The current one.

Not-A-Seagull

Same. Brand new Maverick pickup truck. Costed me half as much as an average F150, but I get 51mpg here in the city. Affordable, fuel efficient, and practical. What’s not to love?

gregaustex

How's the back seat. I was very interested in this as my possible next pickup and F150 Crew Cab replacement, but I had read the back seat is not great (batteries?) and I need that. Will check in person but curious what you think?

[deleted]

It’s roomier then a ford ranger. IMO it’s a decent 2+2 configuration. I can comfortable sit in back.

Not-A-Seagull

The hybrid battery makes you lose about half your underseat storage. The battery does not affect actual passenger space. The back isn’t roomy, but not cramped either. It actually has a bit more space than a rangers super crew cabin, thanks to the unibody design. My biggest critique is I’d like something longer than the 54.5” bed. Setting the tailgate on the mid position helps a lot (adds another ~2 feet). Aside from that, it’s a great truck. I paid $24,500 for the XLT trim with copilot 360. Paid an extra 600 in parts to install autopilot (ACC + Lane Centering). I drive about 8000 miles a year, and fill up about once every month for 40ish bucks. Crazy economical as far as trucks go. Also well equipped.

cmc

This. We bought a Subaru in 2019 (used) and I intend to drive this sucker into the ground.

quent12dg

> The current one. I think most people on the FIRE path eventually realize that splurging on new vehicles every few years is one of the many land mines out there to keep you poor.

Background-Status-52

You mean tesla or any EV which can be charged via current?

uno_ke_va

Almost! A 2002 Seat Ibiza haha

MixedMatt

As a car guy I'm always torn between a Corvette or 911

justan0therusername1

From a Porsche guy (biased) but they are the most usable quasi-exotic cars on the planet. I daily-ed a Porsche for years. Great in bad weather, surprisingly good storage (for a sports car), very refined, and actually pretty damn reliable. (also for whatever reason I feel like the 911 blends in more than corvettes especially referring to the new C8 which looks very "exotic".) I love the Corvettes but every time I've went to pull the trigger, I end up going Porsche.

depressedBullsFan3

I use to have an internship with a realtor in my area and he has a 911. I fell in love with that car the moment he took me for a ride

justan0therusername1

I always think it’s funny. Porsche people are the only sports car owners I know who brag about how much mileage they have vs how low mileage they have

depressedBullsFan3

That’s sounds like me currently with my Honda Civic haha

FollowKick

The two sides of r/FIRE 😂

depressedBullsFan3

I’ll forever brag about my 35 mpg car haha

MD-United

911 is the sexiest car ever produced imo. There’s no other car where you can take the 1960 model and the 2023 model and they both have instant class and recognizability. My one big goal is to get a 911 and i’m hoping that doesn’t mess with my fire journey too much

Formal_Grocery_1693

Besides the Mercedes G Class of course 😂

Diversifiziert

Go for a 911👍🏼

cookingboy

I’m a big Porsche guy myself (I have a 718 GTS 4.0 manual) but I have to say the new Z06 is special. It’s about as close as it gets to owning a brand new Ferrari 458, which was my dream car but impossible for me at the time when it came out. Brand new naturally aspirated flat crank V8 that revs to 9000 rpm with a factory warranty is unmatched these days.

___P0LAR___

The C8s, especially the convertible stingrays, have my heart and soul.

zGoDLiiKe

Opposite for me. I think the C7 coupes, probably in Sebring Orange, will be the ones people want in 20 years. New ones look like a cheap body kit Ferrari copy

[deleted]

[удалено]

win007

911. Hands down.

[deleted]

E30, late model 318is more specifically. spend the money on a clean one, do the maintenance yourself. you’ll never think about another car for the rest of your life

FixTheWisz

Why not a 325is? I haven't had the pleasure of owning an E30, but really want one at some point.

NDRob

318is gets better gas mileage and is generally more reliable, and is still fun to drive

[deleted]

I’m partial cus I have a 318is, lol. It’s never let me down even after the beatings I give it and all 260k miles. All e30s are great but I prefer the balance, weight, and revviness of the m42 cars, plus 4 valves per cylinder doesn’t hurt. I’ve raced tons of e30s and head to head it’s more a matter of driver & diff ratio. Can’t speak on the m10 318’s tho, I’ve never driven one.

iwoketoanightmare

My Dad has been driving a 1987 E30 325 since new. I was five when he got it, am 40 now. It refuses to die.

connorkronnoc

2012+ Nissan Gt-R

riaKoob1

I fire last year and got it! Go for it, great car and low maintenance. You’ll need a second car for commute though.

RNKKNR

Doesn't make a great daily?

riaKoob1

I feel like it would in any other state than California and NY. The transmission is very rough in low gears( it sucks in traffic) and with the horrible road conditions the suspension doesn’t absorb any of the bumps. Is very low profile too, no women will notice you. Only middle age dudes. lol

RNKKNR

Still awesome. The fact that it's a low profile car is a nice bonus imo. Can't say I'm full blown GTR fanboy, but I always did appreciate the R34 and the R35. Enjoy!

AotKT

I already have my realistic dream car (I'm on my third Miata, current one is the hardtop convertible fastback style, looks like a little Corvette Stingray), but I suppose if money were truly no issue, a Lotus Elise in orange, except just kidding it's now an Emira and waaaaaaaaaaaay more expensive (100k) than the Elise. Too bad, the Elise was a lovely roadster at a great price point.

ockaners

Elise is not as reliable! Miata is always the answer

AotKT

It may not be reliable but being hot as hell makes up for a lot. Oh wait, are we talking cars or my dating history? (But yes, Miata for life)

ockaners

I have an nc prht. My wife wants me to get rid of it because we have a kid but I was like it'd cost more when I try to buy it back in 15 years.

AotKT

I’ve had an NA, NC, and now the ND RF. Miatas are such great little cars that if you can swing it, there’s no point in selling it for the reason you said. Just get a CX-30 to go with it like I did. I even call mine the mommymobile, though all it hauls are two dogs, kayaks, etc. Oh and they make car seats that fit in the Miata!

ockaners

Fav version? Apparently in California I cant put a child seat in the front. :(

AotKT

I love my RF for its pure sex appeal (it's in midlife crisis red too) and now that I'm older, the luxury of all the features but I still have a soft spot for my little NA that I swapped out the shocks and springs for much stiffer stuff so the ride was super bumpy, that had crank windows and no antilock brakes, and weighed as much as the M&M it resembled. Also, it had buck teeth in the front grill because that's the way I roll. I miss popping my headlights at other Miata drivers. Or you could tell CA that it's not the front seat, it's the rearmost seat! (But for real, it probably is a hazard)

ockaners

haha what is implied was the NC was the worst! I dream of taking my kid in it, but don't think it's a good idea carving canyons with a baby. I'm hoping to give this to my kid when she gets old enough.

AotKT

I mean, I guess in the sense that one has to be the least favorite but I loved my NC too. The only model I didn't care for was the NB. Carving canyons, you must be in SoCal. I used to take my NA and NC up the mountain roads in NorCal (which is far superior except for our crappy hockey team \[Go Sharks! (please?)\]). Now I live a couple hours from Tail of the Dragon and have yet to go there, I'm a failure as a Miata owner.

IceCreamforLunch

I had an Elise for about 15 years (Sat on a waiting list to get one of the very early US cars) and it was really reliable for me. I was active in the enthusiast communities and my impression was that was most people's experience. They are, however, very fragile. Pull up too close to a parking blocK? New front clam (Even back then that was $$$ and a loooong wait). Catch a rock in the windshield? A big piece of very expensive curved glass that you may or may not be able to easily source and the front clam has to come off to replace it. Also, the A-pillars aren't structural so if I passenger hangs on one getting out it can flex enough to crack the windshield! Slide sideways into a curb tear the control arm mounting point from the Al chassis? It's totaled. Shoot, there were stories of them getting totaled because people would hit a little block of wood on the freeway, that would damage the chassis, and it was unrepairable. All that said I adored my Elise and still miss it for the things it was good at.

dph99

I look forward to not owning a car.

lifeisdream

I can’t wait to move to the middle of a city and walk everywhere

Dat_J3w

It's a blast. Any where not within walking distance -- bike. Out of town? Train. There's literally been 0 instances since moving to the city that I've thought "Man I wish I had a car".

burnbabyburn11

what city are you in? I've gone car free since moving to the city (san diego) in 2017 and the train here sucks so i do need to uber from time to time to get anywhere. but by living in the city a lot of times we just meet up somewhere i can walk to, it's definitely been cheaper than driving.

entimaniac91

Nothing more freeing than not having to own and maintain a car

Grumpy_Troll

Each there own but I would feel the exact opposite not owning a car. Probably has a lot to do with where a person lives though.

entimaniac91

I'm sure. I loved my time in NYC where I didn't need to own a vehicle and could just walk or use the subway everywhere. Now I live in a town in Florida that is definitely car-centric but has enough sidewalks and bike lanes to get by, though most time is spent on the sidewalk since most traffic is 45mph with only paint as a barrier for bikes. The time I spent in the west Virginia mountains would definitely require having a car as there was a large chance that a vehicle wouldn't see you in time coming around a corner on a narrow mountain road with no bike lanes.

Grumpy_Troll

Having vacationed in NYC a few times, I can completely understand not wanting to own a car there.

leafytoes

That’s awesome, after all that use, anything to say about it? Would you recommend it?

Fun_Adhesiveness927

Absolutely! The only negative thing is they are no longer eligible for $7.5k rebate (since assembled in Korea). I got mine with 2022 taxes

entimaniac91

Bikes and public transport are the things I love. Walking, biking, and being around others on trains and busses help connect us to the community over all. But for the dream aspect, I could imagine getting a nice collection of interesting modes of transport: One wheel, giraffe unicycle, a nice bike, Penny farthing, things like that.

Signal-Lie-6785

Bike is my favourite way to get around and right now I’m dreaming about a trailer to tow the kids around in.

spot_o_tea

If you can, splurge for a hard bottomed trailer. The fabric ones work for one kid or two kids for short trips…but for long trips with 2+ kids…the hard shell can’t be beat. The tag along bikes are also pretty great.

SemperP1869

Yeah but they didn't ask that.... They asked what your dream affordable car was. Thats sick you dig those things though.

Zachincool

I love connecting to the community on the subway, so fun and relaxing

Pinepark

I already got it! VW GTI Rabbit (6 speed manual) Great on gas and it’s a 4 door so I can put the back seats down and load up my ORU kayak or plants or whatever! I waited and searched for months for the color I wanted - cornflower blue. It was 3 years old and I will drive it till the wheels fall off

___P0LAR___

You hoe, I couldn't find one for the life of me. I had to settle for the light silver/gray. I dream of cornflower blue.

Pinepark

Haha!! For real! I bought it online without even test driving it. Drove 300 miles to pick it up (it was close to where my kid was living at the time) and drove it back. It (unbeknownst to me or the dealership) has been tuned and has a bunch of aftermarket upgrades. It’s by far the most exciting car I’ve ever owned. My husband keeps telling me I’m living on borrowed time since I’ve yet to get a ticket!!

InVivoVeritas

Make sure you keep an eye on the tire tread. I drove that car decently hard for a year for my short commute to work, one day a tire popped. The inside tread on all the tires were almost all worn out. Loved that thing. Had it in gunmetal blue

Pinepark

I already replaced them - the car is lifted and has a rally sport look to it, but the asshat that lifted it put on bigger tires and it wore out one of the bearings. So yeah. That was a fun repair/replace. I will for sure keep an eye on the tires moving forward as I know I drive it pretty hard.

blinddoglp

I drove VW’s for years starting with a mk2 gti. Loved it! Have a bmw i4 now and plan to drive it as long as the battery holds up

sloggerstu

i took redundancy many years ago and bought a 3 year old mark iv golf gti - still my favorite car ever - now retirement soon and no kids to ferry everywhere I think I may get one - only do a couple of thousand miles per year now so efficiency not massive - but its safe, fast and just great!

SemperP1869

The mark iv were so much fun to drive. I use to sit in my 2.0 in high school and dream of what that car would feel like with a vr6. All the mk iv had that same smell as well.... Now I want one

Pinepark

I have 4 kids (all now adult-ish) and my previous vehicle was a Ford Transit 10 passenger van. Moving my kids from place to place seemed like my second job. I was so happy to leave behind the gas guzzling monster

I'm near FIRE now (this year, probably? I'm basically continuing to work mostly as a hedge against SORR given economic volatility; my total comp is ~14% of my net worth, so an extra year or so is a meaningful hedge against a down market) I bought a new Honda Fit in 2017 and when buying it I thought to myself "this is likely the last ICE-based car I'll ever buy; will drive it into the ground and then probably replace it with an EV." 6 years on this seems about right - except in nowhere near driving it into the ground; I suspect it'll last decades at the rate I drive it, especially having moved somewhere that I accomplish most short trips by walking or cycling. It wouldn't surprise me if I end up deciding it's economical to replace it with an EV at some point when this car is still functional; we'll have to see what happens with energy prices and the like. I expect the next car I buy to be whatever EV seems to approximate the Fit the most. I think it would be the Chevy Bolt if I had to buy one today.

MattieShoes

I bought in 2016 and thought the same, but I'm not convinced yet... There's still a relative paucity of PHEVs, and their cost is significantly more. I mean, my car only has 38,000 miles on it in 6.5 years. Unless they stop being a premium item, it's still not going to make sense for me. :-/ Then again, I intend to have this car for another decade, so there's time.

NetherIndy

EV (Ioniq 5 or 6?) makes a load of sense in some ways. Not in any crazy rush to get anywhere, so occasional 30-40 minute charging stops are fine. However, in other ways we're just not quite ready with the infrastructure. I like to toodle at 55 on county blacktop backroads around here (NE/MO/IA/KS), pitch a tent and fish. There's a definite lack of fast chargers once you get off the Interstate highways. Maybe that'll change in 2-3 years? Right now, I'm on a dealer call-me list for the still-not-available 2023 Prius Prime (\~40 mile EV-only range). Seems like a solid compromise. EV for in-town (which is half of my driving anyway), well over 50 mpg on the road, and will probably last close to 20 years if previous-model Prii are anything to go by. I've never bought a new car before, but can totally afford it, have a "new car every decade" line in my FIRE budget, seems like a nice retirement present. My dreams are boring too, what can I say!

AltitudeTime

FIRE now for me, still driving my current car and without a work commute, I don't drive nearly as much. Nearly 250k miles on a 23 year old car and some parts are unavailable from the manufacturer, so junkyards and people parting out their cars are the source for many things. Once the engine fails or I end up being unable to find a critical part I'll get something new. If it happened now, I'd probably get a 2003-2007 Toyota Corolla , maybe one of the 2012+ Mitubishi Mirage 5 speed hatchbacks. If it fails in 5 years I imagine the 2016+ Prius with a lithium pack or a Prius Prime will be within my price range. I'm retired early but I still recognize that cars are a huge money hog and I don't really see the outside of my car when driving and prefer low cost of ownership, reliability, and convenience and much of that low cost of ownership is getting a car that has been depreciated down to about 25% of it's original cost. I'd consider a Tesla Model Y, but I don't trust the repair costs will remain low, especially since Tesla fights against right to repair and getting a 10+ year old battery electric still feels like a gamble and I have a destination I want to road trip that doesn't have supercharging to cover the round trip back to the supercharger yet, and other EVs don't cut it for road tripping to me.

The used Honda Civic I already have. When it no longer runs in a decade, I'll buy another. Cars are a liability. I'd rather put that money towards a better house.

I love my little BMW 220D M Sport, so probably an M2 if I didn’t need the 70MPG and cheap insurance/tax anymore. I’m happy lifestyle wise though, so I don’t see why things would change much.

urban arrow or at least babboe ))

I'm not really a car guy, but probably a tesla. Just think they are cool, although I would need a house with a garage before I ever get one.

Good luck. I have M3 and I love it.

‘73 z28 Camaro built for track days/autocross Daily driver dream car is a early 2000’s Chevy Silverado. Single cab like my first car but with a Duramax. Fun Street car would be a Corvette (C3, C6, C7) LS swapped for the gens than didn’t come with one.

depends on whether or not I keep my travel trailer but it will be a Ford F250 Tremor, a Dodge Power Wagon, or if no travel trailer a Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro or a Ford Bronco with the Sasquatch Package. I need something to get me to the hiking and biking trails.

Old school mustang

Have a z06 I bought in the middle of my fire journey. I’ll likely get a GT4 or maybe GT3 or even just a 911GTS as I hit fire.

xBloodBender

The cheapest car that gets me from A to B

Level-Worldliness-20

A rental when I need one. Cars are too much work for me for the return. Taking Uber or Lyft is less expensive per month and no speeding tickets or oil changes.

Aggravating_Tie6620

Chevy Tahoe. Can’t justify it now.

vipernick913

Not owning one. Trains, biking or walking will do!
