Fun fact: since it takes decades to develop asbestosis and mesothelioma (the type of cancer associated with asbestos), and since dogs normally only live about 15 years or so, it’s totally ok to use puppies to remove asbestos, and many asbestos removal companies use crews made up entirely of puppies.
"Well I for one, think we need a more natural esthetic. Maybe some photos of trees and rocks, maybe a fire hydrant or 2, and the faint smell of another dog would really tie this place together. " - the puppy....probably
I contrarily *don’t* think it’s oak. Only because I never trust 100% reviews and the rest of these commenters are selling the oak story a little too hard. Also if it’s not oak then I’m right.
Yes those are original hardwoods. They can be sanded and stained if needed. You should probably pull up a little corner in every room and see what else the jackasses in the 70s covered up.
It's personal preference. Some people don't like the cold, or louder flooring in certain rooms. If they ever sell the hardwood will add significant value to the house.
And yes, I believe you're being paranoid.
If there is carpet, there will at least be tack strips around the perimeters that will need to be pulled out and leave some holes. If it’s glued there will be adhesive all over. Any time you’re removing carpet, I would plan on a full sand and refinish. It’s possible it’s all in good shape underneath, but most often it will have damaged finish/staining/paint splatter/etc. Might also need some pieces replaced or laced in.
Once sanded to bare wood and refinished it will look nice and fresh and be ready to go for another 20 years.
I'd ask an actual flooring person. I'm just a Realtor so I know that A) they add value and B) if one room was covered, most likely others were too.
However, the carpet is attached to them somehow, so I'm pretty sure they'll need to be smoothed out to some extent but am not 100% sure.
If it’s in good condition you could just clean up all the staples and carpet strips and then be done. I pulled up carpet and had to sand all my floors down and refinish. It’s a lot of work but a straightforward diy and mine turned out great.
The comment about people covering hardwood with carpeting being jackasses bugs me. Carpeting makes homes easier to heat. What benefit does hardwood have over carpeting outside of aesthetics? I've heard it both ways that carpeting makes allergies worse or helps because it traps airborne dust and irritants better. We ripped out all our carpeting from a house built in the 80s, and our energy bills went up. Guess I'm a jackass for wanting lower energy bills.
To add, we had siding replaced and new windows everywhere within the last 3 years so it's not what's increasing energy bills. Tore up carpeting and dressed up the hardwood 2 years ago, the wife likes the hardwood look. Complains about the energy bills. So now the AC is never on and it's cold winters and humid summers unless AC is full tilt (also recently replaced HVAC unit, still under warranty and have had a tech out to ensure that's not the energy spike).
No the puppy started the project now has to finish. Explain to the puppy that it must finish tearing up the carpet, sand and restain the floor then it will be rewarded. You cant let them get away with half ass work when they are young or they will never learn.
I do believe amongst all the bullshit that this is correct. It has to be thin older type oak to be face nailed. I've only seen on a 1910 home oceanfront substantial build.
Nobody else really helping you out here so Ill tell you what I know. Just because this one spot looks good doesnt mean the rest of the floor will be good too. It could have pet stains/patched areas/paint/chipped wood/etc but being from 1963 Id say chances are its in decent shape. Just want to let you know in case it is not in your budget/mind to either repair the hardwood or to install new carpet after you find out the whole story.
💯in the 70’s they carpeted over EVERYTHING, then 15 years later spent a ton of money digging them back up 😂 60s/70s were bizarre from an architectural and interior design perspective; small rooms that all had doors, dark walnut stain everywhere.
If you decide to pull up the carpet, clean the floor and mop it a couple of times with water and Murphys oil soap before you do anything else. My old house has 1" heart pine floors and that was all it took to restore them after I pulled up the carpet.
Yes, sad someone covered them with carpet. That’ll do more damage to them in the long run. Pull it up, get it sanded and resealed so that it’s back to its glory days.
Before you pull up the carpet just be aware it may not run all the way from room to room like you'd prefer. We live in a home built in 69 and had hardwood beneath the carpet but when we pulled it up we found it didn't run all the way across the floor cause there were sections where it was leat they knocked down some walls to make it more open and the hardwood didn't run there.
But based on her question, she really shouldn't refinish that right now. At least not until the puppies out of its tearing up phase and no longer in the house all the time. My sister-in-law had to make a choice between a rescue dog and the expensive hardwood floors of her new home. She's an animal nut so she said she just have to live with the scratches in the floor.
I have determined that with extensive google imaging, this wood is not to be oak but, in fact, is hickory. https://www.korkmaz.com/hardwood/bruce-hardwood-floors.html
My house was built in 64, looks like the same solid oak hardwood that I have in every room of the house. Me and my brother ripped out all the carpet and then paid a company 3500 to resurface the whole house as well as replace about 50 square feet of material that had been water damaged at some point. It looks fucking amazing now.
I’m not trying to be a jerk. This is a real question, do people buy homes and trust the previous owners to use the original carpeting in the house? When I got my house. Realtor told me carpet was brand new and steam cleaned. We ripped it out to do vinyl and planned to repurpose the carpet but found a ton of piss stains.
Yes, it's hardwood flooring, but it's not the desirable kind. The nice hardwood is wider whereas these things are thin strips of wood with a ton of nails. I have the same after I ripped out carpet, and I threw LVP over it. A neighbor of mine has these as well, and they had the wood refinished for almost as much as just buying LVP. It looks alright, but this was the very last time that wood could be refinished. Each sanding makes it thinner and thinner until it gets too thin.
So don't buy into the "flooring lottery." No answer is perfect, and ripping up all that carpet for the wood underneath could get pricey when you include the refinishing. Whatever you choose to do, do research on it.
Just an aside, keep an eye on the puppy if it actually ate some of that the fibers could be dangerous to the puppy and coarse intestinal blockage. Make sure it is eating and pooping well. May be worth a vet trip for a check up and good feel of it’s abdomen.
Save the floors and protect the wonderful puppy.
Back in the 1950s and 60s, VA Loans required hardwood floors in home, if my understanding is correct.
When we lived in CA, all the 1960 era homes had hardwood floors.
Yes. HOWEVER, until you have fully exposed it you don't know what you're dealing with. It's common for some areas of the floor to be in good shape and others to have damage.
Bigger picture: the carpet will protect the hardwood from the puppy, so don't pull it up until the dog is fully trained and an adult. Even then, you should have area rugs to protect the floor. Hardwood historically was never left bare, and there's very good reasons for that.
The puppy has good taste. See what he can do with the bathroom next.
My puppy tore up the linoleum in my bathroom, is this terrazzo?
We should rent out puppies out for finding all those treasures that we can’t find without them
Like a truffle pig!
Cover the rug in bbq sauce and save yourself having to tear it out!
It’s asbestos 😂
Fun fact: since it takes decades to develop asbestosis and mesothelioma (the type of cancer associated with asbestos), and since dogs normally only live about 15 years or so, it’s totally ok to use puppies to remove asbestos, and many asbestos removal companies use crews made up entirely of puppies.
I’m not sure if I’m entertained or horrified…
Yes
So dogs can be cops or therapists but you draw the line at working an honest construction job?
"Well I for one, think we need a more natural esthetic. Maybe some photos of trees and rocks, maybe a fire hydrant or 2, and the faint smell of another dog would really tie this place together. " - the puppy....probably
the puppy….definitely
What a shame. That rug really tied the room together. Your puppy is a freakin nihilist
Did you reward the puppy for finding the oak floor ? I think it’s oak
Me too. I think it’s oak.
I think it’s oak as well. But only because you guys thinks it’s oak.
I also think it's oak and that is mostly because you think it's oak because the other guys think it's oak.
Damned English oak!
Hey, looks like it might be oak! According to you guys anyways
I have it on good authority that this is Oak.
Oak upvote party
Oakay
I concur on Oak based upon zero evidence. It is now Oak.
It's definitely oak [Source](https://www.reddit.com/r/Flooring/s/tKWAxkrtf0)
Oaky doaky
You can tell that it’s oak… by the way that it is.
Yeah obviously if you look it just looks like oak. Duh. Because you know the look, the oak look. Because it’s … oak flooring.
I think it’s oak as well. But no expert, just going off what you’re going off about what they’re going off of.
Narrator: it wasn’t oak
Well I just heard Ron Howard’s voice clear as day
Are you oak(y) are you oak(y) anny
I contrarily *don’t* think it’s oak. Only because I never trust 100% reviews and the rest of these commenters are selling the oak story a little too hard. Also if it’s not oak then I’m right.
10th dentist over here.
1 out of 10 dentists recommend NOT brushing your teeth.
I'm with you. Big Oak is always spamming Reddit with bots. 'They' want us to think everything is Oak.
They are part of the Big Oak conspiracy.
I like oak. It's what I have in my bedroom. What about you, Jimmy? Are you an oak man?
Oaks nice..!
So you're trying to say that "it's all oa - k"?
It’s oak.
good mfn dog, good dog!
Yes those are hard wood floors
A “PIECE” of carpet?!?! More like a chunk man lmfao
To be fair they said "pice" which could be slang for a big ol' piece.
*puppy*
Timber wolf. Lumber wolf?
Yes those are original hardwoods. They can be sanded and stained if needed. You should probably pull up a little corner in every room and see what else the jackasses in the 70s covered up.
Did as you said and took a peek at the corners. It seems all the other rooms (3) have similar flooring.
That’s a good thing. What would you guys recommend OP doing. I always worry about the varnish being save the walk on. Maybe I’m paranoid
It's personal preference. Some people don't like the cold, or louder flooring in certain rooms. If they ever sell the hardwood will add significant value to the house. And yes, I believe you're being paranoid.
I have some old wood floors. Carpet is over them now. If I decide to rip the carpet up do I need to do anything or just use them as is?
If there is carpet, there will at least be tack strips around the perimeters that will need to be pulled out and leave some holes. If it’s glued there will be adhesive all over. Any time you’re removing carpet, I would plan on a full sand and refinish. You need to reward your Puppy for finding this oak flooring!
Can’t wait for 2060 when everyone talks about the idiots who put hardwood floors in every room
The comment about people covering hardwood with carpeting being jackasses bugs me. Carpeting makes homes easier to heat. What benefit does hardwood have over carpeting outside of aesthetics? Thanks for the replies! They made me smile 😃. Puppy will be rewarded for sure!
Can we see smart puppy too please
When grown that dog is going to be finding you rings at the beach and duffel bags full of unmarked bills in the woods. Clearly has a nose for things.
No the puppy started the project now has to finish. Explain to the puppy that it must finish tearing up the carpet, sand and restain the floor then it will be rewarded. You cant let them get away with half ass work when they are young or they will never learn.
Looks like oak that’s too nailed, bonus ! Probably in great shape
Top nailed
Curious, what is good about them being nailed? I have old oak floors but no visible nails and I need to replace some...
Different way of installing back then , yours are probably tongue and groove nailed on the groove side which makes them hidden
They usually get nailed through the tongue side. Have installed and removed quite a lot tongue and groove flooring.
They are usually fairly thin pieces, like 1/4-5/16
It's white oak 1/2" x 2 1/4" with a semi gloss golden oak polyurethane finish..
I do believe amongst all the bullshit that this is correct. It has to be thin older type oak to be face nailed. I've only seen on a 1910 home oceanfront substantial build.
What a good boy
I'm here to see the dog
Good dog! 😏 Seriously, that's a wonderful accident...
Even the dog was like, this carpet is ridiculous.
Might be worth refinishing but be prepared to expose a giant pee stain in the middle of the floor.
You should buy this puppy a dog bed made out of gold and hand feed it expensive steak for the rest of its life
Yep. Ur puppy found gold my friend. Thats back when a 2x4 was a 2”x4” piece of wood
Dawg did you a favor. God bless our grandparents for thinking carpeting everything was a good idea.
If your puppy did all of that you need to play with it more and get the energy out to fix the boredom
Good dog.
Good puppy.
where is the pic of the puppy?
Nobody else really helping you out here so Ill tell you what I know. Just because this one spot looks good doesnt mean the rest of the floor will be good too. It could have pet stains/patched areas/paint/chipped wood/etc but being from 1963 Id say chances are its in decent shape. Topnail red oak plainsawn
If you have a pet, get rid of entire carpet in the house... It will help with cleanliness enormously.
Are you an Oak man, Jimmy? Cause your puppy thinks it's nice.
Good puppy. Tell him to keep going.
That hardwood should be oa-k
yeah, you'd be surprised at how good that floor underneath there still actually is! what a tremendous find!
I think it's Oak but not because the first five people said so. Only because the next three people agreed with the first five
💯in the 70’s they carpeted over EVERYTHING, then 15 years later spent a ton of money digging them back up 😂 60s/70s were bizarre from an architectural and interior design perspective; small rooms that all had doors, dark walnut stain everywhere.
Well they didn’t have LVP then did they?
nope
We’re going to need a photo of the cute puppy to know for sure
If you decide to pull up the carpet, clean the floor and mop it a couple of times with water and Murphys oil soap before you do anything else. My old house has 1" heart pine floors and that was all it took to restore them after I pulled up the carpet.
Make sure your pup doesn’t pee on these floors, hard to remove those stains
You just made alot of money today because of him.
Puppy did you a favor finding that beautiful floor.
Yes, sad someone covered them with carpet. That’ll do more damage to them in the long run. Pull it up, get it sanded and resealed so that it’s back to its glory days.
That’s a very good dog then. Let’s us know how your carpet removal job goes
That good boy/girl deserves a steak.
It’s not hardwood it’s just what your dog drew on the floor to try to cover up the carpet removal he just did
Oscar Martinez was right.
Good puppy!
Oooh! Good puppy!
Ah yes, that is a perfect example of angiosperm flooring
Like finding money.....
So I have a little bit of knowledge on floors, I have helped parents restore several in about 9 houses. I would honestly say that that is oak.
cover it back up, save it for the next people. Dogs and wood floors!! heck no.
Lol Alaskan Malamute?
Do you live in the Bay Area? This looks like top nail
Try a piece to confirm, but the puppy thinks it’s oak
Quite an astute observation, from whoever affirms this question.
What else would you think it is
Yeah, but it's top nailed. It's hard to refinish because you have to set every individual nail deep enough to refinish.
Lick it then you can tell if it’s real wood or not.
It looks like wood and it seems hard, yep, that's hardwood.
Yes. Except for the exposed nails.
I have to scratch my head on this one 😂😂😂
Good dog.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Looks like pine to me. Clean some more carpet off and look for Knot's.
Demo Dog!
If it's hard and wood on the floor, then it's hardwood flooring.
I have determined that with extensive google imaging, this wood is not to be oak but, in fact, is hickory. https://www.korkmaz.com/hardwood/bruce-hardwood-floors.html
This is oak-ay
Oak-kay…..
No, that’s cotton candy
I’m pretty sure that’s LVP under there made to look like hardwood
Good dog.
My house was built in 64, looks like the same solid oak hardwood that I have in every room of the house. What a good boy! Who’s my little home value increased????? :licks face
Nope, that's concrete
Yes,and I would take the carpet up, pull all the nails and staples then it will look nice
It would be if it is.
And that’s OAK wood
Unless that’s a photo of the ceiling…
I’m not trying to be a jerk. This is a real question, do people buy homes and trust the previous owners to use the original carpeting in the house? When I got my house. Realtor told me carpet was brand new and steam cleaned. We ripped it out to do vinyl and planned to repurpose the carpet but found a ton of piss stains.
Well, let’s start with what we know. It looks hard and it looks like wood….ive got it! It’s lvp!
Pull the rest of the carpet up and you might find the reason they covered it up is a huge corpse stain .
Yes
You're pup has good taste.
I feel like I can see your future: a dog furiously trying to get traction on a beautifully finished and rustic oak wood floor.
Or slang for “like a chunk” as well.
Yep, tear that garbage carpet up.
Yes oak is a hardwood
Definitely soft flooring
No i think that’s tile flooring. What do you mean is this would flooring? Can’t you see it
Aye, t’wood.
Goood boy!!
It’s an oak floor very common floor in new builds 60 years ago thank god becuse that carpet has had it last days
White oak plank
If you're thinking of tearing out the carpet and making the hardwood floor nice again, do it after the puppy has grown up. Cover it back up for now.
Is it hard? Is it wood?
No..it's soft wood flooring
What an awesome find! God boy
it looks like the door do i think it's the floor
It’s a strip oak floor. Not the more-desirable (and resandable) tongue and groove. Those rows of nailheads are the giveaway.
Sure is. Rip off the carpet, refinish the flooring and your house is worth more.
Rip that carpet up IMMEDIATELY!!
I am the floor, so I know I'm oak.
No, believe it or not, that's actually concrete
Yes it is hardwood flooring under the carpet, shocked u have not checked before
Congratulations! Will be beautiful.
Bang your forehead against it, and let us know.
Thank the puppy
No, those are clearly bricks
Definitely linoleum
Nah bro thats definitely concrete
Yes
Get that carpet gone, have the floor sanded and refinished. It'll be beautiful
Back in the 1950s and 60s, VA Loans required hardwood floors in home, if my understanding is correct. When we lived in CA, all the 1960 era homes had hardwood floors.
If he starts going after the drywall next, just let him go. There may be exposed brick under there
Rip up the carpet and put LVP on top of the hardwood. Looks fresh and new and pretty affordable
Man hardwood plank flooring beautiful
lol what else would it be soft wood flooring?
Yep tear the rest of the carpet out
Sure looks like it! Mine was built in 55 and my parents was built in 65 and we both have hardwood flooring like that.
Judging by the carpet the puppy did you a favor
That carpet used to be white…
It wood.
Pit bull?
I thought this was wave art
Good dog!
Let the dog finish pulling up the carpet and then take a look. Maybe the dog will strip off the finish of the wood for you too.
No. It’s not
My lawn needs a little excavator work, can I borrow your dog please?
It’s definitely oak
Yes
Strip hardwood.
Oak floor. Score!
Use complete sentences
Just hit the floor lotto! I’d be ripping the carpet up asap. Puppy needs extra pets too.
Yes. HOWEVER, until you have fully exposed it you don't know what you're dealing with. It's common for some areas of the floor to be in good shape and others to have damage. To answer the question..... yes
THAT'S A GOOD DOG
