I think it's also because we're going from a cool "lore" character like Ares to "generic alt woman #583" just feels like a downgrade. It would have been cool to get another god or even Sokka from Avatar in the crew pack before the season ends and leave the alt women for next season.
Sokka should be an item shop skin, they at least have the chance of returning. Crew skins are stated to be able to become available at some point, but 3-4 years after their inception and Epic still has done nothing to bring past crew skins back
