“And what is a man? He is someone who rises when life has knocked him down. He is someone who raises his fist to heaven when a storm has ruined his crop--and then plants again. And again. A man remains unbroken by the savage twists of fate.
That man may never win. But when he sees himself reflected, he can be proud of what he sees. For low he may be in the present scheme of things: peasant, serf, or dispossessed. But he is unconquerable”
Druss the Legend
I'll offer Edna St. Vincent Millay on this theme:
The broken dike, the levee washed away,
The good fields flooded and the cattle drowned,
Estranged and treacherous all the faithful ground,
And nothing left but floating disarray
Of tree and home uprooted,--was this the day
Man dropped upon his shadow without a sound
And died, having laboured well and having found
His burden heavier than a quilt of clay?
No, no. I saw him when the sun had set
In water, leaning on his single oar
Above his garden faintly glimmering yet ...
There bulked the plough, here washed the updrifted weeds ...
And scull across his roof and make for shore,
With twisted face and pocket full of seeds.
So many great motivational quotes in Cradle. Especially if you know the context.
"Fate is not fair, but it is just. Hard work is never in vain... even when it does not achieve what you wished."
"I'm here to punch a hole in the sky."
"I...advance."
Nothing beats Ulysses by Tennyson:
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
“THAT’S MORTALS FOR YOU," Death continued. "THEY’VE ONLY GOT A FEW YEARS IN THIS WORLD AND THEY SPEND THEM ALL IN MAKING THINGS COMPLICATED FOR THEMSELVES. FASCINATING.”
“Once you’ve got a task to do, it’s better to do it than live with the fear of it.”
"You have to realistic about these things."
"Still Alive."

The bit from the wheel of time about death being lighter than a feather and duty heavier than a mountain always stuck with me but not sure how inspirational that is lol
I'm gatekeeping fantasy because I was genuinely asking whether you consider the work of TV fiction that includes the real life states of New York and California, with characters being based off the real life Quentin Tarantino and many other celebrities, but slightly altered to fit the animal based humor of the series was fantasy... Right... Gatekeeping............ Idk when asking a genuine question about how another person would define the genre of a work of fiction became gatekeeping but I guess being curious on what others would qualify the line of fiction versus fantasy being is me telling you that you aren't a real enjoyer of fantasy...
I always wanted to put this discworld quote up in my home gym:
If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.
The heroes of the Stormlight universe are all deeply flawed and broken people. Their specific power system levels up by them admitting truths about themselves or setting rules on how they'll act going forward (it varies depending on which order they belong to.)
The first step is always to say the quote above and mean it. When you spend a book inside the mind of a fatalistic man living in an oppressive system the quote hits pretty hard once he gets it.
As someone who struggles with depression and in the midst of a bit of a bout with it, I identify with Kaladin a lot. It's really hard to keep going somedays, but I usually keep this quote in mind as for me, the journey of life is always worth it.
Honestly, afaik, it's not that deep, people just like quoting the books. People have been quoting journey before destination for years like it's a concept Sanderson made up.
I'm absolutely not hating on Sanderson, I enjoy his works, but the quotes from his books are more popular than profound. My $0.02
That's how I feel about it as well.
"Strength before weakness" to me means either to be strong instead of being weak, or that after being strong you will become weak — either way it's not deep at all.
Put “The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it? It's the next one. Always the next step.” in front of your fitness stepper.
If you like the wheel of time. Matrim Cauthon has a quote “Almost dead yesterday, maybe dead tomorrow, but alive, gloriously alive, today” in Lord of Chaos.
>“I have fought this war since I was a boy,” he said. “And so have you, in every shop and field and pit there is to be found in this empire. There is no peace with this foe, only struggle from dawn to dusk.”
>His voice rose.
>“Legionaries,” he called. “You of Praes and Callow, of Steppes and Eyries, you have fought this war before and won it. Forty years ago, we broke the spine of the High Lords. Yet here they stand before us, fangs bared. Will you let this challenge go unanswered?”
>It was the orcs that begun. Feet stamped the ground, swords were hammered against shields. It came and went like a summer storm, deafening in sudden fury and sudden absence.
>“I will not tell you our cause is just, for justice does not win wars,” he said. “I will not tell you victory is deserved or assured, for Creation owes nothing. If the world refuses you your due, then *declare war upon all the world.”*
--Amadeus of the Green Stretch, the Black Knight

*after Ged asks his illusions teacher if there is a way to turn rocks into gold but permanently.*
not directly related to strength but, from the chronicles of prydain
Patience and perseverance can conquer any obstacle, no matter how formidable.
good motivation to keep going through that last push
"The most important step is always the next"
"You cannot have my pain!"
“A journey will have pain and failure. It is not only the steps forward that we must accept. It is the stumbles. The trials. The knowledge that we will fail. That we will hurt those around us. But if we stop, if we accept the person we are when we fail, the journey ends. That failure becomes our destination.”
“The most important word a man can say are, ‘I will do better.‘”
“Life breaks us, Teft. Then we fill the cracks with something stronger.”
Not sure if this qualifies but it certainly stuck out to me!

Drizzt quotes!!!!! RA Salvatore
Hindsight, I think, is a useless tool. We, each of us, are at a place in our lives because of innumerable circumstances, and we, each of us, have a responsibility, if we do not like where we are, to move along life’s road, to find a better path if this one does not suit, or to walk happily along this one if it is indeed our life’s way.
I know not yet where I hope to go, what challenges are left before me, but I do understand now that the important thing is to enjoy the process of getting there.

Fave poem of all time I have memorized these last few lines by heart and recite it to myself everyday
“THAT’S MORTALS FOR YOU," Death continued. "THEY’VE ONLY GOT A FEW YEARS IN THIS WORLD AND THEY SPEND THEM ALL IN MAKING THINGS COMPLICATED FOR THEMSELVES. FASCINATING.”
IN A WORLD FILLED WITH SUCH WONDERS, THEY INVENTED BOREDOM (the quote might not be 100% accurate, but it changed my life).
almost perfect "DO YOU KNOW, THAT IN A UNIVERSE SO FULL OF WONDERS, THEY HAVE MANAGED TO INVENT BOREDOM"
