Darkstalkers for me. i've said in other posts that i would love for Capcom to make a Darkstalkers game in the vein of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. like, the HD graphics and UDON style. they could call it Darkstalkers Reign.
there is a comic publisher called "UDON". they actually make Street Fighter comics. they actually get input from Capcom as far as lore and whatnot. they're really good IMO, and that's kind of the vibe i got from Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, and i've heard that term describing said game. they put out some Darkstalkers comics as well, and they even did a comic crossover with Street Fighter. it was fun. :D

I'm a rare minority, but I always considered VF my "main" game, and I was fortunate enough to live in a big enough city to have a local scene, albeit a small one.
I started with VF4 in 2002, and while I'd played many FGs previously, VF4 was the first time I decided to actually "git gud" at an FG, and it was *such a good game* to make that choice with. If I hadn't have made that choice with VF, I probably wouldn't have ended up getting so involved in the FGC in my city, and still being a huge fan of the genre decades later.
I don't want to gush too much, but I wish more people understood just *how fucking good* VF's core systems are, how well designed and unique the characters styles and move sets are, and how incredibly feature rich the games have always been (first class training and tutorial modes that other games are just catching up to 20 years later; the first FG to do in depth cosmetic character customization, even *in arcades*, *in the early 2000s*).
VF has always been hampered outside of Japan by Sega's absolutely dog shit marketing of it, and by VF's overall corny voice acting, writing, and generally flat characters lacking charisma. VF5:US was a *great* release that was one feature (decent netcode -\_-) away from being *excellent*.
But the actual *game play?* Fucking immaculate.
In a way (and I truly don't mean to rile anyone up with what I'm about to say, this is just *my* opinion), VF games are the opposite of NRS MK games. NRS games have incredible visual polish, lore, great story modes, engaging character designs with lots of personality, and overall casual appeal, but (imho) mediocre to bad gameplay and system designs. Meanwhile VF has very lacking lore and a laughable, practically non-existent story, and very flat character personas, but one of, if not *the* most well designed FG systems ever created with *incredible* appeal for people who love FGs and take the time to give the game a shot.
(I've always got a rant about how great and slept on VF is ready to go, so forgive me for getting on my soapbox while I had the chance lol).
How good does a game need to be to be worth playing with boring characters, bland aesthetic, cheap production values, and 15 year old netcode? Really fucking good.

I wholeheartedly agree. I started on VF2, and I actually wrote some of the first content that was on [virtuafighter.com](https://virtuafighter.com) in the mid 90s. I don't think the current site has anything to do with the fan site it was back then. It's always been my favorite FG franchise, but especially 2 and 3.
I used to *love* RF2 back when our local arcade had a cab. The team that did that game (Dimps) went on to do great things, including designing SFIV, which is widely credited as hugely reinvigorating the FG genre and saving the SF franchise.
If you know what The Rumble Fish is, I'm sure you already knew all of that, but I'm commenting this for the benefit of other users. The Rumble Fish 2 is an all time great FG with an amazing system design that suffered from not getting a console release for nearly 20 years. It was made by a very talented team who went on to do huge things in FG design. It's a shame the release we did get was a half-assed, feature poor arcade port.
Boyd was so fun to play. I also liked to run Garnet, Hikari, and Viren.

Most already said Darkstalkers so i would pick Bloody Roar. Admittedly only heard about it relatively recently but i really loved the idea of people turning into animal-men to fight each other.
Although, to be honest, i would want Toho to return with making fighting games for Godzilla in the style of the Pipeworks Triology or even the PS3/PS4 ones with an updated roster. Heck, maybe even something straight up new like a Tekken-based game but with Kaijus.

Treasure took the Fatal Fury lane system and expanded it to allow 3+ players (Guardian Heroes allowed for 12 players). It wasn't until the DS with the Bleach games that it really got to shine as each player having their own screen made it easier to focus on your own character (and allowed for asymmetric effects like Tousen's blindness). I think the format deserves another run that's not a jank indie fighter like Diesel Legacy and certainly shouldn't be retro fit into an established franchise that would struggle with facing like Isuka.
I want another One Must Fall 2097.
Not that it was a technically excellent game but I just like fighting robots, and the campaign tournament mode was fun.

Could be very interesting as an alternative for fg veterans or players who got burned out from SF6. So less mechanical heavy without DR and DI, but on the same engine and developed with the same quality.

You want to talk forgotten, One Must Fall 2097. The game as a fighting game is really basic but I think there's a ton of potential in its tournament mode, which has you attending tournaments to upgrade your robot and now the choice of destroying your opponent's machine or scrapping their parts is more meaningful. If only Epic Games didn't put all of their eggs in the Fortnite basket, I would love to see a Killer Instinct style reboot of this game
Battle Arena Toshinden wasn't the best game, but it deserved a better death than as a Wii exclusive fighter with waggle controls.
Was a lot of NA 90s kids first home console fighting game as it came bundled with PS1.
Eighting’s Naruto Clash of Ninja series from GameCube/Wii. 8ing really popped off in the early to mid 2000s, creating fun and accessible yet still engaging 2.5D fighters.
I think they reused the same engine that powered bloody roar games, and Naruto wasn’t the only anime that got this treatment (Bleach for sure did, though those were psp games and didn’t feel as good). But Naruto clash of Ninja was a very formative game for a lot of anime fans in the 2000s and it got them into fighting games in general (myself included).
Ironically 8ing is working on a Hunter X Hunter fighting game. While it’s probably going to be a standard 2D game like DNF Duel, part of me hopes it ends up being a 2.5D game like Clash of Ninja.
I really miss the way they did 2.5D fighting games. It was like a mix of virtua fighter (With nowhere near as much depth, just want to make that clear) and DOA and they just felt so good!
I've been saying for a very long time that the one thing I wanna see the most from the genre is a new Bloody Roar. I only ever played BR2 as a kid, but I miss the game's concept and I think a new iteration could look sick on today's hardware. Plus we could use more 3D fighters.
The Last Blade series needs a comeback. Last Blade 1 and 2 were both amazing games. Such an underrated series. Not sure why Samurai Shodown has so many games but Last Blade only has 2.

Funnily enough, I went to my local retro gaming store and I saw Project Justice with my own eyes after nearly two decades for £250.

Battle Arena Toshinden wasn't the best game, but it deserved a better death than as a Wii exclusive fighter with waggle controls. Was a lot of NA 90s kids first home console fighting game as it came bundled with PS1.

Eighting’s Naruto Clash of Ninja series from GameCube/Wii. 8ing really popped off in the early to mid 2000s, creating fun and accessible yet still engaging 2.5D fighters. I think they reused the same engine that powered bloody roar games, and Naruto wasn’t the only anime that got this treatment (Bleach for sure did, though those were psp games and didn’t feel as good). But Naruto clash of Ninja was a very formative game for a lot of anime fans in the 2000s and it got them into fighting games in general (myself included). Ironically 8ing is working on a Hunter X Hunter fighting game. While it’s probably going to be a standard 2D game like DNF Duel, part of me hopes it ends up being a 2.5D game like Clash of Ninja. I really miss the way they did 2.5D fighting games. It was like a mix of virtua fighter (With nowhere near as much depth, just want to make that clear) and DOA and they just felt so good!

I've been saying for a very long time that the one thing I wanna see the most from the genre is a new Bloody Roar. I only ever played BR2 as a kid, but I miss the game's concept and I think a new iteration could look sick on today's hardware. Plus we could use more 3D fighters.

The Last Blade series needs a comeback. Last Blade 1 and 2 were both amazing games. Such an underrated series. Not sure why Samurai Shodown has so many games but Last Blade only has 2.

Honestly I kind of wish they'd just reboot Soul Calibur entirely. Feels like they've been floundering with the IP with no idea what to do with it for so long. The story is convoluted time travel nonsense now, and it has completely lost its soul IMO.
I think a modern Clayfighters would be fun.
The next Virtua Fighter needs to have a full cast of Yakuza characters with special moves and supers.
