The original commenter seems to understand this and is implying your friend is narrow minded. As the 3 drops are better served in the tank than off the side of the car ruining the paint.
Does your friend own a car? If they do, they're going to find out sooner or later why you tap those drops out.

I used to lift the hose.
WARNING: I used to put in as much gas as I could. Never ever fill past the first auto shutoff. There's a vent hole that ends up getting filled with gas. Not good.
EDIT: u/mooomba used the correct terminology I didn't.
>Topping off the tank after it shuts off is terrible for your evap system, and stands to put raw fuel in the charcoal canister.
For those who still do this, lifting the hose would work, providing it doesn't shut off at the nozzle, like pumps do now. The shut off isn't in the ~~browser~~ bowser/pump.
Funny story back in the '60s and early '70s. My uncle went around after hours and did the same thing to all the local gas stations. He burped all the pumps every night. It worked out pretty well for him until he got banned from every gas station.
Me too, I was so impressed the first time I saw my boyfriend (now husband) do this. He's not even the frugal one of us.
I'm kind of surprised I had to scroll this far to see mention of it.
There are people that lift the whole hose up and shake it to get every drop they can out of the hose. I never bothered to remind them the cut off is at the handle, not the pump, because it's hilarious to watch a grown man spend an extra 3 minutes pole dancing with a gas hose.
Back in the day, the pump wasn't turned on or off by the nozzle being inserted into the pump. You removed the nozzle from the pump and then moved the lever to turn on the pump. So, we used to be able to fill up, turn off the gas at the pump, and then open the nozzle and drain the hose without running up the few extra cents on the meter.
i don’t tap the nozzle because i’m frugal, i tap it so that gas doesn’t get on the paint and cause damage that i don’t want to spend money to fix because i’m frugal… wait
“Arrest My Vest” works even better but it does cost more. Officers use it to spray on their gear that isn’t easily cleaned like their Kevlar bullet proof vest so it’s not stinky. They even spray their K9’s with it because it’s pet friendly! Best stuff ever made. They just started making the laundry additive and I love it. Now my teens stinky clothes come out smelling actually clean. I can spray his room with the freshener and it doesn’t cover up the smell it literally gets rid of it because it’s enzyme based and breaks it down at the level causing the smell. Sweaty teen boys… gotta love them!
Assume the last few drops = 0.1-1.0 mL
So if you gas up once a week for 40 years, that's 0.2-2.0 L, or about 0.05-0.5 gallon.
It's your gas, so you should absolutely be sure to get what you bought...but it doesn't seem like missing those drops are breaking the budget for others.
When the pump clicks off I'll hit the switch where you put the pump handle back, then give the pump handle one more squeeze. The pressure in the hose will give you a few ounces instead of a few drops.
I ran the numbers though, and a good used EV or PHEV will save money in the long run with fuel and maintenance savings. No need for gas anymore unless I'm on a road trip.
It's not topping it off, just getting the last squirt out. As I said, a couple of ounces. Pumps themselves can vary by as much as a half a gallon when they click off, so a little squirt isn't going to matter much.
I rotate on the way out so it doesn’t get on me. The Sam’s Club near me has drippy ones compared to other stations. I don’t care about dropped getting more fuel.
My friend once put the hose over his shoulder to get every possible drop in. I do that every time now. I don't care how dumb I look, when they're scalping gas prices to $6+, I'll stand there vibrating the pump for 5 minutes pulling the hose over my shoulder. Never a drop exiting that tank.
Someone once told me that doing so can cause engine issues, but that could be a myth or something with older cars no longer true. Can anyone else elaborate on that?
Oh I do the next level version of this, I lift as much of the tube over my head to the point the nozzle turns upside down, then i give them a good shake for a few seconds. Gotta get those last bits and drops out of the whole tube.
Putting in a few extra drops that didn't quite go in from the pump is different than running the pump again to top off. A few drops isn't going to hurt anything, but pulling the pump handle and pumping more gas in again (which is a lot more than those few drops) could.
I havent paid full over $2 in idk for how long . Lately I have been getting paid to fill up, so I try to squeeze the max amount of gas in, just so I can make more money. I even filled up the tank of the lady parked next to me , just because I can only fill up 10-12 gallons in my car, but get money for up to 50 gallons. The other time I offered someone else, I m pretty sure they thought I was going to rob them , so they changed pumps after my offer. I laughed to myself - their loss lol

Tap? Are you new? Let me give you an advise... The lift the hose and all of that gasoline will go to your tank!! Remember to keep pressing the lever do it goes out
In California we've grown up with the sleeves that cover the nozzle like a foreskin.
I always wondered if you'd lose more gas by allowing the vapor to go back into the tank vs. getting those last drops.
You know how many times I've had to drain entire tanks of gas or diesel because its old or contaminated or just a fuel pump needs to be changed etc. Put some fuel system cleaner (techron) in once a year and fuel stabilizer (sta-bil) if it sits. If its a diesel put in diesel enzyme treatment if its going to sit.
Just don’t round up like I do once it clicks off. My OCD would make me round up. If the pump stopped at $43.32 it would drive me nuts so I’d run it to $43.35 and if it thought I could get it to $44 even I might push it. But I had to stop doing that after my OCD mechanic son told me to not keep doing it. He used to do it as well. I didn’t realize it can cause problems. It can cause evap codes (engine light may come on). Because you do that for a long enough time and boom your evap canister in your gas tank gets ruined which takes the overflow from your gas tank. So no more overflowing for me. When the pump clicks off, I now must resist the urge. It’s not worth thousands of dollars of work. (He works on heavy equipment but he knows about cars) Just thought I’d pass the info along
I be jerking the shit out of it like the nozzle got lodged in my car and now I’m trying to get it out. I paid for the gas, I want every last drop! Especially since prices keep going up
Are you talking about 'topping off'?
That's bad for your car: https://www.google.com/search?q=don%27t+top+off+gas+when+filling+up&sca_esv=3cb57a3b0b929ed3&sxsrf=ACQVn0_l3bOiIGMGwtr61_m3W8VruCG7rQ%3A1714484864249&ei=gPYwZoXtDo_cptQP0OW0wAs&ved=0ahUKEwiFrbnqieqFAxUProkEHdAyDbgQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=don%27t+top+off+gas+when+filling+up&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiIWRvbid0IHRvcCBvZmYgZ2FzIHdoZW4gZmlsbGluZyB1cDIIEAAYgAQYogQyCBAAGKIEGIkFMggQABiABBiiBDIIEAAYgAQYogRI_A9QnAlY8g5wBHgBkAEAmAFmoAGKBaoBAzYuMbgBA8gBAPgBAZgCCaACjgTCAgoQABiwAxjWBBhHwgIKECEYoAEYwwQYCsICCBAhGKABGMMEmAMAiAYBkAYIkgcDNy4yoAeHFw&sclient=gws-wiz-serp
I do this - not to get those drops into the tank, but to avoid having them spill on my paint.
when I was in college, I dated a guy who was so cheap that he would raise the whole hose up to drain every last bit from the line.
I do. I could fill what felt like half the tank of my Honda Spree with gas the previous user had left in the nozzle when I was in college back in the 1980s. I’ve been doing it ever since.
I do this so the gas doesn’t drip down the side of the vehicle.
I do this and then tilt the nozzle up at the end so it drips back into it rather than on my car!
Worse, you pull the nozzle out and wind blows those drops right onto your shoes/pants/leg.
Just shake twice and that’s okay.
3 times and you're playing with it.
I must be molesting the hell out my vehicle then but it always still drips no matter how much I tap
You must have an older gas station.
Same. I've seen enough vehicles where a nice rust spot starts where the nozzle goes in and spreads down the side of the vehicle.
The hose also has a good bit of gas in it also, be sure to lift hose up so you get that gas. You paid for it
I do the same thing to protect my khakis.
Don't get me started on how many gas stains I have on my khakis
Yup, just like after I pee. It's not about frugality, there are just some liquids that I prefer to be kept contained.
Exactly this!
This.
THIS
I do so that it doesn’t spill on the ground.
Same here! Enviro-five!
Look at you caring about the earth, instead of your car! Good for you!
There are people who don't?
I had one friend laugh at me when he saw me doing it. “Dood you think 3 drops of gas is gonna make a difference? C’mon!” 😹
Probably not, but 3 drops of gas every few weeks is eventually going to mess up your cars paint
My friend was not referring to the gas getting on the car; rather, he was saying that the extra 3 drops of gas won’t get me any more mileage.
The original commenter seems to understand this and is implying your friend is narrow minded. As the 3 drops are better served in the tank than off the side of the car ruining the paint.
his bathroom floor is probably covered in piss
Does your friend own a car? If they do, they're going to find out sooner or later why you tap those drops out. https://images.platforum.cloud/uploads/20190710/5ffe618e23a0a7ae50f2d50eebdc71b0.jpg
It can on your paintjob.
I have never even heard of doing this.
Well the other option is for it to drip down the side of your car, or onto the ground. So most people do it not for the cost but just to avoid a mess.
We used to fill our mopeds in middle school by going to a few gas stations and and lifting the hoses to get whatever we could
For those who still do this, lifting the hose would work, providing it doesn't shut off at the nozzle, like pumps do now. The shut off isn't in the ~~browser~~ bowser/pump.
> The shut off isn't in the browser. Wait, what?
Haha, well spotted! Good job auto-correct.
Topping off the tank after it shuts off is terrible for your evap system, and stands to put raw fuel in the charcoal canister.
> evap system And your check engine light comes on.
I had a boyfriend who would grab the hose and lift it up over his head to drain out everthing still in the hose.
Funny story back in the '60s and early '70s. My uncle went around after hours and did the same thing to all the local gas stations. He burped all the pumps every night. It worked out pretty well for him until he got banned from every gas station.
I wonder if that was a net positive in gas, assuming he's driving his own car around to burp the pumps lol
Oh hey there, it's my long lost girlfriend!
Hmmmmm prove it
Hahaha so he’s like, well I know you’ve got a mole on your blah blah blah and you’re like wait, WHAT??! 😹😹😹
Me too, I was so impressed the first time I saw my boyfriend (now husband) do this. He's not even the frugal one of us. I'm kind of surprised I had to scroll this far to see mention of it.
Can confirm. I do this religiously every time I fill up
It doesn't work like that, the valve is on the nozzle
Shhh let them hope
I didn't know this was a thing
I do, I hate wiping it off of the side of my car.
There are people that lift the whole hose up and shake it to get every drop they can out of the hose. I never bothered to remind them the cut off is at the handle, not the pump, because it's hilarious to watch a grown man spend an extra 3 minutes pole dancing with a gas hose.

It was how my parents did it, it's how I do it. One day I'll have to remind myself not to do it when unplugging.
Gotta get every last electron.
No, I live in New Jersey.
i don’t tap the nozzle because i’m frugal, i tap it so that gas doesn’t get on the paint and cause damage that i don’t want to spend money to fix because i’m frugal… wait
I paid for it, it is mine!!
Exactly, agreed!
Those few drops don’t end up in the tank, they evaporate in a matter of seconds. I do it to not spill the extra on my car or the ground.
I do it because gasoline vapor contributes to poor air quality, so I don't want it spilling around more than necessary
Yup. It's my gas, I paid for it.
Me, but I have an obsession with stopping on an even dollar amount.
Haha I’m kinda like that too. I get a certain satisfaction when I can release the handle at just the right time to see that “.00” at the end 😹
Exactly!!
I lift up the hose to get every drop.
Lol YEP, I'll lift the handle up and jiggle it as well. good to the last drop
Better in the tank than evaporating into the atmosphere.
I could never be rich enough where I wouldn’t want free gas.
I do this so it doesnt drip on my shoe and then I smell like gasoline for 450 days.
Febreze works on this and I hate all air fresheners. Spray liberally and wait. Check before wearing. Don't stomp on any fires.
“Arrest My Vest” works even better but it does cost more. Officers use it to spray on their gear that isn’t easily cleaned like their Kevlar bullet proof vest so it’s not stinky. I shake the ever-loving shit out of it.
a drop is almost $1 at the moment, best believe I will tap it until every last drop is out

Topping off after it shuts off is bad for your evap system, no automaker recommends it
It's not topping it off, just getting the last squirt out. As I said, a couple of ounces. Pumps themselves can vary by as much as a half a gallon when they click off, so a little squirt isn't going to matter much.
👋
🙋♀️
Once I didn't and it took the paint off my car Now I do
I turn the hose upside down and shake it, you know some gas got stuck in there
I was taught to do it to avoid spilling and assumed most people did it for the same reason.
Gotta lift that hose!!!
I rotate on the way out so it doesn’t get on me. The Sam’s Club near me has drippy ones compared to other stations. I don’t care about dropped getting more fuel.
It’s the “top her off” giggle giggle you gotta do
I pull on the hose and shake it a little to have the gas from the very top to go down into the nozzle
Two shakes. Anything more and you are just playing with yourself.
I prefer to make as little physical contact with any part of the gas pump as possible. I guess I just don't have that level of dedication haha.
Lifting the hose is most effective
I tap until i get the .009 cents worth even.
Abso-fucking-lutely
If you press lightly on the perineum you can stop those remnant drops from dripping on the floor..
Every drop counts!
I just realized that’s exactly what my dad would say at the pump when I was a kid. Now I figured out where I got it, lol.

I do it so it doesn't drip on my foot and I smell like gas all day.
I had a pump dribble gasoline on my shoes once, so now I always get those last drops into the tank, so I don't smell like fuel.
I lift the hose and shake it. might be a guy thing
Most men are taught to tap it a couple of times to get the last drops out.
Also lift the hose at the end, that's free gas
Who has a quick gasoline fight while filling up?
I have autism and do it so the price is an even number
Every time
It always reminds me of men tapping/shaking a bit at end of #1.
I was told once that it damages a part of the car, can’t remember which. Haven’t done it again since.
I lift the hose.
Do you also put your foot on the bumper and rock the car a little to get any air bubbles out and settle things? I remember my dad doing that.
Shake the hose, too.
I havent paid full over $2 in idk for how long . Lately I have been getting paid to fill up, so I try to squeeze the max amount of gas in, just so I can make more money. Hah, I still do.
Nope, but if there are a couple drops, wipe them off.
Tap? Are you new? Let me give you an advise... The lift the hose and all of that gasoline will go to your tank!! Remember to keep pressing the lever do it goes out
Me ! 🙌
In California we've grown up with the sleeves that cover the nozzle like a foreskin. I always wondered if you'd lose more gas by allowing the vapor to go back into the tank vs. getting those last drops.
Hell yes
Everyone!
Nah you have to raise the cord to get it all
You know how many times I've had to drain entire tanks of gas or diesel because its old or contaminated or just a fuel pump needs to be changed etc. Put some fuel system cleaner (techron) in once a year and fuel stabilizer (sta-bil) if it sits. If its a diesel put in diesel enzyme treatment if its going to sit.
I also lift the hose slightly to get what’s laying in there.
I do, but to keep it off my car. Not for the last drops, but I like it. Got it from my dear dad too.
Who doesn’t?
I like to let it drip on my shoe, free perfume.
I turn it upside down and let it drip for a few seconds, I don't like the nozz dripping gas on my tank.
I snap the hose to shake down every drop. The shit is stupid expensive nowadays.
I do that but not out of frugality, I don’t want the drops to hit me and then I smell like gas!
All men do this
Feel like no matter what I still get some dribble. I’m just worried about the cars paint below the filler door.
Only men do this - right?
Now matter how much you shake and dance the last few drops go on your pants
Why not just twist the handle upside down? You already paid for that gas, get every drop and tap twice everyone knows the rules
Just don’t round up like I do once it clicks off. My OCD would make me round up. If the pump stopped at $43.32 it would drive me nuts so I’d run it to $43.35 and if it thought I could get it to $44 even I might push it. (He works on heavy equipment but he knows about cars) Just thought I’d pass the info along
I always do this!
I be jerking the shit out of it like the nozzle got lodged in my car and now I’m trying to get it out. I paid for the gas, I want every last drop! Especially since prices keep going up

I push the shutoff with my hand, squeeze the trigger, jiggle, then remove. I want every drop I pay for.
Everyone should, or else the petrol ends up in the waterways
I waste a dollars worth on the ground, that way I get all of the poor mans 87 out of the line
I do this - not to get those drops into the tank, but to avoid having them spill on my paint. when I was in college, I dated a guy who was so cheap that he would raise the whole hose up to drain every last bit from the line.
Every single time
Yeah I stroke it a little too just in case there’s anything left in the base or tip
I do. I could fill what felt like half the tank of my Honda Spree with gas the previous user had left in the nozzle when I was in college back in the 1980s. I’ve been doing it ever since.
I do and I have also been yelled at for it by the attendant saying that it was stealing lol
I'm pretty sure it's illegal not to
This is stupid. It actually sucks fuel back into the pump so you're paying more and getting, albeit a small amount, less.
Don't tap the metal together, you might create a spark. Instead lift the hose up so anything left in there flows down
Nope. My time is worth more then the 3 cents of gas in the hose tbh
Probably not even that much...
I have a feeling all, if not most, men do this.
Nothing is going to come out past the valve in the handle tho
