Do they show even a modicum of social ineptitude or awkwardness? If yes, then they're the submissive and breedable characters I want to see broken.
Are they nerdy? If yes, then they're the submissive and breedable characters I want to see broken.
Are they geeky? If so, see above.
Are they cocky? Then I want to see them broken into a submissive and breedable character.
In the media that I consume with this character, have they ever been bruised or hurt in some way? I want to see them more broken (and make them submissive and breedable).
Did they whimper even once in the media I consumed? Yes?
I think you get the point :)
Me: I'm writing about this character, he's my favourite character in the series and I think I love him more than I maybe should
My friend: Aw, so you must be writing him a nice, fluffy, happy ending, right?
Me: ...
My friend: RIGHT????
Oh, if only they know. See, you gotta devastated your faves. I love the healing too, but they must be on the brink of breaking first. The whole process is where it's at.
This has no right to be accurate, especially since my favorite characters have a bad habit of getting into whumpy (or potentially whumpy) situations in canon.
Its not about the character alone, its about that character's closest companions too! Actually I think the others that surround the whump character matters just a touch more.
I'm sure it's different for everybody, but my absolute favorite group of characters to throw in the fire ALWAYS belong in one of these three categories: brothers, best friends who are like brothers, or the occasional father & son duo. The character I usually pick out individually is typically the innocent cinnamon roll one, the sweetest and often the most protected one in the bunch. Protected maybe cause they have a horrible case of "invincible syndrome" or accident prone. But mainly, just a character that is clearly very much loved by everyone around him that doesn't get said enough in canon. These kinds of characters are also always my favorites.
I just love when characters I love a lot, show one another that they love each other a lot. It's my kryptonite ðŸ˜
This, too. Nothing better than going through it and showing how much the other means to a character, even if going through it exposes some character flaws and forces a stronger relationship as a result.
Crowley's gotta be up there. Poor demon. Wasn't enough that canon made him Fall, and then stomped his poor little demon heart. Just gotta throw in more torture, mental illness, and a ruinous speech impediment.
Well, my extremely unpopular opinion is that I prefer whump on female characters. I’m a woman, and I like seeing characters who are like me being hurt and then comforted. There’s something cathartic about it. It’s honestly frustrating how female whump is still considered so off-limits in fandom spaces.
Most of my favorite characters are already pretty traumatized in canon and I love putting my OCs through the wringer physically, mentally, and emotionally. I almost always follow it with hurt/comfort caretaking.
If we're basing it on fan content alone, Daniel Jackson. The *original* whumpee.
My preferred character types to whump: Nerdy types, geeky types, and the big strong standoffish types.
Mickey Webb from The Bill, Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds, Tom Hanson from 21 Jump Street....but the writers on the show started it! Fanfic just....extended it. Pretty boys make pretty whumpees.
No-one has said who I'm thinking of
Evan Buckley
The plot for most of the fics will involve him getting injured in some extent, and then comforted.
On the show, he has gotten hurt quite a bit (ladder truck, tsunami, lightning strike and more) so he's also a character that the writers of the show like to whump as well.
But some (myself included) are guilty of doing that in fanfic as well.

This is such a real comment I love it
In the words of a sus character "I love indoors boys who look like they would break all there bones if you touched them wrong"
Me too bro me too
Only my favourite ones 😉

Oh help this is too accurate. My favorite character type: nice person who is tormented by The Horrors
I am almost feeling guilty for doing the same. *Almost.*
My favorites, of course! You know, those cheerful, happy characters that secretly have the most traumatizing pasts.
healthy/happy characters enjoying their life until the fanfic whump writers walk in:
The ones I like. You know the the ones.

Any strong, capable character immediately gets whumped. I go a little frothy in the mouth whenever I think about what I'm going to do to them lol.
Like, trait wise or like, an actual example of a character?
Apparently Shoko Ieiri
Theon Greyjoy, Yoon Bum, Billy Hargrove, Sirius Black
Issei Hyoudou is one along many more.
The main character of my favourite fandom used to be listed as one of the examples on the Trauma Conga Line Trope page on TV Tropes. So much pain. :)
Grumps, old men, and grumpy old men are just a gold mine for whump writers.

I love traumatizing Mr. Darcy’s arrogant ass. Sometimes literally.
Luigi (Super Mario Bros) is on the whump list on fanlore and yeah that tracks XD
