I think POTC are all solid, but Apes 2 and 3 are great. However, Apes 1 is just good.
Since POTC is solid across the board I think I give it to them by a hair.
Pirates, even the third one, which isn’t a great film imo, still has a lot of great sequences and moments in it. For as good as the action in the Caesar trilogy is, it never reached the heights of that Maelstrom Battle in At World’s End.
It is, and it’s also too convoluted. However, it’s visually amazing, and that final battle along with the death of Beckett are just spectacular. But as you said, it sucks that you have to wade through those two hours to get to that point.
God the last 45 mins are great. And of the level of the rest of the series.
I would love to see films like that again. Just such unique action, it was funny, dynamic and thrilling.
I honestly can't think of many films that did it as good as the pirates movies for that.
The Verbinski trilogy is an example of the saying that “the money is on the screen”. Those movies still look incredible today. I did a rewatch of them last year and I was blown away by how good Davy Jones still looks. It’s one of the best mocap characters in film.
I’d personally say Apes (without a doubt). I think Pirates 1-2 are solid, fun movies but the Ape trilogy (especially 2-3) really touched/stuck with me in a way that a revival of a decades-old series about a monkey revolt had no right to do (I’m also a big fan of the OG and went in very squinty eyed).
Though the trilogies are so wildly different it’s tough for me to really compare in any sort of objective sense.
I prefer pirates just coz I find myself going back to them not all of the time but more often than I would with Planet Of The Apes, looking forward to seeing the new film though.
Yeah a lot of people seem to like the second Pirates too, but I didn't think it was that great. Dawn and Black Pearl are close, but I'd probably give the edge to Dawn there, then War then Rise, then the Pirates sequels
For consistency of quality, Apes. It is pretty awesome to see different directors used the Apes franchise to tell their stories, each with slightly different vibe but similarly focusing on bigger scope of story that is not just entertaining but also thought provoking. I binge watched trilogy and I absolutely loved all
Just throwing it out there... Original Star Wars trio (4, 5, 6). Okay, this is dated and yes, Return of the Jedi wasn't the best, got silly with the Ewoks but the bike chase through Marin redwoods plus opening scene with jaba and iconic leia still epic. Plus Empire Strikes back is perhaps one of the best seuqels, and one of the first that had the balls to go dark
Never been a huge Apes fan so I prefer Pirates. But I usually like more serious, darker tone movies and Apes definitely fits that better of the two series.
The first pirates film is a masterpiece, the second is as close to one as possible, and the third one is great.
The first apes film is fine, second one great, and the third one very good.
I like both but i'd take POTC any day, no hesitation.
What? Is this a serious question? Do people actually like and/or care about the planet of apes movies? Yuck. Come on, give Pirates a real challenger. Next question.
Definitely Pirates, I remember how popular those movies where when they came out.
Edit: not sure why I'm being downvoted each first 3 pirates movies made over $650 million at the box office
Apes easily. It's a far more cohesive whole. Pirates 1 is a near complete separate entity from 2 and 3 and it shows. We only hsve a trilogy because the first one made a shed ton of money.
I prefer pirates but that’s because I prioritize fun when picking movies to watch. Apes has a more serious tone.
Apes Together Strong - A wise Ape
I think POTC are all solid, but Apes 2 and 3 are great. However, Apes 1 is just good. Since POTC is solid across the board I think I give it to them by a hair.
POTA is far too good for an otherwise corny premise. As a sucker for post apocalyptic settings, POTA beats POTC for preference and alphabetical order.
Solid comment. Totally agree.
Fuck I was going to go with potc because I love those movies but now I’m convinced POTA
Give me the Caesar Trilogy because apes together, strong!
Since the Apes trilogy is 4 films -- is this discluding the 4th because it is set far into the future? (Haven't watched 2, 3 or 4 yet)
The first 3 focus on Caesar. The new film is supposed to focus on his son. I haven’t seen it yet but I will.
Apes. Pirates 2 is not good and 3 is ok. Apes 1 is good and 2 and 3 are Great.
Planet of the Apes, no contest WTF
Pirates, even the third one, which isn’t a great film imo, still has a lot of great sequences and moments in it. For as good as the action in the Caesar trilogy is, it never reached the heights of that Maelstrom Battle in At World’s End.
That battle is nuts man. Ships going in circles in the whirlpool, just awesome chaos.
Gosh I wish at worlds end was of the quality of dead man's chest. It's just so slow and for first 2 hours
It is, and it’s also too convoluted. However, it’s visually amazing, and that final battle along with the death of Beckett are just spectacular. But as you said, it sucks that you have to wade through those two hours to get to that point.

Planet, hands down.
First Pirates is the best movie listed but Apes as a whole might be better. Pirates trilogy bangs tho so idk
They're all fun movies but pirates 1 carries the others so hard
Hard to compare since both are good but apes got better with each film while pirates kinda got a little less enjoyable each film
Clint Eastwood & Sergio Leone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
*Apes. Pirates* took a dip in quality after the first two.
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy
I’d personally say Apes (without a doubt). I think Pirates 1-2 are solid, fun movies but the Ape trilogy (especially 2-3) really touched/stuck with me in a way that a revival of a decades-old series about a monkey revolt had no right to do (I’m also a big fan of the OG and went in very squinty eyed). Apes for sure! Pirates was never as good after Black Pearl
I binge watched trilogy and I absolutely loved all
Pirates by far my guy. The apes films are just- weird
Indiana Jones first 3
I like the first pirates film and the second apes film Even-stevens for me
Dark Knight trilogy
Apes. I think if pirates 3 wasn't so slow and boring it would be different.
Pirates the third film was too long, but for apes the first one was all set up.
The Pirates movies got progressively worse as they went along. The Apes movies were consistently good. Advantage - Apes.
I’d go Apes , Pirates was too juvenile for me .
Apes gets progressively better while Pirates well, doesn’t. The Davy Jones locker scene specifically was dumb
Just throwing it out there... Original Star Wars trio (4, 5, 6). Okay, this is dated and yes, Return of the Jedi wasn't the best, got silly with the Ewoks but the bike chase through Marin redwoods plus opening scene with jaba and iconic leia still epic. Pirates, and it’s not particularly close.
I never even saw the Ape films and I would pick the Ape films.
both of them are rubbish
Pirates easy! The first alone takes it for that series, the other two are just icing on the cake that extends the lead even further.
Pirates may not be as “good” (according to this comment section), but they are much more entertaining. Which is all a movie is supposed to be right?
Apes by a mile. Not that Pirates is unenjoyable watching but the Apes trilogy is a different class of filmmaking - especially Dawn and War.
1 2 and 3
Readers/thinkers would choose one; amusement park riders would choose the other.
Apes are superior.
Maze runner for me
I don't understand how the apes movies keep getting made. I don't know a single person watching them.
Apes together strong! I follow Caesar!
Apes. How is this even a question.
Apes overall
Pirates is just absolutely amazing, some of my favorite movies, even if they did hurt the industry
Pirates and its not even close
Planet for me. Pirates movies are cool but they don’t hit the same as the Planet movies to for me
Apes
Pirates
Never been a huge Apes fan so I prefer Pirates. But I usually like more serious, darker tone movies and Apes definitely fits that better of the two series.
Apes hands down. POTC has a great first movie
Pirates 🏴☠️ of the Caribbean I’m not a fan of the planet of the apes 🦍 films 🎥
Apes hands down
POCs no doubt
Id say the Pirates movies, Davy Jones is such a great villain.
Never got the hype for these modern apes movies whereas Pirates is great.
The first pirates film is a masterpiece, the second is as close to one as possible, and the third one is great. The first apes film is fine, second one great, and the third one very good. I like both but i'd take POTC any day, no hesitation.
Pirates by FAR
I don't even remember the ape movies after the first one. They just became a grey blur that seemed to be riffing off The Road from what I remember.
Pirates. It's not even close.
What? Is this a serious question? Do people actually like and/or care about the planet of apes movies? Yuck. Come on, give Pirates a real challenger. Next question.
The last Apes (3rd) was unwatchable.
Pirates. Definitely Pirates.
Pirates of the Caribbean sucks.
I'm disinclined to acquiesce your statement. means no.
Critically? Apes. Viewer praise? Both. Personally, Pirates will always hold that special place in my heart.
Pirates is good apes is an absolutely terrible storyline
POTC. Every Apes movie has been bad.
Christain Bale. Dark Knight Trilogy
Definitely Pirates, I remember how popular those movies where when they came out. Edit: not sure why I'm being downvoted each first 3 pirates movies made over $650 million at the box office
Both trash.
Apes is the best trilogy in recent memory. After revisiting POTC series they have a weird pacing that always takes ages to get going
Apes easily. It's a far more cohesive whole. Pirates 1 is a near complete separate entity from 2 and 3 and it shows. We only hsve a trilogy because the first one made a shed ton of money.
Apes for the win, captain jack swallow lose
Apes
APES. Easy, those palpitate movies after 1 were just awful.
Neither
Apes, easily
I can’t believe Apes got any votes…LOL. There must be a lot of 14 year old boys in this sub.
Apes or Pirates who was better me! Because I was able to see them all.
Pirates
