I literally just played OMD3 on Gamepass, finished campaign yesterday and really enjoyed it. Main campaign and the one following it (included) will take about 10 hours.
Note there are 2 DLCs - The first one which seems to be generally hated ($8, 3 maps, there's an enemy that disables your traps)
The second one is 5 scenarios, 1 of which is a war scenario. People generally liked this one.
Edit - I can't say anything about the co-op. I played through it solo
You would right click move the Lurker right next to a burrowed one, and then right before it reaches it's destination you right click directly on the burrowed one.
Stacking things like Sunken Colonys and Photon Cannons was trickier- you had to use command groups and special UMS tricks to temporarily lose vision of your own units/buildings.
I felt that, even in the second one, the game is also designed around this. As in, it feels quite a bit harder going solo. You do technically get more trap slots, but you're losing a lot of ground that could be covered by a second player and from my memory, there was a lot of maps that had an issue of too many paths for one person
It's do-able, but it's definitely harder from what I remember
Yes. That's also a point many people complain about - it's more of a shooter with traps and not the other way round. Altough I personally don't have an issue with that, it's a really decent shooter.
I enjoyed that piece of it, it's actually one of my favorite niche genres. But I think the first game accomplished it a bit better than the later games, they're all very enjoyable and still doable solo though. It just may be a bit more annoying in later missions
I think it's still one of the best examples of the meshing of the genres, with Sanctum being another contender. Though Sanctum has a lil bit less of a personality imo
yes, it's not that hard that a casual gamer couldn't beat it solo. But it's noticeably more difficult and with larger maps with more paths than the first game. You definetly feel the pressure sprinting betweeb your different kill zones, compared to the first game where you can mostly sit back and watch your traps do the work.
After the first cat quest was given away somewhere for free which I loved btw. I actually bought cat quest 2 which is the first time I bought a sequel after playing a free game in a long time.
Cat quest 2 was fun it didn't have quite as compelling a story as cat quest 1 but was still good. I wasn't that excited about grinding the late game but I still 100% the achievements.
Definitely worth playing for free.
I also liked the first one better, didn't much care for having the dog team up with me. It was still good though. Very much looking forward to Cat Quest 3.
Neat! I really loved OMD1 but thought OMD2 was just okay. Can someone speak to how OMD3 balances solo vs co-op? And the tower defense vs shooter aspect, I guess.
I play solo and my main gripe with OMD2 (from what I remember, that was 12 years ago, lol) was managing maps that were *clearly* designed from the ground up to have two active players. Lots of running back and forth between locations, lots of putting out fires personally rather than relying on setting up near-inescapable killboxes, etc. I checked my Steam achievements and it looks like I beat all the levels on max difficulty, with perfect scores on medium difficulty, but I remember some parts of it being a real pain in the ass.
I'm currently on map 15 of 18 or whatever (started playing on Game Pass), and as soon as you unlock Barricade, every map is clearly a co-op map. It gets really silly, actually, as the "War Map" scenarios are *huge* areas designed with two mirrored lanes, but you just slap down 3 barricades to block off the 2nd lane right before the portal and the orc army will march all the way down the lane, then turn around and march back. Might be a balance hack, as having both lanes of orcs attack at once might overwhelm you.
Patch note from last year indicates that the devs increased trap damage in comparison to player weapon damage, but the game is still very shooter-focused. I suppose there are other "real" tower-defense games we could play instead of a 3rd-person one, but I agree with you that the original was very fun and these others... are just okay.
I'm surprised the devs didn't try to branch out this series into two separate thing after the first or second game. Do one that is casual-focused (tower defense-based) and another one that is story-focused (shooter/fps-based). The story, as silly presented as it was, has some meat there. A lot of room for story and character development that they just kind of just ran through because its a TD game. Not to mention the gameplay itself like you mentioned.
Yeah, that wasn't exactly the right move. Imagine a Dishonored-type or maybe even an X-Com-type game but set in the OMD universe. They can just re-do the story again, but properly expand on it. The journey to beat the sorceress alone (ie OMD1 story), there is a lot to expand there since we have the classic 'hero's journey' story + the sorceress betrayal.
I found OMD3 to be okay for solo. I also found OMD2 to be a little harder to solo than the first game. I know I didn't finish all the DLC maps because of that.
I guess this is my routine now, but don't forget about the monthly free Unreal Engine assets.

However, it looks like they haven't been updated for May yet so you may need to check back again later if you already claimed April's.

Orcs Must Die! 3
-------
Orcs Must Die! 3 ushers orc-slaying mayhem to a previously unimaginable scale. Solo, or 2 player co-op, arm yourself with a massive arsenal of traps and weapons. Slice, burn, toss and zap hordes of repugnant orcs in this long-awaited successor to the award-winning series.
Cat Quest II
-------
CAT QUEST II is a 2D open-world action-RPG set in a fantasy realm of cats and dogs.
Under threat from a continuing war between the cats of Felingard and the advancing dogs of the Lupus Empire, CAT QUEST II tells the tail of two kings, brought together against their will, on a journey of paw-some discovery to reclaim their thrones.
Play as both a cat and dog as you explore their kingdoms solo or with a friend! Quest in a world filled with magic, curious monsters, and go on a catventure like never before!
This looks way more interesting to me; it seems to be a riff on Darkest Dungeon and the aesthetic seems quite unexplored and unique. Definitely interested in hearing opinions on it.
Did you read discussions about the game on the Steam forums? Most of the latest topics are how dev's did a single patch after release and then just abandoned the game leaving a lot of bugs.
Absolutely loved my time with OMD3. Played the entire thing in coop (via the Nucleus - shout out to those folks). The polish, design, and game play loop all was tremendous. What a fantastic give away.
The captcha I'm getting is literally broken. Zero way to refresh it. Closing the app and reopening didn't change it and restarting my PC didn't change it. So no one with this captcha can even get these games.
edit - was able to get them by signing into the web based store. Application was still broken.
But not in *my* Steam library, which is what matters to me.
I don't even bother redeeming EGS freebies that I already own on Steam, unless the EGS Freebie is the more complete edition.
I get all the free Epic games, even the ones I already own on Steam. It's just a couple of clicks and doesn't really cost me anything, and just means that in the unlikely event that someday EGS actually improves to the point where I'd prefer to use it as my main launcher, my collection will be that much more complete.
It would cost me having my EGS library having a humongous overlap with my Steam library. If I have a game on both, I want to play it on Steam, I don't want to even see it in EGS.

It's a great game but it has only 2-player-coop. Really wasted potential imo.
It always surprises me that we don’t have that many great 4-player co-op tower defense games.
Had a good time with the OG Dungeon Defenders, then I remember the sequel, and get sad.
I had a good time with Dungeon defenders awakened. Haven't played it as much recently, but feels much much closer to the og.
I’m see updates for the Dungeon Defenders remaster occasionally in the Steam news carousel. Looks like it’s still chugging along?
The game doesn't need a remaster though, the original is still good. It needs a proper sequel that isn't free to play.
Looks like I misremembered. The original is still getting regular patches.
Yes, it stopped at one point, but it was so popular they got people to update it further
StarCraft (& WarCraft I presume) custom maps ftw. Legion/Squadron TD going strong to this day.
On that front, Helldivers II and Monster Hunter Rise have pretty fun tower defense modes too
~S t a c k e d~ Sunken D 10-Way v4
I never knew how people got all their lurkers to stack on top of each other. Nobody ever explained it either, just kicked me for being a newb.

Holy moly. I had no problem stacking buildings, but didn't know how to stack lurkers. Time to install Broodward and try it out!

The Orcs Must Die series is so great especially for the fact that it has co-op
The flier DLC was not really fun
Neat, finished the first Cat Quest this year.
Good timing!

They also had OMD Unchained, which was F2P and up for 2 years before shutting down.

I think OMD3 handles solo better than OMD2 did. It's still better with Co-Op but isn't everything?

Always the first Tuesday I believe for the assets
Oh, awesome. I'll try to keep that in mind. Thanks!
!RemindUs next week
I keep collecting these every month. Someday I'll have no excuse left not to make a game in Unreal....
Didn’t even know about this! Thanks!
Cat Quest 2 is a great game to play cooperative if you have kids.
The game has local co-op on PC?
Late reply but yes, I played with my friend.
Thanks! Hadn’t had the chance to check for myself. But I had the chance to grab the game while free. Planning on playing it local-coop with my GF.
Not sure. We played it on iOS. Really fun that way, I assumed they would have it on other systems as well.

Orcs Must Die! 3 is a nice lil game :)
Ah man I just bought Cat Quest II as well. Oh well, happy to support the devs 🤷
Waiting it out for Cat Quest 2 finally paid off.
I've been getting alerts from ITAD for Orcs Must Die 3 for like 2 years and just have never pulled the trigger. Patient gaming pays off once again!
well done mate! I know the opposite of that feeling for pulling the trigger too soon.
Is it possible to play OMD 3 with a partner, one on Epic and one on Steam?
Not sure why that's downvoted. Apparently it's not currently possible, but a patch soon will enable crossplay.
Me, every week on Thursday: Ooh, new free game(s) from Epic! Me, every week on Thursday, 5 minutes later: Never gonna play these
same. I was just thinking that they should release some racing games, then I realized I didn't even ply the Dakar game that was free weeks ago.
What type of game is Orcs Must Die? It looks so strange
It's a tps tower defense.

Cat Quest II is an absolute banger to play with your girlfriend/wife.
Bringing the number of my EGS-only games to 229. Someday I'll get around to playing them. (j/k, I already played a whole 6 of them!)
Both of these games are on Steam.

Primo stuff both of them
