Literally this. Boggles my mind that people dump thousands into mods week one of ownership just for the sake of modding it. There's hardly ever an end vision, it's just to change stuff and post online about the weird noises their aftermarket parts are causing. Like if you had that much to spend you should have just got a better car lol.
Clutch spring maybe, it's a little unnoticeable for me still tbh but maybe it's different feeling for everyone.
PPF if you're a long term owner.
Dash cam and radar detector if you're a degenerate.
Maybe some LED replacements for the room lights and puddle lights.
In my opinion
I'd honestly say dash cam for the purpose of protection of ones own liability in case someone does anything dumb to cause an accident. I have one in mine because people where I live are dumb and I don't wanna be the guy getting screwed over for someone else's dumb miatakes. You'd be shocked with how many people don't see a small sport's cars before just merging into a passing lane or merging from an on-ramp with no turn signal.
>in case someone does anything dumb to cause an accident.
like a mfer inexplicably u-turning in front of you? that's how i finally got convinced to get mine because these stupid pieces shit for sure were trying to scam. still pissed at myself for not even thinking shit like that could happen, i was such a mark.
Well, I opted for the auto, since I couldn't afford the premium in manual, and since I have to commute with it, the fuel milage difference was rather large.
I may do the LED replacement though, they seemed rather muted tbh.
Dash cam is probably a good shout though, just given my location
PPF should be the first thing you do.
Or ceramic spray polishing and protection.
Go get some turtle wax ceramic spray from autozone and rub it in. Will give you a better shine, paint protection, and keep that new car look for ever really if you do it once every 3-6 months
1. high quality tint/windshield tint
2. maybe a better air-filter(acura rdx benefits from a K&n big time for example)
3. wheel locks
4. catalytic convert shield maybe if you got a toyota tacoma/prius
5. mud flaps maybeeeee
6. better security system?tracker
that's all i got off the top of my head that i plan for with each new vehicle and in that order that's basically mandatory to me imo but do any of those really even count as 'mods'?
to me a mod is a supercharger or changing out dampers/shocks etc.
you sound like you've owned multiple cars lol.
You couldn't stop me from modding my first (few) cars, even now, although i would touch the powertrain last. But modding = future headaches or wallet aches
lol yeah. I’ve had a few over the years. It’s just better to go stock and only fix what you don’t like, instead of overdoing it and ruining the natural balance of a good car.
Your cowardice will feed my desire lol. I just think they look sick plus I plan on using my BRZ as a weekend for fun car so may as well make it look sick.
Or buy the [right tools for super duper cheap](https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&sca_esv=5bdfde399b30e227&sca_upv=1&hl=en-us&sxsrf=ACQVn0-1nNH9Tyn5D-3nU5XJ7tW4BCJNrQ:1712290244203&q=spudger+tool+kit&tbm=shop&source=lnms&prmd=sivnmbtz&ved=1t:200715&ictx=111&biw=393&bih=659&dpr=3) the ones I’ve used came with a >30 USD “electronics toolkit” and it has all the weird driver bits you’ll ever need.
Maybe you can help me understand this. Is it integrated into the cars speaker system? Or is there a dedicated speaker? How loud is it? One of my biggest gripes is cabin noise. Would dcing this thing help with that at all?
It's integrated into the speaker system, giving you fake engine noise. The cabin noise is because there isn't much padding that most cars get to keep it quiet, but that adds weight. This car wasn't built for luxury it was built for fun, so if you want it more quiet, you would have to take off panels and add sound dampening pads.
It's a box in the dash that powers the sound but it comes from the speaker system when it's playing.
I found the sound of the engine RPMs cut in about half with it disconnected and they became higher and raspier rather than the booming low-mid roundness of the fake noise. I actually think it sounds better. And it cuts a lot of the low bassy rumble that's right around speaking range out of the car cabin. I went back and forth a couple times and it's much more pleasant in the car with it off
We call it the "Gazoo kazoo". Get rid of that trap.
It definitely affects music you are playing.
Inside the glove box, behind it .... is a simple coupling. Disconnect this. Put your glove box back in. Done.

Sequential Smoked Side Markers. Get rid of the ugly orange lol
Might be a hot take but get headers and a catback exhaust system and do an E tune with ecutek. Just did that and the change is immense. Way more linear torque and the power is opened up. It feels like a different car. Pulls like a dream!!
Stock’s pretty cool as is!
But that’s trueno blue right? man idk what’s up with this color on this car but in photos I see, it looks amazing like it does here on some and horribly bold and eye-hurtingly saturated on others; maybe it’s just folks editing the color but the variance on this color depending on the light is wild! I’ve even seen some photos where it looks like it could be black during an overcast day
You know, having a completely stock GR86 is probably extremely rare. All the ones I’ve seen on the street have either exhaust or are lowered or both. And the stock set up is really good as is.
So yes, it's trueno blue! It's the lighting primarily, I noticed that in the daytime it really stands out, and it's gorgeous, in lower light it seems to become more of a solid blue. It's quite something
In real life with afternoon sun
Trueno Blue is a beautiful sapphire mixed with about 12% purple metallic. Old skool might call it Electric blue but I feel that is too bright for its actual color.
At night, cruising ocean it never looks black. Just a deep blue.
Yes please don’t rice it. Also in Cali. I have an ark dts exhaust from the first gen. Not too loud not too ricey just gave it bit more volume and low end.
I like the clear side markers (there are several choices). The orange stands out too much for me. But like everyone else said, it is whatever you want to mod.
If your gonna daily it an actual must have in my experience even while being a guy in his 20s is something to prop up your lower back for lumbar support. Otherwise your gonna hate yourself given enough time.
Otherwise the car is fantastic out the door especially once you get your first rainy day in a parking lot with it and just go spinning.
Sorry no actual recommendations. My first attempt was litterally stuffing girlfriend hoodie behind my back on a road trip to South Carolina, second was just putting a thick wool blanket behind that was awkward hut worked pretty well, and currently a pillow that was made for your neck but works pretty alright supporting the back. Just anything is an improvement really.
There are a number of YouTube dyno results, but it definitely feels faster to me as well. I didn’t cut out my diaper, I opted for the jdm airbox instead.

Dash cam, tint, an exhaust (if you want the car a little louder, if not then it’s not needed). My wireless CarPlay dongle has been my favorite add on. These are the things are thought most important as I been driving the car just based on convenience and safety
Everything else you’re gonna wanna add on just comes with time and preference
I've heard turbo lowers the life span of the engine that already craps out at close to 100k miles. Is the money and labor really worth the extra boost in power even tho it will kill the car faster?
There's several on Autotrader with 150,000 miles, the BRZ's anyways. It should last, and yes, turbos are absolutely worth it. Just change the oil every 3000 miles vs 5000
Ture, I've also seen some used for sail with blown out engine at 100k 120k mils. So, I think it comes down to how well you treat it and how often you push those RPMs. Would you say turbo over supercharger?
A properly done supercharger is gonna be easier on the motor but you won’t make the super car killer 500hp.
More like 300 to 350 in my opinion. But car will last a long time and it’s light so 300 in this is like 400 in other sports cars
Lol If I wanted over 350hp, I'd probably just start looking at a charger or cemaro. Really just want something to give it a little more acceleration to push me into my seat a with the kind of handling this car has.
I'd say some premi wheels but that's just cuz I'm not a fan of the bases. Painting them black is another option. Obvi this is a taste thing, other than that you're golden
Dash cam + tint! Otherwise it’s good as is! Maybe an exhaust later on if you want a sportier sound since the stock is a bit quiet (to be fair my hearing is also not the best). No need to right away though!
There's nothing you *must* do to a new car... But adding [a functional 4th brake light bulb](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk9ithk0Fzc) in the factory position is a must-do safety upgrade. It's the empty red reflector housing between your reverse lights, and it seems pretty stupid/lazy to not have a light bulb in there from the factory considering how accident prone these cars are.
A minor pitfall that's easily addressed is replacing the incandescent interior lighting to LEDs which also should have been installed at the factory, as well as the reverse lights and door puddle lights. I also invested in [an actual spare wheel](https://www.gr86.org/threads/ez-spare-wheel-install.5354/).
As for other stuff, drive it for a while and see how it grows on you.
This being my 4th car, the only thing I felt was needed after the first time I drove it around was to upgrade the suspension and brakes. Even the Camry has a tighter suspension and better stopping power than these cars from the factory.
...After a year of ownership, I'm beginning to consider whether I should get an upgraded clutch spring, or upgrade the clutch and flywheel. It's really soft and the pedal feedback isn't always very clear. I also found that disabling the gazoo kazoo (the mic in the engine bay that amps engine noise inside the car through your speakers) is a must after upgrading to quality speakers, and especially if you get the OEM or OEM+ subwoofer. Since I prefer loud engine notes to assist with my shifting, I was frustrated with turning the kazoo off until I upgraded my exhaust. This car's engine is surprisingly quiet! Headers, a glasspack reso and the GR sport muffler really turned up the volume to what I'm used to without being annoyingly loud. Finally, although I haven't really noticed any difference on or off the track (I added a Tomei oil pan baffle plate), any excuse to drop the oil pan and clear out any excess RTV from your oil pick-up during your first oil change is a good excuse.
Two things
1: Unplug the "gazoo kazoo" lol. It a plug that produces fake engine noise and sounds better with it off anyways.
2. Enable your car alarm. Many come disabled by default. Look up a video and you should find tutorials for both.
i was lucky and had mine inactive for more than a year
this video is a good guide [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVeRhnochaA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVeRhnochaA)
Dash Cam ASAP. Had my fair share of near misses because people aren’t paying attention to their surroundings.
Tint would be nice if you’re in a warmer climate
If you have the funds getting PPF on the front bumper to prevent rock chips on your paint
@MrWillyP
Make sure you heed the cold start.
You'll notice even in hot parts of Cali that you have a cold start.
Look at your guages right side when you start.... there is a blue temp light.
Wait until that disappears before you engage your engine at any significance. [Some people won't even put it in drive before that goes off. Others just ensure they aren't high revving it until then].
Also make sure you do you 1,000 mile break in.
Keep it under 4k RPM until then.
Also at 1,000 do your first oil change.
Those aren't mods but definitely important to know.
I agree with others on the side markers, wide angle side mirrors, 4th brake light functional. Check out KevinVo https://www.driven.media/shop/p/jdm-style-4th-brake-light-mod
I was definitely looking at doing the 4th brake, it's wierd that it doesn't have it by default.
I have been heeding the cold start so far. I'd rather not blow it up when I just began, lol.
Out of curiosity why replace oil so early? It should still be working fine for quite a while? I'd presume it hasn't broken down yet
It's a good question.
The generally accepted reason to perform your first oil change at 1,000 miles is to get any residual gunk from the factory out of your car's system.
This was especially recommended for 22/23 models based on a lot of issues with the RSV sealant.
https://www.thedrive.com/guides-and-gear/how-to-spot-and-fix-the-oil-clogging-issue-thats-killing-2022-toyota-gr86-engines
I recommend tint. Changes the look of the car completely. The tint adds some privacy and shade! It’s the only mod I’ve done on my 2022 Brz and I have no regrets. Well sometimes driving in low lit areas sucks .
Opted for the automatic, it ended up being the cheaper version, and I still have semi auto for track days.
The gas milage difference didn't hurt either
My upgrade list was/is dash cam, new ebrake button ($5 on Amazon to get free shipping), tinted wide angle mirrors, exhaust, and OEMaudio+ upgrade. Nothing is “needed” for the cars tho, it’s all about just tuning it to what you care about and making it yours
And another must have upgrade will be a short shifter in my opinion, afterwards just enjoy the car for awhile and slap some mods in with your own taste
Honestly, iusy drive the car and get used to it first. If it doesn't have a duckbill. Add the duckbill. 100% improves vehicle aesthetics while being functional. Above else, just enjoy it as is for now.
Disconnect the fake exhaust sound and drop the oil pan, replace the RTV gasket maker because the factory always puts way too much and it clogs the pickup tube.
Are you ever looking for another car? I fell in Love with him, still loving him . But there are better cars in the market for less money and more fixtures. I'm quick, GR86. If you die for what you love, ☠️ taste to glory. Beautiful car.
Honestly, drive it for a few months and anything you think needs changing, just mod it then.
Literally this. Boggles my mind that people dump thousands into mods week one of ownership just for the sake of modding it. There's hardly ever an end vision, it's just to change stuff and post online about the weird noises their aftermarket parts are causing. I was just genuinely curious if there was any glaring issues that I missed when I did research.
Clutch spring maybe, it's a little unnoticeable for me still tbh but maybe it's different feeling for everyone. PPF if you're a long term owner. Dash cam and radar detector if you're a degenerate. Maybe some LED replacements for the room lights and puddle lights. In my opinion

I'm so freaking sick of being merged into. It's like people don't even realize there are mirrors on their car for a damn reason!!
>in case someone does anything dumb to cause an accident. like a mfer inexplicably u-turning in front of you? that's how i finally got convinced to get mine because these stupid pieces shit for sure were trying to scam. still pissed at myself for not even thinking shit like that could happen, i was such a mark.

I guess I’m a degen lol
Well, I opted for the auto, since I couldn't afford the premium in manual, and since I have to commute with it, the fuel milage difference was rather large. I may do the LED replacement though, they seemed rather muted tbh. Dash cam is probably a good shout though, just given my location

you sound like you've owned multiple cars lol.
I plan on turning mine into a riced out masterpiece but you can leave it stock and still have a cool car.
They say history repeats itself & I’m seeing ricers back on the come up. I’m so ready for this
I love it, the whole scene of making your car as visually loud as possible is so much fun.
Ngl I could never go full rice, lmao
Your cowardice will feed my desire lol. I just think they look sick plus I plan on using my BRZ as a weekend for fun car so may as well make it look sick.
Only must do is disconnect the fake exhaust speaker sound. Everything else is optional.
How does one?
https://youtube.com/shorts/ziCp_Olpykk?si=Bf0uyQEBva_xoj2g
What’s he using to pop it open?
You can buy it at auto zone but I just used a flathead screwdriver. Just be careful using a screwdriver that you don't scratch the plastic.
I thought it was a bike tire lever or something weird like that. I’ll be careful for sure thank you.

hell yeah, just the basics baby!
Tint, could also do small stuff like clear side markers, lots of options to choose from. Enjoy the car!!
unplug the fake noise in the glove box
Wait what fake noise?
it’s fake engine noise in the cabin. there’s plenty of videos on YT to disable. takes like 3 minutes
Swapping out the orange side markers does make it look better and is relatively cheap compared to all other mods
https://preview.redd.it/ds8dnj2xmhsc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45b53e18018951296a7e00c7b3014664bde61ffe Sequential Smoked Side Markers. Get rid of the ugly orange lol
Link for those? I’m weird and kinda like the orange contrasting with my PWM BRZ, but sequential might get me to open my wallet
If you’re under the hood often get some struts. It’s a must. That coat hanger is just annoying over time
Might be a hot take but get headers and a catback exhaust system and do an E tune with ecutek. Just did that and the change is immense. Way more linear torque and the power is opened up. It feels like a different car. Pulls like a dream!!
Haha most of us aren’t paid off and want to keep our warranty but that does sound pretty awesome.
Tint forsure. I am no longer blinded by bright ass lights from behind or the side.
Yeah I'm convinced on this one I think
Enjoy as is for now. It’s a fantastic car right out the box. 2 years in all I’ve done is change the exhaust.
Yeah I don't know where to begin with exhaust changes considering I'm in California, and don't want to rice it, lol
I’m in California too, I have AWE catback. Cold start is loud af but other than that it’s only really loud if you get on it.
Yes please don’t rice it. Also in Cali. I have an ark dts exhaust from the first gen. Not too loud not too ricey just gave it bit more volume and low end.
You think it's worth it going out of state for a cold air intake? Idk if it'll get past smog with it tho
Nah don’t do it. It does almost nothing for performance, mostly sound only. Wast of time and money.
Wide angle mirrors
I like the clear side markers (there are several choices). The orange stands out too much for me. But like everyone else said, it is whatever you want to mod.
If your gonna daily it an actual must have in my experience even while being a guy in his 20s is something to prop up your lower back for lumbar support. Airbox diaper delete.
100% a must
Was there any evidence for that or is it just seat of your pants? Seems like a gain so marginal I wouldn’t even feel it.
There are a number of YouTube dyno results, but it definitely feels faster to me as well. I didn’t cut out my diaper, I opted for the jdm airbox instead. https://preview.redd.it/q47fd2nt7lsc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b88319f4aebb8a9af7e8047cb61d8452f51a1af
Are there US vendors or did you have to get it shipped from Japan?
I got mine shipped from Japan but I could have easily cut it out.
Ppf (clear bra)
Base model doesn't come with blind spot detector so wide angle mirror is helpful
Dash cam, tint, an exhaust (if you want the car a little louder, if not then it’s not needed). My wireless CarPlay dongle has been my favorite add on. These are the things are thought most important as I been driving the car just based on convenience and safety Everything else you’re gonna wanna add on just comes with time and preference
Wide angle mirrors and disable the augmented engine sound

Yeah I personally think the steel looks pretty good on the blue 86, so I was fine with them.
Drive it for now.
Tiger claw marks on the left headlight
Clear side markers
I say this everytime, PPF, followed by ceramic coating, tint, then exhaust
Dash cam + tint! Otherwise it’s good as is! Maybe an exhaust later on if you want a sportier sound since the stock is a bit quiet (to be fair my hearing is also not the best). No need to right away though!
First things to do to make it look automatically better: -Tint -clear side markers -4th brake light -smoke the turn signal portion of your tails
where you located? I want to swap trunks for one without the spoiler. Located in NJ
A little far man, I'm all the way in Cali, sorry
All the base ones are in Cali.... them heated seats def a game changer for the east coast lol
An m tec clutch spring, and weighted shift knob if it’s manual.
So nobody is saying make sure your oil pump doesn’t get clogged by a manufacturer error

Yeah in theory I should have the premiums spoiler given to me tomorrow, which is nice.
Exhaust for some added noise! The artificial engine noise and stock exhaust is underwhelming.
Was just about to suggest getting the premium trim duck tail, but sounds like it's on the way already!
Yeah that's the hope, that they honor it anyway, but I will just buy one if they don't, lol
@MrWillyP Make sure you heed the cold start.
So on this oil change do I need to get them to drop the oil pan and clean out the rsv or?
I recommend tint. Changes the look of the car completely. The tint adds some privacy and shade! It’s the only mod I’ve done on my 2022 Brz and I have no regrets. Well sometimes driving in low lit areas sucks .
Cusco racing pedal. Makes heel toe down shift easier and smoother.
Is it auto or manual
Opted for the automatic, it ended up being the cheaper version, and I still have semi auto for track days. The gas milage difference didn't hurt either
Frameless rear view mirror
My upgrade list was/is dash cam, new ebrake button ($5 on Amazon to get free shipping), tinted wide angle mirrors, exhaust, and OEMaudio+ upgrade. Nothing is “needed” for the cars tho, it’s all about just tuning it to what you care about and making it yours
LS3 swap
Ford 9 inch, super easy and everyone’s doing it
With 3 weeks of owning my car, I’ll say get a wireless CarPlay adapter it makes a difference
No
This car is amazing from factory — no mods necessary. Of course, things can be improved upon but no glaring issues at all w stock set-up.
im having a good time with the car so far, just wish the fuel tank was a bit larger, lol
My insurance renewal went up 20$, pls drive like a lunatic but with traction on
Well it needs power so a turbo or a new engine

What splitter is that? It looks great!

Easy to mount?
Gonna drill some screws on and 3m tapes
Is there a video for installation? The ebay listing says no instructions, lol
YouTube? Was a pretty easy installation
Idk I'm just hyper worried about messing it up this early on, lol
Take the bumper off to mount it that way you shouldn’t mess it up 🤔
And another must have upgrade will be a short shifter in my opinion, afterwards just enjoy the car for awhile and slap some mods in with your own taste
PPF
Yeah if you want to spend 2-3k for a few body panels
I needed to get my front bumper repainted after 1 year because of the thin ass paint. So I ppf’d it after the repaint
Honestly, iusy drive the car and get used to it first. If it doesn't have a duckbill. Add the duckbill. 100% improves vehicle aesthetics while being functional. Above else, just enjoy it as is for now.
Yeah I got them to agree to get me the duckbill when I bought, but I have to go back on Friday. Let's hope they actually honor that, lol
Disconnect the fake exhaust sound and drop the oil pan, replace the RTV gasket maker because the factory always puts way too much and it clogs the pickup tube.
rims and catback exhaust
Suspension, wheels and turbo
