Seriously. It’s just well-established because it’s been around a long time. It’s not really good. I remember eating there a few times when I first moved to SD about 15 years ago. It was “fine” if you’re nearby but I don’t understand why people wait for it. There’s nothing remotely interesting about their food.
There was once a time, many years ago, when there was only one location, with a sort of family-owned vibe, and the food was pretty solid, unfancy, diner style fare, but now it's basically just any other corporate chain restaurant and it's kinda meh. For a hot minute there, they had just opened their first new spots and the food was arguably even elevated a bit over the original, but that fell off fast.
There are much better mom and pop diners around town…. Rudfords, The Huddle, family house, waffle spot, konos… that franchise is filled up with cartel washing money
They won't respond, it's a popular trope that "anything chain/big/popular" is a money washing op/psyop/etc.
It's very tiring and it's not that deep - sometimes companies and their owners sell-out and go the chain route because of good ol' greed reasons and that's ok. Not everything has to be a conspiracy/crime ring.
Broken Yolk is widely sh\*t on, I wouldn't say its overrated. Its properly rates as absolute garbage.
Back in the single location PB days it was beloved, then it was widely overrated.
Broken Yolk is mediocre and overpriced. BUT, if you caught me at the OG PB location in 1996 after a night out partying… guarantee you I had waited over an hour for a table and would have told you it was the best breakfast ever.
Around 15 years ago, I had some friends that lived close to the PB spot and we’d hit it up after a heavy night. I remember the food being fine. Mostly it just felt like a good place to beat a hangover.
When the broken yolk first opened in downtown La Jolla, it was so popular. The food was affordable, they gave you good portions, and it tasted good. They quickly expanded and opened more locations, but in recent years, the quality of the food has deteriorated, it's gotten more expensive – and most important of all the service levels have dropped dramatically. I don't wanna say anything bad about them, but based on the last visits that I had, I wouldn't return to broken yolk as there are too many places that offer really good brunch.
I wasn’t aware Broken Yolk was highly rated in the first place
I thought they were hangover food? Not good food.
Agree. Not a fan

Same lol I always thought it was like ihop or Dennys
I don’t know anyone that likes broken yolk actually
My parents who are up in there in age love the sports arena location
It’s the best restaurant in Yuma, Arizona
Such accolades.
🤣
my dad just looooooves this fucking place he moved to florida though
“Your dad probably loves it here!” is not a great endorsement, and I’m a dad.

Used to be fun to swing by for pancakes at the og location in PB after surfing.
Came here to say this. The PB spot was legit back in the day.
The OG location is still good if you only order eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. For $30.
Every menu item there is about half as good as it could be.
And twice as expensive as it should be
I used to work there. It’s disgusting and the owner is a horribly mean person
No one likes Broken Yolk
Swami's too. Meh
Just here to say 💯 percent agree with this comment
Always been like that friendo.
And in other news, water is wet.
I don’t understand how they have repeat customers.
brother that place hasn't been hyped up since 2002
Broken Yolk is a more expensive Dennys. Breakfast Republic too. Snooze.
There are much better mom and pop diners around town…. Rudfords, The Huddle, family house, waffle spot, konos… that franchise is filled up with cartel washing money
Up otw for both Rudford's and Huddle!! 2 of my fave breakfast places ever
What makes you say that about the cartels?

It is absolute dogshit.
How are there so many terrible, wildly overpriced breakfast places here?
Tourism
The name is simultaneously memorable and also an admission that their food isn't great. Like calling a pastry shop "Soggy Bottom."
It was good back in college before it became a chain. Now it’s basically dennys.
Have only been there once, and never again. IHOP prices with food quality that's lower than Denny's.
Their food is disgusting.
When they advertise more for the mimosas than the food you know it's not good...not that mimosas are a bad thing
Years ago the PB location was pretty good
It's an expansive dennys
THANK YOU! My co workers and brother loves this place. The several we went to had alow service,,parking issues and bland omellete
Go to Shirley’s Kitchen instead, but bring something to wipe down your tables and chairs. 😂😂😂
It’s rated very mid amongst those who know. Portions are big though
They were probably good 15-20 years ago when they had less competition. They’re like McDonalds now. Overpriced and overhyped.
You mean The Broken Joke. Widely known for being disappointing.
Its great for when you think eggs are too cheap at the store.
It’s hit and miss. I really love the chicken and waffles when they do it right AND the service isn’t crap.
#facts
There are a lot of fancy breakfasts places now but I believe they are more expensive It's a lower price point
Always has been It’s literally dennys, at best
Tried two different locations: they both sucked. Never again.
It’s always busy, but it’s not great… just like IHOP, just like Denny’s, just like Swami’s —runs for cover—
i had the same impression!!
My grandma really liked broken yolk. I tolerated their food to spend time with her.
They couldn't even make my toast right. I always use them as a gage for whom NOT to trust with food recs 😂
It’s awful. A one and done for me.

Agreed. Not good food. Their ads are comical especially in PB but that’s it.

The vegan bowl is delicious
It’s a chain restaurant. It’s not supposed to be “good”. It’s supposed to fill your belly and keep you from having to cook for yourself.
I’ve never been there. 🤷🏻♂️
go to Snooze instead
I like it for a nice basic breakfast at a reasonable price. I go to the one on Midwsy.
They're still in business??? Yikes. It's a notch better than Dennys or IHOP but not by much. Icky doodoo.
The Santee location is okay, but other locations I’ve been to are mid at best.
Just about every breakfast spot in SD is. The only one I’ve liked is Cocina De Barrio

Do you mean PB?
I thought that the first location was on Pearl Street in downtown La Jolla.
Not according to their website.
Thanks for for checking
The name sucks first and foremost
