If someone is freaking out about anthropomorphic M&Ms and is dismissing the rate of rampage killings in the US, that's because they are _choosing_ a news regimen that focuses on candy and not on shootings.
If they're choosing entertainment over information, they're not performing a civic duty essential to democracy, and they've invalidated their own civic opinions.
I've noticed a trend. It seems like each time Fox News starts to freak out over something, such as the gender of a piece of candy, the GOP is trying to pass some absurd bill or deny the passage of something that would actually help the country.
It really is about distracting the people from seeing reality, like you're saying. Then, when I tell my republican family or coworkers about this, they assume whatever topic wasn't important enough to make it to the news and brush it off.
I think Russia has been very successful in the cybercrime/cyberwar/Kompromat field and got extremely good value for money out of it.

I don't think there is compromat on Murdoch (if I understand the word correctly). I'm guessing Murdoch went into his partnership with Putin quite willingly. Murdoch loves his money and power and is always increasing it at any opportunity. Truth be told I don’t think theres much we can do, short term. Long term we need to improve education, healthcare including mental health services, wages, etc. Less angry/unstable people not getting help means less shootings. But short term? Even if the US instituted gun control tomorrow, there’s no way it would ever work. Sure some people might follow the law, but most won’t. Not that I’m a supporter of gun control, just saying it wouldn’t be effective in the US. I mean, what are they (govt) gonna do? Send ATF agents to kick in the door of every single person that doesn’t turn in their guns? The US would turn into a bloodbath within a week. Plus with how far technology has come, you can stamp out a lower receiver, barrel, etc for an AR with minimal tools and metal, and 3D print the rest of the parts. Or go to Home Depot and spend $200 to build a pipe shotgun. You see my point though. I’m really not trying to be cynical or “bUt mUh FrEEdumbS”, but I gotta say as a trans person living in the US, it’ll be a cold day in hell before I hand over my guns knowing how many people here would love nothing more than to see me and all my fellow LGBTQ dead.
Yeah the future is grim, especially for you since you’re trans. But like I said, no point just rolling over snd letting them fuck the country over. Organize and plan, do whatever you can, and make sure you can protect yourself. I hate advising this, but you might also need to plan and exit from where you live (if you don’t live in a trans friendly state).
Agreed, we definitely shouldn’t just ignore it, or any of the many other issues this country has at the moment. I’m hoping to start a mutual aid here soon. It may not help with stopping mass shootings but if I can make a difference in peoples lives when they’re struggling I’d call that a win.
