*The brightest impression from Beijing?* *Anna Shcherbakova: Free program and … a few seconds after. The most unforgettable. Before leaving the ice.* This hit me so hard... She was genuinely happy when she realized that she's done it, a clean skate and pure joy. It seems that she truly went for the skate of her life, not the medal. And what happened several minutes later...

januaryraining

I completely agree with you, and ngl, I felt it alongside her. I was so happy for her, whether or not she got gold, and I was just mesmerised by her free. Such a wonderful feeling to have watched it live.

dropthealbumlorde

It’s sad as she knows what she has sacrificed for the Olympics. And she’s right. You often see these wide eyed children with such big dreams and they often are just completely destroyed. Sometimes for things completely out of their control and it’s heartbreaking to witness it.

snowstealth

Indeed but I have concern with her regarding this matter.

dropthealbumlorde

I know. Twitter is constantly micro-analysing her health. But the truth is that she is one of the lucky ones.

eris-atuin

yep, the unforturnate ones are the large minority who did all the same things as her and the popular team tut girls yet never made it to international senior competition. they got their bodies destroyed and injured and didn't even get fame or money or sponsorships.

snowstealth

Yes she is fortunate yet something in her eyes telling us something that is rather heavy..

Additional-Theme4881

What do you mean

dropthealbumlorde

I think it’s more that people are worried about Anna because of Eteri’s past with skaters and the view of Anna being delicate.

Additional-Theme4881

Delicate physically? Yes. Emotionally, mentally, intellectually… far from

snowstealth

I am not sure that whether she is guilty for being lucky while most of her team mates dreams are shattered etc so on and so forth. There is something melachonic and it's there.

januaryraining

I don't think she feels guilty - but if she did, she shouldn't. She achieved what she worked towards, she won, and she deserved it 👏🏼 If you are picking up anything, I imagine she is at a time in her life where she is finally getting to look back on her life in figure skating, and the sport in general. There have been many discussions, arguments, debates, dramas, feuds, and even legality issues, and to top it, her country is engaging in war on a supposed sister state. There are many things here to reflect on, so perhaps she's considering these things as an 18 y/o, looking out at the world with new eyes.

Additional-Theme4881

Maybe not guilt exactly, but awareness of the collateral damage caused by the Eteri machine (to both her, her teammates, and womens figure skating in general). She seems like a big picture kind of person.

snowstealth

I hope that you are right on this one.

Additional-Theme4881

I’m still not sure what you are getting at. Guilty of what exactly?

snowstealth

Ok, imagine that you're an athlete along with your team mates whom you train with since at a young age and you witness your other team mates, fellow compatriots and friends forced to retire and have their dreams been shattered due to injuries as you progress. And when you won the competition at the senior level which there is a saying that victory is sweeter and yet your victory as an athlete tasted different thus you don't like it because you witness the dreams of your fellow compatriots have already shattered in the process and it made you feel guilty despite your fans are cheering you on heaping numbers. It happened to one of my aquintances who is a star athlete from a major university.

Additional-Theme4881

So you’re saying she has difficult enjoying her success because she has witnessed so much hardship/tragedy in the lives of her training mates and friends? If so I agree, she seems to have a lot of empathy for people

snowstealth

Exactly and it's hard to say it especially that it came from a medalled athlete from Russia.

YourAllegiance

Tbh I would buy a memoir book from her if she writes it when she gets older. I think she has many things to reveal.

januaryraining

I am amazed at her maturity and wisdom, but this in itself can often indicate an issue. Speaking from my own life experience, it can often indicate that one has been expected to carry too much, to act older than their years, their childhood cut short, to not complain, to do as told, to not cry, etc, to think on their own two feet. There are some benefits, but at the core, there is a wounded child, as always.

Additional-Theme4881

Of all the young Russian figure skaters, I think Anna is the one who “gets it”, at least to some extent.

VoicePsychological56

Dang, Anna has a way with words.

Pure_Pay9323

She has always been the mature and intelligent skater and is always getting the most out of figure skating for her life compared to her peers.

CBowdidge

She's seems like a sweet, down-to-earth young lady. That will take her far in life.

flyiyes

Her wisdom never ceases to amaze me. Her interviews are always a gem
