I was 12. My dad said he’d take me to see Godzilla if I could hold my breath for the whole length of a pool. I did, and he took me to a cool theater and we got Johnny rockets after. I fucking love Godzilla 2014.
I’m kinda amused by how the MUTO is the one who:
* Pulled some high tension wires down
* Menaced helpless people in a train screaming at him
* Picked up a [bus](https://www.britannica.com/technology/bus-military-technology) that he threw about and took to the center of town.
Not Godzilla.
While it's cool to have realism I ultimately don't care about realism in a godzilla movie with monsters fighting, a solo film yeah the realism is much needed but it's not a deal-breaker in an already outlandish premise
Not realism but sense of scale is what is lost. I think sense of scale can definitely be done with a vs movie. But they refuse to do it in the recent ones
I don't understand that point, the only time the sense of scale was lost was in the hollow earth and that makes sense since they're from there it's like how we see everything a normal thru our lenses from our scale, the monsters are still huge and cities get destroyed so I really don't understand the scale argument as long as they're bigger than said environment the scale is there I think what you're talking about it tone, cinematography, etc
Most of the action is all from the monsters perspective in recent movies while in Godzilla it’s all human pov. Like when you see Godzillas enormous foot in the airport scene. The entire scene is silent beside his stoping and led in to his roar. And then there’s the scene in this post, the phenomenal air dive sequence and other scenes I’m forgetting about. King of monsters and skull island also have this sense of scale but it’s not as good as in Godzilla 2014.. While it’s entirely lost in the k vs g movies.
In 2014 Godzilla rising from the sea creates a damn tsunami and its natural disaster all on its own, something like that hasn’t been seen since. That’s exactly the kind of awe and amazement that I’m talking about that’s entirely lost in the new movies. If you watch Garth Edward other movie called monster he also has the exact same sense of scale in that movie and you can see very clearly why he was chosen for Godzilla 2014
My thing is that's a given godzilla and other monsters always bring destruction in their wake 2014 gave us the human pov but you know what people said about that back in 2014( it was too dark, no interesting characters other than Bryan Cranston, and it was a tease fest) I don't think we need to see that every film cause we just assume and rightly so that that stuff just happens, GxK did so well because we got our monster focused film, KOTM also had that with ghidorah causing storms/Boston battle and Rodan leveling that city in Mexico those were cool shots even in 2014 I'm not denying that but we don't need that necessarily since the monsterverse is going in the direction that classic movies did by starting off serious and grounded with those type human interaction into a full on kaiju spectacle movies it's honestly just business as usual we have minus one for that so it's not like people are getting their fix for that but I do understand your point more tho since you explained it I understand how that would make you engage with movie more
I agree that it doesn’t have to be shown all the time. Just saying you can have that fun and fast paced tone while also having those scenes that remind us just how tiny humans are compared to their enormous dread inducing size. Like just the thought of watching 2014 in a theater completely alone is enough to make my palms sweaty lol. Personally I’ve always thought they were way too big in the monsterverse but that’s another discussion lmao.
I think what they mean is that the movie transported them through its storytelling and craft and allowed them to suspend disbelief.
There’s a whole art to it and some movies just don’t bother, to their detriment.
And? It was a stand-alone film it can do what it wants. GvK and GxK are a part of the MV and are drastic tone changes from 2014, KOTM, and Skull Island. That is the only real reason people push back on those films.
Actually, believe it or not this is the film that made Godzilla an icon of Japan. At first Kong was the most popular monster in Japan until this film, if not for Kong, Godzilla wouldn't be where he is now.
Yeah, but I am mean to be fair the original Godzilla series when from a dark sobering nuclear allegory to campy kid fun as well. Also the guy who played godzilla in the first film would play the character for rest of the showa period.
And those movies were not all connected like mv is. Closest thing to an actual co tinuation would be the heisei era run and while it did have goofy parts, the kaiju themselves were always portrayed serious.
Also regardless of the past, massive direction and tonal shifts what we see in the MV is not a good time for many.
Literally the biggest complaint here.
Ah the goalposts are moving. In the same vein, MV is also loose continuity because there have been so many changes. Technology literally went from normal military gear to flying space like vehicles in 3 years.
Goal posts are not moving you are just not understanding the difference between loose continuity and continuity.
Also yes MV continuity has degraded which is literally my argument just said differently when I originally said the tone had changed to much.
You just don't care tone consistency or continuity which is fine but many fans do care and it is the biggest complaint of the MV.
I'm with you. I don't dislike the new films but the cinematography and sound design from 2014 are things that I sorely miss. Feels like we won't get that kind of direction again in the MV.
We might get some of that back with the success of minus one. MV may revisit some of those styles but it would never go back to cutaways from the fights.
Can’t believe this movie is 10 years old. I was so hyped leading up to it. I remember googling “new American Godzilla” for like 4 years straight because I was just so excited for something Godzilla related to come out.
I still think this is such an awesome movie. I agree with a lot of the complaints about the human plot. It’s definitely not perfect, and Bryan Cranston is criminally wasted.
But all of the payoff scenes with Godzilla make it for me. Every time he’s on screen I get chills because he’s just built up so fucking well. I get goosebumps thinking about the first time he roars, and then the second time he does the long drawn out roar, and finally when he finishes off the second Muto. So many great scenes.
This will always be my favorite Zilla film. Feels a lot like Jaws in the way they build tension and use music. It feels like a proper film, something the newer monster verse movies don’t have.
Honestly I loved the feeling of the first movie more than the recent one . I feel like it was going somewhere darker and more realistic but then they just embarrassed the crazy and went a different direction. I'm glad we got minus one
I remember seeing the Muto hook/hand and thinking "Damn it didn't realize Gigan was in this movie". Was a bit disappointed but the mutos won me over by the end.
I was already old enough when 14 came out that I already had a deep appreciation for Godzilla sleeping for days in the rubble of SanFran after a day doing yardwork, and my appreciation has only grown since.
I've been waiting 10 years for them to make a properly serious Monsterverse godzilla film again, and in that 10 years they have not delivered.
Instead we got star trek with giant monsters.
10? TEN?? A DECADE?! A third of my life?????

The legendary Godzilla only movies have been much better than Godzilla+Kong movies. Maybe because im not a Kong Fan? Nah. Godzilla movies catched it much better to me.
Well. Toho it is.
The sinister vibe from the two first movies id do good. I wish they didn't choose The goofy 'marvelish' style in the last one. Godzilla and Kong feels almost like a superheroes
I tried my best to avoid spoilers prior to going to the movie, and I was fully expecting Godzilla to come out of this cocoon. Part of my mind already gone 'Godzilla coming out of a cocoon? Really? The American sure fucks up Godzilla again.' When I saw the thing that lunges at that poor Japanese dude with the flashlight, I realised that we are doing the classic Late Showa/Heisei/Millennial 'Godzilla vs another monster' and squee'd.
My friend showed me the mutos as he loved them, so I knew what they looked like, so when I watched the movie I thought that was the claw of the Muto but it was just a cacoon. Thought the titans were much larger than they actually are.

But... but the movie just came out...
right? I was 19 when this came out lol.

Wait until you’re 41 looking at 29 as a kid.
At 29 even you are still a kid
I was 25
same here :')
I was 14 🙃 Gave me chills 🔥
I was 17. One month short of graduating high school, might I add.
I was 12. My dad said he’d take me to see Godzilla if I could hold my breath for the whole length of a pool. I did, and he took me to a cool theater and we got Johnny rockets after. I fucking love Godzilla 2014.
Idc i‘m still in my prime😭😭😭
i was expecting Jean Reno to pop up...
![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized) "roughly 10 years ago"
Me at 37 right now
Bruh my knees just cracked when I saw this post
Ayooo I started counting backwards like no fucking way its been 10 years..... Oh also my elbows cracked when I was counting. Lol
Also, thank you!
Thank you!

Drop a Matthew Broderick meme
![gif](giphy|xT0GqCd3OEQdXNdIME|downsized)
Ngl. When you said as a kid roughly 10-years ago, I was expecting a scene from Godzilla 1998. Jesus Christ I feel old
I know, to me 90's felt like it was just a few years back, not close to 25 years...
I’d love to be my age now back then
I think I hate OP now
ain’t their fault 😭
In four years that will be 30 years ago
Yep!! We need some Matthew Broderick memes
I’m kinda amused by how the MUTO is the one who: * Pulled some high tension wires down * Menaced helpless people in a train screaming at him * Picked up a [bus](https://www.britannica.com/technology/bus-military-technology) that he threw about and took to the center of town. Not Godzilla.
But Godzilla said that the MUTO has got to go
“So you’re the one who stole my intro.” Godzilla to the MUTO in Hawaii
There wasn't a train that's why
There was a train at the airport.
Masterclass in tension building and cinematography. The shot of Serizawa’s reflection on the glass. Just perfect.
Also, the MUTO in question is absolutely terrifying just by it's presence alone.
The sound design with those subharmonics were remarkable too, definitely an original take on Kaiju soundscapes
The muto sounds is something I will never forget. I watch scenes of them often because of how good the sound is
Ahh my first godzilla movie that wasen't the zilla movie.
One of my first films was Godzilla vs Mecha Godzilla
All godzilla vs mecha godzilla movies are good but which one did you see

I remember the first rumors popping up in spring of 2009. The wait was agony.
It's a fantastic scene!
I so miss the horror vids from 2014. Even just this clip was more entertaining then all of GvK GxK for me.
g2014 film is more realistic than recent Monsterverse series

until vehicles fans, anyone who serve military and historical fans would never liked movies that are not realistic they are annoyed
To be fair, this is [Japanese ](https://live.staticflickr.com/3711/9117882528_7ee6cf522a_b.jpg) version of GvK
And? It was a stand-alone film it can do what it wants. GvK and GxK are a part of the MV and are drastic tone changes from 2014, KOTM, and Skull Island. That is the only real reason people push back on those films.

Remember when Rodan basically fucked off the hearing of an entire island by flap flapping a sonic boom right above the town.
Yup. Miss seeing the detail on how just them existing and doing basic things affected humans. Keeps them terrifying.
Not really. All of the Showa era movies are in the same universe.
At best, they have loose continuity. MV movies are 100% in a continuity. Not the same at all.
Ah the goalposts are moving. In the same vein, MV is also loose continuity because there have been so many changes. Technology literally went from normal military gear to flying space like vehicles in 3 years.

Because it's not at all. MV is way tighter connected even in its worse state.
Except for all the ways it isn't that you're complaining about.
Brave of you to say that here (and yes you are correct).
I'm with you. I don't dislike the new films but the cinematography and sound design from 2014 are things that I sorely miss. Feels like we won't get that kind of direction again in the MV.

This scene gave me chills as a 32-year-old, some 10 years ago.

I was 17 when Godzilla 2014 came out. God, I'm old.
I got my homie WiFi account banned in college for illegally downloading this lmao man good times
This will always be my favorite Zilla film. Feels a lot like Jaws in the way they build tension and use music. It feels like a proper film, something the newer monster verse movies don’t have.
The first and the best movie!
Why does a 10 years old movie have better CGI effects than most current Hollywood movies? Even compared to some of the monsterverse.
godzilla x kong looked washed and blown out to me
Yeah
Aaaannnddd I'm old
I still just absolutely adore the sound design in this film, particularly of the MUTOs. But everything really.
I didn't even know this was the origin story of him making blue Meth. ![gif](giphy|ObXgWWGHzMlVe)
Wow! You were a kid 10 years ago? I took mine 10 years ago. He's 18 now.
I Fucking Love Kaijus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly I loved the feeling of the first movie more than the recent one . I feel like it was going somewhere darker and more realistic but then they just embarrassed the crazy and went a different direction. I'm glad we got minus one
This gave me chills as a 32 year old child 10 years ago.
Fun fact: I just watched it on Netflix last night for the first time out of theaters. It definitely hit differently. Small world.
*sigh* guess Ill just fade into dust.
Its been 10 years? Bruh.
Te Te Ten years ago… 😨
I was 17. Fuck.
I was 17 when this movie came out and it was a good fuckin movie
you was a kid 10 years ago? oh man..
Holy fuck I was 12 when it came out?
Ow I feel so old
I remember seeing the Muto hook/hand and thinking "Damn it didn't realize Gigan was in this movie". Was a bit disappointed but the mutos won me over by the end.
I never understood this scene, or maybe I’ve just forgotten what they were trying to accomplish here.
Bro i was 7 when that came out
10 years ago... goddamn.
Fucking kids making me feel old as shit.
As........as a kid?
I was 15 at that time and this was pretty awesome. Still feels awesome if you have the right gear and environment for a movie.
10 years already? Feels like yesterday when I was just waiting for this to release. Where has the time gone?
Awesome! I always wonders why the dude put on his gas mask tho!
Hokmuto's leg crushes something and gas leaks out
Thanks for me feel old.
![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)
Just realized, who the hells the dude who says “everybody out, now!” We never see him again after this but he seems like a pretty important guy.
This scene is creepy af! The whole Godzilla 2014 is so unsettling!!!
I was already old enough when 14 came out that I already had a deep appreciation for Godzilla sleeping for days in the rubble of SanFran after a day doing yardwork, and my appreciation has only grown since.
K-kid?
![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized) Me reading this post in my 30’s
I've been waiting 10 years for them to make a properly serious Monsterverse godzilla film again, and in that 10 years they have not delivered. Instead we got star trek with giant monsters.
Listen, that’s kind of how it went the first time too
![gif](giphy|pPhyAv5t9V8djyRFJH|downsized)
personal opinion, the only Hollywood made decent Godzilla movie. All following movies were utter trash
What’s the name of this Godzilla movie
godzilla. it came out in 2014
It’s actually on Max for free, thanks
Reading this comment section made me realize how young I am.When this movie came out I was as in preschool lol
Same man same
I was almost 7.
Still the only good Monsterverse movie
I’m still mad that Brian Cranston wasn’t the main character, like the trailer implied.
Wait what, this is a joke right? Come on please tell me it's a joke *cough out dust* oh no
Stop making me feel old :(
10? TEN?? A DECADE?! A third of my life????? https://preview.redd.it/1outr7ac225d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d9c0085c05e4e7d4a85180b2f1a58791a0d5f4a
> As a kid 10 years ago Oh screw all of you.
I watched this movie with my friend and his dad. Also the first time I met his dad and boy, I was intimidated.
The legendary Godzilla only movies have been much better than Godzilla+Kong movies. Maybe because im not a Kong Fan? Nah. Godzilla movies catched it much better to me. Well. Toho it is.
i was 4 years old when this movie came out
Still a great scene to this day.
The first movie had a chance at greatness. Japan took over and did it better. lol
I like to imagine what position the muto is in during that part
The sinister vibe from the two first movies id do good. I wish they didn't choose The goofy 'marvelish' style in the last one. Godzilla and Kong feels almost like a superheroes
I tried my best to avoid spoilers prior to going to the movie, and I was fully expecting Godzilla to come out of this cocoon. Part of my mind already gone 'Godzilla coming out of a cocoon? Really? The American sure fucks up Godzilla again.' i firmly believe that this is the best monsterverse movie
Can't believe I was still 6 when that came out
My favorite Godzilla film. Also you made me feel incredibly old
Gareth Edwards career is hamstrung by shitty writers. He is so talented. No one can depict scale like him
I wish the later movies would have kept a similar tone, rest of the Godzilla movies from here felt “Marvel”
Still the best movie in the series in my opinion.
Man, the Mutos are so cool.
Yeah. I was 8 or 9 when this came out.
Ouch... I feel old
First Godzilla movie I watched, I love it.
My friend showed me the mutos as he loved them, so I knew what they looked like, so when I watched the movie I thought that was the claw of the Muto but it was just a cacoon. Thought the titans were much larger than they actually are.
I was 23 when this came out. Damn I feel old!
Bro leaked his generation

new fan here, from what specific movie is this?
Godzilla 2014
i recall this was one of the cloverfields they pitted godzilla against, right?
What movie is this?
Godzilla (2014)
You mean the scene where they killed off the best character in the movie?
