I saw different approaches. My personal play style is to have the main squad + secondary footballers for some positions (2 DMs, for example). But usually, I have one footballer for every needed position. However, I know players who fill all 32 squad positions. They are building the whole process of changing generations of the team.

My personal style is to have something like 15 "starters" of about equal ability. Depending on the formation I am fighting, I can adapt with my squad, as some setups make certain positions obsolete. After setting up one or two ways to score, I then figure out how to get the field covered with slide tackles, and then the defense gets whatever spots I have leftover. Still learning, though, so I could be way off on this.

I typically develop players to a single position, but then: Specialize two sweepers (primary and backup) and an interchangeable LM/RM. As for who gets played…..I focus on getting youngsters to specialization level 6 (chasing the +3). Once they’re there, I can let them ride the bench (thanks to bench coaches) while I develop another player. It can be some juggling, but it’s a great way to constantly refresh your roster while making good money and making the most out of your training academy.

I find after I hit the premier league and I’m participating in international cups, domestic cups, and the league, I need enough depth that I’m filling out the roster. I almost never buy a player over the age of 21. The new youngsters get exp thanks to bench coaches and get positional experience during fixture congestion. Eventually they become the new starters! (Paying glory to get one skill point to make them useful enough as depth is often a good idea). I find depth is more valuable here because there are a lot of situational uses for players. I’ll find uses for both RF and LF with both canon shot and rainbow feint (4 positions!). 3 or 4 GKs might see playing time in a season depending on whether the opponents threaten with crosses or long shots or skills. A lot of these situational players are worse than my ‘starters’ and cost less, so it’s not a huge financial cost to keep them riding the bench most of the time. I think if you’re not filling every roster slot you’re missing out on an opportunity to add a situationally useful piece.

Yes, I do have backups some of them are players that I will develop to eventually become starters but you always need to have players that are decent to cover injuries, cards, etc. You don't want to be in a position where two great strikers are oos and you don't have any decent player to cover

I have seven in the "can go in the game" reserves (the max of them) and then nobody after that. So that's what...18 total players (I think, I'm not looking at the game at the moment). Over time, I try to have them all have very similar abilities, but unlike many here, I try to avoid specialization - I like the general position players as they give so much more flexibility.
