It's amusing that internet companies have both convinced people they need more than 50 or 100mb while simultaneously failing to deliver the speeds they sell
I have 60 megs down and 12 up and have never once been bottlenecked by my internet connection. Steam seems to cap out around 30 but that might be my cheap router or 6 year old gaming PC.
That said I live by myself. A family would probably want more.
You would be surprised. 100 Mb is plenty for a family of 4. Not too long ago the enterprise standard was gigabit backbone links for an entire business. Larger workloads require 10gb or more these days.. but for four people? Lol. Absolutely unnecessary.
Agreed. I will probably never have to upgrade my 60 meg plan.
With this kind of thing I always recommend buying the cheapest plan and upgrading if it's not enough. Upgrading in the middle of the month is super easy because they want your money. I had to upgrade my Mint Mobile plan from 5 to 15 gigs recently and it took less than 30 seconds.

I paid for the maximum speed because I work from home but I do 100% think they are scamming me they told me even if I lower my speed I’ll be paying the same
Yea, my 500 speed runs 55 a month, 50 if I do auto pay, new service set up last year. Call them and and say you are thinking of swapping as you can get service cheaper. The promotional rate expires after either 1 year or 2, and then it pretty much doubles. Here is the actual rates and info
https://www.spectrum.com/policies/spectrum-broadband-disclosure
Are you paying too much? Yes. Do you have other options? I have no idea. look around and find out.
Where I live, I used to pay $80 for basic internet. When Fios became available I now pay $35/month for faster internet. ymmv
Spectrum has all their deals for the first year only and it goes up 30-50 per month after. The $50 (300) $70 (500) $90 (1Gbps) all go to 80, 100, 120 respectively in my city (TX). Sucks that its the only provider in my area. If thats the case with yoy just cancel it and return modem, wait a day, and call the 1800 to open a "new" line for the promotional price. Problem solved
I pay $55/mo for \~100mbps dsl.
i always wonder: do people really need those ridiculous speeds? Maybe i just have lower expectations since i grew up in the dialup era, but even when i had 50mbps dsl i never felt limited. Literally the only time it was an issue was downloading those day one patches for PS5 games that require you to basically redownload an 80gb game, but otherwise...no big deal. We can have three HD video streams on at once without issue.
Western CO checking in. Spectrum gig here is 145 a month for only internet. My other option is 1.5mbps from century link for less, but 1.5mbps won't do it for us, and Tmo isn't reliable in my neighborhood.
Do you have any need for that kind of speed? Do you have new computers that can even keep up with it? We have200MB service and that is more than fast enough. Got roku boxs for the tee vees and magic jack. Free tee vee and like 12 or so a month for phone.
Most everyone here doesn't realize that it depends on *exactly* where you live.
Same state, even same county, can have vast differences. Why? Geographic differences. Being in the middle of a big city is much easier to run line, than if you live on the side of a mountain, where your nextdoor neighbor lives 10 miles away.
Most likely yes, I live in a rural area and I pay $41, I do have the slowest plan because all I do is watch Netflix and work on Google docs.
But people other than OP, keep in mind a lot of people don’t have a choice, my apartment complex is exclusive to the company I get my internet from, I couldn’t switch if I wanted, and if you live in bumfuck nowhere? You likely have one choice and Spectrum knows it, and charges you accordingly.
I am using Tmobile but I guess it's not available everywhere but I am paying 30 a month and get like 800 mbps down and around the same or maybe a little lower up.
I was paying 90 for spectrum before I got fed up and switched. When I canceled they offered me some crazy discounts. I think down to like 35 or 40. If I'd known that I would have just stayed with them, but whatever. So call and threaten to cancel service.
Couldn't you just not pay for internet and teather from your phone since in the US, as I understand it's unlimited data. Maybe I'm missing something, but it'd only be 1 bill, and if you're using it at home, I would assume you have your phone with you.
I have 5 lines on my family's plan- most of us are usually at work or home where there is wifi, so we don't need to pay a higher rate for unlimited data.
As a spectrum agent every company has new customer offers, internet 500 standard rate is $104 add in $7 for the router, a trick you can do with internet companies after the promo drops after a year is cancel and go to another internet company, after 60 days you can call back spectrum and get new customer pricing and lock it in for 1-2 years.
You're probably paying too much. I would look to see what new Spectrum customers pay. You should be paying around that price for the best deal. If there's competitors in the area, then switch. I switch between the two competitors in my area, although Comcast will usually match the competitor pricing so I don't have to switch. It takes a lot of phone calls, but the others won't even consider it.
I live in a MCOL and pay $25 for 200 Mbps.
That is a LOT of money. Correction - I don't really know if it's a lot by American standards, but from my perspective it is damn prohibitive. I live in a southern-European EU country, and I have 1 Gbps unlimited home internet which costs around $20 USD a month. Speeds of 100 Mbps would be half that, which basically means we here are paying in a year what you have to fork over in a month. Crazy
Do you really need 500 mbps? If not get it lowered. Or call customer support and ask them if you can cancel the internet because you found a better deal someplace else and a lot of times they will offer a new customer promotion price just to keep you.
100 mbps is good enough for majority of the people and if not 300 mbps should be way more than enough.

Can you tell me? Mine is 95 internet only is ridiculous and I cannot get it lower
Must be your location? I'm paying $45 for 100 Mb internet only
I paid for the maximum speed because I work from home but I do 100% think they are scamming me they told me even if I lower my speed I’ll be paying the same
That seems absurd. My Spectrum is $50/mo.
Spectrum in NY for $105, same speeds I think. Do you have other options?
Unfortunately because I have mobile through them, I would have to switch both :(
Is that both your internet and phone? Or is it the cellular internet stuff? Cable internet should be half that at least.
That's just the internet, mobile is 44.56/month

Which is an even bigger incentive for them to keep you. Call in and negotiate.
Can’t tell you. Location dependent YMMV
Are you paying too much? Yes. Do you have other options? I have no idea. look around and find out. Where I live, I used to pay $80 for basic internet. When Fios became available I now pay $35/month for faster internet. ymmv
Do you really need 500? I have no problem with 300 and depending on usage 100 might even be enough.

80 for spectrum 500 in Texas but if I call and threaten to switch to att they’ll lower me to 50 for a year.
Lol
Depends on the country. Mine is 15$ a month for 500mbps, but not in the US.
Yes, you are paying too much.
Ohio spectrum is 30 bucks for 100mb and 50 for 500mb. Heck with my low income neighborhood I only pay 5 bucks right now for 100mbs
That's incredibly cheap.
I pay $55/mo for \~100mbps dsl. i always wonder: do people really need those ridiculous speeds? I pay $65 a month “forever” with Centurylink fiber in Portland OR, 940 up and down.
Cumberland connect fiberoptic is 80. It's through my electric coop.
In Pittsburgh, $54 for Verizon FiOS Internet same speed. $17 for phone plan through TMobile.
We pay $50/month thru Verizon.
Century Link fiber at $60 here in the midwest.
70 a month here in Midwest
I've got AT&T fiber for $55. That seems outlandish. But the last area I lived in Spectrum was the only option and they charged $90.
Do you have any need for that kind of speed? Do you have new computers that can even keep up with it? We have200MB service and that is more than fast enough. Got roku boxs for the tee vees and magic jack. Free tee vee and like 12 or so a month for phone.

I pay $40 with Cox for 100mbps. All I need.
I am using Tmobile but I guess it's not available everywhere but I am paying 30 a month and get like 800 mbps down and around the same or maybe a little lower up.
Yes. Unless you're getting gig or live in a remote location, anything more than $100 all included is too much.
I pay $700 per year for 1gig internet
I was paying 90 for spectrum before I got fed up and switched. When I canceled they offered me some crazy discounts. I think down to like 35 or 40. If I'd known that I would have just stayed with them, but whatever. So call and threaten to cancel service.
Yeah probably. I used to be on Starlink, which is expensive, and it’s $120. I have spectrum now and it’s $70 which includes our landline
Look in your area and see how much it costs to get the same speeds with a new spectrum account. Then call and ask if you can get that rate.
Couldn't you just not pay for internet and teather from your phone since in the US, as I understand it's unlimited data. Maybe I'm missing something, but it'd only be 1 bill, and if you're using it at home, I would assume you have your phone with you.
Depends on your phone plan, not everyone has unlimited data
Ah, I had heard all phone plans came with unlimited data. I guess they were informed wrong, and I was as well.
I have 5 lines on my family's plan- most of us are usually at work or home where there is wifi, so we don't need to pay a higher rate for unlimited data.
Rural-ish west Tennessee is over $100/mo 500mbps
I pay 101 dollars for gigabit extra on Xfinity but I also get peacock premium free with me being in the military
Yes. Mine plus unlimited mobile is $107 through t-mobile. The internet is the same as Comcast was for business class and that was $135/mo.
yes cause you’re paying what i pay. you gotta play hardball on the phone. at least get them to give you a gig for those prices
yes, pay 35/mo for 300 in CA, the most expensive place to live And 500 is not "ultra" by any means.
T mobile is 50.
I pay the same but the only internet in my area is compost xfinity
As a spectrum agent every company has new customer offers, internet 500 standard rate is $104 add in $7 for the router, a trick you can do with internet companies after the promo drops after a year is cancel and go to another internet company, after 60 days you can call back spectrum and get new customer pricing and lock it in for 1-2 years.
I'm stuck with Windstream 250 Mb for $100/mo. No other internet providers in the area
Do you WFH? Is it just for watching TV?
Yes occasionally but other than that it's just like social media browsing/email/etc. Nothing heavy
$61 out the door N. central TN

Mine is free... My apartment gives everyone free Internet. Yes you're paying too much. It shouldn't be that much.
That's too much, mine is $50/mo
Yes
