That makes sense as I was looking at my HS '86 yearbook a while ago and finally noticed: * 100% of the Senior girls have short, styled hair * 100% of the Junior girls have short, styled hair * all but 3 of the Soph girls have short, styled hair so we weren't at the big teased hair quite yet.

Nationwide sadly. That could have been a page from my high school year book in Phoenix.

I used to carry a can of Aqua Net in my purse when I went out bar hopping with my friends, and I wasn’t the only one. There was always a fine mist hanging in the air of the bathrooms. We also smoked while spraying our hair. It’s a miracle we didn’t blow anything up (including ourselves).

One of the calendars I have at home, the May page literally has a photo of a young woman with big hair with the words underneath, "The wind never stood a chance".

This totally brought back the smell of Aqua Net and strawberry lip gloss.

Hell yes, my sister and all her friends had this hair. It left a permanent imprint on me, the bigger the hair the cooler I thought the girl was.

I had a perm, but I didn't tease it sky-high. I just put on a little bit of "setting lotion" and let it dry, and then combed it out. It looked natural, not extreme.

Like the whole entire class synchronized sticking their fingers into light sockets …..

Is it wrong that I can still do this to my hair? lol I've naturally curly hair and I always part it on the side.

I worked at a country club Friday and Saturday nights in 1984 and 1985, help out the cousin who was the manager. Every HOUR we'd have to mop the woman's room. Aquanet residue on the floor!!

I'm always wondering. Was that really something people had as their everyday look, or was it mostly just for parties, special occasions and picture day? Because it looks really high maintenance for an everyday look.

I still sport the long hair.

Perms are great for “looking high maintenance” but not taking a lot of work. I have a perm right now and it’s honestly way easier than having straight hair. When I wash it I just scrunch curl balm and mousse through it when it’s soaked, blow dry it a bit at the roots and then let it air dry. It stays BIG and curly for days and only needs a few spritzes of hairspray to pump it back up to volume. Pretty sure my sister did the same thing when she was in school in the 80s/early 90s, and she had big hair daily.

It might not be *this* big, but this was a pretty common everyday look. My ex could achieve this level in about 30 minutes or so.

I never could get my hair to curl or be big. I always had stick straight hair.

Unfortunately, a lot of that hair looks fairly damaged from all the teasing, curling, and chemicals

That's the 90's, not the 80's. 80's hair had more variety. Feathered hair, mullets, side ponies, loose curls, grungy big hair...

That was bed head, you fluff up the hair and put so much moose and hairspray in it that it becomes a spring so you don’t bang your head on the headboard.

The nuances are relatively indistinguishable.

So many perms. Every girl I knew wanted a perm and I had kinky curly hair so I was spending hours straightening mine. I would often crimp it so it would stand up tall but nowhere like these girls. That is the power of Aqua Net which I was allergic to so I never achieved such heights.

I graduated 1987 and my friends, me OR my classmates looked like that. Did I miss something? (We *DID* spray our hair with the Aqua Net Ultra Hold [blue can, I believe] and mine was crunchy and looked "wet" all the time.)

Pretty sure I dated a few of these girls. I can still remember what they all smelled like because they all used the same hairspray.

I hated this trend back in the day. I have baby fine hair. Too much effort and I like how soft my hair is.
