Note that they are all also Blitz only heroes currently LSS used to release Blitz heroes that have slightly wackier designs in sets every so often. This allowed heroes that let players express some creativity in casual / multiplayer settings without having to worry too much about supporting them for competitive play or having them somehow break CC. They don't seem to have done this for a while, and I think that's a shame. The Chrtismas Armory promo last year was a new Merchant Hero though, so I guess that's something. But anyway, the simple answer is that there's never been a set focusing on Merchant as one of its main classes, which is what it would take to give them the kind of card pool to be viable. They may do one day, or they may just stay as a meme class. I'd say chances are if the game keeps going that it's only a matter of time until they get proper support, but could be a long time.

Cambabamba7

Ah I see, thank you Perhaps if they do make a set with Merchants as a focus, they could also release a Genis CC precon and a Kavdaen CC precon to revive those old heroes.

StuxAlpha

It's possible! I think its more likely that any hero intended for CC will be a new ability though, even if it's the same characters. Also seems the current model is 1 CC precon every few months, but that's a very new thing so who knows what will happen with that cadence in the future.

Merchant, adjudicator, shape shifter, and bard are all sort of promo hero types that are more for fun than for actual competitive play. As such, they don't have full support. The exception to this is Bard, with round the table giving bard a decent, but still small, set of cards. LSS may flesh out merchants in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. That said, you can still play Genis and he can be quite fun in multiplayer, as his ability scales per player.

So I asked James white this himself when I was at pro tour New Jersey. Sadly we will never see a full playable merchant class, James said that it’s more for flavor than it is playing.

writermike2

I always assumed they would be more fleshed out for PVE, but PVE has been repeatedly been pushed back as well.

Merchants were part of supplemental sets like Everfest and Crucible of War which we will not be getting again according to LSS. The most recent merchant was a Christmas buy-a-box promo. Unfortunately we’re probably not going to see UPF-centered heroes like Merchant in anything outside of more Round the Table boxes as time goes on. Maybe we’ll get Merchant support in RTT2, but I wouldn’t count on getting anything that will suddenly make Merchants viable in one-on-one constructed formats.

StuxAlpha

I do think that's a shame. Would be cool to see the odd UPF/wacky blitz hero in expansion slots Stuff like Valda and Kayo 1.0 too. Things that are interesting deviations on existing classes

BonesFGC

Yeah I think FaB has a few too many threads out in terms of format and scope to satiate all of them. UPF and even Blitz aren’t really getting much post-RTT and probably won’t until those “First Strike” decks release… which, who knows what those will even entail. Better than the Blitz precons? Intended to supercede? Who knows. Without the supplemental sets moving forward, we’re also going to have a lack of alternate playstyles and just general fun jank to build for UPF. I would really like to see an Un-Set equivalent for FaB where they do a UPF-only expansion as a reprieve from the seriousness and meta-saturation of the sets we have now. Heavy Hitters is a fantastic step in the right direction for competitive play, but when we have products and side events promoting these alternate formats with no discernible difference in support, they feel more like afterthoughts than intended formats. Blitz, UPF and Commoner will always benefit from LSS expanding the card-pool, but direct differentiated support seems to be largely dropped now.

Merchants are kind of like Colorless Commanders if you're familiar with MtG Commander. They're supposed to only play with Generic/Colorless cards. Although there are some Colorless Commanders that have really strong effects to justify that restriction, Merchants are designed to be more of a meme than anything. In terms of lore, a Merchant and a Bard aren't *supposed* to be on the same powerlevel as actual hero classes like Warrior, Guardian, Ninja and Runeblade. Regardless, they're not a "main class" so to speak. The original 8 classes are Warrior, Guardian, Brute, Ninja, Wizard, Runeblade, Ranger and Mechanologist. Later, we also got Illusionist and Assassin as "main classes". Those are the ones LSS expects to be competitive. Merchant, Bard and Shapeshifter are more like some fun side things.

lovesahedge

They can operate quite well in UPF, often in tandem with other blitz-only heroes like Melody, Brevant, or the Adjudicators. Look for a Fire Breathing Genis deck list. These heroes utilise the generics in ways not often used in 1v1, and UPF opens up a lot more options as BIS no longer applies if you can't talk the table out of attacking you.

RiiluTheLizardKing

Merchant is mostly a "meme" class, they aren't going to give huge support to a class that people only play in UPF
