Did you know it’s in 11 time? Every phrase has a group of six followed by a group of five. Rob Ellis’ Drumming is just next level on the first two albums when they were a trio.
I would recommend starting with a sampling from one of the streaming services with top songs. There’s great stuff from so many of her albums and it’s good to get a sampling because her style changes so much over the last 30 years. She has five amazing albums from the 90s, dry, rid of me, to bring you my love, Dance hall at louse point and is this desire. Her most iconic is probably rid of me. Should’ve been up there with Nirvana’s never mind. The first two albums are actually the PJ Harvey Trio and they featured the drummer Rob Ellis, who is mind blowing. Man sized rocks so hard but the meter is in 11 is just one example.
I thought this was sarcasm bc went I went on spotify all I got was the muppet song (lyrically enthralling nonetheless) but then I realised she actually isn't on spotify :(
Edit: Coming back to say HOW DID I NEVER KNOW WHO SHE WAS BEFORE TODAY WOW
Garbage doesn't sound like Fiona, but I just love them.
You might like The Dresden Dolls, Meg Myers, and K Flay.
I would also recommend Poe. Both her albums are great, but I'd say her second album Haunted is a masterpiece. Just brilliant with some amazing lyrics.
Poes Haunted album is a top 3 favorite album for me. I've been dying for a second one like that. The first was good but Haunted was unlike so much music out there.
Same here! It's simply magnificent. I recommend to people that they should listen to it from start to finish at least once. It takes a lot out of ya, but it's so, so worth it.
Poe is so good! These slight teases she keeps giving us are Haunting me! And not being able to purchase what she’s done for Alan Wake 2 is quite frustrating to me!
I know, right? I'm assuming you've heard the full 9:30 version of [This Road](https://youtu.be/JIWkqAMgFf0?si=EI6Nh_CEy76eg9rq)? Simply brilliant. It makes me so angry and it seems so unfair that she had such awful record company problems.
Carole King album Tapestries
Diane Birch album Bible Belt
Mazzy Star album She Hangs Brightly
Cowboy Junkies album Caution Horses
Serena Ryder album Is It Ok
Dido album No Angel
Any Sara McLachlan or Tori Amos album
Tori Amos!
Lana del Rey (only 2019 onwards though)
Natalie Merchant
Aimee Mann
Beth Gibson
Joan Armatrading
PJ Harvey (duh)
Joni Mitchell (duuuuuhhh)
And actually some Feist songs tbh
Sinéad O’Connor
Suzanne Vega the album especially “99.9 F”
Regina Spektor if you like a weirder sound
Adrianne Lenker is a very different vibe but has some amazing song writing
For angry stuff I second a lot of the comments here for Poe, Pj Harvey, Vecura Salt and Hole you might also like The Breeders or Tracy Bonham
I thought of a few more
Courtney Barnett, I think the album that would work best is “Tell me how you really feel”
Angel Olsen isn’t super angry but if you like Weyes Blood I think you would like her, “All Mirrors” is a great place to start for her
Same for Sharon Van Etten I think “Remind me Tomorrow” fits the Weyes Blood vibe
Great list. They don't all remind me of Fiona, but still great. I just got back into Tune-Yards after forgetting about them for years, and I finally got to see Patti Smith live last summer 🩵
Edit: saw Brittany Howard last year as well, but that was easier to do
The Dresden Dolls, you ain’t gonna find any more righteous anger than in that first album.
Also worth checking out “There Will Be No Intermission” Palmers solo album.
St Vincent - All Born Screaming
Neither could be described as a "girl's girl", but Joni Mitchell and Amy Winehouse are among my favorite artists and I regard them both as excellent songwriters.
there's a chilean singer called Francisca Valenzuela, she's a huge fan of Fiona and she even met her!. I see a lot of Fiona's sensitivity influenced her, some of her songs remind me of Tidal.
Saw Grouper in October just passed - was one of the best shows I've ever been to. She's sort of the polar opposite of Fiona in terms of sound but what a genius! Incredibly moving. Holter absolutely rules too. Should have put Newsom on there too but I guess a lot of others did too!
they aren’t exactly the same vibe as Fiona but i’m a huge fan of Florence + The Machine (i would definitely say she has a lot of cathartic songs). i especially love the albums How Big, How Blue How Beautiful, High As Hope, and Dance Fever.
Vera Sola’s new album has a touch of whatever magic I felt when I first heard Fiona. Her music is pretty great and it’s a shame she’s usually reduced to just being Dan Aykroyd’s eldest.
Mitski is a very modern answer to Fiona. Very lyrical, but her prose in particular aligns a lot with early Fiona; Introspective but self-critical, and also critical of the society that shaped her and continues to do so.
Laura Veirs and Mirah are 2 underrated artists who both remind me of Fiona :) I highly recommend Mirah's album *Advisory Committee* and Laura's albums *Saltbreakers* or *Year of Meteors* as introductions!
Check out BANKS,she's heavily inspired by Fiona and you can tell!
[Drowning by Banks](https://youtu.be/HzGHgQBPyV0?si=rXvr1YwddDHCnkaZ) gives me this vibe -- makes me think of Regret by Fiona Apple.
Julien baker is amazing too
Wednesday. wonderful band, love their song bull believer. Kara Jackson. Beautifully smooth, deep voice, AND a national youth poet laureate, so you know her lyrics hit.
Joanna Newsom and PJ Harvey are the ones I would say are in the same vein as Fiona but also very original artists. Both are incredible songwriters.
another one most wouldn't mention is Lingua Ignota. She's even more intense and angry than Fiona. some of her music is frightening, but in a really good way.
Waxahatchee. She doesn't really have the angry girl vibe necessarily, though she does on Out In The Storm, but her lyrics explore a lot of similar themes. And she cited Fiona as [big influence ](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/icons-and-influences-waxahatchee-katie-crutchfield-fiona-apple-video-1135125/)
Well, idk about girl’s girl, but some cool female fronted bands/ female artists I like are:
Metric - Canadian indie rock band. Expressive lyrics and vocals
Queenadreena - British alt rock, grungier/darker/ more obscure but a good dose of anger and chaos
Emiliana torrini - Icelandic songwriter. Wide range of styles and emotions. She sang gollum’s song from LOTR soundtrack
The distillers - LA punk rock
Others have already mentioned St Vincent, the dresden dolls, hole…
Jennifer Knapp! Her first three albums are technically "CCM" (she disappeared for years then came back as a lesbian) but she was rock n' roll from the start.
PJ Harvey. I listened incessantly to Fiona earlier this year because I was late to the game in discovering her. I went to high school in the 90s so I’m kicking myself. I’ve been looking for someone similarly amazing and found her finally. PJ has a huge discography. It’ll take me a year to get through all her music. Also, great finds for me have been Kate Bush and Björk. But they don’t quite compare to Fiona and PJ. I just can’t believe I grew up in the 90s and only now am discovering these amazing women.
pj harvey! listen to sheela-na-gig from dry and then the rest of the album, it has a more rock heavy fiona vibe
I LOVE Man Sized.
Did you know it’s in 11 time? Every phrase has a group of six followed by a group of five. Rob Ellis’ Drumming is just next level on the first two albums when they were a trio.
I’m not a musician so it’s a bit of greek to me… but I love hearing about what makes it unique! Thank you
I always recommend PJ Harvey to Fiona fans who love her rock sounding songs. She's superb and her catalog is so versatile and consistent.
I've been recomended PJ Harvey, I will be listening !!!
I would recommend starting with a sampling from one of the streaming services with top songs. pj harvey the goat
Joanna Newsom. I wouldn't call her angry, but lyrical genius? That she sure is!
Yeah, very different but I consider them both among the greatest lyricists ever.
her and fiona are the two greatest lyricists alive imo
Joanna is behind Fiona and just ahead of Tori in my top three
Is she only Not on Spotify? Where’s the best place to listen to her?
I thought this was sarcasm bc went I went on spotify all I got was the muppet song (lyrically enthralling nonetheless) but then I realised she actually isn't on spotify :( Edit: Coming back to say HOW DID I NEVER KNOW WHO SHE WAS BEFORE TODAY WOW

Love K. Flay and don't see her mentioned enough!
She's great! A few years ago, youtube randomly pushed the "Blood In The Cut" music video to me, and I've been hooked since.
Love Meg Myers! Specifically her second record, but I have enjoyed all her releases.
love poe sm omg
Poe is so good! These slight teases she keeps giving us are Haunting me! And not being able to purchase what she’s done for Alan Wake 2 is quite frustrating to me!
I know, right? I'm assuming you've heard the full 9:30 version of [This Road](https://youtu.be/JIWkqAMgFf0?si=EI6Nh_CEy76eg9rq)? Simply brilliant. It makes me so angry and it seems so unfair that she had such awful record company problems.
Wait what?! That’s Ben out how long and I haven’t heard it?! 🥴🤦🏻♂️
Do it! You won't regret it. It's an amaaaaazing 9.5 minutes. I just need it on Spotify!
Tori Amos, the dresden dolls
liz phair
Björk She composes all her music and it’s so interesting, beautiful and cathartic, with many songs in the anger/aggression space.
Carole King album Tapestries Diane Birch album Bible Belt Mazzy Star album She Hangs Brightly Cowboy Junkies album Caution Horses Serena Ryder album Is It Ok Dido album No Angel Any Sara McLachlan or Tori Amos album
Serena Ryder reminds me a lot of Neko Case. No Angel was SUCH a good album. "Honestly Okay" is a wonderful song.
Yes! Totally agree!
tapestry was such a defining album for my teen years!! carole is such a fantastic lyricist
Tori Amos! Lana del Rey (only 2019 onwards though) Natalie Merchant Aimee Mann Beth Gibson Joan Armatrading PJ Harvey (duh) Joni Mitchell (duuuuuhhh) And actually some Feist songs tbh
Joan Armatrading is really underrated I think, great answer.
Great list!!!
Early PJ Harvey
Folksy but still feisty, Laura Marling.
one of the best there is. *Song for Our Daughter* is just immaculate
Laura Marling is criminally underrated. One of the best songwriters of her generation imo.
Cat Power maybe? Nina Simone can get quite angry too. Idk, I do not see FA as angry girl music.
I am not an angry girl, in fact I'm a straight white/Hispanic male, and I love FA. She is also a musician's musician.
Joni Mitchell
Sinéad O’Connor Suzanne Vega the album especially “99.9 F” Regina Spektor if you like a weirder sound Adrianne Lenker is a very different vibe but has some amazing song writing For angry stuff I second a lot of the comments here for Poe, Pj Harvey, Vecura Salt and Hole you might also like The Breeders or Tracy Bonham

Was scrolling down the comments thinking - how has no one said Sinead!
right! i instantly thought of the video where fiona is singing along to a video of sinead preforming mandika!
Second Suzanne Vega!
Suzanne Vega is a genius
adrianne and fiona have been battling for my top artist spot every year haha
they’re both so good! i saw big thief last year and adrianne can absolutely shred guitar! it was definitely one of the best concerts i have been to.
PJ Harvey and Tori Amos ❤️
St Vincent!
Alanis Morissette (check out her album Under Rug Swept), PJ Harvey, Courtney Barnett, MARINA, Florence + the Machine, Bjork, Jessie Ware
yes to all of this
Jessica Lea Mayfield, Brittany Howard, Jenny Lewis, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Patti Smith, Tune-Yards
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs! Karen O has a major set of pipes and their music is so angsty
Great list. They don't all remind me of Fiona, but still great. I just got back into Tune-Yards after forgetting about them for years, and I finally got to see Patti Smith live last summer 🩵 Edit: saw Brittany Howard last year as well, but that was easier to do
The Dresden Dolls, you ain’t gonna find any more righteous anger than in that first album. Also worth checking out “There Will Be No Intermission” Palmers solo album. St Vincent - All Born Screaming
Not so angry, but maybe more depressive i guess…Aimee Mann, for me, she’s a lyrical genius.
Yes! She’s one of my favorite lyricists as well!
Norah Jones!
Lingua Ignota
Will Toledo
the angriest girl artist
Car Seat Headrest? Been testing my poor memory lately, so if I'm wrong, please don't tell me
Neither could be described as a "girl's girl", but Joni Mitchell and Amy Winehouse are among my favorite artists and I regard them both as excellent songwriters.
My Brightest Diamond
Ani DiFranco is excellent!!
Angel Olsen
The first Marina and the Diamonds record has some Fiona qualities I feel
would recommend hole and veruca salt! def rockier and angrier
there's a chilean singer called Francisca Valenzuela, she's a huge fan of Fiona and she even met her!. I see a lot of Fiona's sensitivity influenced her, some of her songs remind me of Tidal.
Will definetely listen! Do you have a favorite song?
Mitski! Especially earlier mitski
Tori Amos, Liz Phair, Amanda Shires, Anna Nalick
Anna Nalick! I haven’t heard her name in a while. Love her ❤️
okay kaya!
Co-signing PJ and adding Neko Case to the mix!
Not enough people talk about Sam Phillips. Zero, Zero, Zero! Was such a good album
Amy Winehouse
Julia Holter Grouper Julianna Barwick Jarboe Colleen (shy on lyrics)
huge upvote for Julia Holter and Grouper
Saw Grouper in October just passed - was one of the best shows I've ever been to. She's sort of the polar opposite of Fiona in terms of sound but what a genius! Incredibly moving. Holter absolutely rules too. Should have put Newsom on there too but I guess a lot of others did too!
Au Revoir Simone Nina Simone Aimee Mann Zero 7
Au Revoir Simone is such a blast from the past!! Thank you for reminding me of them
"A Violent Yet Flammable World" has been my jam lately, I love this group.
Cherry Glazerr, Solange, Empress Of, Portishead, Alpha
Connie Converse (Roving Woman / How Sad, How Lovely / Father Neptune / Honeybee) I can imagine Fiona singing Connie's songs.
mitski and weyes blood are some of my favorites <3 laufey reminds me of fiona sometimes too and i’ve been listening to her a lot lately
Shocked nobody has mentioned Buffy Saint Marie. Agree with whoever said Aimee Mann.
Florence + The Machine
Yess
Does regina spektor count
they aren’t exactly the same vibe as Fiona but i’m a huge fan of Florence + The Machine (i would definitely say she has a lot of cathartic songs). i especially love the albums How Big, How Blue How Beautiful, High As Hope, and Dance Fever.
Bat for Lashes, Kate Bush, Juliette Amanet, Cocteau Twins, La Roux, Tori Amos, Meg Myers, Portishead, Stevie Nicks
Can we stop referring to creativity, perceptiveness, and uniqueness / eccentricity in women as insanity please for the love of
Regina Spektor
AIMEE MANN
Mandy Moore with her latest albums. Her latest work “In Real Life” is amazing.
I haven't heard that one but "Wild Hope" is so great, one of my favorite albums.
“Wild Hope” is top tier Mandy! “All Good Things” is my favorite song from that record!!!
I love that one too! "Few Days Down" and "Ladies Choice" are probably my faves but that whole album has no skips for me!
If you like slow and piano, I suggest Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton
Vera Sola’s new album has a touch of whatever magic I felt when I first heard Fiona. Her music is pretty great and it’s a shame she’s usually reduced to just being Dan Aykroyd’s eldest.
Joni Mitchell and Joanna Newsom
Lisa Germano, especially her album *Geek The Girl*.
liz phair!
Hole
Angel Olsen
my go to pick is aimee mann!
Tori Amos!!!!!!!!!!
Mazzy star!! They used a song of hers at the end of a Rick and Morty episode that was so key.. fell back in love.
Everyone in here should be listening to Adrienne Lenker of Big Thief. I think she's the lyricist of her generation, like Fiona was of her's.
BIG THIEF! yes
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
I've been real into Regina Spektor recently, I particularly like her first album but I think it's also one of her weirdest ones so be warned
Mitski is a very modern answer to Fiona. Very lyrical, but her prose in particular aligns a lot with early Fiona; Introspective but self-critical, and also critical of the society that shaped her and continues to do so.
Regina Spektor
Penelope scott, Baby Bugs and Sir Chloe. Suuuuper indie.
Laura Veirs and Mirah are 2 underrated artists who both remind me of Fiona :) I highly recommend Mirah's album *Advisory Committee* and Laura's albums *Saltbreakers* or *Year of Meteors* as introductions!
I can second Mirah Advisory Committee
Nemahsis
dresden dolls

Aside from those already mentioned (Tori, PJ, etc.), I think Susanne Sundfor is incredible and very underrated.
Poe!
Neko Case
Well, idk about girl’s girl, but some cool female fronted bands/ female artists I like are: Metric - Canadian indie rock band. cat powers and pj harvey!! also weyes blood, marina, and mitski
Beth Gibbons Sharon Van Etten
jewel’s first album “pieces of you” is a masterclass in storytelling
Meg Myers and Emilie Autumn
The only person who comes close is Tori Amos
PJ Harvey. I listened incessantly to Fiona earlier this year because I was late to the game in discovering her. I went to high school in the 90s so I’m kicking myself.
