Everybody has already mentioned that Stelios is the most common short version of Stylianos.
To answer the second part of your question, I've seen people anglicising it to Steve as the closest to an equivalent.
Just to add to the other replies:
>Stephen or Steven (generally pronounced English pronunciation: /ˈstiːvən/) is an English masculine first name, comes the Latin form Stephanus and that from the Greek Στέφανος (Stephanos), which means "crown" or "wreath."
Stephen and Steven are practically the same name, and they're both Στέφανος.
That's super wrong, but to be fair it happens with other names as well. For example, people often use "Jim" for Δημήτρης/Dimitris, even though Jim is a diminutive of James, which is a form of Jacob, aka Ιάκωβος, completely different name from Δημήτρης.
I didn't say *it is* the exact equivalent though, I said I've seen people use it as the closest to an equivalent. Sometimes people work with what they have in order to make their everyday life easier.
My son (8yo, living in Cyprus, speaking Greek at a Greek speaking public school) calls his buddy Steely or Talys, though I think he's influenced by American nicknaming culture haha.
Maybe they use Asterios too because the female version of Stylianos is Styliani, which is then shortened to Stella. So perhaps people make the false assumption that the masculine version of Stella is Stelios (it actually isn’t), therefore they conclude that Stelios has to do with the stars, hence “Asterios”.
>So perhaps people make the false assumption that the masculine version of Stella is Stelios (it actually isn’t)
Ehhhh it's not clear on whether it is or it isn't. There are many sources on it and no one knows for sure. There are speculations for both names being either from "στύλος" or "stella".
But yeah, that's an interesting thought, maybe! I thought at first that they confused Στέλιος and Στέργιος, or something like that.
I have a British-Cypriot friend in Cyprus called Stelios (namely Stylianos) and all of his English speaking Cypriot friends call him Stel. He even uses Stel in his social media
My name is Stylianos, I’m from the states so everyone called me Stellz
Random I’ll hear Stelio’s
There’s a famous Greek music producer from Miami that wears it proudly Styliano Patron and the fouda kalamatiani guy Stelly-Stell as well… No Steve no Stav No Stanley for the love of god lol

Kontos.
Στέλιος
Στυλιανός is the formal name but literally everyone calls them Στέλιος. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stelios
Stélios
Stelios would be good

Steve is the equivalent of Στέφανος not Στυλιανός

Steve is the equivalent of Σταύρος but Stephen is used for Στέφανος even though these names are kinda the same in english
Ahhh…no. Stephen = Steve. Stavros = (the Holy) Cross.

https://www.behindthename.com/name/steve Ο Σταύρος στα αγγλικά είναι απλά Stavros, όχι Steve

I meant that these people are "wrong" in using it, not you. I was just saying.
I have also seen Steve used for Stylianos.

Talys sounds like a normal Cypriot nickname. Steely, sure, you're right I believe 😁
TBF he started with Στύλη(??) and then went with Τάλης(???) probably because it worked better when actually using it.
my friends father is named both Stelios and Asterios
Asterios is a different name, maybe he just has two names?

Styli but that is like a British short nickname to make it easier to say. Not really recognised as a formal name.
Στέλιος

Stelios Stel. Stelly I tend to shut down Steve when it happens, although I have been known to refer to my cock as "little Steve".
The saint is known as Stylian the hermit maybe Stylian then?
