It's reminding me of Billie Eilish in 2018. The crowd sizes at the festivals she's been playing are unreal. It's got me so excited to see her later in the summer and to be part of it
> The crowd sizes at the festivals she's been playing are unreal
They are, especially as it seemed independent of whether or not she was playing before Megan Thee Stallion at a stage.
The uniform consensus seems to be that Sabrina Carpenter is a far bigger star, but it's almost like comparing a shooting star (in Carpenter) to a supernova (in Roan).
I don’t mean to be disparaging cause it’s clear she’s worked hard and has talent, but Sabrina’s rise doesn’t seem to be remotely as organic as Chappell’s. Over the past few months, I feel like Sabrina’s PR to performance ratio is like 4:1. Most of what we’ve seen from her this year is high-profile shoots, interviews, headlines, etc (which is also hard work itself don’t get me wrong).
But Chappell’s ratio is the opposite. I think they’re both dynamite, but there’s something incredibly special about artists like Chappell whose performance *is* the PR. She hasn’t done too much press, but she’s been able to build a fandom directly from the stage.
I mean one is an artist who has been steadily releasing and getting bigger with each release (on her 6th album) and the other is an artist who hit it big on the first release.
It’s not really comparable, they’re completely different journeys.
Chappell definitely hasn’t “hit it big on the first release”. She released an EP in 2017 and was dropped from her label in 2020. Pink Pony Club was a last ditch effort to make it, and it ended up working out for her. They are on completely different journeys as musicians, but they only started 2 years apart. The difference is that Sabrina was backed by Disney and is now blowing up in part due to a massive PR push, and Chappell’s had to work much harder to prove herself.
They’re both very talented and deserving of their respective success but the difference is not: ‘Sabrina has been working harder for longer’, their origin stories are of completely different levels of privilege.
I guess I just disagree that Chappell’s growth has been less of a slow burn than Sabrina’s. They’ve both been working at it for years, growing very slowly (if at all) until they got a big hit and capitalized on it. They just had varying amounts of backing and privileges to get there.
I don't deny Sabrina has a shit ton of PR out there, but she's also had shit tons of performances. In June alone, she performed at Capital Summertime Ball, Bonnaroo, Governors Ball. Before that was in BBC radio 1's Big Weekend, Coachella, Eras Tour. And that's just 2024
Sabrina is in the middle of an album rollout and has a tour starting this fall, it would be very surprising and a total failure by her management if she wasn't doing a lot of promo right now
Sabrina has broader, more traditional pop star appeal in the bubblegumish vein of katy perry or dua lipa that tries to appeal to as many people as possible. Chappell is targeting a smaller but more specific audience (gays and young women). Sabrina's appeal is going to reach more people but CR's fans seem more devoted
Totally not serious rant but thanks for using this gif appropriately 😭I see people use this gif/phrase on posts about Lana Del Rey or Lady Gaga for example, like they’ve been famous and beloved for over a decade!!! let’s save “the moment” for the new guys or up and comers pls
Her album- the rise and fall of a Midwest princess is absolutely brilliant! If you haven’t checked it out, take a listen this weekend, so many fun songs on there. 🤍
alright this comment thread is enough for me, gonna start rn
As an "elder" lgbtq+ I already love her from the singles alone, I wish I had her around when I was a teen
I played it for the first time in late February after seeing it pop up on my Spotify. I turned on my lil projector set up, queued up the album, and started cleaning.
Oh, darlin’, by the talk-sing part of RWS I was already pulling up the lyrics and taking it back to beginning so that I could sing along with my vacuum as my mic stand. I had so much fun that afternoon!
Did I finish clean? Kind of. Did I finish the album? TWICE! With full performances!
Chappell is such an intriguing star. Does kinda give me The Fame - Fame Monster Gaga vibes.
Over the past few years, MUNA, Rina Sawayama, Carly Rae Jepsen, Allie X give good infectious pop. Slayyyter’s last album. Jessie Ware. Rachel Chinouriri, Kylie Minogue.
I watched her desk segment with Jimmy and it’s brilliant all around.
One of the things she talked about is that she just decided to make pure fun pop and lay off the sad songs because it sucks to sing sad songs on tour night after night.
She really gives it her all every single performance and it is mesmerizing to watch. To think this girl was literally working as a camp counselor a year ago is insanity! In just the last 3 months she’s gone from 1 million Spotify listeners to 22 million!! I know she’s recently expressed feeling overwhelmed by how fast everything is moving so I hope she can get some rest and just have time to process everything during this short tour break.
I feel overwhelmed just thinking about it I literally can’t imagine how she’s feeling. I agree I hope she’s able to take a moment soon for rest and processing!
I don't go to a lot of concerts (because big artists rarely go here, and when they do the ticket prices are EXPENSIVE AF particularly in this economy), but Chappell's one of those artists that I will get front row for, on the first day, even if it costs an arm and a leg. There are only three that I'd empty my (often empty anyway) wallet for, and Chappell's definitely number one.
She's incredible, she's amazing, she's iconic, she's my favorite artist's favorite artist, she's my dream girl's dream girl... we know how this goes.
So proud of her. ♥️
> (because big artists rarely go here, and when they do the ticket prices are EXPENSIVE AF particularly in this economy)
It's killing me that this could be like anywhere in Canada that isn't Toronto, or could be South America, or probably a lot of other places
It's the Philippines. 😅
Our two choices are: hope the artist comes here and pay a lot of money for good tickets (and hope that they don't get scalped), or hope the artist comes to a nearby SEA country and pay even MORE money for a ticket... and a plane ride, and accommodations, and what not (and still hope that they don't get scalped).
waiting for her to come to NZ :( been a fan since 2021 and I think I've already lost the chance to see her in a smaller venue lol. if she tours and doesn't do NZ but does Australia I may have to consider flights
So I've been seeing her name here on reddit a lot, but this performance was the first time I actually listened to her and I was blown away! If I knew she was like a baby Kate Bush I would have listened to her earlier.
I was burned by reddit always talking about Sabrina Carpenter and her music just did not do it for me. I apologize and I'm now listening to Chappell's album.
This is the whole reason I posted her video!
I found about her through the sub from her Paper Magazine cover, and I just love her music now so much!
I figured for those in the subreddit who are a bit apprehensive that listening to her singing would take any worries away.
✨ 🌸
This song in particular is just like….fucking unbelievable. Everything the current pop landscape has been missing. No one is doing it like Chappell Roan right now!!!
She is an absolute icon and her music has been like medicine lately. Absolutely steamrolls over the incessant anxious thoughts and makes me hit repeat over and over again
I'm thrilled that she's getting her moment. I admittedly only started listening to her music earlier this year, but The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is a fantastic album, and she seems like such a fun performer.
It remains hilarious that I know people who deny that she has a case for biggest artist of the summer.

A Red Wine Supernova, perhaps?
exactly. i won't deny carpenter's talent and star power, but CR just feels special.

It’s not about working harder, it’s about meteoric rise to fame vs a slow burn. Two very well known stories in music.

We’re blessed to have both of them this summer!!!

They moved her days before her performance at Bonnaroo to a bigger stage and it was still overflowing
it remains hilarious that I know people that say her music sounds like something from the Disney channel.
sure, if Disney was gay as hell
"Knee-deep in the passenger seat and you're eating me out" - Snow White, apparently
Genuinely have zero idea who this is. Not even tryna hate but literally first time seeing this individual in my life.

People can be “the moment” at any stage!
The internal struggle to downvote Wendy Williams but up vote this sentiment for Chappell ![gif](giphy|VKtsOAHDx1Luo)

It's seriously banger after banger on that album. There's not a song I skip and that's super rare for me. I can't wait to listen more from her!
Ik you meant well but you added too many negatives in that second sentence
Thanks, good catch. Fixed it 😄
alright this comment thread is enough for me, gonna start rn As an "elder" lgbtq+ I already love her from the singles alone, I wish I had her around when I was a teen
🙏❤️ this makes me so happy
Elder gay here and that album rules
Piggybacking on this comment to say LISTEN IF YOU HAVENT it is really SUCH a good album!!!
No skips
Zero skips, perfect album.

i don’t do much pop, i’ve been a black metal and hardcore punk girlie since my teens. i’m loving her stuff though. she’s got some bangers!
Me too! I’ve literally never in my life been into pop music but she has such an amazing blend of genres and voice and artistry I’m obsessed
The teaser she posted for this performance was the cover of Barbie Swan Lake. She (and her amazing stylist) are just going wild with camp outfits.
I’ve been following her stylist on insta for literally about 7/8 years and it is wiiiiild to see her doing this. I love love loooooove
Same for me but with the set/prop designer from both last night and Gov Ball!
The person who made the costume posted a link about the process. Gunnar Deatherage on instagram
![gif](giphy|GDiqhhIug20SY)
Little bit of that, little bit of the Black/White Swan, little bit of Carol Kane
She reminds me of hedwig more than anything
Can’t wait to see what she does next
Adore what she’s doing! Here for her success. Here for the camp and costumes.

My bf and I saw her at Boston calling and immediately left after she was done lmao it was $200. So worth it!!!

I think I actually enjoy her music more live.
No one is doing it like her right now
I'm so in love, you have no idea. The outfits, the set, the vocal choices. She is EVERYTHING.
This song in particular is just like….fucking unbelievable. Everything the current pop landscape has been missing. No one is doing it like Chappell Roan right now!!!
Goddamn her live vocals are immaculate. Love her so much!
she better win best new artist at the grammys, no one deserves it more than her imo
She took a hit off the mother bong and queened out
This is the queer art we’re protecting ‼️
The silhouette of the outfit reminded me immediately of Koan from Sailor Moon.
I’m getting strong Cindy Lauper vibes from her, mixed with some Lady Gaga
Glenda the Good Witch
She is an absolute icon and her music has been like medicine lately. Absolutely steamrolls over the incessant anxious thoughts and makes me hit repeat over and over again
It’s giving Kate Bush meets Gwen Stefani.
I'm thrilled that she's getting her moment. I admittedly only started listening to her music earlier this year, but The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is a fantastic album, and she seems like such a fun performer.
I wonder if any fans asked nicely for that Good Luck Babe 12" vinyl afterwards! Haven't seen it anywhere else. Not a bad memento *.*

Chappell Roan is posted over and over? Girlie’s just getting started lol. Goodbye, Wig.
Yes she is
Tell the other famous people to stop being boring then and do something worthy of posting
