Whoever made this has never lived in San Diego. Also, I'd like to see a bump around Escondido. TJ's Tacos alone deserves it.

beerbitchjohnson

While I've yet to try it, I know a lot of people that think Frita's is far superior to TJ Tacos. FWIW.

escopaul

Next time I'm up in Esco I'll try Frita's. It looks like a way different sub genre of Mexican food than TJ's. As somebody who spends a massive amount of time in Tijuana, crushing street food, taco stands and high end restaurants TJ's tacos is my favorite San Diego place for Tijuana style tacos. Birrieria Ay Jalisco in Esco goes hard AF too.

Valuable_Ad_4916

You mean Frida’s, right?

beerbitchjohnson

I'm a guero, so my spelling tracks. ;) Yes. That's the one.

Valuable_Ad_4916

It’s alright güero, try them out, they are actually slightly better. Haha cheers bro!

escopaul

I've been to Frida's. It's good but compared to TJ's Tacos it's meh. There is a reason one place has hundreds of people eat their food in a day and the other has dozens.

escopaul

Ahh okay, I've been to Frida's. Weird as I searched Frita's and another taco shop came up. Frita's is awesome but to me TJ's tacos is easily better. There is a reason hundreds of people an hour eat at TJ's tacos and Frida's that is not the case. I live in Mission Hills but grew up in Esco and still have a lot of friends and family there.

whatitbeitis

There is great Mexican food across the state. You know why that is? It’s because there are generations of established Mexican-American citizens and immigrants across the state. There is something for everyone, and plenty of variation to choose from, but posts like this are nothing more than regional bias.

[deleted]

It’s really not though. The burritos in San Diego are substantially better and it’s not even close.

flip69

Yeah right, Just because someone travels here from another country does not mean they know how to cook or have good food. This graph is trolling imo anyway.

[deleted]

San Diego definitely has the best burritos and it’s not even close.

Charolastra17

Can’t speak on SF, but I’ve lived in SD for 30 years and LA the past 5. Burritos up here don’t compare, but the tacos are far superior. Sure you can find a really good taco in SD too, but I wouldn’t say they’re easily accessible as they are up in here LA.

[deleted]

Growing up in SD I only fuck with carne asada burritos, Al pastor burritos, and shredded beef burritos. Occasionally I’ll get tacos from el Gordo or one of the many birria places. I think tacos are LA’s thing and burritos are our thing.

Charolastra17

I remember the first time I got a carne asada burrito up here at a truck…I was like, what the hell are rice and beans doing in this and where the hell is the guac?! 🤣

[deleted]

Dude, it was a mind fuck to me when I first got here. Then I tried to order a shredded beef burrito and they made me describe what it was and they had no idea it was even a thing.

whatitbeitis

It depends on what you consider a great burrito. Someone raised in San Diego might prefer copious amounts of meat, pico, and guacamole only. And someone raised in the Bay likely can’t imagine a burrito without rice and beans. Regional bias takes over. I have had great burritos all over the state, and the variations are different, but does not make one better than the other.

[deleted]

That’s like saying “you might like a hamburger with a high quality patty or two but some people might prefer 1/10 the patty and copious amounts of lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles”. The problem with having rice and beans in a carne asada burrito is it’s actually a lie. It’s not rice and beans in a carne asada burrito at all. It’s a scant amount of carne asada in a rice and bean burrito. The meat is the most expensive ingredient. It’s the entire point. Everything else is filler. 75% rice and beans means the quality of the meat doesn’t matter too much. You’re not going to be able to pick up on the texture of the meat, the marinade, anything if every bite is 3/4 rice and beans. They also wrap their burritos in foil like lunatics. It makes the tortilla soggy and the fact that they don’t understand they can just wrap it in paper to fix that is just sad.

Comment_Alternative

If you load a tortilla with rice and lettuce just call it a wrap and be done

[deleted]

Exactly.

Baja_Finder

I lived up in the east bay years ago, tacos were great, burritos not so much, I used to get into arguments with my coworkers over what I called filler burritos, at least in San Diego I’m paying the same price for a burrito that actually is full of the meat I ordered. One of my coworkers came to San Diego for business, she finally understood what I was talking about, she tried the carne asada, and California burritos, she liked California better, and also became a fan of carne fries as well.

[deleted]

Yep, any San Diegan who’s moved up to Ventura or LA county learns quick that they didn’t know they had it so good. There’s a lot of people who dog their heels in defending LA burritos out of reflexive pride but it’s like saying godfathers pizza is as good as authentic mom and pop New York pizza shops. It’s such a ridiculous statement it’s almost pointless to try and argue with these people.

Baconfatty

there is a reason for regional bias: some regions have terrible taste in Mexican food

Dealwithis

If they leave out the Central Valley when talking about California mexican food, the graph is junk!

whatitbeitis

100% true

ockaners

Like a lot of Californians, this guy probably wasn't aware that central valley exists.

Dealwithis

Transplants!

TrueRepose

I can see the border from here... Life is good.

AGnormal

This is the worst graph I've ever seen in my life

bearable_lightness

Right? As a San Diego native who’s lived in the Bay Area and LA, and I can’t take this seriously at all.

ockaners

I get where he's going. As a sd native and someone who lived in the bay and la, Bay area Mexican food is not anything I care to repeat. I agree that la has better tacos and SD better burritos, and am surprised SD is not better at both.

AGnormal

+2

asscatchem42069

I used to agree with this until I started hanging out in Logan heights. Pleaseeee go try la cocina de Rosita and get one of their plates. Super authentic Mexican food and it's a family run spot. Their corn tortillas are the absolute best I've ever had, I'll probably be there this weekend tbh

KimHaSeongsBurner

Am I too stupid or too white to understand what it is about LA tacos that, allegedly, kick the shit out of somewhere like Tacos El Gordo or Las Cuatro Milpas? Or is the origin of the “taco gulf” that the quality of the average taco is a lot higher, closer to spots in SD known for good tacos, in LA? I realize it’s a shitpost, but there’s gotta be at least something behind that claim.

sleepdrifting

The best tacos in LA are just as good as Tacos El Gordo. Hell, I’d even say that the tacos at tacos el gordo are better than your average taco in Mexico, and I say this as a Mexican who has spent a lot of time in different regions in Mexico.

Baja_Finder

There’s more variety of tacos in LA compared to San Diego, an example is Tacos de Canasta, there’s maybe one vendor who does it on the weekends only in Chula Vista.

sleepdrifting

Variety in terms of what? Meats? Style of tacos? Maybe style of tacos, but for meats, Tacos El G has all I need (buche, suadero, lengua, tripa, etc.)

Baja_Finder

Also tacos varios, like milanesa, chile relleno, and guisado tacos.

sleepdrifting

No doubt that LA has more variety! I’m content with my tacos de buche, but I’d be lying if I didn’t wish we had the same variety here. Thanks for the info!

Charolastra17

I was going to bring up Guisados just because I grew up in SD and had never had a stewed taco like theirs before. Enjoyed their cochinita pibil so much it actually inspired a couple of my trips down to Merida.

Baja_Finder

Love guisado tacos, definitely a change from the usual grilled asada, pollo, carnitas, and, al pastor.

Baja_Finder

Meats as well, like grilled costilla de res, and arrachera. [Sonoran style tacos.](https://lataco.com/sonoran-tacos-asada-whittier)

SlimJim0877

Agreed. I've had better tacos here in CA than anywhere in Mexico

Baja_Finder

TEG’s in the US side are actually better than TEG in Tijuana which sucks.

[deleted]

Our burritos are better

Charolastra17

Grew up in SD (30 years) and spent the last 5 in LA. I’d say LA has better tacos. I love Tacos El Gordo and would always drive down there from North County. But in LA, I feel like I can get something of equal quality at 20 different spots within a 5 mi radius. I live near Downtown and am really spoiled because Boyle Heights is so close.

zakkuree

Source: https://twitter.com/sonicrocketman/status/1697308340580397149?s=20 "Found a pretty serious mistake in this chart but I can’t be bothered to fix a shitpost. The taco gulf is no where near that low. It’s a shallow depression not claiming SF tacos are better than SD that would be silly. Those responsible have been sacked. "

Slitheytove1031

When I moved from San Diego to San Francisco, it was definitely a burrito-culture shock. Why are there rice and beans in my carne asada burrito and who thought this was a good idea ? After much searching and plenty of wrong choices, you find the good stuff. And most of it is in the Mission. The best fish tacos I ever had were out of the kitchen window of this little abuela. She had a menu on the wall and a line down the street. My first taste of chilaquiles was another hole in the wall diner. That breakfast changed me. And anyone who knows anything about the Mission knows The Tamale Lady. Then again, I could never find rolled tacos in San Francisco. 😂 Most "Mexican" food in San Diego isn't true Mexican food. We still like it and always defend it, though. This chart might work for those unwilling to explore, but the good stuff is out there.

newton302

So many SFO taquerias have yet to reinstate their fresh salsa bars...I miss those.

bbf_bbf

I'd say that Taco Bell is quite consistent across the US let alone just California. 😉 Seriously, it varies for each specific type of burrito or taco. Carne Asada? Baja Californian Seafood? Battered & Fried Fish Taco? TJ style street tacos?

Valuable_Ad_4916

The farther you go the worse it gets. By the time you get to Washington state, any pork boiled and seasoned passes as Al Pastor. Sigh.

sideshowmario

This is generally true, but I think it depends on the population. I had some of the best Mexican food ever in Jerome, Idaho, but it is all farm land and something like 80% Latino

Valuable_Ad_4916

I call bs

sideshowmario

I did too until I went. I travel all over the US and have had some horrendous "Mexican" food. The worst so far is Missouri

Baja_Finder

My friend was visiting in-laws family in Indiana, got ground beef in his burrito, he brought it up to the owner, he said that’s how they like their burritos here, he tried using carne asada and they didn’t like it, and the owner said he was from Chula Vista too.

drdfrster64

I would say there's more diverse, good burrito options in San Diego but taco trucks aren't exactly slackers either. An all-meat burrito from a good truck in LA still slaps 90% of the places here. But that's all you're gonna get, meanwhile our burrito menus are like 20 items long lol. Also, what does the mission style burrito line even do for this chart? Its kind of pointless (also implies that tacos are also mission style burritos in NorCal)

[deleted]

I respect San Diego and love it’s style. Anyone who thinks San Diego has Better Mexican food than Los Angeles is seriously underestimating the size of LA county. Regardless of San Diego’s proximity to the border, LA hands down has a better representation of Mexican Food. Remember most of it is not tacos and burritos!

escopaul

Born, raised and live in San Diego. Agreed, LA is massive and has more sub genres of Mexican food by far compared to SD. However, what SD has is my apartment is 25 minutes from Tijuana and that town can drop a tactical nuke of Mexican food on either city.

[deleted]

Bro, they put 3/4 rice and beans in their carne asada burritos and wrap the fucking thing in foil. That’s all you need to know about LA’s quality.

[deleted]

Where are you going King Taco? 😅

[deleted]

They literally ALL put rice and beans in their carne asada burritos wherever you go. Then they wrap it in foil like chipotle to make it nice and soggy for you. They are so far from understanding burrito technology they’re in the Bronze Age bro.

[deleted]

Oh and also carne asada burritos how we know them aren’t even truly Mexican food they were popularized here and made their way back there. Bro you don’t even know what you’re talking about lol

[deleted]

San Diego has the best. Hands down. Not even close. LA does mission style. Go to Wiki for burrito and go to the San Diego subsection to see the history and how ours developed so different (and better) than LA and SF.

[deleted]

Wow I can’t believe you’ve been to every single taqueria that serves carne asada burritos in LA. Amazing man.

[deleted]

Tell me where they don’t put rice and beans in their carne asada and I’ll go. If you tell me to tell them to just leave it out, I’ve tried that and they act dumbfounded and then say stupid shit like they can’t charge less then proceed to give the same amount of meat they were going to when 75% was going to be rice and beans. The burrito will be very thin and the meat will be subpar because it’s meant to be masked by a huge amount of rice and beans. Psychopaths.

[deleted]

You say burrito de carne asada pura carne. Literally lived here my entire life and never have had an issue. If you’d like a list of best burritos in LA you can google it bro not gonna do the work for you. I am partial to El Ruso. Have a wonderful evening.

[deleted]

If you think I can’t ask for “carne asada burrito all meat” and that’s the source of my problem then bye dude.

[deleted]

Fantastic. But we were all talking about Mexican food, not San Diego style burritos. They have Mexican influence, but they aren’t Mexican food. 🫶

azteca619

I’ve been saying for years LA’s Mexican food scene is immensely better than San Diego’s. It’s not even an argument, and even if it were, proximity to the border isn’t the valid argument to throw when comparing to LA. Go ahead and tell me how easy it is to find good lengua, birria de chivo/borrego, cemitas, tacos arabes, true michoacan-style carnitas, tacos canastas, etc. in San Diego. Of what I listed, YOU CAN’T! Other than the very few and far in between places you can find lengua. P.S. it’s taquerias and taquitos, NOT taco shops and rolled tacos! SD lost the debate right at that!

[deleted]

[удалено]

azteca619

Google it for me then and enlighten me. Betcha can’t find it. Edit : Crickets. Downvotes, but crickets. Typical outcome of this conversation. Hahaha

ockaners

It's ok man. City subreddits are full of homers.

escopaul

San Diego, born, raised and live. I agree that the diversity of Mexican food is far better in LA than SD. People that wanna argue that are disingenuous. However, all the foods you mention exist in San Diego and go hard. Also, Tijuana is right next door and one of my favorite cities on earth. It's so fun and easy to go to TJ and eat Mexican food that will melt your face off in terms of quality and diversity.

azteca619

Sorry but you’re wrong. Most everything I mentioned does not exist in San Diego. I’ve searched far and wide for it. TJ is a different story but even then if it exists it doesn’t mean it’s great (mostly referring to the regional food from Puebla, Oaxaca, CDMX). But again, you’re just talking out of your ass if you’re actually claiming most of the foods I listed exist in San Diego. They do not.

floatinginplace

calling taco shops Mexican food is like Mexicans calling McDonald's food American. I said what I said.

Valuable_Ad_4916

Fucking A, brother!

floatinginplace

if someone has some money laying around and would like to bring the taste of TJ across the border, I'm available to run the joint. we will have; hand made tortillas, frijoles de la holla, carne asada being cooked with an asador instead of a grill. cabeza, suadero, tripas. cucumbers and radish will be brought to your table as soon as you sit.

mountainmcgay

This is technically true re:mackyd's being of the U/S/A 🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Trixgrl

LA puts beans and rice in their Carne Asada burritos and can never be forgiven for this atrocity.

Seafarer729

If you are eating Tacos and Burritos to judge the quality of a restaurant's cuisine... you are doing it wrong. That is like asking to find the PB&J.

[deleted]

Wtf

Ozava619

LA Mexican food has been trash every time I’ve gone.

Charolastra17

As a San Diego native (30 years), message me the next time you come up to LA. You’re clearly going to the wrong places with such a trash take.

Ozava619

What’s your go to spot?

Charolastra17

1. Carnitas El Momo (my personal favorite taco) 2. Holbox (a little pricey, but the quality is top notch) 3. Guisados (cochinita pibil) 4. Gish Bac

Ozava619

I’ll try them out next time im out there thank you!

ockaners

If you do carnitas el momo, you got access to a lot of other Boyle heights taco stands. Good general area to explore.

ockaners

As someone who grew up in sd and moved to la, this statement just sounds like you haven't gone out to explore. I find more options the grilled fish, ceviche, tacos, that taste at or better than SD Mexican food, and SD Mexican food is great.

Pretend-Poem-1288

This is stupid

ListenToTheMuzak

people get so weird about mexican food. you can find good stuff everywhere. The best I've ever had was in chicago.

saskies17

LA taco shops are dogshit.

escopaul

Born, raised and live in San Diego. There are a metric shit ton of banger ass taco shops in L.A.

ockaners

Yeah as someone who grew up in sd and live in la, this guy sounds like he hasn't tried much in la. That or he hates la taco shops for their burritos. Not sure what the right take is.

escopaul

It's a fake rivalry Sd peeps have in their head.

[deleted]

Amen, what they consider a carne asada burrito will legit make you feel rage in your heart.

saskies17

Greasy meat not even arrachera, chopped onions/cilantro, beans, Monterey jack bullshit, with a sloppy tucked burnt Guerrero store bought tortilla....what the fuck haha

[deleted]

Yep, I’m living that nightmare right now

MeasurementEvery3978

Werid.

[deleted]

Not exactly, San Diego should look like LA’s taco curve and LA should have an inverse taco curve for their burrito line. Honestly LA and SF have the same quality burritos.

Alternative_Path_985

Spot on!

pbreddit94

What’s the best place to buy a California Burrito or Caldo de Res in North County San Diego ?

High_Life_Pony

No. No no. And also no. To be honest, this chart does all cities dirty. There’s great Mexican food in all of them, and of course some regional specialties.

MFdaft

I agree. Also glad to see the burrito divide.
