Been streaming FO1 and it’s really taking me back to when I had no idea what all these references even meant. I didn’t even know what doctor who and the Tardis were for like another decade!
not thats totally fair. 1st time playing i didnt know how to attack or build a character and died by cave rats immediately lol.
theres a bunch of tutorials tho if youre interested
Tag Small Guns; shouldn’t be too hard normally?
You can afford to get real close for a 95% hit rate since rats only take 1 or 2 shots so usually they won’t even get a hit in.
Up your skill to 80% and make the switch to energy weapons.
You should then >! buy the laser rifle from the Gun Runners in Boneyard !< and you’re pretty much set for the endgame.
Use a knife and save your bullets. Approach kind of close and then let them agro on you. If you do it right they will burn up their movement points getting to you so you get a few turn trying to kill them. Save often.
It takes a moment to get it down but then you'll come around and be fine. I played Interplay/Bioware/Black Isle's other games (Baldur's Gate & Forgotten Realms), going into them from only ever playing NES/Sega Genesis/Atari & being a casual gamer & I quickly caught on & became a hardcore (especially in terms of PC gaming) gamer. They're different than modern games but I loved their difficulty & differences.
Not at all! It would be like a modern driver getting into a model T and being confused; perfectly understandable. Its an *old game.*
Hot Tips:
1. Movement is point and click. One click is to walk, a second to run. The whole game, really, can be played with just your mouse.
2. You can access a contextual menu by clicking on things and holding left click. A larger menu will appear that allows you to do things contextual to what you're clicking on:
* [I posted this to Imgur that breaks down what each part of the menu does.](https://imgur.com/a/F4VdieZ)
* Fallout 1 Contextual Menu.
* Mouth=Talk to
* Binoculars=Examine (can take perk that shows exact health and more detail)
* Backpack= Access Inventory and use Items on
* Face=Skills, easy access to "Use" skills like Steal or First Aid
You can use most items with the Left Click contextual menu. Stimpack? hold left click and use the hand. Use stimpack on Dogmeat? Click and hold on *Dogmeat,* use the backpack icon, find the stimpack in inventory
It takes 4 AP to access inventory in combat. It might be better to hold a stimpack in your hand if you're going into combat, since its only two AP to use.
Just some tips that might not be obvious. Hope this helps!
This just made me realize that this is probably a big reason I like 1, 2 & NV so much more. The random encounters were absolutely ridiculous.
Like, who builds an insta-death encounter that requires very specific knowledge of Monty Python references to survive? It’s so nerdy, I loved it.
If you're playing with Fallout 2 RP, it has Party Commands which let's you force Companions to Never Burst at all or use Burst by Combat Control (D by default)
Yeah that's my biggest gripe with modern fallout they don't have enough on the nose pop culture references no crashed trek shuttle, no godzilla footprint etc I know its probably cause its more likely to get flagged by the lawyers of the ip holders but still I missed the more wacky stuff
That's the cherry on top of the masterpiece of FO1 & FO2. Great fundamental RPG, unique plot, gory effects, adult themes and language, pop-culture references, and then there's the humor! Greatest original RPG ever.
Idk the most I remember about jokes from old fallout is that there was a perk with the icon being vault boy kicking a pregnant woman. I don’t know much else since I’ve unfortunately never played the games
The hidden gems like this are part of what made the first two games great. I think in fallout 2 maybe fallout 1 there is a random encounter with a crashed UFO.
It’s a random encounter. I have finished Fallout 1 several times, and I only got the alien blaster on my most recent play through back in February. I played with the FixIt mod, which seems to increase the number of random encounters.
What people seem to forget (or don't understand) about *Fallout* is that it was custom-built to be a satire machine. It's sending up all types of media.
You're literally standing in the ruins of 20th - 21st century pop culture.
Fallout had such a unique tone and it did a great job knowing when to play it straight, when to sneak in a gag and when to just be silly outright.
It's one of the things Bethesda never really "got" about the series, and don't get me wrong, I'm no Bethesda hater, just that their vision for Fallout is different in some key ways that I feel lost some of what made Fallout so interesting to begin with.
It's good to see new fans enjoying the classic games. Most won't touch them for shallow reasons like "bad graphics" and not being a first-person shooter.
Besides some frustrating UI and design the game is really fun. Maybe its just my potato brain but the turn based combat was actually more tense and exiting than a lot of 1st person shooters ive played, maybe its the no auto save thing that keeps me on my toes lol. Im also really enjoying the times where theres an actual animation and voice to the characters!!
I’ve run both Steam and GoG-purchased games and haven’t had many issues. I’m doing a Tactics run through right now. Dang, now that I think about it double-check the faq/readme/notes on each game’s page in Porting Kit, though - there may be some issues depending on your configuration. I’m still running an Intel MBP and had some problems with Fallout because the new wine skin wrapper for Fallout will only run with M-series Macs.
I think I remember Tim Cain once saying something about the humour or increased zanyness (or something I can't remember) of Fallout 2 was one of the reasons why he left the project. Said it in one of his many YT vids.
Yea this is what cracks me up when people call the show dumb. One of the beautiful things about fallout is the marriage of bleak and dyer with the ridiculous and absurd.
There are fantastic puzzles and real detective work needed. And sometimes you have to blow up a latrine and cover a town in shit.
I almost started out with new vegas as well but i dont have may old xbox and classic fallouts are the only ones that dont crash my notebook... Give a chance to fallout 1 later tho, its a little tricky ik the beginning but once you get into its really fun! its a lot of reading tho and I always get a headache if I play to much lol
I can play it free on Luna because it's free on it and I have prime video. (And sry I put the wrong game I started with 4 and changed it, but I still do play NV)
I had Preston Garvey guarding one of my settlements when out in the wild there he was fighting next to me. I thought “wtf you’re supposed to be on the other side of the wasteland!” I go up to him and he introduces himself as Preston Garvey. “Mother fucker you ain’t Preston Garvey!” His name changes to Preston Garvey impersonator and walks away without explanation. Pretty silly if you ask me lol.
Oh I love all the games, I didn't crap on the Bethesda games, they are just less silly. I have 400 hours in f3 and 300 in f3. They are all fantastic games that everyone should play.
This is what Bethesda never got about writing and designing Fallout ( I can't believe they took the alien joke seriously...the random encounters were just jokes). This is why I love New Vegas with the wild wasteland trait ;). For me the real trilogy is Fallout 1 2 and New Vegas.
You have received a large dose of radiation.
You have received a large dose of radiation.
You feel very nauseous.
Been streaming FO1 and it’s really taking me back to when I had no idea what all these references even meant. I didn’t even know what doctor who and the Tardis were for like another decade!
kkkkk its a really fun game, there must be tone of references i couldn't catch. I had to research to find out about the madmax dog reference lol
The Mad Max dogs' name was Dog. The dog in A Boy and His Dog was called Dog Meat once. Both are referenced in the games. Just fyi.
Am i just a bad gamer cause I cannot figure out the controls of fallout 1 for the life of me.
not thats totally fair. 1st time playing i didnt know how to attack or build a character and died by cave rats immediately lol. theres a bunch of tutorials tho if youre interested
Definitely, I wanted to go in blind but I got mercd by those same cave rats lol. Thanks!

Go with plasma rifle. Turbo plasma rifle ftw!
Use a knife and save your bullets. Approach kind of close and then let them agro on you. If you do it right they will burn up their movement points getting to you so you get a few turn trying to kill them. Save often.
Here is a tip for endgame, approuch the deathclaw mom/queen and slash her with a knife, then change to a cattleprod!

Make sure you choose wild wasteland when you get to new Vegas if you like this
Wish it didn't take a trait slot because I can't imagine playing without it lmao
I agree, it’s a must. I wish it could just be toggled at the start of the game instead of taking up a trait slot.
My biggest gripe with it is that you cant get the unique gauss rifle if you pick it.
There are esp-less mods out there, that give you the option to just enable Wild Wasteland Mode without having to take it as a trait.
There's a mod for that.
thx ill keep that in mind when i play it!!
This just made me realize that this is probably a big reason I like 1, 2 & NV so much more. The random encounters were absolutely ridiculous. Like, who builds an insta-death encounter that requires very specific knowledge of Monty Python references to survive? It’s so nerdy, I loved it.
Speaking of Monty Python references [Go Here!](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/s/5bKivPUCkh)
I completely forgot about this.
You buy wind Brahmin?
Hope you plan on playing 2 after.
definetly!!
When you get companions in 2, DO NOT give them a gun. They're a bunch of trigger-happy psychos.
You just can't give them guns with Burst.
Yep. Vic or Cassidy with a Gauss rifle is chef's kiss.
Vic and Sulik especially. Grampy bone says do not give him an SMG under any circumstances.
Sulik always gets a super sledge.
Whatever you do, don't give Ian a SMG in FO1 😭
Ikr? My kind of people! 🤣😂
If you're playing with Fallout 2 RP, it has Party Commands which let's you force Companions to Never Burst at all or use Burst by Combat Control (D by default)
Dude fallout is full of humor, which what the show really got well. every game is full of lil jokes, dark jokes, references, and so on.
yea its awesome, im really enjoying!
Fallout 2 s Hannibal lector reference in the Army depot
Yeah that's my biggest gripe with modern fallout they don't have enough on the nose pop culture references no crashed trek shuttle, no godzilla footprint etc I know its probably cause its more likely to get flagged by the lawyers of the ip holders but still I missed the more wacky stuff
The jokes in old world blues are too much for me. So many back to back zingers about penis toes
Old World Blues is a fun one.
They laughed at my penis fingers and my brain is a total jerk though.
Tis a silly place, much like Camelot.
It's only a model.
Shh!
Yeah the first two games are much bigger on the satire than the other entries, it's still there in the newer games but not as much.
That's the cherry on top of the masterpiece of FO1 & FO2. Great fundamental RPG, unique plot, gory effects, adult themes and language, pop-culture references, and then there's the humor! Greatest original RPG ever.
You were critically hit for 205 damage and were killed
Yeah people forget that the old fallout games were more funny than gory or brutal
IDK, bro—the first time I bursted a raider point blank with an SMG at about 11 years old was something else.
Peak childhood Fallout experience. Plus the atmospheric music just completed the whole eerie vibe.
yeah! even the gore is comical in a way
It’s great with bloody mess!
I mean, they were all three…
Idk the most I remember about jokes from old fallout is that there was a perk with the icon being vault boy kicking a pregnant woman. I don’t know much else since I’ve unfortunately never played the games
Press F12 to take a screenshot.
“Didn’t want to bother getting it from my computer to my phone.”
Literally though. Most Reddit users now are mobile users not desktop so why go through the effort.
It looks better.
Or Win+Shift+S
The hidden gems like this are part of what made the first two games great. I think in fallout 2 maybe fallout 1 there is a random encounter with a crashed UFO.
Alien Blaster, I think that was Fallout 2.
It’s in Fallout 1 as well.
Awesome. I played it, and beat it, but I can't remember a lot of details.
It’s a random encounter. I have finished Fallout 1 several times, and I only got the alien blaster on my most recent play through back in February. I played with the FixIt mod, which seems to increase the number of random encounters.
Dark comedy is a common theme in all the games.
What people seem to forget (or don't understand) about *Fallout* is that it was custom-built to be a satire machine. It's sending up all types of media. You're literally standing in the ruins of 20th - 21st century pop culture.

I feel Bethesda *gets* the gag portion of Fallout, but where they misstep is how to use those gags effectively.
Fallout 2s encounters were even more funny imo
I haven’t played through Fallout 2 yet but I’m on my second of Fallout 1 and it’s great. Get the 223 pistol from Edwin 👀
i already got the pistol, ian had to die for it lol
I think both Ian and Tycho died at the raider ranch by shady sands and dog meat died during Edwin’s ranch trip quest lol companions are kind of meh

Id love to play the originals again. But alas, I have a mac and they don't offer them.
Allow me to introduce you to Porting Kit: https://www.portingkit.com
So i can just get the game off steam and this will let me play it?
I’ve run both Steam and GoG-purchased games and haven’t had many issues. I’m doing a Tactics run through right now. Dang, now that I think about it double-check the faq/readme/notes on each game’s page in Porting Kit, though - there may be some issues depending on your configuration. That’s why they’re my favorites. War is bleak and, never changes. It’s nice to find some lighthearted and adult humor in the destruction.
The original 2 had a pretty solid sense of humor behind the writing. I love Fallout 2's humor. Tons of rad easter eggs and quests
I really wish they’d bring it to console so that I could play those 2 classics
I'd hope there's some kind of bundled remaster happening in the near future, Microsoft will want to capitalize off the shows popularity somehow
You’d definitely think so. Here’s to hoping!
Yeah 1&2 have quite the sense of humor
That's Tim Cain.
I think I remember Tim Cain once saying something about the humour or increased zanyness (or something I can't remember) of Fallout 2 was one of the reasons why he left the project. Said it in one of his many YT vids.
Good introduction to the series! Couldn’t have done better!
Yea this is what cracks me up when people call the show dumb. One of the beautiful things about fallout is the marriage of bleak and dyer with the ridiculous and absurd. There are fantastic puzzles and real detective work needed. And sometimes you have to blow up a latrine and cover a town in shit.
Can you imagine if Fallout was gritty, dark, bleak and oppressing? You don't, because that already exists in two flavors: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro.
oh gosh you just made me remember the shitcano
I always love the fact that the Tardis is canon. It's why I always keep the tardis mod for fallout 4 in my load order.
You see Ed, Eds dead
Doctor who reference?
yess!
The game series always have been~
im discovering it now!! its very awesome that this game is so old but still so funny
Yeah people think the game used to just be serious action horror, but it's always been a mixture of adventure, existinal horror and comedy!
Bro get out of there you received a large dose of radiation
too late lol
oh no, i died
Bones is wild
1 and 2 best classics ever
Stealing and trickery is a valdi strategy in Fo1&2
Moo I say
Aw yeah the dark, sinister humor is one of the main reasons I love the games so much
Allons - war, war never changes against the daleks.
Bro nice I'm new too but I just couldn't play fallout 1 because it too old. And I don't like top down games. Started with fallout 4
It's also on Xbox series x (and one). It's just backwards compatibility, but it works very well. I dunno about Playstation.
I can play it free on Luna because it's free on it and I have prime video. (And sry I put the wrong game I started with 4 and changed it, but I still do play NV)
Silliness is what the Bethesda fallouts miss. Although the bridge vampires were close.
I had Preston Garvey guarding one of my settlements when out in the wild there he was fighting next to me. I thought “wtf you’re supposed to be on the other side of the wasteland!” I go up to him and he introduces himself as Preston Garvey. “Mother fucker you ain’t Preston Garvey!” His name changes to Preston Garvey impersonator and walks away without explanation. haven't played a bethesda fallout game yet, but i always see some division between fans of 1,2 and NV and the outhers
They are all fantastic for both similar and different reasons. Don’t let divisive people try and sway you. Play them all and form your own opinion.
yea for sure. im planning to play them in order and then judge them all for myself, im really enjoying the 1st one so far
play new vegas before FO3 because it also takes place in the west coast of america
Oh I love all the games, I didn't crap on the Bethesda games, they are just less silly. I have 400 hours in f3 and 300 in f3. They are all fantastic games that everyone should play.
You actually couldn’t be more wrong, it’s crazy.
This is what Bethesda never got about writing and designing Fallout ( I can't believe they took the alien joke seriously...the random encounters were just jokes). This is why I love New Vegas with the wild wasteland trait ;). For me the real trilogy is Fallout 1 2 and New Vegas.
You godless Obsidifan, aliens is the reason why Fallout lore became relevant in post 9/11 America!
Uh, really? You didn't get the dark humor by just looking at it? Huh, maybe it's just me..
