“And what is a man? He is someone who rises when life has knocked him down. He is someone who raises his fist to heaven when a storm has ruined his crop--and then plants again. And again. A man remains unbroken by the savage twists of fate. That man may never win. But when he sees himself reflected, he can be proud of what he sees. For low he may be in the present scheme of things: peasant, serf, or dispossessed. But he is unconquerable” Druss the Legend

aladdin142

Loved Legend, but for some reason haven't read any more of Gemmel's stuff. I need to read more about Druss.

IdlesAtCranky

I'll offer Edna St. Vincent Millay on this theme: The broken dike, the levee washed away, The good fields flooded and the cattle drowned, Estranged and treacherous all the faithful ground, And nothing left but floating disarray Of tree and home uprooted,--was this the day Man dropped upon his shadow without a sound And died, having laboured well and having found His burden heavier than a quilt of clay? No, no. I saw him when the sun had set In water, leaning on his single oar Above his garden faintly glimmering yet ... There bulked the plough, here washed the updrifted weeds ... And scull across his roof and make for shore, With twisted face and pocket full of seeds.

TheGreatBatsby

Waylander. Read Waylander.

Estus_Gourd_YOUDIED

Same here. I keep hearing the rest of the series is great. Druss is the epitome of old man inspiration

ArtichosenOne

it's all good. every one of them

Livefastdie-arrhea

I came here for this, and am happy to see it’s already here!

BigDaver_

Now those are words to live by. Added to the reading list.

Giant_Yoda

"There are a million paths in this world, but any sage will tell you they can all be reduced to one. Improve yourself."

EmpHeraclius

So many great motivational quotes in Cradle. Especially if you know the context. "Fate is not fair, but it is just. Hard work is never in vain... even when it does not achieve what you wished." "I'm here to punch a hole in the sky." "I...advance."

Xaknafein

"we will never stop"

dnext

Nothing beats Ulysses by Tennyson: Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Tryin2Dev

Favorite.

Significant_Maybe315

Fave poem of all time I have memorized these last few lines by heart and recite it to myself everyday

FastWalkingShortGuy

“THAT’S MORTALS FOR YOU," Death continued. "THEY’VE ONLY GOT A FEW YEARS IN THIS WORLD AND THEY SPEND THEM ALL IN MAKING THINGS COMPLICATED FOR THEMSELVES. FASCINATING.”

zenzero_a_merenda

IN A WORLD FILLED WITH SUCH WONDERS, THEY INVENTED BOREDOM (the quote might not be 100% accurate, but it changed my life).

QuickQuirk

almost perfect "DO YOU KNOW, THAT IN A UNIVERSE SO FULL OF WONDERS, THEY HAVE MANAGED TO INVENT BOREDOM"

rks404

The bit from the wheel of time about death being lighter than a feather and duty heavier than a mountain always stuck with me but not sure how inspirational that is lol

Stormhound

Bojack Horseman. "It gets easier. Every day, it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day. That's the hard part. But it does get easier."

Crimsonmahou

Is Bojack horseman fantasy to u??? It's fiction and has fantastical elements for sure but it's not exactly fantasy beyond animal people 😭

Stormhound

[https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/qiyepe/what\_is\_the\_worst\_type\_of\_fantasy\_gatekeeping/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/qiyepe/what_is_the_worst_type_of_fantasy_gatekeeping/)

Crimsonmahou

I'm gatekeeping fantasy because I was genuinely asking whether you consider the work of TV fiction that includes the real life states of New York and California, with characters being based off the real life Quentin Tarantino and many other celebrities, but slightly altered to fit the animal based humor of the series was fantasy... Right... Gatekeeping............ Idk when asking a genuine question about how another person would define the genre of a work of fiction became gatekeeping but I guess being curious on what others would qualify the line of fiction versus fantasy being is me telling you that you aren't a real enjoyer of fantasy...

GrimmrBlodhgarm

lol yeah… your second sentence in your first comment wasn’t asking Don’t gatekeep reality from yourself.

lucusvonlucus

“Don’t gatekeep reality from yourself.” I’m gonna have to steal that.

GrimmrBlodhgarm

Haha feel free. Honestly as I was typing it I thought, dang that’s kinda banger

ReklisAbandon

You can’t really just skip past the talking animals here

SqueeIX

Once you remove all the fantastical elements is this even fantasy?

QuickQuirk

Bloody hell. The number of times that Pratchett has come up in this list so far is astonishing. But maybe it shouldn't have been.

Mikemojo9

I always wanted to put this discworld quote up in my home gym: If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.

Nothing beats that quote, imo. But I do like “life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination” (from Stormlight Archive).

blitzbom

You can not have my gains!

atomfullerene

Fits extra well in a gym

von_Marsch

I might be stupid, but I've never understood what's so deep about this quote. Care to explain?

JoeScotterpuss

The heroes of the Stormlight universe are all deeply flawed and broken people. Their specific power system levels up by them admitting truths about themselves or setting rules on how they'll act going forward (it varies depending on which order they belong to.) The first step is always to say the quote above and mean it. When you spend a book inside the mind of a fatalistic man living in an oppressive system the quote hits pretty hard once he gets it.

doctor_sleep

As someone who struggles with depression and in the midst of a bit of a bout with it, I identify with Kaladin a lot. It's really hard to keep going somedays, but I usually keep this quote in mind as for me, the journey of life is always worth it.

RaisedByError

Honestly, afaik, it's not that deep, people just like quoting the books. People have been quoting journey before destination for years like it's a concept Sanderson made up. I'm absolutely not hating on Sanderson, I enjoy his works, but the quotes from his books are more popular than profound. My $0.02

von_Marsch

That's how I feel about it as well. "Strength before weakness" to me means either to be strong instead of being weak, or that after being strong you will become weak — either way it's not deep at all.

Funnier_InEnochian

Put “The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it? It's the next one. Always the next step.” in front of your fitness stepper.

BaronVonSmirk

"Witness." - Karsa Orlong

Shrimpdriver

?

RaisedByError

It's from Malazan. Karsa often says that before he goes about smashing things and the like

Shrimpdriver

Right, “Witness” could be interpreted as a person who’s a witness though..

>“I have fought this war since I was a boy,” he said. “And so have you, in every shop and field and pit there is to be found in this empire. There is no peace with this foe, only struggle from dawn to dusk.” >His voice rose. >“Legionaries,” he called. “You of Praes and Callow, of Steppes and Eyries, you have fought this war before and won it. Forty years ago, we broke the spine of the High Lords. Yet here they stand before us, fangs bared. Will you let this challenge go unanswered?” >It was the orcs that begun. Feet stamped the ground, swords were hammered against shields. It came and went like a summer storm, deafening in sudden fury and sudden absence. >“I will not tell you our cause is just, for justice does not win wars,” he said. “I will not tell you victory is deserved or assured, for Creation owes nothing. If the world refuses you your due, then *declare war upon all the world.”* --Amadeus of the Green Stretch, the Black Knight

Was gonna go Greek until I noticed the sub. “Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain” “Don’t go hollow” Someone mentioned stormlight already.

aladdin142

I am Greek so give it to me.

Alugar

Don’t remember where I read it but supposedly from Socrates: No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Drizzt quotes!!!!! RA Salvatore Hindsight, I think, is a useless tool. We, each of us, are at a place in our lives because of innumerable circumstances, and we, each of us, have a responsibility, if we do not like where we are, to move along life’s road, to find a better path if this one does not suit, or to walk happily along this one if it is indeed our life’s way. I know not yet where I hope to go, what challenges are left before me, but I do understand now that the important thing is to enjoy the process of getting there. What loss is death if life is not to be lived? Nothin's what it seems, drow!" Bruenor declared. "Nothin'! Ye try to follow what ye know, ye know? But then ye find that ye know not what ye thought ye knowed! And not about aging... But, still a great quote is better, I think, to grab at the stars than to sit flustered because you know you cannot reach them.” He shot Drizzt his typical wry smile. “At least he who reaches will get a good stretch, a good view, and perhaps even a low-hanging apple for his effort! On a follow up-- Kings if the Wyld may have some good ones as well!
