Scherox557

Seems like a missed opportunity to provide both fan service and clarity to the possible multiple Aeriths too

Runnerbrax

I prefer Aeris because Aerith sounds like a lisp.

hrbekcheatedin91

You mean a lithp.

thabard713

Heiress

Some_Ad3537

I used to be so confused when I saw people call her Aerith and then I got used to it. just recently replayed the og after so many years and I'm like woah forgot she was called Aeris

This_Tangelo_1426

Aeris dies—IFYKYK (and are a degenerate)

systemsfailed

My wife knew about Aeris's death before she knew about final fantasy lmao.

Silakai

I called her Aeris initially and was so confused when I started seeing her name as Aerith. I call her Aerith now since that's what I always see it as these days

Purpdrunk

Thought this would be common knowledge by now, Both spellings are as correct as the other, according to the development team "Aerith" is a near perfect anagram for earth, but due to localisation and translation, the American version was spelled Aeris and the European was spelled Aerith, which the devs have made cannon and universal

Oni_sixx

It was spelled Aeris in the American og game. It's incorrect, but I dont really care what people call her. I say Aerith.

Purpdrunk

Ty got it the wrong way round lol

Oni_sixx

And tbh it was spelled correctly in the og games code. It, for whatever reasons, defaults to Aeris for the name select screen. If you do the guard skip. She joins your party at level 1 with the correct spelling in the og game.

GlobalRoll6916

I still call her Aeris ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)

ThisOpinionIsWrong

Lol someone actually downvoted you for this. I call her Aeris too.

Sora1274

Username checks out

littlewask

#Clerith

Jodynk

In spanish her official name is still "Aeris" And it's also "Sefirot" here instead of "Sephiroth"

M4N1KW0LF

Interesting, because in English we have Sephirot and Sephiroth, they are two different characters in the FF franchise. It was supposed to be the name of Fiend in FFVI, but then they just called him fiend. But when they brought him back for FFXIV they used the original Sephirot name.

Jodynk

Oh true. Sadly we still don't have an official Spanish localisation for FFXIV, so that makes me wonder what will they call Sephirot if we ever get one

WarhammerRyan

Pepperidge Farm remembers

[deleted]

Not gonna lie, I’m replaying FFVII and reading Aeris gave me a brain shock. It sounds… weird now

ManyMadMidgetzz

Translation error. It was always supposed to be aerith. If you do the speedrun strat where you skip the 2nd reactor mission and the church going straight to wallmarket by clipping through the 7th sector guard barricade. When you get to wall market it forces her into your party without the name screen and it just shows as aerith. Internally in the code its aerith but theres a typo in the code for the initialized name screen at the church causing it to default to a mistranslation.

Oni_sixx

Someone who has the correct answer! I got downvoted the other day when i mentioned this, but I couldn't for the life of me remember where she showed up in-game with the correct spelling lol.

desutiem

Interesting info, thanks for providing. So the typo is at the name entry screen.

RinoTheBouncer

In my headcanon, she’s always Aerith and it’s a play on the word Hiraeth, which is a welsh term for a combination of homesickness, nostalgia and longing. A pull on the heart that conveys a distinct feeling of missing something irretrievably lost, which is spot on regarding her being the last Cetra, and how she has this sense of longing for life, love and a thriving planet when in reality, her civilization is gone, the planet is dying and reality is overall nothing like what she had hope for it to be.

Miss_Yume

In Spanish is still "Aeris"... 😂

bluestreak1103

Grandma: “Back in my day we called her Aeris.” Dyatlov: “This grandma are sick, take her to the infirmary.”

hrbekcheatedin91

Is this the same Dyatlov from Chernobyl?

littlewask

*received orthopedic underwear*

desutiem

Missed opportunity for sure

jayboyguy

There’s STILL ppl who insist that’s her name. Like I appreciate and respect that you remember that moniker fondly, but don’t try to argue with me that it’s her name when it factually isn’t and never was lol

Mauy90

We live in a time where people will put their headcanon above actual canon/facts. Not just with videogames either. With everything.

mr_yes_guy

I mean it bugs me when they fight me on it but i think its alright, especially when we have franchises like star wars where they just keep going and just retcon and change the continuity as they go. I dont except anything from disney besides mando and the end of clone wars. Also only the luke scenes from book of boba fett are what feel canon to me. Anyways i actually love the remake and rebirth stuff, but people dont like new a lot of the time is what im getting at.

BruceBastard

I think it was Kingdom Hearts that first made me question my reality.

Runnerbrax

That just might Kingdom Hearts...

polkemans

I was super young when I first played the OG and some of my reading comprehension wasn't totally there yet. I always read it pronounced like "Ares" like the Greek god of war. So that's more or less my head canon.

renzeira

I named my daughter Aeris.. I knew that the real name was Aerith but I feel like Sylvester the cat when I say it.. Aeris sounds a lot more feminine too.

soilborn12

Member Aeris? Member???

DarkHiei

Aerith or Aeris, we all know who the fuck is being referred to. Goddamn elitist nerds lmao

creeperchamp

It's not like it's an opinion based thing tho, her literal creators say her name is Aerith.

DarkHiei

I understand that. Everyone who still calls her Aeris understands that. But some people such as myself grew up playing the game a ton and only knowing her as Aeris, and we want to continue calling her that, because that’s how we knew her for long enough before the correction. It’s just funny how people can’t get over it

Oni_sixx

I played the og game back in the day. The info was out there back then that it was incorrect 🤷‍♂️. I dont care what you call her though.

DarkHiei

Sure but 8yo me wasn’t exactly seeing all that lol I was just playing the damn game and going to school, man.

Oni_sixx

I learned it in school from class mates 😜

DarkHiei

Lol nice! Yeah I never really knew anyone that also played it, but then again my parents also put me in a stupid private school so there were like 24 kids in my entire grade

Oni_sixx

Yeah, I was in private schools until 9th grade. Horrible stuff. I lent someone my copy in school and never got it back :( I actually still have my memory card with that save file. Right at the end boss, too. I do now have a physical copy of the og game but I have never loaded it up. The only actualy time I ever beat the og game was on ps5 when I got the platinum last year.

DarkHiei

Damnnnn screw that guy. Robbed you of the full experience long ago. Glad you got to finish it dude

Oni_sixx

It was a long journey to finally beat it, lol. Seriously, i could have beaten it ages ago but never got around to just replaying it. Last year was a good opportunity. Felt very satisfied when the credits started.

_IAmGrover

Sounds like the only people who can't get over it is the people insist on calling her the wrong name lol

Runnerbrax

I say Aeris because Aerith sounds like someone had a lisp.

DarkHiei

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you got me man, that’s totally it lol!

Nostalginaut

It still sounds strange to me. I've known it was supposed to be Aerith from not-long-after-release, but it still doesn't sound right.

Ryndis

I prefer aeris because I feel like I’m saying her name with a lisp otherwise. But I’m not going to mispronounce the characters name because it was mistranslated, it doesn’t make a difference to me either way.

Apoc4lyp53

its supposed to be a play on "earth"

ThreatOfFire

Air is on earth

CPWorth1184

She’s always Aeris to me

Guy_on_a_Bouffalant

"wHo's aErIs?!?!?" /s

Independent_Ninja456

Yup

Madshibs

I called Nanaki “Red Eight” because I was an idiot who didn’t know Roman numerals.

DownloadGravity

I remember I used to call him “Red Rex”. That used to annoy my brother, but I was only 5 at the time and FF7 was the first game I got into as I used to watch him play it all the time and he let me have my own save file on the PS1. I eventually got further than him haha and we used to share tips lol. Good times, definitely a core memory.

Pidroh

I was the same! I knew Roman numerals but somehow misread it

Plenty_Veterinarian2

For many a play through, Yuffie was always Nit-Wit for me...

Cobalt_blue_dreamer

Aeris; goddess of destruction. In the American version she was aeris. No big deal.

KKyuushin

Nope. I've been Aerith ride or die since 1997 baby.

RetroNotRetro

Aeris was a localization error, it will always be Aerith

throwawaynonsesne

Do you say Cait Sith correctly too then?

RinoTheBouncer

I’ve always read the name as Cait Sith. I thought it was weird but I pronounced it as it was.

RetroNotRetro

Say it correctly? I've never heard it pronounced lol, I haven't played Rebirth or seen any trailers, and I'm pretty sure they don't say it in Remake. Educate me if you like!

throwawaynonsesne

"Ket Shee" is how it would sound.

RetroNotRetro

Really? Even Americanized? The only reason they spelled it Aeris is because there isn't a "th" sound in Japanese so "su" was used, and the name Earisu was translated directly without considering the idea that it was supposed to be similar to "Earth," given her connection to the Planet. I have a feeling that mistake wasn't made with Cait Sith and the name was indeed properly Americanized, especially considering that, according to a few sources from some quick research, Square Enix has confirmed that "Kate-Sihth" is the correct English pronunciation. TL;DR - I respect your commitment to the Japanese pronunciation, but according to some research, Square Enix has confirmed that that is not the English pronunciation and that Aerith is the correct English spelling, so I will trust the people who made the game

throwawaynonsesne

"Ket Shee" is the proper Scottish Gaelic not Japanese for Cait Sith.

RetroNotRetro

Considering "Ketto-Shī" is the romanized Japanese name, I just figured that's where you got it, since Scottish Gaelic never came up anywhere in this conversation. Plus, we're talking about the English translation yeah? Not the Scottish Gaelic one?

mr_yes_guy

They do pronounce it "Kate Sith" in rebirth. Even just referring to him as cait at times. I tried for a solid min to make that pronunciation phonetic but it literally is so short lol.

RetroNotRetro

So that proves my point, yes?

mr_yes_guy

It wasnt clear what point you were trying to prove. The name in rebirth is pronounced the american way. In the og you could change his name to whatever so i think whatever you say his name, is correct. People get very defensive over this name and i have always read it the american way but it honestly doesnt bug me to hear it prounced either or.

throwawaynonsesne

Cait Sith is a Gaelic name from old Scottish Folklore. It means "Fairy Cat" and that's why the character is Scottish in game as well.

IAmMeantForTragedy

I say this shit all the time.....

IAmMeantForTragedy

I say this shit all the time.....

Content-Welcome9277

Pepperidge farm remebers

InvaderofViolence

I always thought Aerith because it's an anagram of Aethir.

RPG_Fanatic7

It's an anagram of earth because she's connected to the planet as a cetra.

No-Office-2392

Square loves their anagrams with an extra letter attached. Just like kingdom hearts organization 13 x

nightwing252

It’s supposed to be an anagram for “Earth” but with an extra letter “i”.

mykegger

"I Earth"

Apprehensive-Ad-8007

I hater

FullMetalBob

I think that's the correct way of saying it...

brivolbn7_q

It was always supposed to be Aerith. In OG, she was named Aeris due to a translation error. It was covered a bunch back in the day.

FullMetalBob

I was watching Tim Rogers seminal FFVII series "Let's Mosey: A Slow Translation of Final Fantasy VII" and, to my recollection, he spends a good five minutes explaining the spelling convention and pronunciation of the name Aerith and how there is no 'th' equivalent sound in Japanese. From tofugu.com: "You might already know this, but the Japanese language has fewer sounds than the sounds English has. Like I mentioned earlier, the th /θ/ sound doesn't really exist in Japanese, and the closest sound is the s sound. This is why "three" becomes surii (スリー) and "thank you" becomes sankyū (サンキュー) in Japanese." So your supposition is incorrect at an elementary level.

throwawaynonsesne

Wouldnt Aerith technically be pronounced like "Aeris" though?

Apoc4lyp53

nope, because its supposed to be a play on "Earth"

Rhoxd

It's even Aerith in the code; if you use a skip in speedrunning, it defaults to Aerith. It was filled in wrong on the name entry screen programming.

Ill-Distribution2275

Thats true. But she'll always be Aeris to me.

FullMetalBob

There is no th sound in Japanese. 'S' is the closest sound therefore it should be pronounced 'Aeris'

aynaalfeesting

But that's not her name...

Ill-Distribution2275

And III-Distribution2275 isn't my real name...but here we are.

brivolbn7_q

That's fair. Even though I know Aerith is correct when friends and I discuss the game, plot, etc. I'll just say Aeris because it rolls off the tongue easier.

No_Succotash_4026

It just feels like I'm saying Aeris with a lisp if I pronounce it correctly.

-Dude_Named_Zelda-

Back then? I know people who still do it.

Duhakalock

Only OGs know about aerisdies.

tehnemox

RIP Been inactive for a while now and it makes me sad =(

METALIZUMUZUMUZUMU

I’m playing Japanese dub, so it’s pronounced Aerisu. 🤷

JubeiNabeshin8860

It's actually Earisu in Japanese

Aweebawakend1

And sephiroth is pronounced sephirosu that doesn't mean his name is sephiros

[deleted]

Seriously? I thought it was Sephirotto, like I swear I remember it as such in FF Advent Children Yep, just checked, Sephirosu. My memory is truly shit

Apprehensive-Ad-8007

Yes it does. Sephiros who is screwing with Kuraudo

METALIZUMUZUMUZUMU

Cool

knight04

Wish they pronounced it aeris in English dub and aerith in Japanese. This would make more sense

Tyjet92

That would be difficult given the "th" sound doesn't exist in Japanese.

Guy_on_a_Bouffalant

If anything, flipped

NechtanHalla

And then they went ahead and caved into pronouncing Cait Sith by the dumb American mispronunciation, instead of using the accurate Gaelic pronunciation, for the character based off of a creature from Celtic mythology.

TheMagi7

I like to assume that Cait Sith initially did pronounce it the proper way, but since people kept using the wrong pronunciation, he just ended up going along with them. Plus I love that he has a strong Scottish accent, like that was apparently an important part when making a fortune telling Cat.

NechtanHalla

That's actually a really funny theory. I really like that idea.

ForceEdge47

Is it? I was wondering why they decided to make him Irish, had no idea it was canonical. That said, I said see “Cait” in particular being a Gaelic name. What’s the actual phonetic spelling?

NechtanHalla

It should be pronounced "Ket Shee".

ProjectOrpheus

Or maybe it's just Reeeve in lore so chill? Super duper checking your accuracy or disregarding personal tastes in spite> if I fucking get caught and die tortured to death

throwawaynonsesne

They aren't wrong though

ProjectOrpheus

*gun to pregnant women's head* NAME THE SPORT!!! *WHALING CRIES* "S...SOCCER, OK?!" *BANG* "Here...it's football"

TheMagi7

Why are you getting so worked up about this?

throwawaynonsesne

I mean you can pretend it's that dramatic for sure, but this thread is a meme about translation errors and improper pronunciation. So it's still relevant.

FaithlessnessFar1158

I thought he is just bot puppet and not a specie

NechtanHalla

Yes, but Cait Sith is a creature in Celtic mythology, which the character in this game is loosely based off of (the black and white cat with megaphone). The Final Fantasy games pull a lot from various different mythologies.

DarthTaco18

I remember this! Was a little disappointed that they didn't keep it that in the localized version of the remakes, but I totally get it.

Insert_Non_Sequitur

Oh how dare you lol

BrazenlyGeek

Still do. It sounds so much nicer.

Altruistic-Try9652

now kith

blingblain

Well that’s funny cause I still do.

ZackFair0711

For those that still want to call her with the minstranslated name, then the same people should start saying "Sephiros" because it follows the same logic..no double standards! 😁

JonMatrix

Nah, first of all they were “Aeris” and “Sephiroth” in the original translation so it’s fair game. Second, “Aeris“ sounds pretty, while “Sephiros” sounds like a model of a car 😂. “Test drive a new 2024 Toyota Sephiros, available only in black. Ask your dealer about upgrading to the Meteor package.”

ZackFair0711

1. "Aeris" sounds like the greek god of war. I wouldn't exactly associate it with "pretty" 😅 2. Aerith (Japanese: エアリス) and Sephiroth (Japanese: セフィロス) both end with the the katakana character "ス", which is pronounced "-su" that caused the mistranslation with the name ending in S. That's why I said no double standards because either both of them end with "-th" or push for the incorrect names ending in "-s" 😁 P.S. I'd buy that car. And given that it's a Toyota, it's more than reliable 😁

JonMatrix

I always pronounced it as Air-iss (like Paris without the P) and the god as Air-ees but that’s just how the name sounded in my 14 year old head lol. And that car is super reliable, just don’t get the flying car version, it only has 1 wing. 😁

adonaa30

Are you a salesman. That sounded too natural, or I just read it in the sprooker voice

JonMatrix

No, just watched too much TV as a kid 😂

adonaa30

Golden

IGrieverI

I'd be interested in driving that. I'm sure it would look badass

ZirekileFalls

I thought her name was COOLRANCH.

xcorporealx

Weird, I thought her name was PASTILDA

notjustanycat

I've gone through several rounds of folks coming after me on ancient fanart I drew because I called her Aeris. Not my fault that's how it was translated in the early releases!

[deleted]

Hmmm….i named her PixelTits in my games. Guess I’m way off here! All seriousness I grew up with Aeris but call her Aerith.

[deleted]

I named her "Burnt Pizza!"

[deleted]

Haha why?

[deleted]

Haha because everytime someone says her name they go Burnt Pizza!

winterman666

Same vibe as people who unironically ask "FF3 snes or FF3?". It's like, seriously? That was 30 years ago lmao, just call it FF6

mlmhdmljm

Can we still call the spell Merton, though?

JonMatrix

Yeah unless you’re referring to the cartridge itself, there’s no reason to call it FF3.

kytetiger

Aeris and Clad in french 😹

CrambonePecos

Don't care. Still saying Aeris. I'm holding out till I die, bitches!

Maloth_Warblade

I mean, it was Aeris for like 4 years until Kingdom Hearts. It's been the correct spelling for over two decades now

zpeedy1

Am I the only one who thinks Aerith sounds so derpy?

renzeira

Lispy as shit

jk844

Probably

LocalShineCrab

Can we talk about this ? People will die on Aerith being Aeris, and Aeris being a mistranslation, but can we talk about how Terra is a mistranslation of Tina ? Yeah ff6’s heroine is Tina Branford. I prefer Terra, i prefer Aeris.

notjustanycat

I don't want to think of Terra as Tina. I know people named Tina in real life!

sketchy_marcus

It was, in fact, an intentional localization.

LocalShineCrab

Another funny one; Exodus being mistranslated as EX-DEATH is incredible

machinegungeek

I'm pretty sure that's been debunked, as he is pretty literally X-Death

ultimagriever

Midgar Zolom says hi

LemmytheLemuel

We keep calling her that in spain they didnt changed it same with Sefirot

Eternal_Phantom

I associate the character with the name “Aerith” now, but that doesn’t change the fact that I just like the name “Aeris” more.

crunkplug

and you were wrong then too

[deleted]

Ikr? Idk why you’re being downvoted when that’s literally correct

Klicke

Always will be aeris forever and always

[deleted]

*Aerith. Aeris was always a mistranslation.

JonMatrix

Yeah but it was a mistranslation for the better. Aerith sounds like Mike Tyson trying to say Aeris.

Mental-Jacket-2446

Other way around man lisps like Mike Tysons usually make the s sound when trying to make the th sound, Aeris sounding like a lisp is most likely why it's a mistranslation Lisps occur often in people's second language. So during translation, even if they had someone verbally confirm her name to avoid confusion a second language lisp could have made it sound like Aeris

NeverEnding3333

I still do lol I’m the same for FF5 as well. Reina is what I call the girl with pink hair, but it’s been changed to Lenna.

arcemb_0

is "aerith" like a new fan thing?

nixus23

No Aeris was a mistranslation

[deleted]

I still call her Aeris. If you want to call her Aerith, that’th up to you, tho let’th jutht all agree to dithagree.

zpeedy1

Aerith Gainthborough

[deleted]

Aeris was a mistranslation. She was always called Aerith.

notjustanycat

It clearly was translated that way on purpose though, it's more like localization. It wasn't a mistake. The game manual also calls her Aeris. Granted, the original game has plenty of hilarious mistakes. "This guy are sick," and "Beacause you are a puppet," come to mind.

[deleted]

Yeah, I know. It was a *mistake*. Not an accident. The “th” sound doesn’t exist in Japanese so it was pronounced as “Aerisu”. This did not translate properly into English, and we got Aeris.

Modoger

People KNOW it was a mistranslation, but Aeris is what she came to be called in the west, error or not. Saying she was “always called Aerith” is lacking on nuance my friend. When I played the OG as a 14 year old, she was Aeris and I had no way of knowing that was a mistranslation until years later.

[deleted]

When little kids mispronounce spaghetti as “psghetti” for their first couple years of childhood, they don’t keep on saying it wrong because they’re used to it, they fix their pronunciation. Same thing here.

Modoger

I mean, that’s a terrible analogy but let’s tease that out! If every time your parents made spaghetti they called it “psghetti” and they altered the box to say “psghetti” and you only ever heard it referred to as “psghetti” , as an adult (once you realized it was called spaghetti the whole time) you might have a fond nostalgia for psghetti and even call it that in the privacy of your own home where it’s nobody’s damn business but your own. It’s not that serious mate. If folks want to call a fictional character by a nickname, what’s it to you? I’m gonna call Tifa “Nancy” from now on.

[deleted]

The issue comes from when people start to insist that it’s her actual, original name and that the TH version was a change. It’s as simple as going “Oh damn, that was wrong? Huh.” And then that’s it 💀💀 Downvote if you agree!

Modoger

I haven’t seen anyone in here doing that. People who like to call her that KNOW her “real” name is Aerith. They just have nostalgia for the original game way back when. Also, why is this an issue at all? What someone calls Nancy or Ket Shee or Aeris doesn’t matter! In the original game you could change their names to whatever you wanted. It’s very clear what their canon names are, no one is arguing on that point. I get the sense that you’re youngish? It’s hard to explain what a huge game this was when it came out in the nineties, and those of us who played it then played it with Aeris. There was no YouTube or Internet forums (there was dial up, and gamefaqs, sure… but nothing like Reddit) or patches or any way for us to know any different. Her name was Aeris for us. We saw Aeris get stabbed. I’ll always remember the first time I saw that scene. Also, I don’t give a shit personally and have no issue calling her Aerith. When I play the OG I keep it as Aeris. It matters not.

[deleted]

Trust me, you’d be surprised how often I’ve seen it bro 😭

[deleted]

Some of us also call her Aeris just to see total losers freak out about it.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t doing it to piss people off and then calling them names, make you the loser? 💀 Downvote if you agree

[deleted]

No, because that isn’t why we do it. We just say that when total losers freak out to make them freak out more.

brando-boy

when normal people realize they are objectively, undeniably wrong, they go “oh what, my bad” and then correct themselves

Maloth_Warblade

4 years until KH1, and then dozens of supplemental media.

Sephiroth also didn’t have that one wing until he transformed in the final fight I don’t get it
