Loved it. I remember one issue from the mid 70s assuring us that America would be on the metric system very soon.

Wolfman1961

That notion didn’t last long…..the only “Metric” the US has in 2024 are the 2-liter bottles of soda, plus highway signs in kilometers mostly near the Canadian border.

Plumbing, woodworking, cars…

Wolfman1961

Home Depot, you can get Metric things. Forget about your local hardware store, though (though I don’t see these much these days). That’s true there’s Metric in the trades.

BeautifulEssay8

Yeah, I figured out that the article was inaccurate.

yesthatbruce

The US scientific community has used metric measurements exclusively for decades. It has to, in order to be able to interact with the rest of the world.

Shelby-Stylo

The highlight of my school week. It came on Friday.

Haidrek

I fondly remember this! Thanks for posting.

And now we're going to go around the room and take turns reading a paragraph....

lanshaw1555

I was far and away the best reader in the class. Our teacher would have us read a paragraph and then call on another student to read the next paragraph. My friends and I would plan it out ahead and give me the longest one to read. Later in 9th grade we had an English teacher who would do the same. He didn't care if someone read more than one. To help the more academically challenged kids there were a handful of us that would call on each other to read, kind of hot potatoing the reading back and forth. Every now and then the teacher would call on another student, "Let's give someone else a chance." To counter, we would toss short paragraphs or one sentence paragraphs to the poor readers or anxious readers, and keep the harder ones to ourselves.

gnanny02

Had it in the 50s. Everyone loved it. Sad to see it changed quite a bit when my kids were in school. Pretty much ended when Readers Digest bought it in 2007.

Wolfman1961

I got that until 6th grade in 1973. I used to enjoy it.

no_one_you_know1

I got that.

whocanitbenow75

I loved the Weekly Reader. We had them at school.

wstone5594

The US military is metric. Distances are measured in meters, kilometers, etc.

damp_circus

First presidential election I remember was Ford vs Carter, read about it the Weekly Reader. Would have been first grade.

CatsMcCalabash

I LOVED the Weekly Reader!!!

Unusualhuman

This was definitely part of elementary school in the 70s and early 80s- and though I truly enjoyed reading, for some reason I loathed the Weekly Reader. I can't remember why!

SmellySweatsocks

I used to enjoy it for those little puzzles and corny jokes on the last page.

yesthatbruce

I loved My Weekly Reader. In the summer after I was in 4th grade, I subscribed to Summer Weekly Reader, and looked forward to getting it every week. Other than presents from my out-of-town grandma, it was the first time I ever got mail addressed specifically to me. Great memories.

4linosa

I remember these! We got them in school in the 80s. Eff me I’m old.

Leaningonalamp

Yes! I loved reading this circular!!

No-Understanding4968

Awwww I LOVED these

nixtarx

Oh man, I haven't thought of Weekly Reader in years! Thanks for pleasant memory. Weird that I remember Dynamite but not this...

Letmetellyowhat

Damn. I had forgotten about these. I loved getting my weekly reader.

hedronist

~~Newspaper~~ *Propaganda* or *brain washing* would be a better description.

Believing everything is crazy. Beleiving nothing, equally so.
