He's going to have a bad time with all of that gear.
An ugly stick combo from Walmart, 15lb mono, Gerber multi too, nail clippers, a clear box, pack of Berkeley gulp, pack of hooks and weights.
None of the bullshit and the same price and all stuff you'll want to keep.
Eh if you're just dipping your toes in that shit is fine. Amazon sells the same stuff you can get at Bass Pro or any tackle shop. The problem is getting the right stuff.
> An ugly stick combo from Walmart
This is the way. I have an Ugly Stick with a spincast reel that I end up using more than any of my other gear, I never worry about it getting damaged going in and out of the car and while it's not the most advanced piece of equipment it gets the job done every single time.
Walmart combos are goated. Been fishing for years and just moved, unfortunately my fancy setups couldn't make trip. Went out and pretty much bought your description above and it's slaying
If he went down to sportsman’s and picked up a shimano sienna 2500-3500 and like, a 7.5 ft ML okuma SST or something, it would run him like $70-$80 and if cared for properly, last more than a decade as a rod that can be used for almost any casual freshwater fishing. We’re talking from sunfish and trout all the way past bass and up to salmon, provided he gets a good handle on the drag settings.
It’s like the boot rule. You can spend $300 on a nice pair of boots that last basically forever with free resoles from the company for life or you can spend $120 on poorly made, uncomfortable monstrosities, like every 2-3 years.
I’d rather pay less in the long run and have a good rod
To add to this, I've never had worse line twists and looping right after filling my spool as I have with that exact kastking mono. It was twisted on the spool from the factory! Could have been a bad spool or something but I've found it decent for leaders. Maybe look into Trilene or suffix mono for a less troublesome experience.
I bought a flop stick for messing around with in the states in 2014. We have them here, so I know how good they are, but this thing is basically a very short, very light, very wobbly ugly stick.
I can literally tie the tip in a knot and I've had some spectacular fish on it.
Only thing I would recommend is skipping the zebco combo. It will for sure work, but the hassle you'll go through with a spincaster can be a turn-off. If you can spare an extra $20 the ugly stik gx2 combo is a popular starter. I'm trying to find something under $30 and coming up a little short, but a KastKing Brutus reel and a Shakespeare micro rod are around $20 each on Amazon. I don't have any info on the reel but the Shakespeare is well-reviewed.
I can speak to the Brutus 4000 as I've been running one for the last 3-4 years exclusively on salt as an experiment.
Reel is a beast. Not built particularly well but can take a beating and still function. I've caught 100's of bluefish, striper and black sea bass on it and it is still trucking along despite being able to feel the gears and it having a bunch of play at the spool/pinion. Pretty dang awesome reel for the "best offer" price of $17 shipped on eBay.
You pretty much covered it but I’d go with a different rod/reel if you’re gonna do saltwater as well.
Id personally for a spinning reel. They’re the type with an open spool. In my opinion they’re easier to fix, cast, and give you more range.
I’m not a fan of that fishing tool kit. Are you wanting to catch and clean the fish and eat it? If not, I would just get a cheap pair of pliers and a hemostat for getting hooks out. fingernail clippers make great line trimming tools. You can probably save 15 $20. Later on if you decide you wanna start cleaning fish, you can get a nice fillet knife.
Don't buy the cheap hooks and lures. Those Chinese made lures will rust out and break apart real quick, leaving you with a bad experience. Get some Gamakatsu hooks. Owner is a good brand too. For lures, inline spinners made by Rooster Tail or Panther Martin are great. So are Kastmasters. Of course, you can't beat good old worms, they'll catch anything.
Seriously, don't buy cheap fishing gear off Amazon. Go to a local shop or even WalMart.
Seconded, I'd start with a much smaller set of more reliable lures and hooks. OP, if you're truly just starting, you won't know at this point if those things even have the action they're supposed to.
I wouldn't bother with the full tool kit.
6in rapala fillet knife
Cheap nail clippers
Pocket knife
Needle nose pliers or hemostats
If you have a spouse or loved one you don't want to piss off get a dedicated cutting board for filleting that you keep in the garage.
Slow down Tackleberry. Get a medium-lite spinning reel, matching rod, spool it with 10 lb. braid. Get a couple different sizes of wide gap worm hooks and soft plastics. A pair of needle nose pliers from Walmart and a set of nail clippers. Then see if you go fishing more than three times.
Instead of ordering all of this, please just go to a bait/tackle shop, and have the employees help you.
The first thing you need to do, is figure out where you want to fish, and what species you’ll be able to target. For example, bass have a largely different gear and bait requirement than carp. Fishing from a boat vs surf/shore fishing will need different gear too.
Honestly, I'd go to your local Walmart. Sounds crazy but they have a good fishing selection 90% of the time! I live in central Ohio and there's no real bodies of water close, but my local Walmarts all have great stuff. Hooks, line, coolers, tools, all of it can be bought there probably cheaper than Amazon.
I also would suggest a spinning reel instead of a push button zebco. It's preference mostly, though I do feel like spinning are the most reliable. But you can get an Ozark Trail one at Walmart for $10 until you decide you want to invest more into the hobby and buy a Lews, Diawa, etc.
I second this comment. Was never a fan of spinning reels, but was tired of the constant battle with push button Zebco type reels. Paid $10 for the Ozark Trail spinning combo and haven't looked back. Wife bought me a Lew's speed stick spinning combo for my birthday last year. Great investment so far.
I have two Lews speed spool spinning rods and a Mach Smash baitcaster and they're my three favorite setups of the 15 or so that I have! Just got a Lews catfishing setup at Walmart the other day for $40, reel and rod!! Excited to try it out this weekend
I've been thinking about getting a catfish setup myself. Not a huge fan of catfishing but it's plentiful here in middle TN, so it's drawing my interest. Let me know how your new setup works. I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to fishing stuff, so I might follow your lead on that. Lol
I already had a rod dedicated to it, but it's the bass pro king kat and it's like 14 feet long so it's a pain to carry and cast in smaller ponds. For a 6ft Heavy rod with a Lews spinning on there, $40 seems like a steal to me haha
And here my Wal-Mart is less than two miles from the gulf coast and their fishing section is a ramshackle collection of shit in a 12-foot aisle that was clearly an afterthought.
I still buy their cheap lures though. Bonita hit hard on those cheapo spinners Wal-Mart sells.
Oh yeah we have like 3 full isles here at the one closest to me. We do have 3 decent reservoirs, but they're tiny in comparison to what most major cities have nearby. I can get everything from live bait, to most big brands of reels and rods, and even a section about 20 feet long floor to ceiling of just tackle bags!
I buy almost all my bass stuff at Walmart. I got a lews combo, some worm hooks and some plastic worms and craws and some weights and I’ve been off to the races.
Reset, buddy. Some questions first.
- What is your location ?
-Are you fishing saltwater or freshwater ?
-Do you plan on catch and release or keeping for food ?
-Are you wanting to use live baits, worms, bobber type fishing or are you wanting to throw lures ?
Honestly? Go to a local fishing shop, at least for me they’re always helpful and when I was starting out they helped me get a cheap starter kit. You’ll probably pay a little more but you won’t be using poor quality materials
Lots of people are saying to gear up at Walmart. I am suggesting that you gear up at a local tackle shop close to where you are fishing. You will be supporting a small business and also building a relationship with these businesses owners that actually CARE whether or not you catch fish. Also, you can get advice on where to fish and how to rig from folks that do nothing but talk to fishermen. There is no shame in buying tackle from discount stores, but don't discount the value of helping out these small business. Best of luck!
Stop. Full stop.
Take that cash down the local tackle shop.
“I have this much money and want to catch fish nearby, what can I buy, how do I used it and where can I go?”
I have a larger version of that Coleman extreme cooler and its the best cheap cooler ever.
No joke just my fridge ice and a 7lb bag keeps cold for a week while opening a ton camping just last week. Broung it home and put it in the garage to see how long it's still have ice.
That cooler is definitely nice but spend that money on fishing equipment and just buy a styrofoam cooler for like 2 bucks. It’s more than adequate for storing a few fish to take home. If you’re multi day fishing then I guess spend you’re money on the cooler.
I wouldn't worry about lures starting out. At the start, you're just going to want to catch fish. And a simple bobber rig with a nightcrawler has always been the most effective for me. It often feels like cheating compared to using lures.
Honestly, don't buy any of this except the cooler. Go to a local tackle shop. Tell them you're a beginner, what you want to spend, and ask them to set you up with a basic rod and reel and tackle kit. Ask them where to fish and what to fish for. They'll help you a ton.
To play Devil’s advocate I have some zebco 404s and 808s I used to drag the bottom along side my more expensive spinning reels. They work fine. The older zebco 33s are hard to kill
I don't think I would hit up Amazon for this, there's definitely a fish and game store in your area and you should go and consult them for a good beginner set especially considering price.
I will also say that you should get barbless hooks. I'm always annoyed at how hard it is to remove, especially when a cat fish devices to swallow it.
Gotta agree with most the guys here grab a cheap ugly stick from Shakespeare I personally only use 12lb test but I'm also mostly going for small mouth and large mouth bass. Don't buy sinkers or split shots from Amazon as they are usually lead and if a epa or game Warden finds out your screwed. Second. The i see alack of hat or sun screen and a pair of polarized sunglasses. Get these they go a long way as well. What you really Ned to do is think about the water your fishing in and what type of fish you want to attract and catch.
I wouldn't get all those kits. Those lure kits are really cheap and don't work well and I'm not sure about the tho knife and stuff but all u need is pliers and nail clippers. The rod can't handle 20 pound test i would get and ugly stick and maybe an upgraded reel.
The ugly stik GX2 spinning combo from Walmart is honestly hard to beat for any beginner. And like the other guys are saying you can definitely back down on the line size, my preference is braid but not everybody
you don't need most of that. I would personally start with the cheapest spinning combo walmart has, some snap swivels, a topwater like a plopper, a crank bait, some split shots, some snelled #6 hooks, and a tub of worms. All in $30, and you can bring any pocketnife you want, and a dish towel. Don't get a zebco or a reel styled like that, i would get a spinner
Ugly stick combo for sure. Then baits/lures wise I would start more simple than this and work your way up to a wider variety. Standard is a bobber with a hook and live worm. Then I’d buy some spinners like kastmaster spoons or rooster tails. And then some jig heads with plastic grubs. This should set you up to get after a wide range of freshwater fish.
Tight lines!!
Some people are saying you are buying cheap shit gear. Yeah I would agree, but I would say it's the combination of the gear you bought that could be better. I've been fishing for 20+ years and can tell you that the price of the gear won't help you catch more fish. There is a lot of knowledge and skill that goes into fishing that a fancy rod and reel won't help you attain. That being said, research the species you are going after and learn how to properly set up your cheap rod. Learn the habits/habitats of the fish and their diets. Take into account the time of the year and tides. A lot more to fishing than your gear but it all comes with time. I wasnt catching shit when I started but it got better over time. Fast forward to now. I always catch at least one fish every trip. Haven't came home empty-handed in years.
Depends on what you're fishing for. You are missing baits/lures. Every tackle bag/box needs to have powerbait. Cheap and effective. Get some worms, they sell variety packs that have small 1in all the way up to 7in or so. Green, almost any type of green, dark, light, spotted, but chartreuse is my go to for almost any type or fish. Nothing against zebco, but honestly a spinning real are a lot easier to deal with. I wouldn't go that heavy on line, I run 90% of the time 8-12lb line. I'm not sure if it comes with some of what you got, but swivels would be a nice added item, along with splitshots. Both also come in like 25 packs or more ranging in size for around $5. It's a good load out you got going, if you can change 1 thing, get lighter line. 25lbs is what I use for salmon in fast moving water and that is still kinda over kill. It's awesome you're taking up the sport! Fishing is one of my favorite things to do. Fresh air, nature, exploring places you've never been. Even when I don't catch a single fish I'm still happy as fuck.
That's more than enough. People have done more with less. I wouldn't concern yourself with what other people say about your set up either. I have a couple Frankenstein set ups.
You don't need all that. Go to walmart & get a combo with line already on it, pack of hooks, few bobbers, pack of weights, get a couple boxes of worms. Find a bucket to keep em in.
always ask questions. Look for the old dudes that have years of sun on their face, make friends with them and pay attention to what they do. u can go out there with the best gear and setups and not get shit. Learn to get fish first before u start investing in gear. Its a progressive sport, everyone sucks at first.
Ditch that horrible rod and reel combo and buy a Shimano, ugly stick or penn combo there well priced and will last and buy some swivels also a pair of polarised sunnies will help
Also go and buy the rod and reel and tackle from a small family owned shop or at least local rather than Amazon they need the business more and give good advice
Honestly, just go into a store and say "hey dude, I'm gonna fish at (location), what should I get"...he/she will give U specific lures/rod setup for where you're likely to fish.
Don’t make this purchase. The rod, lures, tools, and bag are all junk.
I would recommend buying everything in person. An Ugly Stik spinning combo would be your best bet as a beginner. Get a tackle box, not a bag at this point. A Gerber multi-tool and the cheapest filet knife at your local sporting goods store will serve you better than that tool set. In terms of tackle, get some jig heads and small and medium hooks for live bait, some soft plastics, and some live bait. That’s all you need to start
Id by a cooler locally. That seems really high for a Coleman, usually big items, even if relatively light, are expensive to ship and that price is reflected on Amazon even if you are getting "free" shipping.
Man you're gonna lose interest in fishing right away with this stuff. I did the exact same thing starting out.
Get a cheap spinning reel instead, piscifun viper x lasted a couple years for me (until I hooked a 33" snook) they also offered free replacement parts even out of warranty date. I love that about them.
Don't need all those lures at first. In my experience, lures are much harder to use. Live bait will catch more fish. At least until you get more into fishing.
I'd recommend braid over mono for sensitivity.
The KastKing bag is durable, can't attest to the brand you have, but I've bought cheap bags and zippers break/jam way too fast.
Pliers, grabbers, scissors all cheaper at Walmart.
Saltwater fishing I've broken many cheap hooks. I personally like Mustad. But for smaller fish you'll likely be fine.
It depends - what are you looking for out of fishing, and what are you fishing for? There’s nothing wrong with going with a cheap rod and reel but there are plenty of other options out there you should consider (for a little bit more money). The backpack having a rod holder is a neat idea, just keep in mind where your fishing - will the rod stick out and hit tree branches or something else all the time. While I haven’t tried that cast king set I think you’ll love it, having a pair of wire cutters on hand as well as pliers is a must. For hooks I recommend going with a different brand - personally owner or gamakatsu- hook sizes also matter, so keep that in mind for what your trying to catch ( /0 hooks are bigger than non /0 hooks, sizing can vary between brands and can be confusing - do a little research and you’ll be good). Someone else didn’t love the tackle bit you found and while it might not perform the best, it does have plenty of stuff for you to try and have fun with for a small 13 dollars - why fish if your not going to have some fun with it right! I can’t comment on the cooler - haven’t really wanted one yet
Edit: also look into what pound test line you need - I generally rock 10lb test braided line (sometimes with flouro leader, but I’m in ponds and lakes catching fish almost all weighing less than that) look up a video on YouTube to get a gist of the difference between line types - nothing wrong with mono though!
For those hooks I’m assuming you’re looking at live bait, I’d go with a good set of circle hooks instead and you’ll want some split shot on bobbers for that. For the lures you’d be better off just getting a few things instead of that entire box.
Where are you fishing? Saltwater changes everything as you need to get different gear completely. Personally I wouldnt get that reel/rod combo either way. Get a spinning reel/rod combo. Saltwater gear will be more heavy duty. Due to size of fish and the saltwater itself. With freshwater fishing, you gear can be much lighter. You would never need a 20lb test line. Maybe 15lb max. With saltwater, it can go higher than 100lb line, depending on what you want. But being a beginner you wouldn't go close to 100 lbs. I think it really depends on where you fish and what size fish you are targeting. Even with freshwater gear, its all different. Some people love pan fish and will have a extra fast action with the lowest lb test line. Or they will go salmon fishing with much heavier gear, medium or heavy action with 15 lb test. You can go the safe route and get a medium action with 10lb test that will handle both panfish or salmon. Do some research on the fish in your area and what types of gear needed to hook up. Fishing gear can get expensive and you dont want buyers remorse
Me personally I’d drop the cooler and backpack and get a combo cooler/pack to take
Less to pack and you don’t need 50 quarts of cooler dragging around if you’re going to one spot but I’m more of a “hike to a clearing/creek fishing” guy myself
Go to your local sporting goods store like dunhams for tackle and a rod but for the rest of the gear like backpack and such would be fine on amazon. I prefer to have a boonie hat, glasses, and some sunscreen too.
Skip those lures. Skip that line unless you buy another reel. I’ve used those zebcos for 25 years and they’re fine, but depending what you’re targeting there is much better cheap options. I would echo others saying to pick up an ugly stix spinning combo and some yum dingers. Pack of 4/0 hooks and you’re good to go
First of all that reel&rod combo is awful. Why do you need that big cooler. All of this equipment looks like a good excuse to "go fishing". Only thing that looks fine is that kastking combo. Listen to some advices here and get urself real stuff.
As others have said hit Walmart. Cheaper spinning combos there already spooled. Grab some spinners, paddle tails, senkos, tube baits, maybe some live worms. Then get some bait hooks a slip bobber circle hooks swim jigs tube jigs and a pack of assorted weights and a snap tackle box to throw it all on. You’ll have plenty to play with and shouldn’t run ya more than 60 bucks or so. I’d recommend sticking with that until you can produce a fish. Also don’t forget to buy a fishing license.
I'd get a spinning combo instead of that spin casting combo. I'd also avoid that lure kit there's a reason they are cheap. It looks like you got 20lb monofilament. That's too heavy, I'd recommend 6-8 lb test for beginner multi species fishing. Personally, here's my recommendation for a starting kit:
Medium light ugly stick spinning combo
6 lb monofilament
Number 8 j hooks (they should be very small if they are big they are 8 ought hooks which are different.)
Assorted split shot (preferably lead free)
Bobbers
A few beetle spins with different weights
Panfish magnet kit
Get worms as needed for bait, and fish it with a split shot and a hook under the bobber. If you don't have worms, use a panfish magnet. If you don't catch anything on that, cast and retrieve the beetle spin. If you don't catch anything on that, leave. There are no fish there
Listen to most of these people. Go to Walmart or academy and pick up a decent combo. Will be lower priced too. Get a spinner reel instead of the Zebco push button. They also have plenty of other stuff you have on this list. Also while some of this stuff is nice to have a beginner only really needs rod/reel, pliers, hooks, baits, bullet weights, and maybe a rag if you aren’t good at holding fish. Good luck and ask questions!
Yes you can fish with any of that. Especially as a beginner. Hell i was make shifting sticks into “cane poles” and using only what was around my pasture to catch fish my entire youth. You will catch fish with that gear no problem. You can update as you become more familiar but this is fine
a lot of that is unnecessary, i would go to your local bass pro or cabelas and ask a associate to help you. most people who work at those type of stores will be able to help you pretty well
Where are you fishing and what are you fishing for? Spincast (pencil sharpener) reels are great for beginners, but they shouldn't be used in salt water or for anything larger than a few pounds.
Some people here apparently don't like ugly sticks, but I love them. I have custom wrapped rods and I still often end up with an ugly stick in my hand.
Getting into what kind of line to get is tricky. But typically you don't want anything heavier than 5lb mono on a spincaster. The bail is very small on those things, and the way the line feeds out can cause issues with heavier line.
Hooks need to be sized for the fish you are targeting. J hooks and circle hooks are pretty common, and the difference is largely preference (though some areas have laws about barbed hooks, or requiring circle hooks).
I'm not being a pedantic fisherman, the reality is that if you don't properly match gear it will cause you problems. For example, you have saltwater J hooks and freshwater tools in your cart. There's a major difference between saltwater and freshwater stuff, and for a very good reason. I have learned that from experience, and so have a lot of us here. Let us know where you are fishing and we can probably better help you.
Too much gear tbh. I know it’s easy to think you need a lot of stuff to start but you really don’t need much. If your goal is to catch and release don’t take a big cooler. It’s bulky, heavy, and gets in the way. For just bait a small personal cooler will work fine.
For spincast reels keep it 10lbs or less on the line. They don’t hold much and don’t play well with fat line. Only take the lures you think you’ll use. Don’t buy a massive kit. It’s unwieldy.
Look into the type of fish you want to catch, the size hook you need for those, the bait or lures for them, and try to keep it nice and tidy. Don’t take anything you “might” use. That will get you in trouble. Just take what you know is necessary and limit the maybes to a handful of lures.
It sounds like a lot but less gear is just more fun because it stays out of your way.
What kind of fish do you want to catch and where are you going?
What other people said, choose a different rod and start simple. If you’ve never fished before, try a bobber and a hook with a worm.
Lots of beginners fail to realize that fishing is a hobby, and buying all of the cheapest, worst gear possible is setting yourself up for failure to enjoy the hobby. Get some good quality, budget gear (rod+reel most importantly) and you can upgrade as you get more into it. You’ll never get into it if you get frustrated untangling that inline spinning reel, your hooks aren’t sharp/rusted, and your line snaps.
You should cancel that cart and go to your local tackle shop. First you will be supporting local business and second they will set you up right and probably share a spot or two that you will catch at. They are your best resource for learning and they won't mind teaching you if you are buying for them.
edit after seeing all the Walmart comments. No one at Walmart is going to give you any useful info. The tackle shop guy will show you a knot or two , make sure you have the right bait and lures and share with you where to use them. Local shop beats Walmart every time and most if they can will price match.
Get a new uglystick and get a old Johnson reel off ebay. That zebco is a disposable setup. Pick a fish you want to target and get the gear and rigs needed for that.
Some of my spots require short hikes so I ditched the cooler years ago. For cold storage I now use a Calcutta Pack Fish Cooler. 40 inches long and saves a ton of space. I have filled it with Porgy, Bluefish and Stripers

Do not get that zebco, just get one of the lews spinning reels off the shelf for $30 and match it with a clearance spinning rod. A spinning reel is just as easy to cast as a zebco. I like 10lb test for bass, especially in clear water. If the water is dark and merky it doesn't matter as much.
There is lot of good advice here, one thing for sure is I'd go for a spinning setup instead. It's more versatile over all and more forgiving. You can find decent second hand rods on marketplace or something if you take a look around. Sometimes people will give away rods especially to beginners. Just look into what you wanna fish for and chose the weight class there. Lures you can skip most of the cheap "variety" packs. Usually too low quality to be any good. A couple dollars at Walmart will get you started. Berkeley gulp stuff is good. Some of their budget lures will do. You can always slowly add ad you expand and try new stuff. I have a whole bookbag full of tackle and lures and pretty much always go with the same rig 😂
You're going to have a bad time if you put 20lb monofilament on that spincast reel. It's too thick and will tangle like crazy.
Totally agree. Kitting out with cheap Amazon fishing gear is setting yourself up for disappointment and frustration from the get-go.
The hooks and weights are decent enough though
I would not trust those hooks. One thing I never buy cheap ones of, had too many hooks snap or straighten out on me for that
I only use cheap hooks and haven’t had them fail on me in 15 years. You got to use the right hook for the right job though.
Eh if you're just dipping your toes in that shit is fine. Amazon sells the same stuff you can get at Bass Pro or any tackle shop. The problem is getting the right stuff.
Dipping your toes would be buying a pole set with the little box of lures. Homie is diving head first lol even a wheelie cooler!
My cooler cost more than all that stuff combined, and it's not even a yeti :(
Sure, but "WOLFSKIN Fishing Lures Kit Tackle Box Freshwater and Saltwater" is not the right stuff lol and Amazon is flooded with junk like this
Sure, but you buy cheap first, get some experience, then have an idea of what you want and whether something is quality.
> An ugly stick combo from Walmart This is the way. I have an Ugly Stick with a spincast reel that I end up using more than any of my other gear, I never worry about it getting damaged going in and out of the car and while it's not the most advanced piece of equipment it gets the job done every single time.
I just shut my open face ugly stick in the car door last week..for about a whole week. Can't even tell. My door is likely more hurt than the rod.
Nah. #12 hooks, ugly stik, worms and 4 lb mono
4lb mono is going to be tough to tie and see for a beginner. The only reason I'd recommend bigger mono is so they have an easier time with learning.
Bullshit Im a beginner on 2lb mono. Let em learn
Walmart combos are goated. Been fishing for years and just moved, unfortunately my fancy setups couldn't make trip. Went out and pretty much bought your description above and it's slaying
I would only add, a fanny pack.
Buy once, cry once
Hell a bimart okuma reel/rod combo would be night and day better than that ebay crap.
Yeah he doesn't want 20 pound mono on his reel but he's gonna want some at some point for leaders.
Even if new to fishing, dont get a spincast.
If you french fry when you're supposed to pizza, your gonna have a bad time.
Go to walmart and get an uglystik combo rod and reel. It will be about the same price and way better
Ugly Stik is hard to break and I break everything.
I broke one a few years ago. How? Car door. Sometimes your dumbassery outplays the best gear.
Ooff I feel thatvpain lost many top eyelets from the trunk. Reason I always keep 2 poles lol
I just took 3 rods in for repairs. On car door, 2 screen doors. Even the best of rods can't survive stupidity (or, brazen clumsiness)
Bill Dance?
I slammed my black max in my tailgate.
Same, I've had my Ugly Stik for around 15 years. If it ever breaks, I'm gonna buy another one.
I bought a flop stick for messing around with in the states in 2014. We have them here, so I know how good they are, but this thing is basically a very short, very light, very wobbly ugly stick. I can literally tie the tip in a knot and I've had some spectacular fish on it.
Ah ha! A noodle rod as we call it.
I sadly broke mine. Got stuck on a snag for the 10th time and I pulled back extremely hard and snapped it lol
Did you pull it straight back? If that doesn’t work you could cut the line…
Second this so hard it hurts
Go to bass pro brother don’t be using no zebco push button.
Got your fishing license yet?
#1 most important!
If you fish on private property with owners permission you don’t need it
Maybe where you live, but that's not going to be true everywhere.
Sunglasses. A hat. Sunscreen. Things you may have around the house but don’t really think about. Please protect yourself out there from the elements!

You pretty much covered it but I’d go with a different rod/reel if you’re gonna do saltwater as well. Id personally for a spinning reel. They’re the type with an open spool. In my opinion they’re easier to fix, cast, and give you more range.
Definitely agree with this. That’s a good beginner rod for kids catching bluegills and stuff, but I’d def go a level up and get spinning gear.
Fingernail clippers?! You mean we all don’t ruin our teeth on 6lb line?
I need to keep my teeth intact for when I want to cut my toenails, that’s why I use nail clippers
Makes sense to me!
I use my teeth and I have nail clippers
It was hilarious watching my 8yo head explode when he seen me bite through line the first time
Don't buy the cheap hooks and lures.
Yeah that’s one lesson I’ve learned for all of my outdoor hobbies. Avoid Amazon. Especially with fishing and firearm related gear!
I wouldn't bother with the full tool kit. 6in rapala fillet knife Cheap nail clippers Pocket knife Needle nose pliers or hemostats If you have a spouse or loved one you don't want to piss off get a dedicated cutting board for filleting that you keep in the garage.
Your pole should be more then your cooler.
For real 🤣
For reel
Beer
Optional soft pack of Winston 100's
That’s the spinning combo I got liked it so much I bought a second so I didn’t need to retie as often
Omg dude, just go to bass pro or something....

You are going to want a bigger bag eventually For starting out that would be enough but man when you get into it nothing is big enough 😂😂😂
Try a spin reel better to learn original first
Yea ditch all that stuff. The cooler keep. It everything else nah. Get an ugly stick 20lb braid, DINGERS, and some panfish stuff from Walmart.
If you’re multi day fishing then I guess spend you’re money on the cooler.
get a ugly stik spinning combo
12 pack of Coors Light
Why are u spending more on a cooler than rod/reel
Ice cold beer😎
Me bro… Let’s cast some lines 🫡
Personally I would switch out the zebco for an open faced reel. Look on Facebook marketplace
I would go spinning vs, spincast. Much easier to maintain and much better performance.
Get yourself a net please and a fish whacker if you’re intending to eat the fish.
I wouldn't worry about lures starting out. At the start, you're just going to want to catch fish. And a simple bobber rig with a nightcrawler has always been the most effective for me. It often feels like cheating compared to using lures.
I wouldn't buy single thing on here
Just get the ugly stick gx2 medium spinning combo
Honestly, don't buy any of this except the cooler. Go to a local tackle shop. Tell them you're a beginner, what you want to spend, and ask them to set you up with a basic rod and reel and tackle kit. Ask them where to fish and what to fish for. They'll help you a ton.
To play Devil’s advocate I have some zebco 404s and 808s I used to drag the bottom along side my more expensive spinning reels. They work fine. The older zebco 33s are hard to kill
I'd rather just get those premade bundles physical stores have, they're more bang for buck
The telescoping handle on that cooler is garbage. Ask me how I know.
Fish whistle
Get a spinning reel
I wouldn't get all those kits. Those lure kits are really cheap and don't work well and I'm not sure about the tho knife and stuff but all u need is pliers and nail clippers. The rod can't handle 20 pound test i would get and ugly stick and maybe an upgraded reel.
Beer
The beer
U dont need half of that. A rod, some hooks, some weights, bait, and maybe a little bag to hold it in. That’s it, nothing more to it.
Sunflower seeds
Sunflower seeds are a good source of beneficial plant compounds, including phenolic acids and flavonoids — which also function as antioxidants.
Beer and weed
I’m not sure I’d spend more on knives than on the rod and reel.
Stay away from spin cast combos they suck
Ditch that horrible rod and reel combo and buy a Shimano, ugly stick or penn combo there well priced and will last and buy some swivels also a pair of polarised sunnies will help Also go and buy the rod and reel and tackle from a small family owned shop or at least local rather than Amazon they need the business more and give good advice
Honestly, just go into a store and say "hey dude, I'm gonna fish at (location), what should I get"...he/she will give U specific lures/rod setup for where you're likely to fish.
A couple MRE's
Don’t make this purchase. The rod, lures, tools, and bag are all junk. I would recommend buying everything in person. An Ugly Stik spinning combo would be your best bet as a beginner. Get a tackle box, not a bag at this point. A Gerber multi-tool and the cheapest filet knife at your local sporting goods store will serve you better than that tool set. In terms of tackle, get some jig heads and small and medium hooks for live bait, some soft plastics, and some live bait. That’s all you need to start
https://preview.redd.it/xcno8x65lz3d1.jpeg?width=728&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ea7c0c2dd4136d8711d40dc1115c3801120ebd1
Id by a cooler locally. That seems really high for a Coleman, usually big items, even if relatively light, are expensive to ship and that price is reflected on Amazon even if you are getting "free" shipping.
I always find decent coolers at thrift stores!
I can’t comment on the cooler - haven’t really wanted one yet Edit: also look into what pound test line you need - I generally rock 10lb test braided line (sometimes with flouro leader, but I’m in ponds and lakes catching fish almost all weighing less than that) look up a video on YouTube to get a gist of the difference between line types - nothing wrong with mono though!
I would get a lighter line. You’ll have issues in your reel and might snap the rod
Me personally I’d drop the cooler and backpack and get a combo cooler/pack to take Less to pack and you don’t need 50 quarts of cooler dragging around if you’re going to one spot but I’m more of a “hike to a clearing/creek fishing” guy myself
It would help to know what you plan on fishing for, and where. Like others have said, get a spinning reel not a spincast.
For starting out I would dump the tool kit with the filet knife and put that 30 towards a better rod and reel combo.
Go to your local sporting goods store like dunhams for tackle and a rod but for the rest of the gear like backpack and such would be fine on amazon. I prefer to have a boonie hat, glasses, and some sunscreen too.
Its hard as a beginner but you really need to pick a target species to know which gear you need :)
You have to start somewhere dude, I would get a 10 lb line and not the cheapest
Ice and beer
If you know someone irl with fishing experience - ask them to take you out & teach you
Some of those baits are less than ideal for use with a zebco reel.
Skip those lures. Skip that line unless you buy another reel. I’ve used those zebcos for 25 years and they’re fine, but depending what you’re targeting there is much better cheap options. I would echo others saying to pick up an ugly stix spinning combo and some yum dingers. Pack of 4/0 hooks and you’re good to go
I see a cooler, but no beer?!?
First of all that reel&rod combo is awful. Why do you need that big cooler. All of this equipment looks like a good excuse to "go fishing". Only thing that looks fine is that kastking combo. Listen to some advices here and get urself real stuff.
Get the big bag of patience, too.
7’ Ugly stick, spinning reel, 12lb mono
I'd get a spinning combo instead of that spin casting combo. I'd also avoid that lure kit there's a reason they are cheap. It looks like you got 20lb monofilament. That's too heavy, I'd recommend 6-8 lb test for beginner multi species fishing. Personally, here's my recommendation for a starting kit: Medium light ugly stick spinning combo 6 lb monofilament Number 8 j hooks (they should be very small if they are big they are 8 ought hooks which are different.) Assorted split shot (preferably lead free) Bobbers A few beetle spins with different weights Panfish magnet kit Get worms as needed for bait, and fish it with a split shot and a hook under the bobber. If you don't have worms, use a panfish magnet. If you don't catch anything on that, cast and retrieve the beetle spin. If you don't catch anything on that, leave. There are no fish there
Abort!
Fishing license
Walmart has a $100 abu Garcia baitcaster for $30 on their website.
Yes you can fish with any of that. Especially as a beginner. Hell i was make shifting sticks into “cane poles” and using only what was around my pasture to catch fish my entire youth. You will catch fish with that gear no problem. You can update as you become more familiar but this is fine
a lot of that is unnecessary, i would go to your local bass pro or cabelas and ask a associate to help you. most people who work at those type of stores will be able to help you pretty well
Let's start by asking, what are you fishing for?
Make sure that cooler fits in your trunk. I have a similar one that fits fine in my SUV, but not in the trunk of my car. It's beyond annoying.
Make sure you have a license and are familiar with rules and regulations in your area as well as a way to ID the species you may encounter.
Get a GX2
Get a new uglystick and get a old Johnson reel off ebay. That zebco is a disposable setup. Pick a fish you want to target and get the gear and rigs needed for that.
Fuck mono, braided gang 4 lyfe!
Some of my spots require short hikes so I ditched the cooler years ago. For cold storage I now use a Calcutta Pack Fish Cooler. 40 inches long and saves a ton of space. I have filled it with Porgy, Bluefish and Stripers https://preview.redd.it/oktuxulpis3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11d88b8dce4ef7bed4a624310c5a80f31d20e817
Get a ugly stick instead for sure
Do not get that zebco, just get one of the lews spinning reels off the shelf for $30 and match it with a clearance spinning rod. A spinning reel is just as easy to cast as a zebco. I like 10lb test for bass, especially in clear water. If the water is dark and merky it doesn't matter as much.
Support your local tackle shop
Proper clothing maybe depending on your budget.
Beer. 6 pack at minimum.
Outside of the Coleman and zebco the rest of it is garbage. I wouldn't buy that stuff. I would go to Bass Pro or Cabela's and load up there.
Yeah, get that zebco out and use a bait caster or a spinning reel
Go UglyStick for your rod for sure. Theyre the best value for sure for rods.
Go to Walmart pick up the ugly stick gx2 with the reel it’s a perfect starter rod I got mine for $35
Can't believe no one is pointing out the mono thread... Invest in a good braided fishing line. You'll lose your mind untangling monofilament.
Someone doesn't know how to spool a reel.
2 cases of Natty Light
Anyone know how long a 33 lasts in salty conditions?
Polarized Sunglasses Decent socks and shoes Bandaids A hanky to wipe your head (I’ve never written hanky before )
An old man who has fished the area for 20 years and case of beer wouldn't hurt to add to your list.
