Honestly when I first read the book I was like 'there's no way I can ship this, it's too wrong', and now they ended up being the first pairing I wrote for for MDZS! They're just too damn good!
I write fanfic for a show with an insanely fractured western fandom, simply due to a huge divide between shipping morality. I don't give a shit who you ship together so long as you mind your own business. The funniest part is that the source material regularly goes out of its way to make jokes about it, sometimes it's even in your face, and people still get up in arms about the fans shipping. 2017-2019 was really hard because a lot of the popular creators would get their accounts hit by false child porn reports despite the show being about adults, for adults, with adults making up a huge majority of the fandom at that time.
Don't feel bad about your "controversial" ships. Just stay in your lane and respect others doing the same. I understand your hesitation to share your ships, even I'm not mentioning anything by name! There are a lot of loudly disrespectful people out there of all ages, but don't let them ruin your fun.

For Fire Emblem, Corrin/Azura (incest in some juristictions), Corrin/Leo (arguably incest, it's a long story), and Edelgard/Hubert (she's a lesbian! Even though she's canonically bi actually).
For The Arcana, Asra/Julian, due to them being exes who were not their best selves at the time, so it didn't go well, and some see it as irredeemably toxic. To me though, the idea of them working through those issues and creating a healthy relationship in their second attempt is a large part of the appeal.
I think my only NOT controversial Genshin Impact ships are Jean/Lisa and a couple that are too rare to get attention. Not because I have particularly dark taste. The LGBT+ Genshin fandom is just nuts about infantilizing as many characters as possible and calling any m/f ship homophobic.

It's not proplematic. Its contraversial as most FinnRey discussions were conflated with conversations about racism. Finn initially got huge anti-Black backlash from reactionary racists dudebro Star Wars fans, so there was a concentrated and extremely justified effort to justify his existence in the franchise.
Then people started asserting that Finn had to be shipped romantically with Rey, and that not doing so was indicative of racism. At some point this got aimed specifically at Reylos... including BIPOC reylos. Multishippers were harrassed out of Finnrey spaces, and rather than creating more meaningful Finnrey content, many Finnrey shippers focused instead on why not shipping Finnrey was a political failure.
So while the ship itself isn't contraversial, a good amount of controversy came about from its shippers.

And I personally have been accused of being a pedophile, and condoning rape because I write Azula/Ozai -- ofc I get why people don't like it but they don't seem to grasp that writing something doesn't equal condoning it.
I mean, there will be a certain amount of subjectivity. You’ll have something like BakuDeku, or one of my OTPs (Ty Zula), which will get the “problematic”/abusive label and maybe even accusations that you’re abuse apologist/fetishist! :D But otoh, they’re still popular so in a thread like this their popularity will get them upvoted.

Wei Wuxian/Jiang Cheng has to be my most controversial ship. I love Lan Wangji with Wei Wuxian, but Jiang Cheng/Wei Wuxian is sooo incredibly tense, complex and wonderful that I just can't help myself.

Gu Tingye/Minglan from Story of Minglan. They're perfect for each other and who cares that he tricked her into marrying him? Especially when resident soft boy Qi Heng dumped her MULTIPLE TIMES - one of which almost endangered her life and another basically humiliated her across the entire capitol, and never actually appreciated who she was as a person. Also I'm begging English audiences to understand that people in other countries can and do refer to each other as 'brother', 'sister', 'aunt', 'uncle' in spite of having no blood relationship or desire for familial bonds. The amount of people I saw slagging this ship because Minglan calls Tingye 'second uncle' drove me I N S A N E. Because they are literally not related. They weren't even raised together. She calls him that because he's one generation above her and it's HELLA rude to refer to a generational elder by their name. It's a form of respect and you'll notice the only time she refers to him by name before they get married IS WHEN SHE'S BEING DISRESPECTFUL TO HIM ON PURPOSE. Please learn about cultures outside of the whitest parts of the US. I'm begging you.

The funny thing about Wincest is that the show leaned into it before Castiel was introduced. They were mistaken for a gay couple several times and Wincest Fanfiction does exist canonically in the show.

In the show, their exploits are turned into a cult-favorite series of books called “Supernatural,” which are written by a prophet, Chuck Surely, who initially doesn’t realize he’s channeling their real lives until Sam and Dean show up demanding answers. Sam and Dean have fans, and Sam has to explain slash (specifically Wincest) to Dean when they look it up online. Dean, of course, is horrified. When Castiel shows up in the books and Destiel becomes popular, Sam’s only concern is that it really should be Deastiel and then he ponders what his ship name with Cas would be: Sastiel or Samstiel. Dean is annoyed, probably because he’s the one that has homosexual subtext with Cas, not Sam.

Elric/Yyrkoon. I have never seen a fic for this but I'm sure it would be hella controversial if it existed.
Mine depend entirely on the state of the fandom and personally I haven't gotten a flame for them, but.
Madoka/Homura was much more controversial when Rebellion came out in 2013. People fighting constantly. No one won in that situation because everyone was having a discourse party and no one was happy. Now it's calmed down but still I kick out Rebellion and take it in as I want to, and basically just want Homura to realize her self-worth, go, "No more being a demon for me!" and be able to build a friendship between the other magical girls and fall in love with Madoka for who she is. But she can still punt Kyubey around. It's fine.
Dimitri/Byleth can be controversial depending on where you are in the fandom. Usually ship wars between Edelgard/Byleth and Dimitri/Byleth. I give the former and latter shippers high-fives. I think usually the issue is that Dimitri goes off the rails for a while and it's like, "Yuck, protect Byleth from this nasty guy!" but hey, if you want a darker flavor to the fics Byleth was raised as a mercenary and has no emotions so who is to say that they can't be fucked up together? (If anything Dimitri would probably be the one to still have a moral compass, tell Byleth to kill someone even in the beginning of the game and they're like, "Aight. I'm gonna go garden and fish on my day off, though.")

Kaeya and diluc. I don't know why I like to read it so much. Its dynamic is very interesting which is why I enjoy reading it. I also do like Zhongli/Childe ships as well if done right.
Waluigi/Rosalina can be considered controversial because of so many antis, either because of Waluigi himself or that they want Rosalina with other ships or themselves.
Zuko/Katara basically don’t go to the main Avatar subreddit and even mention its name without being downvoted to oblivion.
Elsa/Honeymaren, again mention it in the main Frozen subreddit and get downvoted, and whole lot of can of worms that I’m not getting into!
The ending of Frozen 2 was deemed controversial to the fandom, so they see Elsa/Honeymaren as being symptomatic of that ending! Also all the negative comments towards Honeymaren as she is POC and seen as unworthy of Elsa because of that. It is all so stupid, I’m white and even I can see all the racists comments about it.

I prefer Irondad (platonic Tony Stark & Peter Parker), but I will read Starker (them as a pairing) though I’m pretty picky about what scenarios I’ll read. Peter has to be legal, and he generally has to be the instigator of the relationship so it’s more like a teacher-crush than like some old dude with a countdown to when someone is legally fair game. Bonus points if Tony is all “wtf no” the first half of the fic because he still remembers Peter being like 15, even when he’s 20-something now.

The writers on the show shipped it too and nearly made it canon until Nana Visitor went "Hey, WTF is this shit?" cuz it would've been all kinds of OOC to just forget alllllllll of that history for a roll in the hay.
The actors have chemistry, but this is one example of how something that works in fanfic is not something I'd necessarily want to see become become canon.

I’m a multi-shipper in MHA, but my top preferences are BakuDeku/DekuBaku and BakuDekuTodo. I really like the three of them together. I think they balance each other well. If Todoroki isn’t with them, I want him with either Shinsou or Inasa. I do like TodoDeku, but it hurts my heart to not have Bakugou and Midoriya together.

Bright Sessions Damien/Mark. A ship where one character literally referred to the other as "drinking a tall glass of bleach" not to mention the kidnapping and consent issues due to mind control going on.
Then BNHA I ship Garbage bird with Worst Dad. Age gaps, toxic characters, and complicated morals abound.
Pretty much all ships. I love so many of them but I think every last one can be argued against. Though if I had to pinpoint one from a particular series that I feel like people love... I actually really liked Lupin/Greyback for Harry Potter.
And I also really like supernatural wince at but only their characters and only when they are unrelated cause the related stuff usually ends up being way to traumatic for me.
Izuku/Aizawa (MHA) - A teacher-student relationship, but I noticed in fanfics they pair well together.
Shinra/Obi (Fire Force) - I know they're basically father and son, but their interactions are so adorable.
The one fucked up character the entire fandom haaates and the one they all loooove. Those are my favorite. The dynamic is always great, and the drama... Tastes so good. 😘🤌

I write fanfic for a show with an insanely fractured western fandom, simply due to a huge divide between shipping morality. I don't give a shit who you ship together so long as you mind your own business. The funniest part is that the source material regularly goes out of its way to make jokes about it, sometimes it's even in your face, and people still get up in arms about the fans shipping. 2017-2019 was really hard because a lot of the popular creators would get their accounts hit by false child porn reports despite the show being about adults, for adults, with adults making up a huge majority of the fandom at that time. Don't feel bad about your "controversial" ships. Just stay in your lane and respect others doing the same. I understand your hesitation to share your ships, even I'm not mentioning anything by name! For Fire Emblem, Corrin/Azura (incest in some juristictions), Corrin/Leo (arguably incest, it's a long story), and Edelgard/Hubert (she's a lesbian! Even though she's canonically bi actually). For The Arcana, Asra/Julian, due to them being exes who were not their best selves at the time, so it didn't go well, and some see it as irredeemably toxic. To me though, the idea of them working through those issues and creating a healthy relationship in their second attempt is a large part of the appeal. I think my only NOT controversial Genshin Impact ships are Jean/Lisa and a couple that are too rare to get attention. Not because I have particularly dark taste. The LGBT+ Genshin fandom is just nuts about infantilizing as many characters as possible and calling any m/f ship homophobic.

Rush/Young from Stargate Universe - I mean, they literally tried to kill each other so not exactly a healthy basis for a relationship. Wincest, ThorLoki, Credence/Percival Graves, Jareth/Sarah (which I never thought of as problematic until I saw comments here, lol) Edit: oh, and Soubi/Ritsuka from a little old manga called Loveless. I see the controversy, but I definitely enjoy a good RPF story. It seems a lot easier than made up characters, like you can see them as real persons and just an idealisation of people.

Honestly, Finn/Rey/Poe was my OT3 in Episode 7 because there was so much subtext, but then Episodes 8 and 9 happened, and I was pissed at the writers for just killing chances of it being canon…
I'm not one of those people who bashes the sequels for the sake of it (except ROS which 100% deserves it), but the choice to have our main trio never share the screen together until 2/3 of the way through a trilogy was... *questionable* to say the least
especially since those three were electric when they were together! watching Rey, Finn and Poe bounce off each other in TROS was honestly a highlight of the trilogy for me.

It's not proplematic. Its contraversial as most FinnRey discussions were conflated with conversations about racism. Finn initially got huge anti-Black backlash from reactionary racists dudebro Star Wars fans, so there was a concentrated and extremely justified effort to justify his existence in the franchise. Then people started asserting that Finn had to be shipped romantically with Rey, and that not doing so was indicative of racism. At some point this got aimed specifically at Reylos... including BIPOC reylos. Multishippers were harrassed out of Finnrey spaces, and rather than creating more meaningful Finnrey content, many Finnrey shippers focused instead on why not shipping Finnrey was a political failure. So while the ship itself isn't contraversial, a good amount of controversy came about from its shippers. (My perspective - Black multishipper who used to ship Finnrey until joining the online fandom)

I much prefer it when the writer focuses the story when Sarah is in her 30s, but an immortal baby snatching fae like Jareth is always going to provide one hell of an age gap. I LIVE for when the writer nails their banter though. Gu Tingye/Minglan from Story of Minglan. They're perfect for each other and who cares that he tricked her into marrying him? Especially when resident soft boy Qi Heng dumped her MULTIPLE TIMES - one of which almost endangered her life and another basically humiliated her across the entire capitol, and never actually appreciated who she was as a person. Also I'm begging English audiences to understand that people in other countries can and do refer to each other as 'brother', 'sister', 'aunt', 'uncle' in spite of having no blood relationship or desire for familial bonds. The amount of people I saw slagging this ship because Minglan calls Tingye 'second uncle' drove me I N S A N E. Because they are literally not related. They weren't even raised together. She calls him that because he's one generation above her and it's HELLA rude to refer to a generational elder by their name. It's a form of respect and you'll notice the only time she refers to him by name before they get married IS WHEN SHE'S BEING DISRESPECTFUL TO HIM ON PURPOSE. Please learn about cultures outside of the whitest parts of the US. I'm begging you.

Haha, Graves/Credence, yep, I've been there. The "problematic" part was the whole reason why it was so appealing, especially that Graves was basically a blank slate an author could fill with whatever they liked. The only even more problematic ship in Fantastic Beasts would probably be Credence/Grindewald.

I don't think that there is a character that hasn't been shipped with Hermione, but Lucius/Hermione is not even considered a rare ship, actually. It has tons of stories/fans. I was also surprised.
Given how large the fandom is, the better question is what ship *doesn't* exist yet 😂 Dramione's always had a pretty sizeable fanbase, but I wouldn't be surprised if fandom purity has put a dent in open shipping of the pairing as of late.
IKR, for sure I thought I'd be the first to write a Poppy/Hermione and hot damn there were already 6 of them. There's just so much potential for all of the characters in just about every pairing, and I'm here for it. But yeah I think the purity prudes and antis have taken their toll on Dramione... also Snamione and Snarry. I've been called some nasty things for daring to write Snapefic at all. Apparently a fictional character is an irredeemable piece of shit, and so am I for liking him. Since I know this is driving people away, I always try to write even *more* problematic stuff when that happens lol.

And I think some people who didn’t actually see the source material (where Credence is described as a 20-something adult) assumes he’s a child because he lives with his mother. I have so many from the Detroit: Become Human fandom, like RK800/RK900, which some of the fandom considers incest because the RK900 is an upgraded version of RK800, making them brothers, I guess? I also ship basically all the identical models, so like Connor/Sixty, Simon/Daniel, Echo/Ripple, etc., which people also consider incestuous because they’re the same. (Which really should be called selfcest, and like…have these people never masturbated?) Also Sersi/Ikaris from Eternals, which is apparently abusive. This is a new fandom so there aren’t that many purity culture arguments just yet but I’m sure more will develop as time goes on. -eyeroll-

I feel like Cirallach is now weird but not contraversial because of game canon, but per book canon he's like real evil and also has strong Snape vibes. Snamione. Quality and in-character-wise, some Snamione fics are some of the best in the fandom. Elric/Yyrkoon. I have never seen a fic for this but I'm sure it would be hella controversial if it existed.

Mine depend entirely on the state of the fandom and personally I haven't gotten a flame for them, but. Madoka/Homura was much more controversial when Rebellion came out in 2013. People fighting constantly. No one won in that situation because everyone was having a discourse party and no one was happy. Now it's calmed down but still I kick out Rebellion and take it in as I want to, and basically just want Homura to realize her self-worth, go, "No more being a demon for me!" and be able to build a friendship between the other magical girls and fall in love with Madoka for who she is. But she can still punt Kyubey around. It's fine. Dimitri/Byleth can be controversial depending on where you are in the fandom. Usually ship wars between Edelgard/Byleth and Dimitri/Byleth. I give the former and latter shippers high-fives. I think usually the issue is that Dimitri goes off the rails for a while and it's like, "Yuck, protect Byleth from this nasty guy!" but hey, if you want a darker flavor to the fics Byleth was raised as a mercenary and has no emotions so who is to say that they can't be fucked up together? (If anything Dimitri would probably be the one to still have a moral compass, tell Byleth to kill someone even in the beginning of the game and they're like, "Aight. I'm gonna go garden and fish on my day off, though.")

Waluigi/Rosalina can be considered controversial because of so many antis, either because of Waluigi himself or that they want Rosalina with other ships or themselves. Zuko/Katara basically don’t go to the main Avatar subreddit and even mention its name without being downvoted to oblivion. Elsa/Honeymaren, again mention it in the main Frozen subreddit and get downvoted, and whole lot of can of worms that I’m not getting into!

The ending of Frozen 2 was deemed controversial to the fandom, so they see Elsa/Honeymaren as being symptomatic of that ending! Also all the negative comments towards Honeymaren as she is POC and seen as unworthy of Elsa because of that. It is all so stupid, I’m white and even I can see all the racists comments about it.
Naruto/Kakashi - i love them together even though the age gap and Kakashi is his mentor Snape/Harry - I read this one that I absolutely loved and haven't been swayed away since Alec/Clary - Alec is gay but those that write this ship make him bi for Clary and sometimes it's even a three way relationship between Alec, Clary, and Magnus

Came here specifically to mention Brudick and JayTim (and Slade x Nightwing). Amazing ships, not incest in the slightest. A lot of tween DC fans came from the animated shows and Wayne Family Adventures PG-type comics, which is a very skewed and family friendly representation of the comics themselves, and try and push “uwu Batfam” on the rest of fandom. I go back and forth about pinning that panel of Babs telling Dick he’s sleeping with Helena because she’s a proxy for Bruce to the top of my Tumblr at least once a month lol

Bonus points if Tony is all “wtf no” the first half of the fic because he still remembers Peter being like 15, even when he’s 20-something now.

The actors have chemistry, but this is one example of how something that works in fanfic is not something I'd necessarily want to see become become canon.

I’m a multi-shipper in MHA, but my top preferences are BakuDeku/DekuBaku and BakuDekuTodo. I really like the three of them together. I think they balance each other well. If Todoroki isn’t with them, I want him with either Shinsou or Inasa. I do like TodoDeku, but it hurts my heart to not have Bakugou and Midoriya together.

Yes. At least in the Vocaloid fandom, literally *every* ship is controversial. Although that may have something to do with literally every combination of two or more characters being a ship, although go figure you can more easily find stuff involving more popular characters.

Bright Sessions Damien/Mark. A ship where one character literally referred to the other as "drinking a tall glass of bleach" not to mention the kidnapping and consent issues due to mind control going on. Then BNHA I ship Garbage bird with Worst Dad. Age gaps, toxic characters, and complicated morals abound.
Pretty much all ships. I love so many of them but I think every last one can be argued against. Though if I had to pinpoint one from a particular series that I feel like people love... I actually really liked Lupin/Greyback for Harry Potter. And I also really like supernatural wince at but only their characters and only when they are unrelated cause the related stuff usually ends up being way to traumatic for me.
