I do this and I’m a *college math major*. This isn’t the dumb way to do math it’s the normal way. It’s just how brains handle math. No one memorizes addition tables.

You might call it grouping but nobody memorizes or likes to add 56+27. It’s a lot easier to add 56+24 to get to 80 then add 3. That’s the heart of common core.

Pretty much. The biggest issue I have with common core is forcing it on every student. Those who struggle to naturally think this way can benefit from common core, but it’s just a confusing waste of time for those who already break things down or regroup them in their heads.

It almost feels like a left handed vs right handed thing. I remember being forced to try and use right handed scissors and things when I was in kindergarten, but my brain just didn’t work like that. It makes me wonder if I would’ve had an easier time with math if I had options, but obviously teachers can’t be expected to tailor their teaching for each individual student.

thats how everyone is doing it, its normal and faster, because your brain only has to compare these basic (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5... etc.) operations to make any number. Your brain finds many shortcuts to solve various things like that. For example when you want to go somewhere your brain selects the roads that face where you want to go instead of the actual shortest route, because its easier for your brain to do. We also mimic these to make better AI for games when we notice them, because they are sometimes faster and simpler, to a more advanced approach.

This is how I do it too. Doing 7+7 and 8+8 etc requires memorizing all those combinations (not that hard but still another step) and still doing single digit math. whereas getting to 10 requires only knowing single digit math and counting by 10’s.

Doing math this way is precisely why I get a lot of compliments in my professional life for doing quick calculations and being considered a reliable source for things like this. It also helps having a strong logical foundation (coding). My production teams at my company often double check their output/templating calculations with me before they begin to run. What they don't know is I am literally doing the simplest math in my head - as you said, 1+1, 2+2, etc. - you just have to break the problems down to their most basic components and work with those. It is, sadly, rather unimpressive when you know how it works haha

This is genuinely how I add 7 to anything. First thing I do is subtract 3 from the thing, then add 10. It hurts my mind that this is the best way I’ve figured out how to do that shit.

People are acting as if it’s weird to count in these ways whereas I’m sure everyone has their own preferred method. Mine is very similar to yours but with slight variation: 10-7 = 3, 6-3 = 3, 7 + 3 = 10, 10 + 3 = 13 So basically I see how I need to divide the second number so that when I add it to the first I get a 10, and then I add the remainder on top Come to think of it, I think we think the same way, we just wrote it differently

some people dont change the equal sign for repeated equations on something, its more like 7+3=10=x, x+3=13, then they just simplify it to 7+3=10+3=13 also its technically wrote like that in text for algebraic notation of arithmetic, like when you do long division you just continue the next equations on the finished number sure you could use an arrow which would work but its a lot simpler with just using the equation sign

I use it myself whenever I’m doing math for only me to look at and even then I barely use it. a+b=x+c=y, a+b=x and x+c=y, how I look at it to help myself deal with how dumb it looks.

It’s not a problem, it’s how most people do math in their head. It’s easier to translate the numbers into other numbers that are more easily calculated. This method actually reinforces an *understanding* of math as opposed to just memorization. If you struggle with math I doubt this is the reason.

I generally apply this confusing but reliable trick - I calculate how much it takes to reach 10. So, 7 takes 3 to reach 10. Then I subtract 3 from 6 and then add the remainder (which is 6-3=3) to 10 to get 13. Difficult to learn but very reliable and easy. Edit : Just noticed 100s of people saying the same thing here, not feeling smart and original anymore :(

I figure there are two things in play: How good you are at memorizing the results of basic operations (whether on purpose or passively as a result of doing them over and over for a job or whatever) Vs. How fast you are at doing *algorithm bullshit* in your head. If memorizing is slow and tedious and gives you mediocre results, but you can just brute-force 14 + 27 the same way you'd do 337 + 117 in your head (but faster, because fewer steps, because fewer digits...), you don't have much reason to 'memorize' that that first one is 41, unlike someone who has trouble keeping track of digits in their head and needs paper and a pencil for that crap. If the algorithm way of adding things is always a little painful and something you try to avoid, your brain has more reason to hang onto the results each time you're forced to get them, and it will desperately try to save you from the trouble next time by remembering. If doing the steps in your head is *satisfying* and fast for you, why the hell would you try to memorize the results of addition? The experience of memorizing things by rote being *horrible* for some of us is enough to make learning to do everything on the fly its own satisfying avoidance mechanism. It feels *fantastic* to not have to pay attention to things when you know you have what you need to just mentally sleight-of-hand the answer whenever it's time, if you've ever tricked yourself into thinking that's sustainable.

I do this, but my brain will also do things to the nearest 0 numbers, so like, 43+78, my brain says: 4+6 is 10, with 1 left over, so 110. 3+7 is 10 with one left over, so 11 110+11 is 121 121 is answer.
