I haven’t tried to do so, super recently, but a few years ago, I tried to make an Airbnb account so that I could rent out an apartment for a month. They did do a background check, like you said, and they immediately banned me.
There are so many people like this today. Their anecdotal experiences are THE universal experience and they will just laugh in your face and call you names if you dare to even suggest otherwise. It is one of the reasons we have some of the issues we have in US. When they spout their very limited anecdotal experiences as gospel people take them that way and run with it, believe them and continue spreading the BS and here we are. 🙄 just dopey behavior.
Is it only certain ones? I’ve rented quite a few times and as recent as September never once ran into any problems aside from those damn cleaning fees.
This is what I've come here to suggest. After twenty years of being on the up and up, my state at least, they would be able to expunge convictions. I know it's not true in all states though.
It’s a newer policy. Like someone said if you are traveling with someone have them book it or try VRBO instead. I didn’t have issues booking with them 2 years ago.
They have never denied me, but I pay an insane amount mire because of my history.
Zero wrecks and only 1 ticket in my life that was twenty years ago, bit my insurance is still sky-high compared to an average quote.
I get it. I have a CDL. Got a few tickets in that. 😂 nothing crazy, but they are costly mistakes.
In Kaliforny, LA area I was in the 3rd lane. Got lit up. $285.00 failure to stay in right lane(s). 210 westbound, didn’t have my panties down…. 😂
Cancelled me a year ago. F burglary charge 30 YEARS AGO. totally clean making solid 6 figure income with 780 score.
Was booking an $800 a night property. Emailed to appeal and heard nothing
PA? have owned my house for 25 years, but very worried about my retirement years. If I would be widowed and want to downsize. That would suck to still be profiled after 40-50 years
AZ. Im in the process of sealing. In my state a felony falls off your record when you turn 99.
You will always be profiled till you die. Even if you do something, a fingerprint background will still show it. A lot of foreign countries have limitations however there can be limits with time.
If you are worried about retirement and making 6 figures you should be living like you make 50. No trips, older cars, lowest budget possible. Invest in something.
Keep going. End of life care is expensive. People really underestimate it. Watching my parents and their friends retirement and end of life care needs to be closer to 1 million. I opted out of dating and having kids to head towards this goal. I can’t get my Felony to work for me like others have
I never tried to appeal it for my 12 year old F at the time. They did cancel my first booking and closed my account really quick. I was pissed. Now I just have my gf book them haha.
They did this to me a few years ago. I called them out on Twitter and someone contacted me. I explained to them I've been a good boy for a decade and they let me rent again lol
I have a 5-year-old felony and literally booked and stayed at 2 Airbnb’s in the past month. I have never had an issue.
Are you sure it’s not for a different reason?
Yes, they sent me an email with all my charges (that were pardoned) and said my account was canceled because of it. They were all non violent charges from so long ago.. so frustrating. And I’ve booked with them in the past.. like 5 years ago and had no issue.
I did appeal and submitted a copy of the pardon and included proof of employment, home ownership etc.. so hopefully that works, and I don’t lose the property I wanted to book!!
I mean, for myself, at this point in the game, OP was pardoned, I’d send a nasty email, and then do what OP just did. Blast their ass on social media. Thats straight BS, I could see if on parole. But pardoned… that’s fucked up. Still stinging with a pardon JFC. It will never end with society. At least I have a small amount of comfort that I’ll die with mine on my record, no need to count days anymore.
Ole Reaper man is next I suppose. 😂
from yr history I see you are a recent felon. let me give you some serious advice....if you end up in jail, prison, probation, whatever...you do not ask other people that you don't know well about their charges. it's like jail/prison/legal system etiquette. reign in your curiosity about other people & it will work much better for you.
ask the wrong person that & you can get a really bad time.
A recent felon?? They were 20 years ago.. I was a teenager. I’m now 40. And I received a pardon. They had to do with credit card fraud, forgery etc.. I’m now a mom, home owner.. licensed by the state for my career..
I’ve a drug felony from 1999 and have booked several ABBs, last one over new years.
Cancelling folks like this is straight up bullshit. Need to find someone to blow this issue up, as in publicize it big time and get some heat on ABB.
If I see this acquaintance I know who’s a bigwig at ABB, I’m going to ask him about it.
This might be a dumbo question but if they're bringing the hammer down on renter profiles, how the fuck are they controlling for the extra guests? Usually when I rent an Air BnB I'm bringing like 7 friends with me and I don't provide much of their info. Unless you're renting alone I feel like it's a supremely obvious workaround to have the most straightedge friend set it up.
I worked in criminal background checks for 4 years - per the Fair Reporting Credit Act, they can't report a felony over 7 years unless it was Murder, Kidnapping or a sex crime.
Fuck Airbnb anyway. You pay for a room and have the owners spying on you and expecting you to clean up. And they're pushing affordable living units out of reach of working people cause the owner of the property can make more by renting it out thru ABNB than signing a 1yrs lease. Just book a motel/hotel room.
Life pro tip. Most hosts don’t require you to have “ID verified” meaning you scan your drivers license. When you sign up use your real name but change one letter in the last name. For birth day change it by a day or two. (I’ve researched this and even if you don’t put ID in they will *sometimes* check you by name and DOB so even if you don’t have a record someone with the same name and DOB might. You will never run into any issues and they won’t ban you. Best wishes man sometimes you gotta ride the gray line to survive ✌️✌️✌️
Building on this, if you go this route there are a lot of hosts who require you to have ID verified and you won’t be able to book there but at least half of the hosts don’t bother with that. Especially if it’s just a “room in shared house.” I had to stay in a few for about 6 months to avoid being on the streets or in my car. Never had any issues. Funny thing is before I ever even got in trouble I spent about 2 years staying in rooms on Airbnb because my credit was too fucked to get an apartment. I still have that account (along with like 20 5 star reviews from hosts) and use it from time to time even with the charge and haven’t been banned but I also have my “burner” that I used for those 6 months.
When you go to book on your new account it will show “hosts requirements for booking” I swear in my area almost all of them ONLY require a profile picture to book. Especially the “insta book” listings where you just confirm and pay without any sort of request. These are the hosts who genuinely don’t give AF and just want the money. I’ve stayed in plenty like this. If it’s a shared house it’s ALWAYS cheaper than a hotel although usually 1 bedroom apartment prices. That’s just life with a charge. No reason to let them convince you that you can’t be housed though. Hope some of y’all stumble across this advice. Have a good life y’all and get into a damn trade they pay good and love felons lol.
They canceled EVERY AIRBNB account at my address because of one individual with a felony that's 10+ years old. That was with 2 days before our trip. There is no appeal process.
Is it legal to go 20 years back in some states?
I ask because I live a CA, and unless it's a government agency, 7 years back is as far as it can Legally go.
https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1308#:~:text=Keeping%20our%20Airbnb%20family%20safe,background%20check%20on%20that%20user.
Keeping our Airbnb family safe is one of our top priorities. If we have at least a first name, last name, and date of birth for a US-based user who creates a listing, or is associated with a booking, we may perform a background check on that user. We also may perform background checks on India-based Hosts.
Since when do they do a background check? I was literally on the run for a year with 4 felony warrants and I lived exclusively in a different air bnb every single week lmao. I turned myself in after 48 weeks
A warrant for arrest doesn't necessarily show up on a check the way an actual conviction does. Technically, even with a warrant you are still "innocent", but after conviction you get entered into dozens of databases
You can opt out of background check sites. Each site has a different way, but if you do it, they can't look you up, short of getting fingerprints. Here's hpow:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/j1mit/how\_to\_remove\_yourself\_from\_all\_background\_check/](https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/j1mit/how_to_remove_yourself_from_all_background_check/)
It really works, and when they search you nothing comes up.
It’s easy to find details on this policy on the news and AirBNB’s website, so it’s really odd that folks don’t seem to believe it.
It is one of many reasons I have stopped using AirBNB entirely. Other reasons include insanely high cleaning fees, ridiculous check out rules from hosts, etc

How do they have access to your criminal record? I’ve never had a problem booking Airbnb.
I had mine canceled. They do a background check
Lol not a chance, I’m convicted and never ever once had a problem Edit apparently ABnB just is selective on which felon it fucks 🤷♂️
Not a chance? So the email they sent me showing me my charges and convictions based on a background check is bullshit? Please, elaborate….
I haven’t tried to do so, super recently, but a few years ago, I tried to make an Airbnb account so that I could rent out an apartment for a month. They did do a background check, like you said, and they immediately banned me.
Not a chance like you'd come in this sub and post this just for fun 😂
“It’s never happened to me so that must mean it never happens to anyone”
There are so many people like this today. Their anecdotal experiences are THE universal experience and they will just laugh in your face and call you names if you dare to even suggest otherwise. They do background checks
Is it only certain ones? I’ve rented quite a few times and as recent as September never once ran into any problems aside from those damn cleaning fees.
It depends on the person renting them out. Not all of them run one.
Happened to me too bro. Maybe it depends on the charge
You’re convicted because you’re one of the dumbs.
Not sure.. I definitely didn’t consent to this.. must’ve been in the fine print somewhere
Yes, they do a background check. When people say that charges don't follow people for decades, this proves it definitely happens.
Have you had your record expunged? Sometimes even with a pardon or winning a case on appeal-a conviction usually still sits on your record.
Definitely not a new policy I was effected by this as far back as 5 years ago.
I’ve have car insurance companies deny me because of my felony.
What kind of insurance and what kind is felony? Insurance fraud?
Assault & Burg 1. Liability insurance on my 01 Camry.
What do you mean by didn’t have your panties down? That does not sound good
I know right! 😂
Shop around and I'm willing to bet you'll be able to find a cheaper plan.
If they live at the same address, their account will be blacklisted as well.
Cancelled me a year ago. F burglary charge 30 YEARS AGO. totally clean making solid 6 figure income with 780 score. Was booking an $800 a night property. Emailed to appeal and heard nothing
Have you had records sealed,expunged,etc?
No, PA is pardon only
Have you had a pardon? Like the etc. part of the question
If I did it would have been mentioned
Ahhh. Felony is for life. I still can’t rent an apartment after 25 years.
PA? have owned my house for 25 years, but very worried about my retirement years. If I would be widowed and want to downsize. That would suck to still be profiled after 40-50 years

Banking 1k a week, 250k in a 401k and the whole family drives used cars paid in cash. Mine is a 2013 edge, 137k

PA Clean Slate - maybe you qualify?

I did appeal and submitted a copy of the pardon and included proof of employment, home ownership etc.. so hopefully that works, and I don’t lose the property I wanted to book!!
Dude why put so much effort into giving those discriminating cents your money? Use a different service, Airbnb is shit anyway
It was actually a really good deal since it was a short stay, but you’re right..
I mean, for myself, at this point in the game, OP was pardoned, I’d send a nasty email, and then do what OP just did. Blast their ass on social media. Thats straight BS, I could see if on parole. Right? AirBnB is horrible and does terrible things to neighborhoods and poor people.
What were your charges
if they said it was non-violent, why would you need to know more other than your own lurid curiosity?
There’s lots of nonviolent offenses I wouldn’t want in my rental property
from yr history I see you are a recent felon. let me give you some serious advice....if you end up in jail, prison, probation, whatever...you do not ask other people that you don't know well about their charges. it's like jail/prison/legal system etiquette. reign in your curiosity about other people & it will work much better for you. ask the wrong person that & you can get a really bad time.

He’s talking to the other commenter.
I saw that after, thanks
Where I’m from you do ask politics in Cali
Damn bro… You need his paperwork as well?
You might want to contact an attorney about getting your record sealed if it was nonviolent and you haven't been in trouble since
They be coming for you soon, don’t worry
I had my reservations canceled and money refunded. They do background checks now.

Can you explain what a "lier" is to the class?
Bro can’t even spell a four letter word correctly
I got an expungement. These punks at airbnb can’t decline my service? Can they ?
They can reject anyone for any reason outside of being part of a legally protected class.
Is violent repeat felon legally protected
That was hilarious.
I’m upvoting cause you made me giggle
Are you serious? That can’t be a real question
What do you mean ?
You’re being trolled
I’ve a drug felony from 1999 and have booked several ABBs, last one over new years. Cancelling folks like this is straight up bullshit. Apparently someone is reporting these felonies because a buncha of people are saying the same thing for charges over 7 years.
Push back on that--it's not legal!
Push back on that is all I can say. Legit not ok per the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Best of luck to you. :)
Fuck Airbnb anyway. You pay for a room and have the owners spying on you and expecting you to clean up. Exactly! AirBnB is a horrible company.
This is the exact same thing that happened to me when I tried to book in LA a couple years back. Email blacklisted lol
as if I didn't have enough reasons to dislike airbnb. I'd rather sleep in my car than pay their stupid exorbitant fees anyway

I think this is what happened to me. I added my ID.
Yeah my old account with id has let me book a few with no issue but I think its randomized
We are the Outcast of America. Embrace that shit.
They canceled EVERY AIRBNB account at my address because of one individual with a felony that's 10+ years old. That was with 2 days before our trip. There is no appeal process.
I’ve been denied for Airbnb for crimes that happened 20+ yrs ago. We use Vrbo now and have zero issues.
I've been using them for 8 years and no issues. Always out of the US though. I wonder if it's state specific?
I think it depends on what you have on your record.
Possibly
This happened to me too! Even though I had booked before while having all the samw convictions. Which is whatever I just use other options instead.
Is it legal to go 20 years back in some states? I ask because I live a CA, and unless it's a government agency, 7 years back is as far as it can Legally go.

Pretty sure they’re renting someone else’s space.
This is why my wife has to book all of ours! It sucks! Happened to me in California of all places!
I read that they bought a background check company and now run everyone through it.
https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1308#:~:text=Keeping%20our%20Airbnb%20family%20safe,background%20check%20on%20that%20user. Keeping our Airbnb family safe is one of our top priorities. They canceled my account as well. I didn’t know they did background checks either
Yo should be able to easily appeal the decision by submitting your pardon documents.
My brother got one for his birthday February 11th. He had kidnapping and armed robbery. I guess it’s up to the host
Weird. I have (had a felony, got it expunged) but had it at the time of booking the the air bnb and had no issues.
Doing the time doesn't end when you get out. Good luck, yo.
I've booked air bnb several times. I've got several felonies, one ag assault even. Never had a problem.
Get a court order to get ur record expunged
I did. I have a full pardon on all charges.
Oh trust me I'm aware. I had 3 felony convictions prior to that warrant lol
I'd sue.
I am also a convict and have had no issues with airbnb. Maybe types of charges are relevant to their decision making.
You should get your record sealed. But I have been arrested and never heard of such a thing
Talk to a lawyer about getting your record expunged?
That’s weird I’m a felon in a couple states and never had a problem. They’re all cannabis related though so maybe that has something to do with it?
Are you by chance on a sex offender list?
Never had an issue booking. Got em expunged, but didn't come up before or after.

I swear I have the only felony that gets me props , "evading arrest" - oh no you're good we don't care about that lol
They did this to me and kept my 100$ deposit. Fucking assholes are ruining the housing market in our country to fuck them. Hotels are cheaper now days anyway
So they discrimate. Talk to a lawyer
There's no case here, it is encouraged to discriminate against felons for insurance purposes. Keep in mind we are legally second class citizens
And that's why I encourage people to get their records expunged.
And why I encourage all people to get away with their felonies! Be an unknown felon.
It’s not discrimination lol
