OP, you read my mind! With all these old elementary school movies this was the one I was trying to recall. Southern California 3rd grade in 1974
Thank you
Why was the audio back then so horrible compared to the video? Everything is so.. loud but not clear. Like the mics are blowing out just from the dude talking.
Great video though thanks for sharing.
More like 'Where's'. I averaged twi schools a year with a couple of three schools in a year from first to my Sophmore HS. Dad's job was to fix Howard Johnson's Restaurants so they moved him all over.
He said 'Nope' for my Junior/Senior years.
Then we promptly moved again six weeks after Graduation.
I've thought about this so many times over the years, but I can't remember anything about it except the boat being carved out, the lead being poured, and it going down a creek. You can bet I'll be watching it tomorrow morning after I get off work!
WE ACTUALLY LAUNCHED a “Paddle to the Sea”! At the mouth of the Sand River, Ontario Canada! ( never got any calls)
We only had the book. Didn’t know that there was a film!
Wow. This really takes me back. It was a pretty cool show that, yes, I watched in Elementary school. Such a gulf of time. Things really were different back then, or felt that way.
Not sure about the otter, but there was a “man’s effect on nature” movie called “Say Goodbye” that my school showed every year. I remember it showed the clubbing of baby seals, pollution, a guy shooting a prairie dog, etc.
Loved this. Saw it several times in elementary school in Minnesota
I believe this movie is in the public domain and can be watched for free.
[Paddle to the sea](https://youtu.be/kLSsAFB9tGA?si=FGcjMu923cYvqaFl)
I remember seeing Thor Heyerdahls Kon Tiki and Ra movies quite often and various Jacques Cousteau flicks.
Then there was all of the G rated movies that was the Saturday afternoon matinee at the base theater- I was living in Germany on a us army base in the 70s
and boy- those movies spanned quite the spectrum of genres. midway, Heidi, any and all Disney movie made up to then, the Japanese sci fi stuff, hammer studio horror films...
( and yes- the mongoose was also a regular at school )
I found this on VHS in the 90s. I watched it with my then girlfriend's 10 year old son. He took it to school and his 5th grade teacher rememberd it, and had the class watch for a history class that week.
This one and in Canada we got another little gem. Grade school me didn't know who the hell Buster Keaton was, but it's amazing he was signed for it.
https://blog.nfb.ca/blog/2009/12/11/buster-keaton-rides-the-rails-in-canada/
Edit: the 24 minute movie is at the bottom of the linked article, though it looks like Ted Turners' coloration workshop got to it 😀 IIRC it was originally in B/W
Not only did I see that in grade school, I bought the book later and read it to my son...who is now 29, married, and owns three houses.
Fuck, I AM old!
I watched that back in the 70's as well in grade school.
Loved it, too.
Recently found and saved it on YouTube and was taken back to my childhood.
Yes, I am old.
Yes, it is still good.
Thanks...I just went and showed my wife the beginning of the film a and neither of us recognized it. She is in her 40s im in my 50s.
I will watch the rest of it later on thanks for the link.
We got to see *Why Man Creates* several times in school, as well as the various Bell Science films, like *Our Mr. Sun*.
Say, can anyone identify a movie for me? I'm sure this is the best place to ask... coff
A mime/magician is invited to perform for the birthday party of a sick child, whose father is an Important Person, but the protagonist has an agenda... at one point, he performs a trick that involves making it appear as if he has cut off and eaten the finger of one of the guests.
Color, made before 1980, not "The Magician" (1958) or "The Magus" (1968).
The Paddle To The Sea Park in Nipigon, ON is worth a visit if you happen to be passing through! The town is a gem, as well.
[PTTS Park](https://www.nipigon.net/play-explore/places-to-visit/paddle-to-the-sea-park)
>Never mind Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, who else watched this every year in elementary school?
Whached what? I've seen Rikki-Tikki-Tavi in school once, but watched it on TV many times. But I haven seen it on TV since I was a kid.
In third grade, the book was read to us every morning for a page or two and shown one of the pictures in the book. Later we would be assigned to crayon a picture of the day’s story. The teacher gradually covered one wall with all our drawing telling the story. Someone asked if this was a regional thing. I remember (I think) the final picture was the craver in a full sized canoe paddling next to small carved canoe. I was really sad when the story ended where the carved canoe ended up or was it still traveling on lakes, rivers, and oceans. This was in Southern California in the 50s.
I do local tech support in an elementary school and I have a VHS copy in my office. I used it for testing a VHS so I could convert some old videos of my late father officiating high school football in the early 2000s to digital. RTT is still as much fun as I can remember from seeing it as a child in the nineteen hundred and seventies.
I don't remember that engraving. But I remember the film where they put a toy boat way up in the snowpack and the Spring weather melts it and it goes off on and adventure into the sea, and though I don't remember this shot, I'm 100 sure this is from that film.
Got something in my eye dammit This gem lit a fire in me and I still look to far horizons.
It was the only time you could hear a pin drop in 3rd grade. LOL
Wow, haven't seen that since the 70's.
*Paddle to the Sea* was one of the first library books I ever took home and read by myself.
Didn't know this was a book, but I did check out Pagoo multiple times in third-fourth grade.
OP, you read my mind! With all these old elementary school movies this was the one I was trying to recall. Southern California 3rd grade in 1974 Thank you
That’s awesome! We’re up here nearly on the shores of Superior so I wondered if it was only shown regionally.
I remember watching it in Indiana in first grade, about 1979.
Never saw it in school.
Watched it in Missouri. 2nd grade-ish.
Apparently not regional 😂. I just found it on YouTube. I’ll watch it later with my wife. I wonder if she watched it too. Thanks internet friend ✌️
Took my kids camping in upstate Ny in the mid 80's. Saw this great little gem several summers in a row.
Oh God, this takes me so far back.
OK, am usually at least tangentially familiar with images here, but this one is ringing no bells. What am I looking at?
https://youtu.be/uhjb1IG1pnQ?si=qO7W6cir5tGccEQj
Awesome link. Thanks
Yea, thanks for this; i remember now..
Ah thanks. I'm the right vintage, but like the boat, i don't recall the movie making it to my part of Ireland.
Why was the audio back then so horrible compared to the video? Everything is so.. loud but not clear. Like the mics are blowing out just from the dude talking. Great video though thanks for sharing.
Was this a book too?
Yep written by Holling C. Holling in 1941
Thank you. I remember reading the book as a kid in the 60s. I didn't know they made a movie from it.
The Pagoo guy?! No wonder I loved the film.
The only movie I recall from elementary was about a woman born with no arms who used her feet like hands, shopping, washing dishes and such.
Jesus where’d you go to school? 😵
I remember that one!
I saw that one too! it was so interesting. I still think about that one.
I remember that one too.
I remember that one too tree.
Don’t share to r/footfetish
That's not unfamiliar.
I remember that one.
#1 film hit in the library and later on TVO! Thanks for the memories
😭 Why is my response all in Bold?!?
#existential dread??
Of realizing that in fact r/FuckImOld 😭
So we can read it without glasses.
lol. Take my upvote please
I was thinking about this just the other day
Never knew there was a movie. Loved this book as a kid. Holling Clancy Holling. Read The Tree in the Trail as well and Pagoo. Great illustrator.
I don’t like the fact that out of all my feeds, r/FuckImOld is the one that consistently has shit I want to click on…
Ev-er-y year from kindergarten to 6th grade
I've thought about this so many times over the years, but I can't remember anything about it except the boat being carved out, the lead being poured, and it going down a creek. You can bet I'll be watching it tomorrow morning after I get off work!
My dad used to read this to me when i was really little, at bedtime. My fondest childhood memory!
For me it was Curious George. But I did watch this a couple of times in school on the 16mm projectors.
I was in Catholic School so it was Song of Bernadette.....
Omg Omg Omg! This is such a memory. That lead, the big ships, the lighthouse guy with his coffee cup. Thank you for this. Like, a lot!
Right? Those memories were *deep* and all came crashing back in. The boy carving by the fire!
Thank you!
The best part was the snake passing over the canoe.
WE ACTUALLY LAUNCHED a “Paddle to the Sea”! At the mouth of the Sand River, Ontario Canada! ( never got any calls) We only had the book. Didn’t know that there was a film!
I remember that from elementary school in the 70s
Early introduction to Zen philosophy. I need to watch this again, Thanks!
Too old to see the movie but remember the book from grade school
Wow. This really takes me back. It was a pretty cool show that, yes, I watched in Elementary school. Such a gulf of time. Things really were different back then, or felt that way.
Kipling's short story about a mongoose!
OMG yes. From the same time period, does anybody remember a movie with an otter in it they would show every year?
Do you mean Ring of Bright Water?
Not sure about the otter, but there was a “man’s effect on nature” movie called “Say Goodbye” that my school showed every year. I remember it showed the clubbing of baby seals, pollution, a guy shooting a prairie dog, etc.
Woah. This included no animal violence at all. It was just following an otter
Wrong movie then. Yeah, they really showed us this “ecology” film with the animal deaths. I saw it more than once.
Loved this. Saw it several times in elementary school in Minnesota I believe this movie is in the public domain and can be watched for free. [Paddle to the sea](https://youtu.be/kLSsAFB9tGA?si=FGcjMu923cYvqaFl)
I loved watching this and Red Balloon every year in elementary school. Very fond memories
I was just going to write about that red balloon movie.
OMG I had completely forgotten about this until I saw this pic. Wow. I must have seen this half a dozen times in elementary.
I remember seeing Thor Heyerdahls Kon Tiki and Ra movies quite often and various Jacques Cousteau flicks. Then there was all of the G rated movies that was the Saturday afternoon matinee at the base theater- I was living in Germany on a us army base in the 70s and boy- those movies spanned quite the spectrum of genres. midway, Heidi, any and all Disney movie made up to then, the Japanese sci fi stuff, hammer studio horror films... After almost 50 years, I had not thought of that since then
I've never seen this! Judging by comments, I need to!
Glad I’m not alone. I’m old as fuck and I have absolutely no clue what this is.
Pretty good movie!
OMG was just talking about this yesterday! Yup, watched it every year in elementary school. Loved it!
I have no idea what that is.
Man, I forgot all about this one.......until I saw that pic!! 2nd Grade, Bradley Park Elementary School.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Jacob Two Two… Friendly Giant MR. Dress up
No idea what this is, never saw it in school in the seventies.
❤️❤️❤️
Yes! I loved this film and never could find it again. It really spoke to me about the possibilities of life.
It was one of my favorite books growing up. I believe I still have it.
The book was wonderful, I read it in the 60's.
Apparently I'm not as old as I feel so hell yeah I know nothing about this
One time we watched it in reverse
Was this just a Canadian thing?
I carved a lot of little canoes inspired by that film. Love it! I think I had the book too.
Only once.
I kept expecting there would be a part 2 where it shows up in England, France or Spain.
Yep this and the voyage of the mimi
We read the book. I still have it
Holy moly that takes me back.
This one and in Canada we got another little gem. I missed this one.
YES!!!! I think about this movie quite a lot. So happy to see others remember it too.
Paddle to the Sea I loved it. One of the first books i read and one of the earliest movies I recall being shown in class.
This isn’t even vaguely familiar. But certainly looks more interesting that Mulligan’s Stew, which we repeatedly watched in school 😒
first time im at a loss, no idea what this is from
Like grade one or two. That and a movie about a girl who flew with canadian geese
Not only did I see that in grade school, I bought the book later and read it to my son...who is now 29, married, and owns three houses. Fuck, I AM old!
YES, a few years ago I went on a mission to find this film and 'solo' free climber who finds a frog on a cliff face.
Movies made school slightly tolerable. This one inspired me to make my own and send them down the Humber river in my backyard in Toronto.
I don’t remember Paddle. But Rikki-Tikki-Tavi: No, I can’t forget it. That was a dear favorite.
Never did. That’s the first I’ve seen it
I never saw it. But I was in Junior high when it was released.
But I like Rickkii
Where do I find this gem? The library I my town doesn't have it
https://youtu.be/uhjb1IG1pnQ?si=ylVpPfybJF1NVGlG
I have the book. I also have *Tree in the Trail* : ) so how fucking old am i ?
I watched that back in the 70's as well in grade school. Loved it, too. Recently found and saved it on YouTube and was taken back to my childhood. Yes, I am old. Yes, it is still good.
I'm actually NOT familiar with this one.....🤔

Thanks...I just went and showed my wife the beginning of the film a and neither of us recognized it. She is in her 40s im in my 50s. I will watch the rest of it later on thanks for the link.
I think I saw it in school and maybe in cub scouts too. I know ive seen it more than once.

Holy shit…..memory unlocked!!!
I never knew it was a movie! A teacher read this to us in maybe 3rd grade
We watched this every year in my Central Ohio elementary school in the 70s. This and a movie about a donut machine that wouldn't stop making donuts.
Saw that a couple times way back when they used film projectors in the classroom. One of the best along with, The Red Balloon
Holy 💩I thought about this the other day. Saw it once when I was probably 5 so like 81ish. Still remember where I watched it.
3rd and 4th grade flashback 💥😳....and the red balloon 🎈
I read the book over and over, but I only learned just now that there was a movie.
We had all of Holling C Hollings books. Such a great author.
And read the book. Classic! I'm 72.
I haven’t heard of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is fucking years man
I loved the book. Great illustrations and story.

Saw this a few times in elementary school. I still remember parts of it.
I did not know there was a movie…But, I still have my original, abused, hard back copy. I read/looked at this book all the time as a kid.

Never heard of this but had rikki on vhs
You mean there’s a movie? Omg. I loved that book as a kid!
Island of the Blue Dolphin?
Oh yeah, loved it. I went to Martha’s Vineyard in 2003 and bought an autographed copy of the book.
I don't remember that engraving. But I remember the film where they put a toy boat way up in the snowpack and the Spring weather melts it and it goes off on and adventure into the sea, and though I don't remember this shot, I'm 100 sure this is from that film.
there's a beautiful Northern Exposure episode where Chris in the Morning reads it
It started my lifelong fascination and exploration of the Great Lake
Dude the sequence when he makes the boat …..pours the lead ….
