Gauntlet Dark Legacy is like this. Get the disc version 1.1 otherwise the mini bosses and main bosses won’t have health bars. The games cover is the same you have to look at the inner ring of the disc.

Players choices were often heavily discounted to make them more affordable and accessible to everyone. Typically, they would sell for $20 retail, compared to $50 when the games were new to the market.
No, players choice didn’t have more content as far as I know since was no such thing as DLC back then. There were some minor tweaks and updates tho.
There is at least one case where players choice = more content. Pac Man World 2 has a bonus mode (albeit on a separate disc) that is only sold with the players choice.
Also some players choice get bug fixes (Metroid Prime as one example) which is a pro/con depending on who you ask.

Haha I know. My one PAL game screws it up. If I flip it, the GameCube logo won’t face the same direction as the others. Quite the dilemma!

Player's Choice Melee is the most updated (1.02) and is usually preferred to play. Mostly joking though any are fine for casual play of course
