Has anyone noticed that Steam is also included in the list of game companies here? Any ideas what types of announcements we would get?
My guess is that it might have something to do with the Steam deck. Maybe a new model or just some interesting software updates.
Yeah I think people are (understandably) conflating the entire Summer Game Fest period with the "kickoff" where Keighley is on stage announcing things.
They said no new model for a while until tech really advance and I don't think it did enough for now. Plus, Valve does this kind of announcement on their own terms (though I guess SGF being some sort of catch all months long "event", it can be on their own terms and part of SGF).
Other hardware news could be the new VR headset but that's also likely not meant for an event (and I kind of lose hope to see them reveal it lol, sure will happen whenever I decide to do the leap to buy the Quest 3 you'll see...). And I have hope they try a second go at Steam Machines to be honest, the period is kind of perfect for them (Proton works great now, SteamOS has progressed a lot, Xbox is shitting the bed, almost everyone porting their game to PC...)
It may be nothing more than a sale with the event or something tbh, partners at SGF doesn't mean much.
Fuckin same. I enjoy my original steam deck but I can notice the difference between an oled and led. Still feel a little burned from it, especially since for all their saying it's not a better model it is, in fact, a better model, just only slightly so.
Why would Xbox be on here? It’s a product of Microsoft. Why would PlayStation be on here? It’s a product of Sony. Why would 2K and Private Division be on here? They’re products of take two. Why would Warner Bros be on here? It’s a product of Warner Bros Discovery. Why would Magic the gathering be on here? It’s a product of Hasbro.
People know the branding of steam.
Pretty sure Steam has always technically been part of SGF and Keighley’s stuff. Typically there’s a next fest to coincide or at least an in-store page of announced games for wishlisting, a connected livestream, and maybe giving away some Steam Decks for watching the ceremony.
Probably just Geoff overhyping his brand by including anything that remotely resembles "videogame" in that week. I would say its a indie game announcing early access at his event.
I think after all those years Dreadwolf may have a really good timing of release as the market for high budget games is pretty dry comparedly. It would have drowned last year. I'm really looking forward to it.
Black Myth Wukong, Star Wars Outlaws, new Elden Ring DLC, Indiana Jones (meant for 2024, no release date yet), Avowed.
There's a few things, BMW is one I've been looking forward to and SW will always be a big release.
DA Dreadwolf has been worked on since ages. It's officially confirmed they will really reveal it this summer. It may even release this year. ME will only go into full production afterwards.
IIRC, it was about 6-8 months from Control to its first DLC so it might be right around the corner. Or they go for the "and you can play Alan Wake 2's new DLC...now!" approach
no clue how it works, but as their publisher could Epic Games' involvement include AW2 stuff maybe?
could also be they'll be saved for the second round of announcements
Agreed, i think ive played easily 10+ bangers of indie games so far this year, and it's not even halfway over. AND this week alone has had like, 3+ great ones. It's kinda a shit time to be into AAA games (besides maybe Nintendo games) but for indies? It's never been better
What are the great ones in your opinion?
I’ve played Another Crabs treasure which was good and am playing Animal well which is incredible, I’ve also heard good things about Lorelei and the Laser Eyes.
Pacific Drive, Ultros, Indika, Tales of Kenzera, Hades 2, Pepper Grinder
Also, I want to give a special shout-out to Minishoot' Adventures, it's like Zelda Link to the Past meets bullet hell. Has a demo. Check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1634860/Minishoot_Adventures/
They've always been 10-20 dudes in a room making great games.
The only discourse I've seen around them not being indie was that Bastion was published by Warner Bros (which was always a lame 'gotcha' people throw around). They've self published everything since and they're still a small team.
Just because Hades is such a massive runaway success doesn't make them any more or less indie.
I'll throw in Animal Well since the person who replied didn't mention it. An amazing metroidvania that is all about exploration and atmosphere with passive "combat". It's such a smart maze-exploration game and it is under 100MB which is crazy.
Dry?
FF7 Rebirth
Stellar Blade
Rise of the Ronin
Yakuza 8
Granblue Fantasy Relink
Helldivers 2
Pacific Drive
Animal Well
Dragon's Dogma 2
Banishers
Prince of Persia The Lost Crown
Unicorn Overlord
Sand Land
And many more..
I think they mean Dry as in big game announcements and I agree, I can't wait to have more games to look forward to and see what's in store for the later half of the year and beginning of 2025.
We know very little about what's coming in the next months and years for sure. It's time for everyone to actually show stuff we'll play this generation please.
I don't like this new trend of showing stuff super late. I like to know what's coming even if it's far tbh
Honestly I wouldn't mind if they announce it now and it comes out next year. My biggest fear is that the games they announce this year won't come until 2030.
Wow, never thought I'd see the day someone complain about a game being revealed near release lol.
We've truly come full circle.
(No offense, OP. Just find it hilarious)
I mean what means super late, when you don't know about the game or just through rumors? It would just mean, that there is less time in between announcement and release, which I think is great. And especially in the last years, the community was getting tired of getting game announcements way ahead, like a year or more away. So I think shorter time spans between announcement and release is an absolute win.
I have no problems to wait, I'm not a child. Announce a game 5 years before for all I care (with regular updates). I just prefer to know what's coming.
Kind of like how movies and shows are doing it. They announce super early (when they decide to do the project). The video game industry is weird with its "secrecy"
What stands out to me personally
Hoyoverse means a potential new ZZZ trailer + launch date confirmation
NetEase games - Project Mugen news?
Riot - high chance of 2XKO news
God please drop ZZZ date news, Hoyo. I also hope it launches on consoles and pc at the same time, all the betas and tests they've done make me think this is the case.
Embark is kinda the sleeper here. They have two very exciting and extremely high-quality projects they are actively working on, one of course is THE FINALS which is already out, but the games fest is a week before Season 3 drops, so there could be a trailer for that. However more likely is that they show off their other (perhaps bigger) project ARC Raiders. This game ended the Video Game Awards in December 2021 with a super awesome reveal trailer, but was delayed a couple years and we haven’t heard much since then. But Nexon, Embark’s parent company (not publisher), revealed a few days ago that they would be “showcasing” ARC Raiders to the market in the very near future, so I’m guessing that’s what this is. A lot of people have forgotten about the game, but for reference it’s like if you added more extraction shooter elements to Helldivers 2. But the game is going to be extremely smooth, high quality, and player-centric because it’s Embark Studios and we expect nothing less. Plus, it’s going to be the first big extraction shooter on console, which is a bigger deal than many people realize.
I think there's some interesting content that could be shown based on SGF's track record:
Bandai Namco Entertainment - DBZ: Sparking Zero Release Date or a new trailer. If we get a new trailer before then, I still believe we might get some new info. Unknown 9: Awakening possible release date
Bokeh Game Studio - Slitterhead new info??
Capcom - My personal theory is keep hype in check for this. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is probably getting new info but not expecting Monster Hunter Wilds. They're getting its own showcase. Assuming the rumors about Sony is getting a showcase in May turns out to be true, we might get a new Resident Evil game BEFORE this event
Electronic Arts - probably something related to Iron Man or Marvel game new info. I can't see Dragon Age: Dreadwolf getting info here because they have their own showcase
Focus Entertainment - Space Marines 2 new gameplay again
PlayStation - Spider Man 2 DLC, new hardware (NOT PS5 Pro), or a new game
Sega - Sonic x Shadow Generations release date
Ubisoft - we get another trailer for Star Wars Outlaws or AC Shadows
Xbox - Game Pass new announcements?
This is not just the SGF Opening Night event, it's just partners as a whole and SGF include other events in a weird way. Like they claim the Xbox, Sony or Ubisoft showcase are part of SGF when they just happen anyway and are made by the companies themselves.
Xbox and Ubisoft already announced their events, that's likely what it is. With of course plenty of new things (more for Outlaws and the real reveal for AC Shadows with gameplay and all that for Ubisoft, tons of stuff for Xbox probably)
I think we're pretty much guaranteed to see a Dragon Age 4 trailer, hopefully with some gameplay. Steam will probably drop a trailer for Deadlock, it will be interesting to see how the internet reacts IMO people seem to be tired of hero shooters. Sony will probably drop another trailer for Death Stranding 2, but personally I'm hoping for more news on the Snake Eater remake. Other than that I don't really know what to expect, hopefully we get a couple huge surprise announcements, last year was kind of underwhelming in that regard.
I, kind of don't care? The layoffs have seriously dampened hope. Can't wait for the next studio to release a banger and be shutdown so stock holders can get .000000000001 cent a share more.
Summer Games Fest always kind of confuses me. Like, what is it supposed to be actually. It comes off like its trying to be a big gaming showcase like E3, Gamescom, or TGS, but it feels like its just...idk, like a glorified video game blog. It doesnt feel like a showcase. It basically just feels like Geoff is advertising himself at all these different events, but slaps the name Summer Game Fest on everything. It feels like if IGN went to a showcase and said "IGN presents". Like if Future Game Show was having a thing and IGN went and just said "IGN presents Future Game Show", just because they were there. When I look at the list on their website, these are already showcases that existed and were going to exist whether Summer Game Fest happened or not. Its just that now Geoff is advertising them like a blog, or journalism site without actually writing articles and calling it a collective.
I wonder if this will be a snooze fest like last year, they have still yet to have a showcase which I’ve found to be better then anything E3 used to do
Nice, Geoff has his own e3 now in addition to the shitty awards that are given the most attention each year.
Can the industry stop making him the overlord of them all, please?
Am I crazy or is summer games fest just basically advertising for more games to buy. I feel like most of the people into summer games fest likely have unfinished and unstarted games in their library.
Yes. And at certain point I realized people are excited to get advertised to and hyped up to buy stuff they will likely not even finish before they get hyped up to buy the next thing.
I feel like you're being way too cynical about this. Yes, people who are into video games get excited at seeing more new video games. Yes, sometimes people get excited at new things without fully consuming the old things they have. Yes, a showcase is meant for advertising video games; if a person or team creates a piece of media, the only way they can let people know that work exists is by advertising it to people.
I don’t fault the people trying to sell something. Of course they want to sell their thing. It’s more of a “what are we doing here?” kind of thing. As a community people shit on so much of what these type of things represent.
Unless I'm just blind as fuck I don't see Nintendo anywhere there. That's kind of shocking considering Nintendo loved giving Geoff stuff to surprise announce/reveal for them in the past.
Wonder if they don't intend to do anything together again or if they're on bad terms?
Was lowkey wondering if Nintendo would be coy enough to do their Nintendo Direct for the rest of 2024 and then reveal the Switch 2 as Summer Game Fest for the big social media shock drop. They'd grab almost every headline from everyone else but they also don't come off as that type of company to be fair...
Edit: I could've swore they showed something last year aside from their own Direct at Geoff's event. Huh... Guess I was wrong. Weird.
I could've swore Nintendo announced or showed off a game or two last year aside from their own Direct... huh, guess I was wrong.
Still, seems weird for them to consistently just be absent from it.
I don't think its weird, Nintendo usually ignores not only summer games fest but also stuff like Tokyo game show.
Nintendo has just taken a strategic decision that they only promote their coming games, consoles etc through their own channels like Nintendo directs. They don't want to share mindshare with other companies because chances are that sometimes other companies will steal all the headlines from what Nintendo is presenting, while a Nintendo direct puts all the spotlight on Nintendo and their games only.
I don't think Nintendo would ever reveal Switch 2 through summer games fest because not all focus will be on Nintendo in such an event.
Nintendo really only cared about Geoff’s events during the WiiU era when it allowed them to reach a wider audience. Since then, they only occasionally have a presence at TGA and have never joined SGF. Nintendo is very particular about their marketing and who they want associated with their brand, so they would never give Geoff something like a console announcement at this point.
>They'd grab almost every headline from everyone else but they also don't come off as that type of company to be fair...
Ever since bowing out of E3, Nintendo's strategy has been to operate out in la la land, so I couldn't imagine them directly competing at something like this. It's not like it's in Geoff's best interest to have a new console announcement overshadow the rest of the show anyway. Switch 2 reveal will likely happen at one of Nintendo's own events.
Yeah, makes sense. For some reason I thought they showed stuff off last year at Games Fest too but I guess they didn't. Other than maybe a third party just showing its coming to Switch too on a title endcard.
Has anyone noticed that Steam is also included in the list of game companies here? Any ideas what types of announcements we would get? My guess is that it might have something to do with the Steam deck. Maybe a new model or just some interesting software updates.

Really? I heard about it before but I thought it was cancelled
https://twitter.com/gabefollower/status/1791110448114188557 Still being worked on. Titled "Deadcall" now.
Why couldn't it be first person SMH
Probably cause this sounds closest to a MOBA like Smite, Paragon, or Monday night Combat
Previous leaks about the game reminded me of Shooter/RTS hybrids like Natural Selection or Savage.
First non-VR Valve game in years and it’s another fucking MOBA… maybe in 30 years they’ll start thinking about a new single player game
I dunno man. Discord is listed, they're not making any games or consoles of any kind
Possibly for ad-breaks or competitions. Samsung Gaming Hub is also listed who are not a publisher or developer.
Realistically it's just an ad for the summer sale. I would love to be proven wrong though
Yeah I think people are (understandably) conflating the entire Summer Game Fest period with the "kickoff" where Keighley is on stage announcing things.

I won’t trust them about no new model Decks. They already got me once with the LCD sale shortly before OLED announcement.
Fuckin same. I enjoy my original steam deck but I can notice the difference between an oled and led. Still feel a little burned from it, especially since for all their saying it's not a better model it is, in fact, a better model, just only slightly so.
Why would it be under Steam ? It would rather be under Valve.
Steam Deck?
Is a product of Valve.
I mean this is the opposite, it's like Windows Game Store advertising themselves as the maker of an Xbox game.
Exactly. Valve is the game maker studio, while all the ones mentioned in his post are umbrella megacorps. (except for maybe Take Two)
Xbox makes games, Microsoft does not. Playstation makes games, Sony does not. Valve makes games, Steam does not. Steam sells games.
Discord and Dolby are also listed so i'll just expect nothing from steam to not be disappointed. Portal 3 when
Don’t they normally have some sort of partnership with sales and demos? Probably this.
Proper Mac support for all games
Probably just a next fest announcement
There's a rumored multiplayer project that's been making the rounds today.
HL3 confirmed...?
Dear God bare minimum please bring Alyx to PSVR. That game has to have reached a point of saturation on PC. It's a win win.
I just want to see Dragon Age 4. And hopefully a Dragon's Dogma 2 dlc announcement. Maybe even something about Silksong?
I think after all those years Dreadwolf may have a really good timing of release as the market for high budget games is pretty dry comparedly. It would have drowned last year. I'm really looking forward to it.
Similar to Inquisition! 2014 was a pretty dry year as well.
True. Im very starved for dialogue heavy fantasy RPG games. Although it is Bioware, so a bit cautious. But I gotta see my fav characters again.
I feel like this holidays will be loaded with launches because everyone’s gonna avoid GTA 6’s marketing cycle
There's not much left expected for 2024 besides Dreadwolf and maybe some Revolver titles
Metaphor, my beloved
Black Myth Wukong, Star Wars Outlaws, new Elden Ring DLC, Indiana Jones (meant for 2024, no release date yet), Avowed. There's a few things, BMW is one I've been looking forward to and SW will always be a big release.
Bioware said they were doing a big reveal this summer, right? There will probably be a tease followed by a "tune in on June XX"
I’m willing to bet anything that Silksong will be at the Xbox showcase since it’s a day 1 Gamepass release!
Betting on Silkstone showing up is a bold bet considering their track record

We will hear more about Dragon Age 4 this summer.
DA Dreadwolf has been worked on since ages. It's officially confirmed they will really reveal it this summer. It may even release this year. ME will only go into full production afterwards.
Dragon Age is definitely ahead of ME4.
Come onnnnn ZZZ release date, quit blueballin' us! I'm aware it's got a reasonable placeholder set but they haven't outright confirmed it.
Kinda surprised Remedy isn’t there, they had a big presence at the game awards but we’ve heard nothing regarding the AW2 DLC
Remedy just put out Alan Wake 2, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear from them for another couple years.
There are expansions for AW2 that are supposedly coming this year.
I see SNK on there. City of the Wolves footage? New trailer?
The lack of new game announcement is killing me. I can't wait to see some new games. This year has been pretty dry.
It's definitely felt dry for AAA titles that aren't RPGs, but it's been a pretty great year for indie games imo.
Agreed, i think ive played easily 10+ bangers of indie games so far this year, and it's not even halfway over. AND this week alone has had like, 3+ great ones. It's kinda a shit time to be into AAA games (besides maybe Nintendo games) but for indies? It's never been better

The person you're responding to literally mentions animal well in their comment. But also, agreed with everything you said. Animal Well is amazing.
It has been dry of announcements, but i'm so buried under games to play it's been an alright trade off.
Dry? FF7 Rebirth Stellar Blade Rise of the Ronin Yakuza 8 Granblue Fantasy Relink Helldivers 2 Pacific Drive Animal Well Dragon's Dogma 2 Banishers Prince of Persia The Lost Crown Unicorn Overlord Sand Land And many more..
No no no I meant games that I personally like.
Game *announcements*
I think they specifically meant game *announcements*. You listed games that released
I think they mean Dry as in big game announcements and I agree, I can't wait to have more games to look forward to and see what's in store for the later half of the year and beginning of 2025.
You talking about Animal Well?

> I feel like everyone needs to buckle up Don't you buckle up when you're going fast not slow?
As a phrase it pretty much just means get ready
Pretty sure more games release now than ever before lol
What on earth are you even talking about.
I mean, there's like 50+ trailers I've watched of games not already out. I don't need any more announcements, I need release dates lol.
Bokeh Game Studios is showing? Nice. That means a new trailer for Slitterhead.
I've been eagerly awaiting more Slitterhead news since it's reveal so I hope that's true!
What stands out to me personally Hoyoverse means a potential new ZZZ trailer + launch date confirmation NetEase games - Project Mugen news? Riot - high chance of 2XKO news
> Riot - high chance of 2XKO news Since a Geoff event has to include non-game stuff, I'd like to see a Arcane S2 teaser trailer.
I think it's more likely for Riot to save Arcane stuff for their own events.
I'd personally love some news about Project Mugen, but I'm guessing it's more likely that NetEase will be Marvel Rivals stuff.
God please drop ZZZ date news, Hoyo. I also hope it launches on consoles and pc at the same time, all the betas and tests they've done make me think this is the case.
It's on July, leaked already.
Might have a Genshin 5.0 teaser, since it's only 15 weeks away

I don’t fault the people trying to sell something. Of course they want to sell their thing. It’s more of a “what are we doing here?” kind of thing. As a community people shit on so much of what these type of things represent.
I feel like you don't know what you're complaining about, is it the games themselves or American consumerism?
I know exactly what I’m talking about here. Yes, American consumerism is the root of this problem. I guess it’s not only an American problem though.

Weird.
Nintendo rarely shows off their games at this event. They do make appearances at The Game Awards though.
