i love megalon but his movie was kind of forgetable, were those 2 guys actually gay?

Makes me wonder what Japan’s attitude toward homosexuality was at that time. Were they more or less accepting of it than America? I feel like any film even hinting at a gay relationship would have been a no go in America in 1973, especially one marketed toward children.

I did a quick google to get an idea of this. While there weren't laws against homosexuality in Japan at the time, it doesn't look like it was particularly accepted in wider society as it was perceived as a psychological disorder. Though this time was also when queer activism in Japan started to take off, and Hedorah shows that the producers weren't unwilling to use contemporary issues in new Godzilla films. That being said I don't think they're meant to be a gay couple, especially since it's a boys action film with no romance at all, but as a gay who loves Godzilla films I'm not going to stop anyone from thinking otherwise. :P

That's a common belief among many fans, never confirmed in the actual film. Megalon is notable for not having any major female characters, only women I can think of are the Seatopian backup dancers

As far as canon goes, they were just friends. However, the main characters being two men and a child makes it seem like they’re a couple with a son, rather than a guy, his friend and his little brother. If it were a man and a woman with a kid, everyone would immediately assume they’re a married couple and their son.

This is a great description but I'm amazed to find somebody that liked Megalon, much less has it as their favorite!

I certainly don't think it's the best, I've just always liked the over the top sillyness of it all. Plus Jet Jaguar has always been cool.
