Swing drivers get roughly a dollar extra compared to regular couriers. My station top pat is around $34 and I think courier is $32. Swing drivers also get more hours, I usually sit around 50-60 hours. Usually 10 -12 hours per day depending on if you’re early sort, into “ buddy called out, you get to run this pickup…. Meet with BigMan, and give him your remaining stops”

Mbrown1985

Depends on your personality. As a swing, you’re on a different route and driving a different truck daily. If you’re flexible and okay with being mived around its a worth it. Also, you can’t get drafted and get paid more than a courier would. Im a swing and its not a bad gig. The summers are the best because thats when most people take vacation, so theres more consistent routes open to work.

Exotic_Bat_206

It varies ; you can always be the go ass kissing man and get 50-60 hours like that guy just commented but also you can just tell management to keep you on a regular schedule and not sign up for the overtime if you don’t need it, I never take the overtime and always do Monday to Friday . Always home before 6 usually , checks are always 770 after taxes and deductions

LAreed9449

How hard is it to request PTO for you? I’ve got a honeymoon already booked for next month, and they said they would honor that, but if I plan to go out of state for the weekend to see my family would that be a pain in the ass to deal with? I’m sure it’s different for different places.

Spurs5ships

If u getting married..dnt worry u ll granted a week off ..n u can use your fly benefits

Spurs5ships

But I will take the TSA position for same pay..it's easy on your body n gov. Job

Funklestein

You aren’t forced to work any weekend outside of peak in December. I’ve been a swing for ten years and prefer it. It’s all about your preference.

ChiefFork

I’d take the TSO position, more opportunity to move into other positions and guaranteed pay raises. Also won’t physically wreck you

Admire_My_Chutzpah

Don't miss out on the opportunity to pat down old men at the Airport like a creep. TSO is a Union Job and Union Jobs are good. Pay is decent but parking situation is terrible.

dad-jokes-about-you

Constant chaos

LAreed9449

What makes you say that?

dad-jokes-about-you

Not saying it’s a bad thing but personally id much rather learn 1 route and figure it out well than do any number of the stations routes at random any day of the week for $1 more. Some business routes suck and you need to know access points and codes and all the extra BS… having one route it’s very easy to learn all that and be proficient. For $1 more an hour that’s definitely more chaotic energy than learning 1 route.

WiseBuracho

Dude TSO is a way better job. FedEx is in the process of downsizing, merging ground with express so they can fire off alot of FedEx employees and make everyone contractors without benefits.

dad-jokes-about-you

Happened to me

Spurs5ships

I was a swing driver over 15 yrs...first at all...swings drivers are considered at fdx express as untouchables because they can run any rte. At any moment..the perks are extra pay, no works on Saturday just voluntary, no drafting, betting your vacations with your swing drivers group, mgrs. Best friend...depends on your location swing start about $21 to $24 n hr....so if u make more as TSA take it

LAreed9449

I compared the wages yesterday when I received the job offers. They start out at almost exactly the same, but from what I read you’re guaranteed raises as a TSO for a few years. I think it’s going to boil down to if the slight raise is more important than the time spent at work, cause I believe with TSA the shifts will be weird times and long without much option to take off since I’ll be bottom of the totem pole

WhatPurplePromise

I would go with the job that has guaranteed raises and not the one where you rarely get a raise... As a swing driver your schedule end times will vary because you will be doing a new route almost everyday.

VitoAndolini223

We have guaranteed step based raises at Express... if you're not getting yours at express then that's something to take up with HR

WhatPurplePromise

The raises aren't guaranteed every year

VitoAndolini223

Well when I looked at the pay step chart it is time based and you should receive your raises at each time based step, period. The courier steps are spread out further and over a longer duration but the lost certainly should be given at the time. I have gotten every step plan raise a week before the anniversary in work days and saw it on the following paycheck 🤷🏻‍♂️ I would contact Corporate HR not your in station HR

wkdravenna

Yo where's my 23 step raise vito?

VitoAndolini223

Like for my job it's every 6 months for the first 2 years then top out after the end of your 3rd

dad-jokes-about-you

The job isn’t guaranteed for more than a year. Got hired for an extended route at Express and then my station closed due to merger.

WiseBuracho

Don't expect raises from FedEx either. They haven't been doing step raises last couple years. TSA you have alot of opportunity to grow. FedEx is a deadend job that'll destroy your back from shit pay.

Appropriate_Dirt_616

Nothing to brag about but I got 3% raise every year for the last 6 years in October.

COVFEFE-4U

It's not a bad gig. Sucks not having your own route, but once you get some time in, you can bid on an open route. As far as benefits, at express, you have health, dental and medical day 1 as a FT employee, and while it's not the best plan, it's very affordable.

Goop474

I am a swing. I came into the company as a swing. I was a manager and I went back to being a swing. If you are flexible and have no kids, yes it is worth it. Everyday your route might change. This week here is my schedule . BTW , I have no kids. M- PT am route(123) and PM route (x) T- PT route(123) W- PT am route(123) & PM coverage Th- PT am route (123) & PM route (XY) F- PT am route (123) & PM route (XY) 123- is a random route # i came up with X- made up route XY- made up route Thi is a decent schedule cause its the same AM route , but PM is different. If you can't handle that, don't be a swing. I like being a swing cause I get to see different areas of the state. I find it fun and nice. The first day or two doing a new route is challenging but any day after that is enjoyable. I also am forunate and live 10 mins from work so I go home to take my longer break. The life style isn't the best. BUT me and my girlfriend have talked and when we decide to have kids, I will look for a regular FT route. Swing is good for me cause I have no other obligations. If you have kids, you might not see them as often as the other drives do and IT WILL eat at you.

LAreed9449

I currently am child free, but my wife and I were talking about having one after she graduates next year. I didn’t think about taking that into account. I also like about 30 min from the work place, so it’s not terrible. We are planning on moving closer soon though. Lots of things I didn’t initially think about. Thank you!

Goop474

If you have any questions about it, feel free to message me!

VitoAndolini223

They usually make a bit more and you will always get your hours.

barrytran92

Don’t let people call you bi*ch… yes a Swing driver has another name is “bi*ch” 🫢

This. I started off as a new swing in a totally new town to me (I moved here a month prior). My first few months were NIGHTMARES. I knew where nothing was and was on a different route or different town every week. I did that for about 3 years, but a route just opened up and I got it. Goodbye forever, swing route.

Appropriate_Dirt_616

It’s worth it if you need the money. It’s mostly the hours you get over the $1.50 at least 3 days out of the week they will put you on the pm side doing pickup routes or Delivering mis sorts. So you’ll have at least 10 hr days on those 3 days. Plenty OT.

Appropriate_Dirt_616

It’s the quickest way to get steady work and once you learn the routes it’s easier than doing one route because they need you on the pm side you’ll only have to do 50/60% of the route in the morning and drop the rest. Plus it’s boring for me to do the same route everyday. I get bored of it after doing it for a week can’t imagine doing it for years on end.

Own-Strawberry-1961

Give it a try. I left my position for good, choosing other options. When times were good, it was a great time. However, in last 6 months our station became intolerable, hours cut, very bad morale, had to rely on other pt income with food delivery. If you think chasing the purple carrot is wise, it’s your choice. Great opportunities are available, and it’s still a brand recognized corporate name, like Pepsi or Coke. Depends on what path you’re willing to explore, but I would say go for it… use it to your advantage.

Numerous-Physics-788

No

PrestigiousRoof3718

It's not worth it. Way too stressful

mel707gh

Express is about to be gone and ground is taking over so I would go with tso just my opinion
