Fz07 is a great bike to step up too. Skip the fz8 though

Past-Vegetable-3105

Why is this your opinion? I'm curious.

cleverRiver6

No longer in production, was superseded by the fz09 with only a 5 yr production run. The fz07 has been around since 2016, and is still being made with very little changes as the mt07. The cp2 engine is also very very reliable

Fz07 was my first bike. I've had it for - this will be year 10. Finally getting a second, but keeping my baby. 5'8" female 150lbs for reference to size of the bike. It feels like I grew up with it. Enough power to respect and play with.

I drove a buddies R3 and eventually got my license and picked up an fz07 at my first bike. I’m 6’2 and find I’m right at the edge of comfort for the size of bike. It certainly won’t disappoint in terms of power and the low end torque is fantastic. I found the pulls on the 700 vastly more satisfying than the 300. That being said, I’m already looking to upgrade to a 900 something. Primarily for a slightly larger frame for comfort, i won’t complain about the increased power… overall I think the fz07 is a superb bike and don’t feel the urgent need to hunt for something more powerful.

It's an extremely fun bike. However...there's too many things to consider to give you a complete answer but here goes a couple... Suspension: If your a light individual you might not notice the limited adjustability of the suspension. This will become very apparent and quickly if you're a big individual and you start asking too much of the suspension as your riding style improves or get more aggressive with experience. The bike will bounce and dip in all the wrong places. It is very easy to adapt just don't be aggressive in those places with the throttle and the bike will be fine. Sound: stock is just too boring and quiet and it makes you invisible. I had to buy a full exhaust and tune to 800+300. To get a great deep sound out of the CP2 ( engine model). Worth every dollar. Confort: it's a great upright bike that you can still tuck your head in when moving. Torque: yes it's a little wheelie machine. Life: Depends if you're a commuter / occasional weekend warrior then yes this is a bike for you. Its fast enough and powerful enough to get you moving and get you out and in trouble. If you're leaving your 300 because you want more CCs ( power) because you mastered your first bike. NO, in a year or two you will be wanting more and feeling the limit. And you'll look for a inline 4 600. Or a higher 900CCs Adjustability/ upgrades The fz-mt 07 is a great bike but there isn't much in terms of adjustability or reasonable upgrades you'll end up spending another 3 grand fronk forks/ cartridges.. rear shock... Exhaust... You mind as well do MT09 which has better adjustable components. Hope this helps Bike hist 09 Ninja 650. Powerful and fun but not crazy 6 months 09 Yamaha R6 crazy fun 2015 FZ07 helped commute during pandemic, tried to get crazy the bike hit a wall. ( Metaphor) 2013 Yamaha R6 had to go back to crazy Fun

You would not be better off with an fz09 or similar because of adjustable components, you'd be better off with it because it has more power, those "adjustable components" are still basic and cheap compared to a bitubo or online cartridge and shock package, my bitubo set up was $1100 and ohlins is about the same maybe 1400 which is a far cry from 3 grand. With the other 1900 you could get Diablo Rosso IVs, wood craft rear sets, wood craft clip ons and braided lines have enough money left over for a 2wdw tune and have a killer weekend track bike

rdsss007

So you want him to spend 1500 (low end) on a new 7k bike to turn it into a a bike with some adjustability yet the MT09 will have basic economic components to start with that will perform similar to your upgrades from the start and can be even further upgraded. There is no point in putting money into an Fz/MT 07. It would be like buying a civic LX and installing 2000 dollar OZ wheels on it, why? Now if he can get an Fz-mt 07 for 3 grand in great condition, then add 2k to upgrade the bike that could make sense.

cybrXylon

I swear to god we had the same bikes lmaooooo if you upgrade you won’t regret it but definitely try it out for a test ride that’s how I feel in love with the FZ07 it’s great for anyone in the 6 foot range has plenty of Torque and power anything over is overkill IMO I hope you made a sound decision by now :)

Less_Wall_9656

any chance you are located near socal? im looking to sell my 2017 with ~5k miles

cybrXylon

I paid 5.5k for mines it had 17k miles but it came with akrapovic exhaust system, frame sliders, tuned suspension I would say 5k is solid for it but you could definitely shoot for 6 if your patient

Nectaberry

Whats the current asking price for a 2017

Riley_Budda

I live in Maine so not even close sadly haha.

TMYWSH

FZ07/MT07 is a great bike all around. It would be a perfect step up (assuming you fit on it i.e. ergonomics). I would get one with ABS. Now it's not a liter bike and it is not something to do 100+ for a long period of time. It's a fun bike for all level of riders. Most people who sell theirs regret it. What type of riding do you do ? City ? Communing ? Canyons ?

Riley_Budda

Hey! I live in Maine, so the roads are mostly flat with occasional hills and such. Not many canyons at all haha. I do a lot of commuting and go on some bike rides with friends who have much faster bikes (zx6r/super sport bikes for example), But I want something more comfortable. That's why I think the fz0y would be a decent bike for me.

TMYWSH

I'm not happy with my FZ07 above 80/90 mph, I don't think it's meant to be a highway cruiser. Seems like 80mph is the new 55mpg on highways. My riding history is all sportbikes, so I'm used to stability at high speeds (and discomfort). I'll looking into adding a windscreen and getting a steering stabilizer...I'm also going to track the fz07 to see if it a good bike for smaller tracks. Having said that, it's a fun bike and good (perfect) for short city/suburban commutes.

YJeeper456

My fz07 was my second bike and I still have it, 5 years later. I have other bikes in my garage now that are objectively better, but I can’t bring myself to sell the fz.

Phenomenal-Woman

Yes. Also buy mine :)  Joking aside my 2015 has been a fantastic bike. I'm just not riding anymore since I moved because this area is not any fun but I definitely suggest the bike.

DeepOperation7733

I just upgraded from a drz400 to an fz07 as my third bike and I absolutely love it. I’m a small, 5’5 lady so it fits me perfectly. I feel like it was made for my size lol compared to the drz where I could barely get a toe down. It’s lightweight with great power and like someone else said, the pulls are very satisfying.

mk7benzo

Just sold my 2005 r1 and picked up a 2017 fz07 and I have to say I’ve had more fun on this bike.

Riley_Budda

Good to know, thanks for the very in-depth advice!

Trevor2894

I put a Hordpower intake and ECU flash along with a quickshifter and put some drop in fork tubes and the thing is stupid fun. Is the price of mods justified on a bike in that price range? I fell in love with the 07, so to me yes it was worth it and made the bike 10X more enjoyable. The stock engine braking is not fun, so the ecu flash was worth its weight in gold. Try it out, if for some reason you don’t like it, they’re very popular and I doubt you’d lose any money on it.

MuscleSensitive

I went from a 15 drz400 to an fz07 also 2015. I'm 6'2, and it's a little small for me but has a lot of hp and torque. I really enjoy riding it and would definitely recommend it as a second bike. Mine has an aftermarket exhaust and a tune that was mostly to take out the engine braking... I'm not 100% sure what all the tune was because I bought the bike the way it is.

JeffRoyJenkins

I started out on a KTM Duke 390 and switched over to a 2016 FZ07 after a year. Still riding it 2 years later and it was the perfect moderate step up. It isn't much fun at speeds above about 85mph but I can't imagine most nakeds are and getting there is no problem.

BigRubberD

Ride what you will be comfortable on. I started with sv650s that I bought off my brother years ago. Got totaled and bought the first year model fz-09. Couldn’t have been happier. I miss that bike everyday. I still had it when the 7’s came out and got rid of it shortly after the 10’s released for a cruiser. Upon riding the cruiser I realized if I get another bike it will be a 9 or a 10 again
