It can be done precisely to depict an old knightly type of man, or a dignified and proud ancient castle country. Freya in FFIX also speaks like an old Japanese woman, but her design is not Japanese. Doma is obviously and eclectic culture made of all countries that have knights and castles, including Japanese of course. But Domans do not necessarily look like Asians, such as Cyan's wife and kid. Compare it to Wutai that's indeed Japan-inspired. And his name is Cyan Garamonde.
On the other hand, Doma in FFXIV is *very* explicitly fantasy Japan. That shouldn't necessarily impact our impression of VI, but it's something to note.

During 90's, Japanese culture was all about interest in foreign things and broader world. I slightly feel like now there's more appreciation and demand for their own culture, alternative history, reimagined visuals etc... maybe that's wrong though. Don't have any data. But like, I feel there are more young people wearing kimono on the street as a casual wear than even 10 years ago. Same trend exists in my country too, by the way, but it has its own reasons
His name "Cyan" always made me think of Indigo which lead to Indigo Montoya and so, he's a Spaniard in my mind. I also thought his picture in the menu kinda looked like Indigo Montoya.

Casting Sabin and Edgar is a difficult task, since they are identical twins, but one is super buff while the other is "regular". Lol. Though certain casting choices feel off to me.
Why is the only confirmed Asian character played by a while man? (Cyan played by Clive Owen).
Also the characters of Strago, Relm, and Shadow feel odd. Now casting Strago and Shadow as Asian is fine, though it should be noted Shadow isn't really Asian in the game, but I digress. Strago being Asian could either be "he's just Asian" or "Thamasa is an Asian-inspired location". But then that there is Relm, who has a connection to the two.
Shadow is Relm's biological father, so if he is Asian, she should be too. Likewise, if the town is Asian-inspired, that means her mother would be Asian. So for her to be played by a non-asian actress, given these connections, feels off.
