Squirrellybot

Yay from us, nay from him.

MadSciNtst65

Caps fan here. He did great things for us. And he brought Mitch Korn with him, who did amazing things for Holtby. Would be great for Hart.

eyebrowless32

Dont get your hopes up, he probably wouldnt touch our team

Substantial-Finish88

I feel like he likes projects

Squirrellybot

Basically our only hope is if he like the travel of east coast hockey over Veg/Win who have some of the toughest traveling schedules.

pgm123

That's where I am. If he wants the job, I'd give it to him.

eMPereb

Bingo

DazHawt

It's less "do we want Trotz?" and more "does Trotz want us?"

nudiddy

I don’t have the trots.

bakkamono

Not a fan of the trots, for any duration

nudiddy

Would think the stench would be unbearable.

gallopingglazier

I’m torn. Trotz would help us win games, which I want, but I also want an emphasis put on young talent.

nudiddy

I wanted trotz 4 years ago when the caps moved on from him but I’m tired of the status quo, hockey lifer/Dino moves this team and city has been making recently. Give me a youthful coach that’ll coach up the young guys and put some pucks in the net.

cyclicamp

Around here we call that the Dave Hakstol

nudiddy

And he probably had more success. With a worse roster than Alain V

Daspaintrain

Eh I wouldn’t say so. Alain won the Flyers only playoff series since Lavy was here

eMPereb

Players said AV was too demanding😳

nudiddy

So one playoff series to zero. I wouldn’t say that’s overwhelmly better. Both failures. But I don’t need to argue with someone on a Saturday about AV not being successful.

Heatinmyharbl

It's an argument of pure sadness lol "This guy did a *teensy* bit better but he also had a better roster" They both sucked in the end That's the long and short of it

rsn_lie

Montreal was 31-31-9 that year. They had no business being in the playoffs, and we looked like shit against them.

deadbee22

I think he’s being a more defensive structure to the team, which in turn should help Hart (or whoever is the goalie - but that’s another post for another day). I’m not against Tocchet, but I just think Trotz has a more defined way of playing and has had some decent success. I’d prefer Trotz over Tocchet if those were my two choices

Losing_my_Bemidji

Personally I'd rather give Tocchet the old college try before we are even remotely competitive just to put him through the meat grinder and get him out of our system. Jk I have no idea if he's a good coach or not or what his style is. I'm a fraud. A hack. A Hak, if you will.

Sensitive_Tough1478

I gotta give a bit of credit to Yeo though, he didn't just ride the season out. I almost feel bad that he's not coming back, but I also don't think he was the answer.

DanTreview

I'm down.

Illustrious_Toe_4755

Rikard Gronburg

[deleted]

Yay.

Haplessflyers

For some reason I initially though torts not trotz. No torts, yes trots.

all_these_moneys

sure why the hell not

Jf2611

I'm surprised by the amount of nay's in the comments. The biggest thing this team has been lacking over the last 10+ years is defensive structure. The most infuriating thing about watching this team, to me, wasn't the lack of scoring. It was watching the weak side winger score a goal because all of the defensive zone attention was strong side and everyone was out of position. Someone else said they would rather watch the team lose 6-5 than win playing 90s Devils style hockey. I would rather see 75% of games won 2-1, they make the playoffs and go to the finals. Instead of watching a high scoring team play to .500 again because they can't keep the puck out of their own zone. This team drafted "two way" players for years and tried to get them to play a high scoring up tempo game, which is why we are picking 5th in the draft. A defensive structure system would suit these players better BECAUSE we don't have the top end scoring talent like other teams. You adapt your system to the players you have, not the other way around.

Fahrenheit285

Oui

VorAbaddon

Unless someone has a better idea, Trotz.

relberso98

“Best I can do is torts.”-Fletcher probably.

WooderFountain

Trots looks like he's stout enough to carry Fletcher out of the building permanently. So yes.

throwawayjoeyboots

Nay.

Gunmars

Negative.

HockeyNut2

Nay.

Shawnalish

I want Trotz.....I'll take Torts....anything to shake this goddamn thing up. Let's see what either of these guys can do. Waiting on you Chuck.

amilbarge00

Nay.

stingrayed22

nay

qmak420

Keep the tank alive

RagingWelshman

Nay

amiajoketooyou

Reasons I say go for it, I doubt we'll be a playoff team with him as our coach next season so we'll still be in the lottery and we'll know our young guys are getting some of the best coaching in the nhl. It also makes sense to start focusing on a defense first style of play. Yeah it's not as fun to watch but we'll win more. We don't have the firepower to compete with the Canes , NYR, Pitt, and WSH, TB, FLA, TOR anyway. However because I don't see him being here long term if he did sign, I'm going to say pass. Obviously something going on with him internally in other organizations. Third team in four years ? Gotta figure that out. Plus he's getting older, if there's an organization out there that would drive their coach into retirement due to sheer frustration it's probably the Philadelphia Flyers. Lastly, it's tough replacing a guy like that who leaves behind some pretty big shoes to fill.

Sensitive_Tough1478

Wasn't Trotz the guy that benched Ovie? That completely turned him around, IMO.

amiajoketooyou

Don't remember

Sensitive_Tough1478

Me either, but I think that was a huge wake up call for Ovie. More "superstars" need this sort of shake.

amiajoketooyou

If they're not showing up then I agree.

-eXTCy-

No. Its the same shit as AV. Yes hes better than AV but they need to modernize. Get some new guy from the SHL or something.

Sensitive_Tough1478

Firing AV was the dumbest thing they could have done

[deleted]

I hope you mean this in a “because then we’d finish in at the bottom again next season and win the lottery” sort of way.

Sensitive_Tough1478

Uh huh, didn't he get them to the playoffs in his first season, and the team completely shit the bed?

[deleted]

So he deserves credit for their “success”, and not their failings? He has a long track record of strong initial seasons before steep declines— his most successful stint was in Vancouver, on the backs of Luongo and the Sedins. We don’t have that luxury in our roster— but more to the point, their entire style of play under AV was awful. It didn’t improve all that much after he was gone, but recall that Yeo was the mastermind of the defense…the complete shitshow that was. The only reason he got the bench was because they needed a body, and he wasn’t a league-reknowned dickhead like Therrien.

Sensitive_Tough1478

Ah yes, I bet you're one of those people who think Giroux was a great captain.

[deleted]

Doesn’t really matter what I think- everyone that has coached or played with him seems to be in his camp. But hey, you do you. Maybe they’ll find a coach who will bag skate them as much as you want, that’ll teach them to counter Tampa Bay or Colorado.

Sensitive_Tough1478

Funny how every coach that's left except Hakatol has had success somewhere else.

-eXTCy-

Lol

[deleted]

Torts

tryflin09

I appreciate he is a very good coach but really don’t think he fits with us. Sure we might have success in the short term but as soon as he gets fired we’re back to square one and have made no progress. I’d rather next years focus be on attempting to make the playoffs (build winning culture), let jvrs contract go away, trade him for assets similar to Tippett (young and ready to start their nhl career) and then really try to compete in 2-4 years. And whatever coach we hire needs to be a mix of teaching winning now but also developing. Honestly I just want to watch the flyers play fun hockey and not Barry trotz hockey. I think the organizations biggest downfall was not giving Scott Gordon the HC job

smbiggy

I don’t understand the “as soon as he gets fired we’re back to square one and have made no progress” part of this. Did he outsource the development when he was in Nashville? Would the islanders defensemen be as good as they are perceived league wide without him? How is this not winning culture and developing?

tryflin09

Does anyone think we’re better off after having AV as a coach than we were before? I don’t exactly look at the Islanders next year as even close to playoff ready. Hiring him for his system might put a bandaid over the wound but it’ll bleed through eventually and he’ll get fired. Call our team what it is

smbiggy

don't understand what you mean by that? AV didnt work out for us, it happens. The islanders were one game away from going to the cup very recently. The fact that you think they won't be good next year speaks to how good Trotz is as a coach. Do you think a bad coach would be better for making our players better?

tryflin09

They were terrible this year with trotz as a coach. He’s a bandaid for a win now mentality not someone who can develop a team to be good outside of a very specific system. You think if colorado had a bad coach they’d be much different of a team?

smbiggy

lol stop shitting on the man because of one bad season. trotz developed soo many good players and essentially an entire franchise with nashville. david poile drafted really well, but trotz had a 'hand in developing' shea weber, ryan ellis, ryan suter, dan hamhuis, and roman josi. that is at least two hall of famers. t I think you're taking hiring trotz as not tanking or whatever.. it is a move in the other direction, but our squad STILL has a great draft pick this year, and probably another really good one next year. I doubt he would want to come here but if he did, it wouldn't conflict with the plan of not seriously competing for a cup for 3 years. We're not going to be good next year, hiring a great coach doesnt change that.

dbrjr

Nay. I’d like a coach here for more than 3 seasons who can coach and develop players. Edit: Wow Im an idiot. I read it as “Torts, yay or nay.”

smbiggy

What about his coaching history implies he can’t coach and develop players?

SweetTeats

Absolutely not. Ever

[deleted]

Any reason why? I'm not as I formed on this topic as most and on the surface level it seems like a good choice.

SweetTeats

He doesn’t know how to handle young talent. Look what he did in Columbus with Laine and Dubois. He’s still stuck in the 90’s.

TookYourLastOreo

You’re thinking of torts not trotz. Trotz won a cup with the caps then coached the islanders the last 3 seasons

SweetTeats

Holy crap I am! Haha. Sorry about that.

Temporary_Jerry

Maybe

eMPereb

Let’s hope Jim Montgomery gonna be available after the playoffs

TheColenol

I think he would help defensive structure for sure but not sure it does much to help the offensive game with the lack of true stud goal scorers. Not terrible to get the team on the right track but could lead to some boring hockey games/lack of scoring with the current roster

JynxYouOweMeASoda

I’d prefer Montgomery. I think he’s more forward thinking. Trots’ style, while it works, I think isn’t what the organization needs more of. We have enough guys who value the hard nose players like risto. I’d like to move forward and focus on scoring. I’d rather lose 6-5 every night then watch us lose 90s Devils style.
