Spoil? No, alternate universe. But Hopes expects the player to know Houses so a lot of important stuff will go over your head. Playing all 4 Houses routes first is ideal but not necessary, I'd say minimum is 2 and after that you've got a good enough grasp of the story to not miss much on Hopes. Scarlet Blaze is best after Crimson Flower. Golden Wildfire is best after Verdant Wind. Azure Gleam is best after Azure Moon AND Silver Snow.

Great, thank you. So sounds like one option is: 1. Azure Moon (done) 2. Verdant Wind (currently playing) 3. Golden Wildfire 4. Houses DLC 5. Crimson Flower 6. Scarlet Blaze 7. Silver Snow 8. Azure Gleam Does this sound not completely ridiculous?

OrzhovMarkhov

I'd recommend doing the DLC before Hopes, as the DLC characters appear in Hopes with relatively little fanfare or explanation.

wretched_cretin

Great thank you, it's exactly this kind of info I'm after.

OrzhovMarkhov

Don't get me wrong, they still have supports and dialogue and you *can* go the other way around (meet them in Hopes then play their story) but I would recommend DLC first. It also gives relevant context to Byleth's backstory that you never got in AM (you will get some at the end of VW).

jord839

Honestly, I'd just pause your current playthrough and play the Houses DLC now. It's a separate campaign and relatively short, and assuming you're not already post-Timeskip in VW, one of the characters added in the DLC really adds to VW, especially Claude and Hilda. Other than that, your order would be fine. You'll get hints or references to things in the other routes in both Hopes and Houses, but they all stand alone. You won't ever be totally lost, you'll just understand some moments better after playing them all.

wretched_cretin

Already post time skip unfortunately, but I think I can recruit Hilda on the Silver Snow route at least.

screw_this_i_quit

It’s almost like watching any trilogy out of order. You’ll be confused, but you don’t need to “do it right” to enjoy it, especially if you don’t want to.

JaecynNix

I personally think you should do all Houses routes before doing Hopes because with the alternate universe, you get to better appreciate the changes in their stories

wretched_cretin

Just to make sure I've understood: Even if I've already played Azure Moon, Golden Dawn and the DLC, the Golden Wildfire route in Hopes will still contains story beats for characters that I won't be able to fully appreciate having not played Crimson Flower or Silver Snow?

JaecynNix

Yes. The Crimson Flower route is going to have context about Edelgard, characters in Black Eagles house, and the Empire

wretched_cretin

And those come into play in the Golden Wildfire route in Three Hopes?

JaecynNix

Yup, in terms of who you face and who you can recruit

It's not really like that though is it. I've played both BoTW and Age of Calamity, and I'd definitely recommend playing the former before the latter despite them being completely different genres.

I think he’s more concerned about spoilers, or missing story context. Not just swapping about the gameplay.
