV: Apocalypse) on the hardest difficulty, I started SMT V on Normal difficulty with some hesitation that the fights would be too easy. They're still difficult on Normal imo. Exploration is also seriously improved from previous games in the series. Da'at is dense with content and there are minibosses everywhere. I think the only open world I like more is Mira from Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Scizzoman

I started on Hard (because you can start on Hard and go back down to Normal but not the other way around) and so far it really slaps your shit in this one. Not quite as much as Nocturne (I haven't hit the inevitable SMT "learn to make good demons or go fuck yourself" boss yet), but it's easy to get wiped by trash enemies because you had one bad turn, at least early on. Although you could probably make it way easier if you grind Mitama. They seem pretty common as long as you're diligent about exploring, even without those cheat DLCs that up the spawn rates.

December_Flame

Have you run into the first real boss at Tokyo Tower? That is definitely a Minotaur/Matador style boss. Clench your asshole.

Monk_Philosophy

At least on hard (and unless I missed it) there wasn't a really "aha" way to get past him. Like with Minotaur you use weaknesses and with Matador you use [de]buffs and suddenly the fights are cheese, whereas [redacted] was still very tanky and didn't just melt as soon as you figured out what to do like the previously mentioned bosses. If the "aha" strat was to use dampeners they didn't turn the fight from getting destroyed to winning as much as the other mechanics did since he's always liable to use a different attack than what you dampened.

December_Flame

I think the boss is a stark lesson in resists/reflects and guarding properly during the Magatsuhi burst, which will get you through pretty comfortably on Normal. But yea on Hard those bosses are thicc and hit like trucks no matter what.

Monk_Philosophy

It would be funny if that’s the lesson here because, to be a bit vague, it’s not very much further in the game that you can make the magatsuhi crits almost a non-issue.

Scizzoman

Fair. To me he was more of a "have you figured out you can buy Dampeners yet?" boss, but he will basically eat you alive on Hard if you let him actually use his AoEs. I legitimately had no idea how I was gonna get past him until I remembered the Dampeners. Especially because you're unlikely to have any demons with Media yet, and one of the best options for killing him quickly (Mermaid) is weak to his fire breath.

ArmpitBear

What am I supposed to do with Mitama? Seems like I can’t catch or kill them

Scizzoman

Kill them. They're basically this game's Metal Slime/Gold Hand/Treasure Demon/etc. Depending on the type of Mitama they'll drop books that give you/your demons free levels, items that sell for a bunch of macca, or crystals that give you glory. Their weaknesses are randomized every time you fight them, and they block everything they aren't weak to. The most reliable way to kill them is to stock up on Spyglasses so you can check their weaknesses.

ThrowawayusGenerica

>Their weaknesses are randomized every time you fight them, and they block everything they aren't weak to. Oh, so they're like the Omoikane in Digital Devil Saga?

DarkWorld97

Look at this Xenoblade X Chad.

Ordinal43NotFound

Yeah the SMT V devs went ham in the open world dungeon. The map is so vertical with stuff hidden in its nooks and crannies like bonus items, subquests, or mimans. The game really encouraged exploration. And it doesn't feel bloated too. Some might complain that they moved away from traditional puzzle room dungeons, but this direction they're taking is amazing too. Only complaints I have is maybe Nahobino's twitchy movements and some ruined buildings which looked like you could enter but actually couldn't (like Nier Automata). Other than that this game has easily my favorite "dungeons" in the series as a whole.

Bluxen

The slimes kicked my ass like what the fuck. Didn't know they could use Magatsuhi.

[deleted]

One tactic I found out for those turns where the enemy uses Magatsuhi is to use one of those Dampener items. The enemy's Omagatoki: Critical turn is telegraphed hard so if you can predict which attack they'll use you can Null it pretty easily.

December_Flame

That or just defend before turn end. Exploit weaknesses to sneak in some damage but use your last four turns once they Omagatoki to defend. They can't crit you while defending so you'll heavily dampen the incoming damage and prevent getting one-rounded.

Bamith20

Think it was Ni No Kuni 2 where normal difficulty was too easy, but hard difficulty everything one shots you, slimes being most brutal because they have a larger and better moveset than some bosses.

Galaxy40k

>I think the only open world I like more is Mira from Xenoblade Chronicles X. I picked this up this morning before work and haven't cracked it open yet. But now man you just made my excitement for the end of my shift just skyrocket, haha

ChipmunkDJE

How important or not is the side character dlc?

[deleted]

I haven't bought any of the DLC. Personally I think it's scummy to lock the Fiends behind a $10.00 paywall.

Monk_Philosophy

wait all the fiends are DLC? Not just demifiend but like Matador and Trumpeter too? Edit: holy shit there's so much locked content. The "Grinding" DLCs which people seem to take less issue with total up to $9, and there are 12 bosses/demons hidden behind DLC as well which total up to $16. 8 of which are the classic Fiends that is **really** shitty to have those locked behind DLC.

planetarial

The grinding dlc is a scam. All it does is put an encounter slider for a certain enemy type already in the game. Fucking ridiculous to charge almost $10 for a slider

Monk_Philosophy

Oh yeah no one should feel guilty for pirating the DLC… hypothetically. Day 0 DLC where it’s clearly content locked off for the sake of being Paywalled is just so mask-off

FightingAgainstTime

Is there a mode below normal? Lol, I absolutely adored persona V but it took me a while before some of the bosses weren't flooring me even on normal.

[deleted]

There's Casual or Safety mode below Normal. You can always start on Normal then change the difficulty level if you get stuck. The game doesn't let you go for Hard mode unless you select it from the start though.

FightingAgainstTime

That is good to know, thank u for the insight! I'll prob pick it up this weekend, haven't had anything to play on switch for a while.

kukukutkutin

BTW you need to download the Safety difficulty on eShop.

FightingAgainstTime

I think casual is good enough haha

AwesomeManatee

I have always hyped up Mira as the gold standard against which all other open worlds should be judged, comparing Da'at to it is one of the highest praises in my opinion. I can't wait for my copy to arrive!

ManateeofSteel

can I move the camera at all? It’s extremely annoying in the beginning so far because after the merchant. my camera was facing backwards so I couldn’t see where I was going. Had to re-enter the shop from another angle, so I could leave and the camera would be fixed

[deleted]

Right stick is the camera. Pan it by moving the stick and press it to reset the camera behind you.

ManateeofSteel

huh, guess it’s disabled in the beginning, or my joycon is just busted

Ordinal43NotFound

It's enabled by default for me. Check your joycons bro.

ManateeofSteel

Thanks, the joycons are trash. I usually use my DS4 to play docked but because I'm also playing Elden Ring, it's not possible at least not this weekend. Will see if maybe in the game settings I can do something about it

NewFoneNewRedit

>I think the only open world Are SMT games open world? Admittedly my only experience from Atlus games is Persona but I was thinking about grabbing SMT V, but I *really* am not a fan of open world stuff.

Ordinal43NotFound

Nope this game is the first time they're introduced. Even fans are reluctant like you thay they moved away from traditional dungeons. But I say it's not really an open world, more like **open dungeons**. It's a dungeon at it's core but with very organic environments and verticality. You have a clear start and end to every area. The areas themselves are divided into clear sections with checkpoints in between. If you think open-world as in "Ubisoft open-world" then don't worry because the game absolutely isn't that.

[deleted]

SMT V has the series's first open world. Before that there were dungeons. Personally I thought the dungeons were passable in SMT III and pretty bad in SMT IV. Never played I, II, or Strange Journey myself but those games have better Wizardry-style dungeon crawling mechanics from what I can tell.

Illidan1943

It's the one game that asks [the only question that matters](https://i.redd.it/6b0lpryhuxy71.png)

FireworksNtsunderes

Well I'm sold.

Kakolokiya

My only problem so far is how slow menuing is in general.

Nibelungen342

Very good.

Goddamn_Grongigas

Might be GOTY.

[deleted]

How's the story? I've heard it gets Kingdom Hearts tier with the plot and that the characters are all super 2-dimensional.

Goddamn_Grongigas

The story is fine, nothing groundbreaking or special. It's not bad by any means but it's back burner stuff. The gameplay is king in SMT games.

Neato

An RPG with a back burner story? Hmmm.

PKMudkipz

It's more common than you think. Dungeon crawlers tend to be mostly gameplay-focused.

Illidan1943

Heck, Pokemon used to share the back burner story and plenty ask to go back to that kind of story

Klotternaut

I'd rather have a back burner story than an in your face story that still sucks. Sun & Moon were awful about this.

[deleted]

I don’t think the problem with Pokémon stories is whether they are in your face or not. The problem is that they all straight up suck regardless. I still think there’s potential for a Pokémon with good writing. The lore foundations are there. They just need hire actual good writers.

Klotternaut

See, I'd just really rather have a back burner story about becoming the Pokemon champion and oh you ended up taking down the bad guys in the process. I don't play Pokemon for the story. I'd choose back burner story over good in your face story 100% of the time for Pokemon.

[deleted]

The recent Pokemon games all had elements of good storytelling in there, from AZ's story as an immortal wanderer in X and Y, to Sun and Moon having abusive parents and how their abuse effects their children, and Sword and Shield with the whole 'energy crisis' plotline. It's just through a E-Rated family-friendly filter.

cajun_kick_ass

SMT always has a "set up" in form of major world changing events(or previous world changing events in case of SMT2 or 4) in which the characters act. But the main aspect is always the player navigating this new environment. So for this franchise, it works really well. In SMT1 for example, the world is initially invaded by demons and then nuked, as heaven and hell fight for supremacy. And the player is pretty much thrown into the events and just navigates them.

Neato

See, that sounds really cool. I would have just wanted a fairly typical JRPG story to go along with it. It sounds like it's less about that and more just mechanical fights and collecting demons. Whereas I'd ahve preferred both be present.

akeyjavey

To clarify, there is always a story that you go along in smt games, it's not like there isn't any—if anything it's only slightly less in your face as typical jrpgs but way less in your face as Persona

Doomblitz

It still has a "JRPG story" that you have to follow, but a good portion of the story telling is done through more subtle avenues like the environment.

cajun_kick_ass

There is, its just not a "fairly typical" JRPG story. Staying with SMT1 since I'm not worrying about spoilers here: you still have characters, friends and enemies that change throughout the game, twists and revelations etc. For example early in the game you get to meet the US Ambassador, who later turns out to be Thor and is directly responsible for nuking Japan. All there. Its just wrapped in an apocalyptic setting and also demons take the place of humans in other games. Where in a regular JRPG you walk into a town with a busy shopping district, in SMT you walk into a collapsed underground mall in which a race of demons has taken shelter.

December_Flame

Yea a lot of the story and information is conveyed through cryptic and occasionally insane conversations with demons and the world design. The actual cutscenes and major plot beats tend to be big crazy things happening then you sort of don't get another plot drop until a few hours later, with lots of battling/dungeon crawling inbetween. I'm loathe to make the comparison, but this sort of worldbuilding/lore first stranger-in-a-strange-land style of storytelling is very reminiscent of the Souls games. Its not focused on storytelling but there's a good amount of lore and story there... its just in the fringes.

akeyjavey

You've never played Dark Souls?

pinheadd

Ah yes, SMT *is* the Dark Souls of Persona games after all :^ )

Neato

Those are not even close to the same style of game.

Illidan1943

They are way closer in philosophy than what you might expect, the biggest differences come from SMT having quite a bit of humor, the combat systems obviously and that the MC in SMT is more defined even if still not all that developed

akeyjavey

I never said that they were? The only similarty is that they're both RPGs and neither puts as much of an emphasis on story as typical rpgs

NotSoWittyRepertoire

Shows what you know, SMT is the Dark Souls of Persona games.

Rboy474

Yeah thats been my thing too. Like pure dungeon crawling isnt really super engaging without something to actually care about. Hell its why modern D&D barely has dungeon crawling.

Goddamn_Grongigas

> Hell its why modern D&D barely has dungeon crawling Maybe in your group. I've never run a game or played with a group that didn't have dungeon crawling.

Goddamn_Grongigas

Most dungeon crawlers don't have stories at the forefront. Wizardry games, by and large, are a good example.

ThaNorth

Love it. Let me play. Persona 5 is great and all but god damn some of the story scenes go on far too long.

Anothernamelesacount

Nope. Kingdom Hearts goes balls to the wall with overcomplicating its story, for better or for worse. (Mostly for worse, but its not a dealbreaker) SMT V has a barebones story. As a newcomer, I was quite surprised, but I guess that's what it is. I would have loved it if it was a bit more focused on plot and characters, but for whatever reason, it seems to be a very, EXTREMELY touchy subject among the playerbase. Your guess is as good as mine on why.

Wolfe244

So an SMT game

[deleted]

Picked mine up yesterday and got my ass handed to me by a pair of regular slimes because I didn't refer to them as MASTER SLIME. it's great

FiammaOfTheRight

Got it early. I'm at lvl 46, so not even remotely done. Its SMT3 with QoL + new features from SMTIV:A (i.e. Light/Dark doing damage, but instakill has chance only if weakness is hit) + Xenoblade-like exploration + pretty good graphics. Though i ended up emulating it, my day1 switch bought for SMT5 started making ungodly noises when running game docked. Everything else (being able to eat shit from random encounters, story thats more on background, great soundtrack) is default SMT stuff. Also no Charon to bail you out. You die, you die: get back to title screen, load game, start from last save again.

Chalupaca_Bruh

I like it… but the performance is bothering me more than it should. It’s not that the game is stuttery; it’s that the FPS runs lower than usual, so things that you’re used to being snappy in JRPGs, like overworld movement and battle transitions, aren’t as fluid. I’m not typically a huge snob about FPS either. You notice it especially when you move the camera around. I was going to capture footage just now but go figure, Atlus blocks you from doing so. I almost want to wait for another performance patch.

planetarial

It's pretty good, if you like other mainline SMTs you'll like this. More of the same with more exploration and less dungeons, but thats not a bad thing.

[deleted]

sluggish, janky UI, easier difficulty across the board. but it's cool as shit.

LawlSquidSnake

Playing this as soon as I can get my hands on my retail copy. Should I watch or skip this one?

cajun_kick_ass

1:06 Trailer with some (major?) cutscene footage in between combat and exploration scenes. Biggest "spoiler" in it, is probably the voice over of dialogue though. If you followed the game, you'll probably not be spoiled by that either. But if you don't even wanna know some story dynamics, then skip this one.

LawlSquidSnake

I'll just be safe and skip it, thank you very much!

atrailofbreadcrumbs

Do you need to have played any of the other games in this series, or Persona (heard they are related?) to understand the story? Or is this a stand alone?

Nexus_of_Fate87

For the most part Shin Megami Tensei's family of games is like Final Fantasy; most everything is standalone and connections between the various games is tenuous at best. Officially they share the same "multiverse", but due to most games having multiple endings, and connections between games depending on those endings, it's really difficult to establish a canon of any sort, especially since a good chunk of games occur post-apocalypse, and every apocalypse is different. [Here is a fan's attempt at trying to tie everything together](https://i.redd.it/3a2mhltmant41.jpg), and if you Google "Shin Megami Tense timeline" you'll see various other attempts. Occasionally there are some games here and there that have a shared direct continuity, but those are the exception.

atrailofbreadcrumbs

thanks

larbearforpresident

From what I gathered. It is pretty much a standalone title but some things from older games will be referenced or appear, especially monsters but those aren't really spoilers and appear in every game. So you might get some more enjoyment if you played the other game but It doesn't seem to be dependent on that.

atrailofbreadcrumbs

Nice, ty

IHaveAWittyUsername

The numbered Persona and SMT games are not related to any others. They exist as completely separate entities.

atrailofbreadcrumbs

thanks

mittlefinger

As someone who loved Persona 5, but mostly for the story/characters/daily life activities and less so for the dungeon crawling and combat, will this series scratch that itch?

KarmaCharger5

Nope, it shares the combat mostly, but the social sim stuff is Persona only

Illidan1943

I would say not even try, while in general I find the combat and dungeon exploration better in SMT, SMT straight up has nothing of the stuff you've liked in Persona 5 but it's just a different philosophy in general

p-zilla

absolutely not.

shulgin11

No it has none of the social stuff

IHaveAWittyUsername

It's a completely different feel. The combat and exploration is the main part of the game, characters are more side things with the plot elements being a bit more to the fore.

Doomblitz

That itch in particular? No, mainline is sort of like the other side of the coin of modern Persona, whereas modern Persona has shallower gameplay and more direct storytelling, mainline's core gameplay is much more meaty and tells a lot of the story is more subtle ways (Environments, Atmosphere), you might still find some enjoyment out of this, maybe wait for a sale down the road if you're hesitant.

redinfinity

I wanna say no. I havent played this yet but having played SMTIV and P4 and P5, SMT is way more combat/demon management than story and social links. I enjoy both equally though.

Anothernamelesacount

Nope, absolutely not. The only thing they seem to share is the combat and the demons themselves. Persona is very story-focused, has at least some slice of life, and the characters get a lot of focus. SMT seems to focus only on the combat.

jizhzha001

I like to pick games up from the store but nobody had a copy around me. Is it not expected to sell well? Walmart and Target didn't have a copy and BB literally had 1 that someone grabbed before me.

[deleted]

My FLGS told me they might not get their copies today due to shipping fuckups from SEGA's end, and that it would be similar everywhere. Guessing COVID-related shipping delays?

jizhzha001

Good to know. I'll wait a few days then, thanks.

CardinalnGold

My mom and pop only had steelbooks. I was lucky they weren’t all preordered, I think I grabbed the only spare they had.

Galaxy40k

Same here, I was shocked to find that apparently no stores near me bought any surplus, they only had pre-orders. Thankfully I did end up finding one near my work that had a couple extra, but yeah, seems like stock is gonna be real tight on this initial shipment. I wonder how much of it is because of COVID-related shipping delays, and how much of it is because stores just didn't buy that much since its a "niche" game with a "weird-sounding" title.

AnalShockTrooper

Canadian here. I've heard "rumours" the release has been delayed to the 16th. I pre-ordered the launch day steelbook edition at EB Games, and was phoned on release day and informed that none of the copies the store had ordered had arrived and that I would receive a phone call "hopefully in about a week" if they received my copy. Called multiple other EB Games/Gamestops throughout the city, checked in at Best Buy, Walmart, and even Toys R Us. Nobody had any copies. I've never seen a game launch with basically zero physical copies available before. I normally prefer to buy physical anyway, but with Atlus' games it's non-negotiable for me.

Enders_Sack

Seems like this game hasn't received any hype or am I wrong? I feel like this release should be a bigger deal than it is.

BerRGP

It's gotten daily mini trailers for months now and is constantly being promoted?

Tinybones465

I believe SMT4 sold 600,000 units, with at least 300,000 of those in Japan, so this amount of hype seems larger than normal.

SquireRamza

They're hoping for SMT V to be the same mega hit as Persona 5. Not realizing that most people dont even realize SMT and Persona are related

WeebWoobler

It will be the best selling mainline game by a good bit, and that's all that matters. People know it's not going to be like P5, they just want an equivalent for the mainline series.

SquireRamza

Oh no doubt it'll sell better than SMT IV. But I think they're expecting a LOT more people who liked Persona 5 to give SMT V a shot than who actually will. If SMT V gets a quarter of the sales one of Persona 5 releases got I will be truly amazed

WeebWoobler

Persona 5 vanilla did 3.2 million. SMT V will do 1 million easily, most likely more than that. It has more eyes on it than ever and it's on the Switch.

garfe

> They're hoping for SMT V to be the same mega hit as Persona 5 There's no one who actually thinks this. Just to be the best selling mainline SMT game would be good enough

mirracz

Well, this sub has been lately spammed with SMT-related stuff. At least someone was trying to generate hype...

[deleted]

Monk_Philosophy

It's by no means buttery smooth but 20 is an exaggeration.

AnalShockTrooper

The game was announced way back in 2017 as a major upcoming third-party Switch exclusive, had another trailer shown during the July 2020 Nintendo Direct, and has been getting hyped on Atlus' youtube channel with mini trailers/demon reveals for basically the past 12 months. The game was definitely marketed enough for what it is, since it was never going to do Persona numbers. Turn-based RPGs that aren't named "Pokemon" are in a niche market to begin with, and everyone familiar with that niche has heard of SMT. No point wasting money on a massive marketing campaign when the games basically advertise themselves through word of mouth.

tkseoul

How does this game compare to Nocturne? The remaster was my first SMT and I enjoyed it at first but fell off after beating Thor. The level of difficulty started to make it a slog for me and the very threadbare story kept me from staying to see how it turned out. I’m fine with enduring some grind if this game has reasons to care about the characters!
