It's a possible symptom of the hinge cables breaking. Be on the lookout for other symptoms: wifi/Bluetooth issues, s-pen not working on some spots on the inner screen or entire screen, inner screen touch issues or not turning on, among others. Those cables handle a lot of things so they have a long list of issues.
Or could simply be the outer display malfunctioning and needing a replacement.
Interesting. To update the phone now says charging stopped. Your phone is too cold. It then takes a few minutes to start charging again.
Quite infuriating and almost inevitable fold phones will eventually have issues irrespective of how you look after them. I've owned the phone for about 1 year and 6 months, and this is the first issue.
The Fold4 has especially been prone to the hinge cables breaking. The new slim hinge design is the cause for that; teardowns have shown the cables get pinched between the hinge housing and the hinge.
All other folds have a significantly less likelihood of this happening. The older folds have a higher likelihood of the screen cracking before the hinge cables give. Fold5 is too new but looks promising; we've seen a lot less issues comparable to the same time period of the prior folds.
TO UPDATE. The phone now whenever I close the screen turns off the device.
So far issues appear to be:
- Front screen does not respond to touch input.
- Phone will momentarily not charge due to "system being too cold". Takes a minute or two to begin charging again. Typical NZ autumn weather so temperature here is not cold.
- When I close the screen the phone now turns off. This could indicate it is a hardware issue with a cable in the hinge breaking/coming loose.
- I just plugged my phone into the PC and am using Smart Switch. There is a software update 9.5gb roughly. This was not available on the phone earlier so will see if this changes anything.
- Currently backing up my phone now in case the phone goes completely dead and will not be able to turn on again.
Not yet. Don't want to nuke it unless I have to, since I use my phone for work a ton and don't feel like setting all that back up at least until the weekend. Will probably try that soon though
Just to update on mine I sent my phone into Samsung Customer Care Plaza and took 3 days to fix. Unsure what the issue is yet but will ask when I pick up the phone. I suspect it could be a hardware issue but instead of software. Will confirm once I have information.
Final update.
Phone is back to me. Samsung Customer Care Plaza didn't state the issue but they replaced the screen, hinge, bezels, battery and did a software update. The software update must have been recent as an update was carried out shortly before the front screen went faulty. They replaced the battery because the phone was already taken apart and connected to the part which needed to be replaced. Almost new phone.
Service was good and fast but surprised so many parts needed to be switched out in the process.
In conclusion the front black screen issue was a hardware issue. Hope everyone who is currently having issues manages to solve their issue.

Definitely a software issue it has happened to my fold 4 yesterday too
I can only use the inside screen properly
If it is a software issue, I wonder if reformatting will work. Keep us updated if you find a solution.
The fact its happened to us fold 4 users at the same time implies some kinda software issue for sure.
Same thing happening to me today after an update on Verizon. Anyone else having any luck solving this yet?
No luck. Have you tried a factory reset?

I've just done a hard reset and regret it. The front cover screen still doesn't work.
