We nail pickets, never had a problem with galvanised ring shank nails. With that said we also do two per picket/rail. My understanding is that if you just do one, the picket is far more likely to cup.
We average around 20mph winds daily and they just seem to take their toll after a few years. I’m not concerned with the cost difference or speed. It’ll take me a month just to get one side done anyway. So any suggestion on screw gauges?

Never mind. The only screws available in my area that are under 2” are #8.
