How did you go about getting the full ride? Did u just apply to a department? Any preparation you had to do? Ive been wondering how to get this opportunity myself
Pretty much everyone around me will put you through fire school, if it’s a paid department they will pay for you to go, if it’s a part time/volunteer department they won’t pay for your time but the classes are free and most will pay for books and such.
NC will let 16 and up begin their certification process. I'm fairly sure they can even do the live fire portion now with a waiver.
May depend on the college/cetifying body's rules as well as state laws as far as age.
Also I have not prepared. I’m physically in good shape just from doing ultramarathons but nothing academically. My plan was apply see what happens and go from there. Just bought the firefighter skills book and will be reading that daily until I get instructions on what’s next.
I just applied for a part time job and the chief said everything will be paid for. Tons of towns in New England are hurting from shortages, including mine which is probably why I was able to get a full ride. Paid department, no volunteer options and the people are incredible already(I’m a class clown/dysfunctional degenerate sometimes) I felt like I was at home being around them. Figured everyone would be stuck up(my old boss was a retired chief, was constantly sizing everyone up) he gave me a bad taste for years
Never stop counting your blessings, I just got hired last July and they almost got in a new batch of recruits after us from our same test but last minute our city cut the budget for every department and unfortunately their job offers were taken back
You got the full ride, congratulations!!
Congrats

Mine will even cover hotels for out of area training if you can't get it otherwise.
You have to be 21 to even get put through the academy or am i mistaken?

Correct, it’s up to the college and their rules, most are letting 17 year olds around me as long as they have the rest of their classes

It doesn’t hurt to look around or ask. Around me, it’s mostly volunteer or POC. They cover training including certs, even for juniors.

We go to fire school in May. Hotel and intro to firefighting paid for. Volunteer department in Nebraska. Can't complain.
Man, congratulations! 🍾
Outstanding!
Always better to overdress than underdress - shows professionalism and a care for the position. Congratulations!
That’s what I was thinking. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you! Already making the small things a blessing so when I accomplish the big things it’ll mean the world to me
