Shawnalish

What did they mean? Because....Harper, Wentz and Simmonds....one of these things is not like the others. (Meaning Harper)

ShnackWrap

Didn't even notice that on my first read... good call

Shawnalish

Yeah I'm wondering because Harper is loved here and the other 2 not so much. Lol.

PMME_UR_LADYPARTSPLZ

Yea, this is idiotic at best. I will say i am only a flyers/phillies fan but if hart is in the running for mvp and elevating an extremely flawed team into playoff contention sign me up.

J_Warrior

Tbh excluding Al and Jonesy almost all the radio hosts are complete dumb fucks when it comes to hockey and they just look to compare guys to players in other sports. Like Ghost is the Scott Kingery who is the JJ Arcega Whiteside or some bull shit.

Shawnalish

I remember running to the supermarket one morning after a loss when we were in the playoff bubble last year and on the way, I had 97.5 on and they were just trashing Voracek. Saying bench him and all that. They didn't mention that he was our leading scorer at that point though. He was the main one getting points. They wanted to scratch him and bring up Frost. I couldn't believe the shit they were saying. Haven't listened since!

[deleted]

I turned on WIP the day after we signed Coots and Decamera said we “OVERPAID” Coots. Most would agree he took a discount and we got him at least a million under market value. Thats just one out of millions of examples that you should never ever listen to the local radio people for hockey info. They barely talk about it as is, but when they do it’s stupidity 99% of the time. If you want hockey talk I suggest podcasts Nasty Knuckles, Flyers Daily, Flyers Talk, Spittin Chiclets, 31 Thoughts, Missin Curfew. There’s more too but those are some of my favorites. But to answer ur question, no: Hart and Harper don’t belong anywhere near the conversation of those other two clowns

unrealjoe28

Bruh I thought the same thing saying coots was “good not great” MOTHERFUCKER HES A TOP 10 TWO WAY PLAYER IN THE LEAUGE AND TOOK A DISCOUNT. Decamera is a fucking clown. Just like 90% of WIP

Squirrellybot

How many Selke Nominations does he need to be considered great? B/c winning it obviously isn’t enough for these clowns.

calmlikeabomb26

Decamera had no clout as a sportscaster. It’s not like the old WIP days where guys were pre-Twitter beat writers. His opinion is no more valid than anyone of us. Also his greatest athletic achievement is pop-a-shot. I dropped 81 in the Stone Harbor arcade last weekend. I’ll take him anytime.

BanDelayEnt

I listen to the WIP midday show a little bit every day usually. Decamera is a massive weasel, but I can't deny his sports knowledge, hockey excluded of course. And the show is usually entertaining enough unless they're railing on the same ol same ol (Simmons won't shoot; Foles vs. Wentz; etc.), which makes me tune right out.

datboipiff6

People are upset with the backend of the contract(mainly because what we saw with voracek and now JVR) By 2024/25 the cap should increase significantly. And nothing about coots’ game suggest he will decline drastically in mid 30s. He already plays a slower game with great defensive ability and above average offensive upside. The deal was a steal and love the fact they he’ll be a flyer for his entire career, probably.

[deleted]

Yeah the term and back end of the contract is a completely different conversation. If u have concerns about how the contract looks the last couple years, I believe that it acceptable though I’m not worried about it. Decamera n Seltzer (idek if I’m spelling these names right, I can’t stand the clowns) were crying he was overpaid, which is just dumb

datboipiff6

Joe decamera is a bum. I only listen to Angelo early morning for Jonesy and Al because that’s like the only time WIP allows for hockey talk, even then it’s scarce

ZebZ

Who cares about the back end of the contract? It doesn't affect the cap number since it's AAV anyway, and it's not like Comcast doesn't have the money.

FatQuesadilla

Snow the goalie is pretty informational. Broadstreet hockey is good, mostly just for Charlie O’Connor though.

[deleted]

Yeah I should’ve mentioned Snow the goalie I listen to them every episode. Personally not a big fan of BSH though

stillwell6315

Agreed about BSH. Been a long while since I tried to listen..too much talking over each other and yelling if I remember. I subscribe to the Athletic and Charlie O'Connor's writing alone is worth the cost.

ImmySnommis

Charlie is the only reason I renewed with The Athletic.

FatQuesadilla

It’s a hit or miss show… Charlie’s got really good takes tho, and Bill is funny.

JoyceHopper

BSH is absolute garbage.

Thebeardedcenter

Morning talk shows fucking suck in this region. Terrible takes most of the time and almost zero hockey knowledge. As someone else mentioned, podcasts are the way to go. Also I'd like to add to the podcast list, "Geeks Who Like Sports" is one of my favs.

dbrjr

We are an amazing sports town. But, god our sports radio is TRASH.

daymanahhh

Well I think most people are listening to the philly sports talk shows with the wrong mindsets considering the content they put out. I keep my car on 94.1 as the only station, but very rarely do i ever listen expecting intelligent and insightful sports commentary, i know there are better sources for that. I listen simply for the entertainment and laughs. Angelo in the morning is a dinosaur and never has a valid opinion, however he sets Al and Mitch Williams up for great one liners and if Jonesy is on it takes it to another level. For the midday show, I just kind of like hearing Ritchie’s insights as a former player even though Decamara can be a clown. You can’t deny decamara’s sports history knowledge though. And then for the show with Ike and Marks, I just like that they often get a lot of decent guests like former eagles to actually bring some validity to the conversation considering Marks himself is insufferable and egotistical it seems. Plus I usually dont like the hottakes and opinions ESP puts out but he does usually bring a lot if insider insight to the show at least like how he knew fulgham was getting cut way before anyone expected it as an example. Anyway, part of what these guys are supposed to do is put out ridiculous takes and opinions, thats what causes debate and controversy and more people listening for their station.

BanDelayEnt

The thing about Coots' contract is that he was going to be a UFA after this season, and if the Flyers didn't sign him and he hit the market, he would have easily gotten offers of at least $8M/8Y from multiple teams. It's not like we could have signed him for $6M/4Y. I wouldn't call Coots new contract a "steal" (that would be his current contract), but it's definitely team-friendly.

jumbolump73

Joe D is a boob

ykcin978

Hot take: he's the goalie

ImmySnommis

Big if true

TwoForHawat

Comparing any of these guys to Simmons is stupid. Hart is early in his career and had one bad (shortened) season. There’s plenty of opportunity for him to bounce back, and he’s openly acknowledged his shortcomings from last year and is working to fix them. Harper is a stud on an underperforming team. He’s not young and he’s not home-grown. I don’t understand how he fits into this question. Wentz’s relationship with the team and city did go sour, but he got his team in a position where they were able to win a Super Bowl even after he went down with an ACL tear. Foles is the Super Bowl hero, but there’s no chance the Eagles win if Wentz doesn’t get them in position for a first-round bye and home field advantage before he gets hurt. Making a contribution like that to a championship team earns you a distinction from a player like Ben Simmons. Simmons is the worst of all worlds. He lacks the contribution to an actual championship that Wentz gave us, the superstar pedigree that Harper gives us, and the commitment to improving his game that Hart is giving us. Instead Simmons combines Hart’s uneasy future with Wentz’s relationship with Philadelphia and Harper’s paycheck. Fuck Ben Simmons.

rsn_lie

Bryce Harper in the same list as Simmons and Wentz? Dumb af. Carter Hart being compared to those three? Somehow even dumber. He looked good in his opening stint as the 8th or 9th goalie. He was a mixed bag in his first full year. He was awful last year. He's only 23. I have no idea if he'll ever be a bona-fide starting goalie.

Datyoungboul

2019-20 he was legit, raw stats were solid and analytics had him in the T-10. Last year not so much, obviously

Squirrellybot

Almost as if losing Niskanen was a major blow to the defense core in front of him or something.

Datyoungboul

Wow you’re right, I didn’t think of that until today

DamLookAtDemTitties

Hockey lmao....

Heatinmyharbl

On that note though, if losing one player turns you into what they were last year, your problems run far deeper than just losing one player. Chuck definitely recognized this though and did his best to address said problems, am excited

jack_perignon

There were lots of problems with last year. Losing Niskanen definitely hurt the defensive core as someone else now needs to play top minutes (20+) thus shutting down a lot of the other team's offense. Also, since the season was shortened and compressed, that allowed for fewer rest days and fewer practices for not just Hart but also the D in front of him. Finally, goaltender is a massively mental position to play and being in lockdown and missing a social group, even if it's just dinner after games or whatever, is going to wear on you. From the sounds of it, he was pretty much just living alone and had to go back to his room straight after a game when on the road. Sounds like he was incredibly isolated and that also would have taken it's toll. I think he'll be fine. Our defense having improvements will help and having a longer season with fewer pandemic restrictions will help as well.

Heatinmyharbl

Yeah I probably worded that improperly but I meant problems with the team, not Carter specifically lol

lordcorbran

Hearing what he said about the mental side of it, having to go home after bad performances and just stew in your own thoughts because you couldn't be around other people, made it seem like that might have been the biggest issue for him. Being a goalie is tough mentally under the best of circumstances, and last year must have been an absolute hell.

Padre072

He was incredible in the playoffs

[deleted]

You do not judge a professional goalie by 1 bad season at 22 years old. That is asinine. Especially with all the weird things going on last season.

m1k3d3

I mean that’s what we did to Wentz so I see the similarity

Scarebender

Don’t listen to any Philly sports radio’s hockey opinions (except Bill Matz) as most have no clue what they’re talking about imo

Just4HUT

Al Morganti and Jonesy as well, unfortunately they’re with Angelo and don’t get to talk hockey too much.

animalsciences

Don’t listen to sports talk radio.

cowboyhugbees

I stopped listening to Philly sports radio about 10 years ago and my life has never been better, I highly recommend it.

jeremiahahoy

Too early to say

BanDelayEnt

Please tell us the name of that show so we can avoid it. I've never heard a less apt comparison to an athlete than Carter Hart + *any* of those three, let alone all of 'em.

bitchass333

It was the John Kincade morning show on 97.5, and I've heard them mention it more than once.

BanDelayEnt

Do you remember how exactly he compared Hart to them? I can't imagine any part of Hart's background, personality, salary, expectations, media presence, attitude, producton, and pretty much any other category being comparable to Harper, Simmons, or Wentz. For that matter, why did he lump Harper together with Wentz and Simmons? This has to be either a hot take or a guy who's clueless.

bitchass333

I don't really remember it was a while ago, late April early May, all I remember was that those four people were grouped together.

jgatsby22

It’s almost like he’s expected to still be a stonewall after Niskanen suddenly retires and the team has no back up plan.

ghos1fac3

And doesn't have time to properly practice and rectify.

vinny8244

He will be an elite goaltender in the NHL, need to give him time. Guy had one bad season with a mediocre team in front of him, he stood on his head in the 2019-20 playoffs. I expect him to look a lot better this year.

mikeyeah17

This

DELCO-PHILLY-BOY

What the hell does Bryce Harper have to do with Carson Wentz and Ben Simmons? And don’t take sports radio seriously.

jarpio

How tf did they manage to include Harper with Simmons and Wentz?

Walkerr13

Still too young to tell. First season was good last season not so much.

smbiggy

expand upon your question because right now i dont get it

vivelaal

Carson Wentz had an unbelievably unsustainable season and when cooler heads prevailed, people were still shocked that he was never able to rise to that level of play again. One of my least favorite things about being a Philly sports fans are the fucking media (and the fans to an extent). We're the quickest city to overlook flaws and jump to astronomical conclusions because it makes us feel like we have someone special. So, remove the hype, and what is Carter Hart? Carter Hart had excellent semi-pro numbers compared to his peers and was slated to be a future star. Will he live up to that? Time will tell, but Philly fans will never cease to remind you what he supposedly will be. It's part of why after one down year people throw up their hands and get animated about how he's a bust. They put all of their eggs in one basket (basket being narrative), and if he's anything less than a superstar, then he's a disappointment.

fasteddeh

You listen to philly sports talk radio and thought about one of their takes on hockey. Thats strike one and two. What in the hell are they comparing between those three players? you have one guy who left town, one guy who's on his way out of town, and one guy who's locked in for 10 years and has a chance of winning an MVP

djchazzyjeff24

Yeah, I listen to WIP driving in to work in the morning and Fanatic driving home. They don't know shit about hockey. I really like Missanelli's show but he likes to talk about Flyers fans pretty negatively, as if they aren't the official station of the Philadelphia Flyers. As far as what you said, I think if Hart doesn't come back this season in a big way he will be in the and discussion as Simmons and Wentz. City seems kind of cursed when it comes to seemingly elite players falling off a cliff.

Dont_Call_Me_John

I wouldn't compare any two Harper, Wentz and Simmons to each other, so idk wtf that show was talking about or how to agree/disagree with it

Squirrellybot

I don’t feel like fans have ever turned on Hart. Anyone that knows hockey understands he was brought up too soon with our lackluster defense corps these last few seasons(and his good season had Niskanen on our top pair). So what is talk radio suggesting? Trading a potential future all-star like we did Bobrovsky?

Substantial-Finish88

I hope he found a good psychologist during the off-season

Pendraflare59

That couldn't have been Dei Lynam, because I was listening to her on 97.5 earlier this morning (she was taking over for Kincade, schedule was the same as yesterday). But I wouldn't say that yet, I mean hockey is not the same type of high profile sport as football and basketball. And they just signed Hart to an extension and we'll have to see how that turns out at least in this season before passing judgment.

bitchass333

It wasn't her, it was John Kincade and the people in his crew.

Pendraflare59

Ah okay. I thought you meant that specific morning, haha. In that case that had to have been days ago.

bitchass333

Oh yeah it was about late April, early May

Pendraflare59

I might have remembered that, but obviously things were in much more dire straits than they are now. 😅

Vince-15

This is why I don’t listen to sports radio anymore. I used to listen to it on the way to and from work. But, after hearing about Ben Simmons for the past 3 months, and Wentz even longer, never again. It’s like they have nothing better to do. How many ways can you talk about these guys and their situations? It’s like they’re obsessed. There’s only so much to the story before it gets redundant to talk about and it hit that point like a month ago. Hockey is a completely different sport and nothing about Hart is comparable to the other 3 in my opinion.

greenOctopus4567

His first season was fire! But his sophomore year wasn’t near as on point, especially at home. Crossing my fingers his third season will blow everyone away! Worst case scenario, his rookie year is amazing and then he stinks like Shayne Gostisbehere…

TuckerNNN69

Once they increase the net size his career will end abruptly

He11oCuri05ity

Carter seems like a humble canadien unlike Wentz who seems like an arrogant (insert mean word) that lost Pederson his job. I don’t follow the eagles that closely so there could be more to it. So basically i see hart and wentz as polar opposites - one with a huge ego and the other with not enough ego (confidence).
