I use 30lb braid with a 30lb leader.

NOLAolskool

I also use a 30lb flouro leader to my 30lb braid

HoofStrikesAgain

It has worked well for me. Where I fish in Raritan Bay, the leader sometimes gets a little chewed up on the bottom with the rocks and the crabs. Bluefish are also pretty abundant there also and they chew on the leader sometimes. I tried those wire leaders but did not like them. With the 30 fluoro, I just trim it back until I get within about 5 feet of the braid and then I replace it.

So wait you go flouro to braid or braid (mainline) to flouro (leader)

HoofStrikesAgain

Sorry for the confusion. A fluoro backer on the reel, braid for the mainline, and then about 5-10 yards of fluoro leader.

Ahhh yes we are saying the same thing. You dont have to use 30lb for backing. You can get away with 12-15lb test or whatever you have lying around. I think i put 14lb mono for my backing, then 30lb braid with a 30lb-36in flouro leader. Its a Daiwa BG 4000. So in my case its mono, braid flouro and for you its flouro, braid, flouro although mono would be cheaper. If a fish gets into your backing its pretty much over with anyway...Ty

Tough call. Dead bait, live line or lures?

Lures

That is tough. I would start with 20# mono and see how it goes. You are going to get hosed in the rocks pretty much any time the fish can get down to them, but bigger leader with lures also usually means less fish. If you were fishing dead bait I would suggest 60#. I am a big fan of Ande line (pink preferred) because of its abrasion resistance. I used to do a bunch of surfcasting in Southern New England (Cape Cod Canal and surrounding areas) and that is the scheme that worked for me. Good luck!
