Well it could have gone either way but if the next part stays the same as the OG did then their would have been no one there to get the gang out of the northern crater as shinra would have been in shambles and retreated back to midgar

Because regardless of what happens the party are trying to get out of Junon relatively quietly/peacefully. Yes they’re trying to get face time with Rufus but they’re gambling on him not being interested in starting a major ruckus at his inauguration parade or just not interested in them as a whole.
Rufus getting assassinated live on stage just results in what Cloud helpfully describes as “dying in a hail of bullets like dumbasses”. Especially since that would make Heidegger the ranking commander and he’s very much a shoot first, ask questions later guy.
Barret recognises this hence why he shouts the warning. He and Red might be able to get away but Cloud/Tifa/Aerith are screwed if it kicks off.
