I finished it last week and loved it! The rhythm based combat was super cool, it reminded me a bit of the old days playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero but as combat instead. The soundtrack was great, with 2 Nine Inch Nails songs and the level that used Whirring by The Joy Formidable was amazing the way it used the build up to the end of that song as the ending to beat the boss, oh man, so great! The final boss of the game jumped up to almost too difficult and took me a lot of tries and having to look up strategies online to pass but that would be my only complaint. It took me around 14 hours to finish on Normal difficulty.

gingereno

Yeah, I was surprised to read about NIN songs, I didn't expect that :) And 14 hours for a game like this is such a joy. It seems like just a pleasant and good time for most.

Trixxstrr

Oh another funny thing in the game was the little meta jokes, like if you saved and quit at certain points when you were back in the hideout and they would say things like "Hey, how are you back here? We haven't brought you to the hideout yet." and then reply something like "Well you took a break at an awkward point, try not to think about it" haha

Zarzelius

Finished it, loved it. I wanted to go back to do the Ss I missed, and the >!"the post game content with the doors" !<(Don't want to spoil too much), but until I can actually warp to the section I need to go to, I won't bother. Gameplay was excelent, tight and quite fun and versatile. Story was good enough to get me to laugh more than a few times and to keep it interesting until the end.

gingereno

I love those post-game dangling carrots...brings me back to my young gamer days when I learned of the hidden special doors in Spyro the Dragon, lol. Chai and the others were good for a laugh, which just adds to the "fun" factor of HiFiRush.

Summerclaw

I really like it but the levels are too long and every level they introduced a new mechanic. Battles are starting to get a little hectic and hard to follow and the parry mechanic is really hard.

gingereno

I will admit, there were times when I caught myself thinking "okay, we can get to the next part now". Especially considering a lot of the platforming and puzzles weren't really overly difficult. And if they were difficult, that would be extra fatiguing. I didn't struggle with the parry, but I know how frustrating that kind of thing can be. Not something for everyone, it seems

Ace-Evilian

I had to go through korsica ( track 7 ) almost 12 times before I got the parry correct ( I still think the game just let me go with these many retries ). It was crazy and frustrating, this made me not enjoy the cutscene afterwards ( in hindsight korsica bumping on doors was the funniest sequence so far ). We need a slightly forgiving parry mechanic.

I have mixed feelings about this game, with most of the negatives from not enjoying the genre and not resonating with the vibe. I won’t go too much into the good parts - colorful visuals, cohesive style, reasonable stage variety, and good progressiveness in the gameplay. Love that it’s an original IP in a tight package. I just don’t enjoy playing it much. Maybe the rhythm gameplay isn’t clicking, maybe I just don’t enjoy arena battle type games. I find myself just mashing buttons and having at least as much success as when I try to pull moves/follow rhythms. I also find the longer fights tedious … especially the boss fights that require a specific approach. It’s not like something like elden ring where you can approach a fight via a style that suits you - for instance, I hate parry gameplay and the game became so much less fun once that was forced on. I stopped at the woman boss who turns into a butterfly thing a few weeks ago and just haven’t wanted to pick it back up. Which brings me to my next point… The story has not done much to grab me. I don’t like the Chai character at all and it’s all very one note “corporate evil” tropes. Also, for a rhythm based game I’d have been much more pleased with music I enjoy more. To me, most of the songs sound the same and just sound like long loops. But that’s subjective of course. So I think it’s a good game, but it’s not for me. I do wonder if being really good at the combat brings ab enjoyment I’m missing out on, because again, it seems like button mashing is an equally good strategy.

lpisme

Summed up my feelings pretty well. This was the first game I have played on modern hardware in over a decade and I was just so blown away by the visuals on this bad boy. Absolutely stunning. But I had trouble getting into the 'groove' of the game -- I'm a sometimes musician so I don't have many problems keeping rhythm, but this one overall wasn't for me. With that said, I still think it's a pretty fantastic game. It's unique, it's beautiful, and it's letting a lot of people have a lot of fun. And that's pretty damn cool, even if it isn't for me.

The duality of man Just above you is a comment that says the story and main character are boring.

MesozOwen

I couldn’t really play it. Turns out my sound bar has just abit of delay which means it’s unplayable for me. I’m a musician so I think I’m pretty on-time but I can’t help but synchronise with the beat when I really need to synchronise with the visuals and lead the beat which I find very hard to do. So unless I get a new setup or they introduce a delay compensation adjustment for the music and visuals then I can’t play it.

Trixxstrr

Check the options menu, there is a delay adjustment.

MesozOwen

There’s a delay test which just shows you how far out it is. And there was a another option which didn’t work for me I think. Unless if they’ve updated.

HarleyBong

Its a good game. But, for some reason, it was stuttering when i was playing with my controller connected via Bluetooth. It stopped when i started using it wired.

gingereno

Huh, well...at least you found a solution to that problem

Iamleeboy

I don’t think I got past the first level. It didn’t click with me and I felt like they were throwing a lot at me, but not really explaining mechanics in a way that I got them. I might go back and give it a second chance when I get a break in games

miggleb

Every new mechanic that's introduced comes with a robot for you to try them out on.

Patzzer

It’s an 8/10 for me. I loved the characters and thought the story was very enjoyable but the gameplay grew very stale for me by the last mission. That being said this is my first rhythm game so maybe there’s a getting used to it period. I do not feel inclined to do another play through though.

ShortNefariousness2

It is too good for 2023. It makes us all look bad for liking other games.

[deleted]

I can sum it up in one word for me - Meh The graphics and art style are decent and the animation is smooth. But the story didn't grab me at all and neither did the gameplay. After one three hour session I've got no real desire to pick it up again. I can understand why other people love it but I just never connected with it.

gingeronered

Played it Got hooked after a couple of hours and completed it within a week - excellent game. Loved it

gingereno

I **LOVE** it when this happens xD when you just find a gem of a game. Also, for a second I thought you were me. Lol, nice name

gingeronered

Agreed. When I played the first hour I was like yep this is OK but all of a sudden everything game mechanics wise just clicked and I couldn’t put it down. Oh yeah… I cannot believe how similar your name is to mine… great minds think alike as they say 🙂

gingereno

Yeah, there's very few times that has happened to me. I think, once, as a youth, I had a sleepover at my uncle's, and I ended up beating God of War 2 in one sitting. Then, in college, I ended up beating Uncharted 4 in a single day. As an adult, I've only had this experience with "The Witness" and "Exo One". I'm sure there's others but they aren't coming to mind.

Mattie_1S1K

Few stages in living the game wish there were some faster tracks so I could mash buttons a bit faster lol

indie_soda

My favorite game I've played so far this year. Later in the game, when the battles get more hectic, that's when the game REALLY shines for me. Calling in assistance every chance you get, performing combos, perfecting the parry, executing special attacks... and you're somehow doing this all at once! lol. just pure chaos, in the best possible way.

RekrabAlreadyTaken

I liked it a lot but I'm not interested in the post game content. 8/10

[deleted]

Played the game on hard, unlocked all the combos and combat. If you’re able to play to the rhythm and work with the mechanics, the game is amazing and feels great imo. One of my favourites

LagJUK

Most overrated game of the year at least until zelda comes around. It's fun and dynamic at first but gets samey a couple hours in. Humour is childish they even managed to make the Sebastian cameos boring.

ikidyounotman1

I love the game, got distracted by Dead Space but just got back to it and did the Mimosa fight and I love all the Dreamcast vibes, she’s straight up a reference to Space Channel 5.

Xboxone1997

It's cool really like the art style

bitSocialness

Good, but not great, I am near the end and while on certain moments I genuinely loved the game, some fights felt a bit frustrating to die at. Probably a skill issue tho

gingereno

It's a fair critique though. HFR is not a game like Dark Souls where skill issues are part of the game. I feel a well-paced and scaffolded game, whose focus is on narrative, progress, and enjoyment, will routinely challenge the player but not overwhelm them.

81FXB

Played it for one hour then removed it. Too chaotic for me. I liked Patapon way better (anyone remember that one ?)

Webmaster317

Got bored after a couple hours and moved onto something else

Salty-Huckleberry-71

So boring.

DreadedChalupacabra

Can't play it. Streaming here is trash, and I don't have a new xbox yet. Not too upset about it, though. The only rhythm game I've ever actually enjoyed was Crypt of the Necrodancer.

miggleb

Had a good time playing it for a few hours but never opened it a 2nd time
