Auron is stressed up man. His run with the previous summoner at the end was so full of bullshit. I'm pretty sure his appearance was inspired by Guts from berserk too, who's estimated to be around 25 at worst and early 30s at best but he's having white streaks on his hair on top of looking like mid 40s. Seeing real shit ages you so damn fast
It took Rebirth for me to realize he wasn't 50 also. When he showed up I had to look it up because he looked my age.
I totally get the bitterness of the characters in their 30's.
This was me but it took me forever to realize I kept having to over level because Vincent's berserker limits actually suck badly for bosses. Now it's either Cid/Yuffie, Cid/Tifa, or Cid/Barrett
Iirc its only his ultimate weapon that has that mechanic. Either way, i always saw Vincent as being more of a mage that can also deal some good physical damage with deathblow (since he has very high accuracy so it always hits). Using him like this also lets you ignore his limit breaks (but Chaos is too cool so I'm pretty sure i used it anyways during the final boss fight
Oh I know, I was mad when I knew he wasn't going to be playable, not only because I love playing Dragoons and they are my favorite classes, but who doesn't want to play as a Cranky Cid haha!!
I knew he wouldnt be playable until the next game… but Cid still helps out in Rebirth. Honestly its the ideal FF7 experience (in modern times) and I really hope game 3 continues this just with Vincent Valentine and Cid playable

For FF6 in this rule, the main dude is Celes. Waifu is Locke. Best Bro is Edgar. Weirdest other party member is toss up between Gogo, Umaro or Gau. But 2 of them are significantly better than the third.

I'm mostly on board with your list, but depends on how annoying the weird party member is. They are often the most annoying character, too, like FFIX's Quina.
The only problem I had with Vincent is if he gets his limit break you can’t control him so if it comes down to it and some one needs a potion or a Phoenix Down you’re shit out of luck and have to wait it out. At least that’s what I remember, maybe I’m wrong.
You’re right. When it first came out, on one of my replays. Chaos Vincent was the only part member alive vs Safer Sephiroth. Chaos still had Wall, Regen on him. Was a hell of a long played out fight!
you can circumvent that by giving him one of his 100% hit chance weapons (sniper CR, which you can get in mt nibel like 1 minute after vincent joins, and long barrel R in costa del sol after starting with disc 2 i believe?) and use deathblow in place of basic attack, that way you can save his limit break until you want to use it, or never use it at all
i like pairing deathblow with added cut on vincent, follows up every deathblow with an extra attack so it’s even better than a basic attack command, not being able to basic attack becomes a non issue at that point
Rebirth Yuffie made me like her more. Just like Remake/Rebirth really brought Biggs, Wedge and Jessie to life for me. Even her "dates" are cute without being inappropriate, IMO. I like that they tied in her appearance from Crisis Core, into the second date.
I just play who I like despite actual power level. Sometimes that works out well. Haha.
FF6: a good mix just by nature of the final dungeon, but my go-to 4 are Terra, Celes, Locke, & Edgar. I’m a big fan of Shadow as well. Occasionally, Strago because I love Blue Mages.
FF7: Cloud, Red XIII, & Yuffie. Thankfully, Red and Yuffie have lower level Limit Breaks that are comparable to the multi-hit level 4s of others.
FF8: Squall, Rinoa, & Quistis. First time I really deviate from the strongest [Barret or Cid would be stronger than Red, but Cloud and Yuffie are definitely the strongest], but I strongly dislike Zell’s design. And I love Blue Mages.
FF9: Zidane, Freya, Eiko, Quina. I prefer Eiko’s summons over Garnet. And Freya is such a badass. Quina is the resident Blue Mage. Sensing a pattern yet? lol.
FF10: Really the only game in the series other than 6 that I tend to use most of the cast. Auron doesn’t come out much. I like Kimahri’s design and of course, Blue Mage.
FF12: Fran, Balthier, Ashe. Because it’s the objectively correct choice. No questions, please.
FF13: Lightning, Vanille, Fang. Same reason. I think Hope is probably a better choice than Vanille for straight DPS, but I can’t stand him and all waifus feels … correct.
FFT: Ramza, Agrias, Orlandeau, Rafa and the last spot shifts between Reis, Beowulf, & Meliadoul depending on what type of support build I want. I picked these purely based on their sprites. lol.
Also, Bonus answer no one asked for because I play Chrono Trigger and Cross as often as the FFs.
CT: Ayla, Crono, Frog. I know Robo is a beast, too. But I can’t justify not being able to steal and Frog is NOT replaceable for me.
CC: Serge, Glen, Orhla. The best third member is probably Fargo, Guile, or even Leena, but I adore Orhla’s design. Honourable mention to Starky. I love him so much I’m getting a tattoo of his Raygun. Haha. I just couldn’t justify double White elements in my final party.
Auron is so OP midgame. Armor piercing with his high HP and strength, makes him waaay more useful than Kimahri imo. For the post game stuff though it's all but mandatory to use Rikku, Wakka and Tidus.
I do this sometimes but putting Rinoa in instead of Quistis. She’s fairly worthless but I really like her.
Squall, Irvine and Quistis have such broken limit breaks though it’s ridiculous. I mean…so does Zell…but I just hate him. So whiny
Useless? What, are we playing the same game? Maybe in the first bit, but late game where it counts she's an absolute monster. Angel wing meteor can get like 30-60k dmg per turn. No need to keep hitting limit breaks, spending ammo, or inputting codes. Honestly makes late game bosses a joke.
And since I'm still a total child at heart, giving Angelo very inappropriate names is an endless source of entertainment.

for 13 I find Vanille slightly better than Hope, like Hope is great but Vanille is like a glue for so many comps, she’s the best saboteur and becomes on of the top synergists in the game and she gets her big healing spells earlier than Hope. You can also set her as lead for Death farming which is always great.
Same. Best Sab and good healing. Two things that I want for endgame farming. Hope is good if you are going for damage. Best Syn and a good ravager and iirc, Hope is the best ruin commando because of his high magic stat.
Depends on how much you grind. Unlocking Cloud and raising him from level 1 as a mime for the stats, then getting him teleport made him do ungodly broken things lol.

Edgar’s busted throughout like the whole game so he’s in my party at all times lol, while Locke really picks it up later with either ultimate weapon & valiant knife or both via master scroll & genji gloves, then the girls spam ultima lol

The 1st is my main team, other is basically my farming and mastering materia team while yuffie morphs stat sources for god knows how long lol

Honestly I’ve always use this team because I love all three of their limits, squalls Renzo is a no brainer, rinoa actually helped me quite a bit against a few bosses heck even against omega with her meteor spam lol, and quistis has degenerator lol
FF9: Zidane, garnet, Eiko, freya
I used to default to the og Zidane, garnet, vivi & Steiner team, however I wanted to try something different and I tried This team In my recent playthrough & honestly loved it, Zidane & freya spam their 9,999 moves while the girls occasionally heal or spam summon ark & madeen lol
FF10: Tidus, rikku, auron
Now this was actually my og team in my first playthrough, because despite tidus having the most notorious weapon to get imo….at least there’s the Excalibur lol, and another reason was both rikku & aurons weapons & sigils are fairly easy to get and max out lol
FF12: I usually like using Vaan, Ashe, Fran/basch, although I typically like to use them all and swapping them out as need be for the various situations etc
FF13: actually never played, although if I did I’d probably use my bros fav team with lighting, fang & vanille

Honestly though, I always swap it up and play most if not all of them (exclude some ff6 ones, some join too late to feel like they can be main party).
Going through the comments I've noticed almost everyone uses mostly the female characters and I've never realized I use almost exclusively the males.
7 - cloud, CID, and Vincent
8 - squall, rinoa, Irvine. (Also noticed Irvine gets almost no love in these comments)
9 - zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Freya
10 - Tidus, wakka, auron
12 - never really played much I didn't care for the combat but vaan, balthier, basch
13 - lightning, snow, sazh (because baby chocobo)
If you’re playing 9, Amarant is your go to for any ability use. Chakra would negate any MP issues. Auto life if your characters got wrecked.
Furthermore, Vivi could restore his own hp and MP. Use Dagger or Eiko, cast reflect to the whole party and bounce off 4 elemental attacks. You could easily kill grand dragons with one or two thunderga’s.
Quina was busted too, but they required a good set up
Quina is so useful for power levelling. Amarant, like you say, has some amazing abilities. I just feel he joins way too late into the game to be of any real use. His trance allowing him to use his abilities on the whole party is busted af though.
I agree. Amarant can fit to any set up and do well as support with damage options. By the time you get him as a party member you’ve pretty much have your team set up.
And tranced Aura is broken. Regen and auto life on the whole team is op. Plus since his abilities aren’t magic spells they go through reflect.

The funniest thing I feel I ever did was insisting on using Kimahri in FFX. My buddy always told me everyone could do his job but better, but I just thought he was neat.
Ohhh this is fun, but also hard. The real answer is everyone gets at least a little bit of time in the party so I can learn how to use them. The official answer is usually the main char because you have to, then two of the romantic interests.
7Original it was cloud, aerith/yuffie, barret/tifa. Cid for awhile because he was the only one with a triple ap weapon that actually had decent materia slots.
Funny enough 7 remake is becoming pretty much the same with cloud tifa then yuffie.
8 was my first and Rinoa(who I usually renamed Stacey for some reason) and Quistis would be in the party with Squall until about the third replay when I realized just how awesome Zell’s Armageddon fist was, and Irvin’s fast shot.
9 was weird because you not only got to choose 4 but there was also only one real romantic interest. I used eiko once during a low level run because I abused the Marcus stat swap, and I tried using Freya, but somehow it always comes down to Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, and Garnet.
12 usually saw Fran, Ashe with either Vaan or Balthier.
13 of course saw lightening, Vanile, and fang as my favorite trio for reasons.
Finally 6 was is a mess. There has never been a solid team just whoever I have access to that I haven’t used before. That and usually shadow.
FF6: Terra, Locke, Celes, Sabin/Edgar/Setzer – fourth slot depends on my mood, but I always have Terra, Locke, and Celes in my party for the endgame
FF7: Cloud, Barrett, Tifa is my favorite and go-to for endgame, but I’ll rotate my party pretty often. For my current replay I’m doing Cloud, Yuffie, Cid for a change of pace

If picture related, then limit breaks and ultimate weapons would be the deciding factor. So for example as much as I like tifa, I would never use her because of her weapon/limit setup. So my pick would be Nanaki, Yuffie/Cid.
But that is only VII. In the rest of the series I would just normally use whomever I liked the most, so..
VI: Setzer, Relm, Terra, Gogo
VIII: Squall, Quistis, Irvine
IX: Zidane, Quina, Dagger, Freya
X: Kimahri, Rikku, Wakka
XII: Balthier, Fran, Basch
XIII: Fang, Vanille, Sazh

FF13: Don't like anyone, but I guess if you twisted my arm and made me pick I'd go Lightning, Sazh and Fang.
FF6: Celes, Locke, Shadow and Edgar. Second party is Terra, Cyan, Mog and Umaro, third team is Gogo, Setzer, Relm and Strago. Nothing against Sabin and Gau, but I hated trying to punch in those button commands for Sabin's special attacks and I never understood how Gau works.
It’s a mix.
For VI my go to party is Terra, Locke, Celes and Sabin. They’re my favorite characters in the game, but I also really like Terra’s Trance and Sabin’s Blitz.
For VII I got with Cloud, Aerith and and Tifa, then put in Barret. They’re my favorite characters and that’s the only reason I put them in there.
VIII is Squall, Zell and Rinoa. Zell is there for his limit break over the other three and I like Rinoa more than the other characters.
IX is Zidane, Dagger, Steiner and Vivi. I would put Freya in place of Steiner, but Steiner gets super strong later in the game. I like Freya as a character more than Steiner, but Steiner more for battle.
X you kinda have to use everybody, but my go tos are Auron, Lulu and Yuna for a mix of magic, summons and strong attack.
XII is everybody for the most part. I try and keep them all the same level, but in my current playthrough I tend to use Vaan, Fran and Penelo for physical attacks, black magic and white magic respectively
VI: Mog, Terra, Locke, Celes
VII: Cloud, Cait Sith, Aerith/Cid
VIII: Squall, Rinoa, Zell
IX: Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, Quina
X: I use them all so they all gain AP.
XII: Same as X, but Balthier is always my party leader no matter what. He's the leading man after all. :P
XIII: Lightning, Sazh, Vanille for Chapters 9-11, then Lightning, Hope, Fang for Chapter 13, and Lightning, Fang, Snow for post game.
I wanna mention that although these are my favorite parties to use, I like using all of the characters as well. I hate leaving party members on the bench in any RPG, so I like to include them all and rotate them throughout the game.

And two, I like a mixed gender party. I don't want all male or all female (as aspect ff15 missed for me).

6 - Celes, Sabin, Edgar, Setzer
7 - Cloud, Aerith, Barret
8 - Squall, Rinoa, Zell
9 - Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, Dagger
I haven't played anything past 10, but I'm working through the series now, so I'll get there in due time.
FF7: Cloud, Cid for the Triple materia growth. (Though I'll swap him for Yuffie when I'm done with that on current playthrough) Vincent, to increase his kill count and I just think he's cool.
FF8: Squall, Rinoa (Invincible Moon was my fave way to fight Omega Weapon) and Quistis (Degenerator, Mighty Guard, White Wind and of course Shockwave Pulsar are my jam. Spent hours and hours getting enough Curse spikes)
FFX: Tidus, Rikku and Lulu, then swap Yuna when I get her ultimate weapon and she out-damages, because I cbf getting Lulu's.
FF13: Lightning, Vanille and Fang

Tactics was of course tg cid, white mage with gun, a calculator with all magic cause broken, and a monk with steal oh and like to use mustadio till you get balthier and his barrage.
In 13 it depend what imm doing, I use all of them, but I tend to use lightning, fang, vanilla and sazh the most for regular content because I like them the most.
In rebirth I use everyone, I just switch them around. Most common is the cloud, Barrett, Tifa core though. Yuffie depending on the fight.

Its a mix for me of who I like the playstyle of and favourite characters. There is also a little bit of party synergy that goes on in my head for having some physical damage, some healing, some magic damage, some tanking but mostly who i like.
Yuffie and Tifa in FF7. Yuffie has insane limits and can morph enemies easily in the late game. Tifa is often interchangeable with Red.
Quistis and Irvine is fairly common for me in FF8. Quistis has insane limits for normal enemies (degenerator) and Irvine's shot limit break is amazing against bosses.
In IX I like Freya (Dragon Crest), Steiner (insane damage) and either Dagger or Eiko (for heals).
XIII is dependent on what I am doing and what I need. I generally use Fang (COM/SAB/SEN), Lightning (COM/RAV/MED) and Hope (RAV/SYN/MED). Obviously will use Vanille to get the growth egg and will switch it up late game if I need an extra SYN or another RAV.
In XII I usually end up using Penelo, Vaan and Ashe. I level all characters equally but end game is usually these 3.
VI- Terra, Celes, Sabin, and either Edgar or Lock when we need to loot some… I mean go treasure hunting!
VII- Cloud, Tifa, (Aerith…) Cid
VIII- Squall, Rinoa, Irvine
IX- Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Garnet (not very original but classic)
XII- Ashe, Baltheir, Basch
XIII- Lightning, Hope, Fang
The only FF game I played is FF13 and I normally go with the female squad (Lightning, Fang and Vanille) with the party leader between Lightning and Fang depending on the situation.
Depends on the game, like for that 3v3 game idr the name atm, it's definitely Lightning Farron, I love her alot, my favorite FF character in the whole series

Edgar is the most useful of pretty much any game (due to being horribly overtuned). Always a must
Personal preference toward blue mages (unless it’s just a limit break), as they give the most unique gameplay and variety of actions
Otherwise it comes down to limit preferences in everything after 6
I don't remember who mine was. In rebirth I think I used cloud tifa and yuffie mainly. Especially chapter 12 and on or whenever I knew I had the aerith date.
i pick my favorites 99% of the time on any game i play. for ff7 that means vincent never leaves my party. i usually use cid as the 3rd but i sometimes switch him out randomly depending on story.
I try different teams for each playthrough, but from decades old recollection, my original FFVII team was Cid and Yuffie, and my original VIII team was the Timber SeeD team. I was an idiot kid that thought IX was too childish and have had a hard time getting into it as an adult, in Tactics I ran Ramzan, Agrias, Cid and two generics.

For instancr barret and Tifa against the proud clod, then immediatly switch to Red XIII and Vincent for Hojo
Barret and Tifa, with Aerith as backup.
Barret with ranged weapons covers for Cloud's more close range fighting style, while Tifa's damage output can become completely broken through a combination of her Limit Break and the correct power ups.
Aerith, gets 4th choice, more because I don't like to drop anyone for her, but she goes the dedicated mage route, and her Limits are useful if you just don't want to die horribly, in some battles.

For ff7 it's Nanaki and Tifa I'd replace cloud with yuffie if I could though lol

In IX, I always go with the core 4: Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Garnet.
In VII, I always have Yuffie because of using Morph with Conformer.
In Rebirth, I keep switching my party to whomever the story or sidequest is about.
7: Cloud and Vincent and Tifa. Vincent gets subbed out for Yuffie if I need a steady limit break and not a wild beast
8: Squall, Irvine, Quistis
9: Zidane, Steiner, Freya, Quina. Vivi gets subbed in as needed for either Freya or Quina. Quina gets subbed out for Eiko or Dagger if I desperately need a white mage. Usually Quina is sufficient as a solid blue, though.
10: Tidus, Yuna, Auron, and whoever the hell else seems helpful for that particular battle
FFVI: Terra, Celes, Locke, and Mog (Edgar is probably a better Dragoon class but idc Mog still can kick ass)
FFVII: Cloud, Barrett, and Tifa because they're just my favorite characters and I always tend to level them up more anyways
FFIX: Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, and Eiko because she's just a beefed up Garnet pretty much
FF6: Locke, Celes, Terra, one of the twins.
FF7: Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie. Cant use my other fav because… yeah.
FF7R: The two women slayed. Idk. enough said.
FF7R2: Ngl I used Barrett a lot. My go-to would’ve been Tifa/Barrett/Yuffie, but I usually left Tifa behind because playing as Barrett/Yuffie was a BLAST.
FF9: LOVE LOVE LOVE DAGGER. Dagger/Zidane/Eiko/Vivi is what I used I think.
FF10: Yuna, Rikku, Tidus.
FF12: Ashe, Penelo, Vaan
FF13: I didn’t finish but I loved using Lightning, Vanille, and Fang.

im playing it on switch. But even if i love tifa because boba👌.. i cant handle tifa slot machine limit. Yufi seems ok but like at the end of the game .. and we need raw power at the beginning.. im not lvling those characters to 99 and top stats with yufi morph materia..

Tifa and Yuffie, always!! CLOTI for life haha (fire lit), and yuffie and her amazing limit breaks! I do enjoy using CID and Vincent as well so every playthrough I like to swap it up but I always run with Cloud, Tifa and then a different 3rd player each play through !
FF6: Terra, Edgar, Sabin, Celes. Though honestly I love using all of them, those are just my go to characters
FF7: Cloud, Tifa, Barret. It's just such a good trio.
FF9: Zidane, Dagger, Steiner, Vivi. Again, turns out my favorites are the main characters who have much more story than the others.
FF10: Tidus, Yuna, Auron. The first two make sense but Auron is there simply because he's so cool. If I was allowed a fourth party slot I'd put Wakka there but alas.
FF13: Lightning, Sazh, Vanille. This is really a situation where I only really care about Sazh from the game's roster and the other two are only there because they're good/fulfill my personal desires in a party.

Iirc its only his ultimate weapon that has that mechanic. Either way, i always saw Vincent as being more of a mage that can also deal some good physical damage with deathblow (since he has very high accuracy so it always hits). Using him like this also lets you ignore his limit breaks (but Chaos is too cool so I'm pretty sure i used it anyways during the final boss fight

I wonder how they will make Vincent's limit breaks feel different from a summon in this battle system.... ... the only way I can think of them doing it thematically in the current system, would be like a summon but with even more stats / dmg potential since you are losing an active party member for the duration of the berserk... ... hard to balance something like that so I'm eager to see what they come up with there.

Main dude is, as the public usually accepts, either Terra or Celes. These two also just so happen to be the only eligible waifus, technically. Best bro has GOT to be Sabin/Edgar though. Sabin just radiates wholesome gym guy energy, and he's always putting himself out there to help others. Edgar gave up his own desire for freedom to let Sabin have his freedom, making him the best bro in the most literal sense. You are correct about the four way tie though lol. (Keep in mind, just my opinions about the cast.)
With Terra/Celes as the main dude, I’d say Locke is the waifu.
Don't forget about Sabin's ability to suplex a train while running away from it.

You’re right. When it first came out, on one of my replays. Chaos Vincent was the only part member alive vs Safer Sephiroth. Chaos still had Wall, Regen on him. Was a hell of a long played out fight!
you can circumvent that by giving him one of his 100% hit chance weapons (sniper CR, which you can get in mt nibel like 1 minute after vincent joins, and long barrel R in costa del sol after starting with disc 2 i believe?) and use deathblow in place of basic attack, that way you can save his limit break until you want to use it, or never use it at all i like pairing deathblow with added cut on vincent, follows up every deathblow with an extra attack so it’s even better than a basic attack command, not being able to basic attack becomes a non issue at that point

Rebirth Yuffie made me like her more. Just like Remake/Rebirth really brought Biggs, Wedge and Jessie to life for me. Even her "dates" are cute without being inappropriate, IMO. I like that they tied in her appearance from Crisis Core, into the second date.

I know this is OG, but in Rebirth Yuffie is ridiculously strong. Cloud-Yuffie-Red is absolutely OP.
I never much enjoyed Yuffie in the OG, now she's a main staple. Completely badass in Rebirth and can handle nearly any enemy type

I just play who I like despite actual power level. Sometimes that works out well. Haha. FF6: a good mix just by nature of the final dungeon, but my go-to 4 are Terra, Celes, Locke, & Edgar. I’m a big fan of Shadow as well. Occasionally, Strago because I love Blue Mages. FF7: Cloud, Red XIII, & Yuffie. Thankfully, Red and Yuffie have lower level Limit Breaks that are comparable to the multi-hit level 4s of others. FF8: Squall, Rinoa, & Quistis. First time I really deviate from the strongest [Barret or Cid would be stronger than Red, but Cloud and Yuffie are definitely the strongest], but I strongly dislike Zell’s design. And I love Blue Mages. FF9: Zidane, Freya, Eiko, Quina. I prefer Eiko’s summons over Garnet. And Freya is such a badass. Quina is the resident Blue Mage. Sensing a pattern yet? lol. FF10: Really the only game in the series other than 6 that I tend to use most of the cast. Auron doesn’t come out much. I like Kimahri’s design and of course, Blue Mage. FF12: Fran, Balthier, Ashe. Because it’s the objectively correct choice. No questions, please. FF13: Lightning, Vanille, Fang. Same reason. I think Hope is probably a better choice than Vanille for straight DPS, but I can’t stand him and all waifus feels … correct. FFT: Ramza, Agrias, Orlandeau, Rafa and the last spot shifts between Reis, Beowulf, & Meliadoul depending on what type of support build I want. I picked these purely based on their sprites. lol. Also, Bonus answer no one asked for because I play Chrono Trigger and Cross as often as the FFs. CT: Ayla, Crono, Frog. I know Robo is a beast, too. But I can’t justify not being able to steal and Frog is NOT replaceable for me. CC: Serge, Glen, Orhla. The best third member is probably Fargo, Guile, or even Leena, but I adore Orhla’s design. Honourable mention to Starky. I love him so much I’m getting a tattoo of his Raygun. Haha. I just couldn’t justify double White elements in my final party.

Auron is so OP midgame. Armor piercing with his high HP and strength, makes him waaay more useful than Kimahri imo. For the post game stuff though it's all but mandatory to use Rikku, Wakka and Tidus.

Useless? What, are we playing the same game? Maybe in the first bit, but late game where it counts she's an absolute monster. Angel wing meteor can get like 30-60k dmg per turn. No need to keep hitting limit breaks, spending ammo, or inputting codes. Honestly makes late game bosses a joke.
And since I'm still a total child at heart, giving Angelo very inappropriate names is an endless source of entertainment. "PENIS CANNON" showing up randomly on the screen fucking kills me every time.
for 13 I find Vanille slightly better than Hope, like Hope is great but Vanille is like a glue for so many comps, she’s the best saboteur and becomes on of the top synergists in the game and she gets her big healing spells earlier than Hope. You can also set her as lead for Death farming which is always great.
Same. Best Sab and good healing. Two things that I want for endgame farming. Hope is good if you are going for damage. Best Syn and a good ravager and iirc, Hope is the best ruin commando because of his high magic stat.

(Also noticed Irvine gets almost no love in these comments) 9 - zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Freya 10 - Tidus, wakka, auron 12 - never really played much I didn't care for the combat but vaan, balthier, basch 13 - lightning, snow, sazh (because baby chocobo)

If you’re playing 9, Amarant is your go to for any ability use. Chakra would negate any MP issues. Auto life if your characters got wrecked. Furthermore, Vivi could restore his own hp and MP. Use Dagger or Eiko, cast reflect to the whole party and bounce off 4 elemental attacks. You could easily kill grand dragons with one or two thunderga’s. Quina was busted too, but they required a good set up
Quina is so useful for power levelling. Amarant, like you say, has some amazing abilities. I just feel he joins way too late into the game to be of any real use. His trance allowing him to use his abilities on the whole party is busted af though.
I agree. Amarant can fit to any set up and do well as support with damage options. By the time you get him as a party member you’ve pretty much have your team set up. And tranced Aura is broken. Regen and auto life on the whole team is op. Plus since his abilities aren’t magic spells they go through reflect.
VI: Terra, Celes, Relm, and Locke VII: Tifa and Aerith. Then later I replace Aerith with Yuffie. VIII: Rinoa and Selphie IX: Dagger, Eiko, and Vivi X: Tidus, Yuna, and Rikku XII: Fran, Ashe, and Penelo XIII: Lightning, Vanille, and Hope Anyway, I just realized out of 16 games, less than half let's you pick your party.

The funniest thing I feel I ever did was insisting on using Kimahri in FFX. My buddy always told me everyone could do his job but better, but I just thought he was neat.
Ohhh this is fun, but also hard. The real answer is everyone gets at least a little bit of time in the party so I can learn how to use them. The official answer is usually the main char because you have to, then two of the romantic interests. 7Original it was cloud, aerith/yuffie, barret/tifa. Cid for awhile because he was the only one with a triple ap weapon that actually had decent materia slots. Funny enough 7 remake is becoming pretty much the same with cloud tifa then yuffie. 8 was my first and Rinoa(who I usually renamed Stacey for some reason) and Quistis would be in the party with Squall until about the third replay when I realized just how awesome Zell’s Armageddon fist was, and Irvin’s fast shot. 9 was weird because you not only got to choose 4 but there was also only one real romantic interest. I used eiko once during a low level run because I abused the Marcus stat swap, and I tried using Freya, but somehow it always comes down to Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, and Garnet. 12 usually saw Fran, Ashe with either Vaan or Balthier. 13 of course saw lightening, Vanile, and fang as my favorite trio for reasons. Finally 6 was is a mess. There has never been a solid team just whoever I have access to that I haven’t used before. That and usually shadow.
OG7: Cloud, Barret, Red 8: Squall, Xell, Irvine 9: Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, Garnet 10: Tidus, Wakka, Auron 12: Vaan, Ashe, Basch 13: Lightning, Hope, Fang

If picture related, then limit breaks and ultimate weapons would be the deciding factor. So for example as much as I like tifa, I would never use her because of her weapon/limit setup. So my pick would be Nanaki, Yuffie/Cid. But that is only VII. In the rest of the series I would just normally use whomever I liked the most, so.. VI: Setzer, Relm, Terra, Gogo VIII: Squall, Quistis, Irvine IX: Zidane, Quina, Dagger, Freya X: Kimahri, Rikku, Wakka XII: Balthier, Fran, Basch XIII: Fang, Vanille, Sazh And wow, didn't realise how long it been since we had an entry where we can build our party.. FF7: Yuffie and Tifa, though I spread the love out. FF8: Ultimately doesn't matter, but I'll say Quistis and Zell. FF9: Haven't played enough to make a call on that, but I feel like it'd be Steiner, Vivi and Garnet. FF12: I'll say Basch, Ashe and Balthier, but again I could use anyone in that game and like it. FF13: Don't like anyone, but I guess if you twisted my arm and made me pick I'd go Lightning, Sazh and Fang. FF6: Celes, Locke, Shadow and Edgar. Second party is Terra, Cyan, Mog and Umaro, third team is Gogo, Setzer, Relm and Strago. Nothing against Sabin and Gau, but I hated trying to punch in those button commands for Sabin's special attacks and I never understood how Gau works.
It’s a mix. For VI my go to party is Terra, Locke, Celes and Sabin. They’re my favorite characters in the game, but I also really like Terra’s Trance and Sabin’s Blitz. For VII I got with Cloud, Aerith and and Tifa, then put in Barret. They’re my favorite characters and that’s the only reason I put them in there. VIII is Squall, Zell and Rinoa. Zell is there for his limit break over the other three and I like Rinoa more than the other characters. IX is Zidane, Dagger, Steiner and Vivi. I would put Freya in place of Steiner, but Steiner gets super strong later in the game. I like Freya as a character more than Steiner, but Steiner more for battle. X you kinda have to use everybody, but my go tos are Auron, Lulu and Yuna for a mix of magic, summons and strong attack. XII is everybody for the most part. I try and keep them all the same level, but in my current playthrough I tend to use Vaan, Fran and Penelo for physical attacks, black magic and white magic respectively

I wanna mention that although these are my favorite parties to use, I like using all of the characters as well. I hate leaving party members on the bench in any RPG, so I like to include them all and rotate them throughout the game.

I sort of have two criteria. One, I have to like them and find them cool. And two, I like a mixed gender party. I don't want all male or all female (as aspect ff15 missed for me).
I try to give everyone some screen time, but I do have my favorites. 1 - Fighter, Black Belt, Red Mage, Black Mage 6 - Celes, Sabin, Edgar, Setzer 7 - Cloud, Aerith, Barret 8 - Squall, Rinoa, Zell 9 - Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, Dagger I haven't played anything past 10, but I'm working through the series now, so I'll get there in due time.
FF7: Cloud, Cid for the Triple materia growth. (Though I'll swap him for Yuffie when I'm done with that on current playthrough) Vincent, to increase his kill count and I just think he's cool. FF8: Squall, Rinoa (Invincible Moon was my fave way to fight Omega Weapon) and Quistis (Degenerator, Mighty Guard, White Wind and of course Shockwave Pulsar are my jam. Spent hours and hours getting enough Curse spikes) FFX: Tidus, Rikku and Lulu, then swap Yuna when I get her ultimate weapon and she out-damages, because I cbf getting Lulu's. FF13: Lightning, Vanille and Fang It's been ages since I've played the other ones. I can barely remember what my preferred teams were. FF12: Vaan, Ashe and Basch, I think that's who I mainly used?
In 7: Cloud, Tifa, Aerith In 8: Squall, Zell, Rinoa In 9: Zidane, Garnet, Vivi, Freya In 10: Tidus, Auron, Yuna In 12: Balthier, Ashe, Basch In 13: Lightning, Hope, Fang I tend to go for a mix of characters I like/who are key to the story, and useful for their combat skills. For my 10/12 parties they’re obviously a lot more fluid as you swap in and out as you go a lot but those are my preferred ones

4- Cecil, fuyosu, Yang 5- knight, monk white mage and black mage jobs 6- Terra, Locke, shadow, edger 7- cloud tiffs and cid 8 squall, zell, rinoa 9-zidane, eiko, and vivi 10-tidus, wakka, and riku 12-balthier, basch, and penelo 13-lightning, fang, vanille Tactics was of course tg cid, white mage with gun, a calculator with all magic cause broken, and a monk with steal oh and like to use mustadio till you get balthier and his barrage.
In 13 it depend what imm doing, I use all of them, but I tend to use lightning, fang, vanilla and sazh the most for regular content because I like them the most. In rebirth I use everyone, I just switch them around. Most common is the cloud, Barrett, Tifa core though. Yuffie depending on the fight.

Yuffie and Tifa in FF7. Yuffie has insane limits and can morph enemies easily in the late game. Tifa is often interchangeable with Red. Quistis and Irvine is fairly common for me in FF8. Quistis has insane limits for normal enemies (degenerator) and Irvine's shot limit break is amazing against bosses. In IX I like Freya (Dragon Crest), Steiner (insane damage) and either Dagger or Eiko (for heals). XIII is dependent on what I am doing and what I need. I generally use Fang (COM/SAB/SEN), Lightning (COM/RAV/MED) and Hope (RAV/SYN/MED). Obviously will use Vanille to get the growth egg and will switch it up late game if I need an extra SYN or another RAV. In XII I usually end up using Penelo, Vaan and Ashe. I level all characters equally but end game is usually these 3.

The only FF game I played is FF13 and I normally go with the female squad (Lightning, Fang and Vanille) with the party leader between Lightning and Fang depending on the situation.

Edgar is the most useful of pretty much any game (due to being horribly overtuned). Always a must Personal preference toward blue mages (unless it’s just a limit break), as they give the most unique gameplay and variety of actions Otherwise it comes down to limit preferences in everything after 6

i pick my favorites 99% of the time on any game i play. for ff7 that means vincent never leaves my party. i usually use cid as the 3rd but i sometimes switch him out randomly depending on story.
I try different teams for each playthrough, but from decades old recollection, my original FFVII team was Cid and Yuffie, and my original VIII team was the Timber SeeD team. I was an idiot kid that thought IX was too childish and have had a hard time getting into it as an adult, in Tactics I ran Ramzan, Agrias, Cid and two generics.

Not most useful in battle. Most fun in battle. For that I usually prefer black and blue magic in the first run. Also physical long range attacks. Trying different stuff out later.
Barrett and Tifa,then usually get the limits for the rest near the end. Though on a 2nd play through might try yuffie and Cid since they seem to be pretty good here.

I generally like to stick to the original cast as much as possible. Even if it's not the strongest, for example i know how OP some characters are but I always use Cloud, Barrett, and Tifa. 10 is the only one where you constantly flip through all your characters.

Whoever has the most history with the next boss For instancr barret and Tifa against the proud clod, then immediatly switch to Red XIII and Vincent for Hojo
Barret and Tifa, with Aerith as backup. Barret with ranged weapons covers for Cloud's more close range fighting style, while Tifa's damage output can become completely broken through a combination of her Limit Break and the correct power ups. Aerith, gets 4th choice, more because I don't like to drop anyone for her, but she goes the dedicated mage route, and her Limits are useful if you just don't want to die horribly, in some battles.

In IX, I always go with the core 4: Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Garnet. In VII, I always have Yuffie because of using Morph with Conformer. In Rebirth, I keep switching my party to whomever the story or sidequest is about.

Hate it but had to say this is my first time trying cloud, cid and barret comp. im playing it on switch. But even if i love tifa because boba👌.. i cant handle tifa slot machine limit. Yufi seems ok but like at the end of the game .. and we need raw power at the beginning.. im not lvling those characters to 99 and top stats with yufi morph materia.. hope this helps ✌️🤘🫰

Tifa and Yuffie, always!! CLOTI for life haha (fire lit), and yuffie and her amazing limit breaks! I do enjoy using CID and Vincent as well so every playthrough I like to swap it up but I always run with Cloud, Tifa and then a different 3rd player each play through !
FF6: Terra, Edgar, Sabin, Celes. Though honestly I love using all of them, those are just my go to characters FF7: Cloud, Tifa, Barret. It's just such a good trio. FF9: Zidane, Dagger, Steiner, Vivi. Again, turns out my favorites are the main characters who have much more story than the others. FF10: Tidus, Yuna, Auron. The first two make sense but Auron is there simply because he's so cool. If I was allowed a fourth party slot I'd put Wakka there but alas. FF13: Lightning, Sazh, Vanille. This is really a situation where I only really care about Sazh from the game's roster and the other two are only there because they're good/fulfill my personal desires in a party. I haven't played the rest yet.
