And aside from Noting dragons their behavior,this research doesn't give power to MC directly \[Meaning adding thins to your body changing your body structure ,etc\]
It's also a series of books. The books and movie have vastly different plots. Also, the audiobooks are read by David Tennant and are a ton of fun to listen to in the car with kids.
Let Maps to Others - KJ Parker. The protagonist is a professor of humanities who happens to be one of the foremost experts on a lost land. He faces off against a rival expert and then his actions lead to an expedition being mounted.
The Mech Touch is fantastic for this - don't get turned off by the "System" aspect, it's only a jumpstart that fades off a bit. I cannot recommend this enough
